I cannot overstate how much I love Ichi Tokyo. I go there at least once a week to get their lunch AYCE sushi and everything is extremely wonderful. I typically get Salmon, Eel, and California Temaki and all of those are genuinely the best you can get in town. They dont even judge me for sometimes getting like 3-4 bowls of miso soup. Its great. Even if im not in the mood for sushi all of their appetizers are delicious and their fried rice is one of the best in town as well. The entire staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The very few times I've ever had something come out incorrect all I had to do was politely point it out and they swiftly fixed the problem, or remade it correctly. This place does have really good food - no question there. Everything I've had (across teriyaki, tempura, sushi, rolls, handrolls, other apps, soup) has been great. Couple of odd things, one of them keeping me from being there eating dinner right now because I'd -really- like some sushi and they're right down the street: 1. the place has three websites. I'm not referring to the fact there's a North and a South location, or referring to Yelp or anything - just... three different websites. It's strange. 2. They charge a 33% uplift for all-you-can-eat dinner, at near-zero value-add. I know this because I went in, had the dinner, and found out at bill time it was uplifted over lunch... simply by virtue of being dinner. I understand that "dinner", time-wise, tends to mean different portion sizes in other contexts, different staffing levels, it's where you make your money unless you are a bar, etc. And in this case they broaden the menu slightly, adding sashimi as an option. I'm not a chef but I'm thinking that takes less labor to produce than about anything else. On the flip side of that, I'm sure sashimi, if someone was determined, is the fastest avenue for the restaurant to burn through material cost... if someone came in for three hours eating sashimi 5 pieces at a time and got away with it. That's the risk of running any all-you-can-eat offering - sometimes the bull, sometimes the horns. The food, cleanliness, staff etc is, without question, great. I recently tried Ichi Tokyo for the first time and I am HOOKED. Once I found out that they will make any of their rolls for me with soy paper instead of seaweed, I swore off the place I was going. I've requested this from them and they won't sub soy paper if the roll didn't come with it. This was the worst "sushi" I have ever eaten, if it can even be called that. Basically just some poor quality fish on top of poorly made rice, with no relationship to what real sushi tastes like. Let me start off by saying the food had a very clean taste, not fishy. We stopped on our way through town on Labor Day. They had dinner prices all day so we opted for one roll each. We got the Big Crunch roll. It was good and I'd order it again. We also go the king crab roll. There was A LOT of crunch in it. So much so that the first piece I ate seemed like it was crunch and rice only. No flavor. The rest of the roll had hardly any crab at all. I couldn't taste it in any bite. I didn't expect to find this treasure in Rochester! I am very impressed by the price of sushi considering Minnesota isn't the closest to the ocean. This place has a variety of rolls, but you can also order bentos and all you can eat. I went for a bento box. It comes with soup and the standard variety meal. What's surprising that even the bento sushi was top quality! The wait staff was a bit slow, but to be fair there were lots of people there for dinner the day I went. The tempura on the side was given VERY generously. I honestly like how well priced everything here is and what quality too! I also ordered their mochi ice cream. It was standard, but I didn't like the addition whipped topping and pizzazz that they added on top. Mochi ice cream is fine the way it is, but that's just me nitpicking at this point. Overall, I would come again. I think the only downside is that it's farther away from the Mayo Clinic campus, so you need a car to get there, since it's too far to walk. read more

The wait staff was very pleasant. I was even offered a refill on ginger, once I finished all mine. I don't recall that ever happening before. The lunch buffet is a solid deal for $16.99, especially if you eat a lot. There is a specific list of appetizers, hibachi meals, and sushi, which is available for the lunch buffet specials. There are also non-buffet lunch specials. The sushi & appetizers were all decent. Nothing spectacular, but I got full, and definitely got my money's worth. The smoked salmon was my favorite. For the dinner buffet, I know more sushi options are available. The service was a little on the slow side. I've been to AYCE sushi places before with faster service, even with a large crowd. It took awhile to get waited on, and I was the 1st person in the restaurant for lunch. I also think it's kind of lame that you can only order 3 rolls at once. Especially if one pays, as a customer, for uneaten sushi. I understand why it is done though. People will probably get tired of waiting for refill orders, so they in return will leave. read more

Shoyo ramen is authentic. I have been to Japan 3 times. The taste is exactly the same as I had in Hokkaido. Highly recommend it.

Ordered the sashimi deluxe, 18 piece sashimi meal, $26. It was a nice plating, with 3 of each of tuna (akami), salmon, scallop, sea bass, amberjack and? They were all very fresh and looked nice, it was a good start. Fresh as they were, most lacked in much flavor. The tuna was a little stringy, but the meat on this and most the other cuts did have a melt in ur mouth sensation. I'm a little surprised at the lack of flavor though. I like to eat some raw and by itself then add the wasabi, ginger and or soy on some as well. Felt that I desired something on each piece. All that said, 18 pieces of sashimi for $26 is a pretty good deal, so fewer complaints. The staff was nice but a little slow to the service part. I unusually didn't do saké this time, only water, and my glass emptied before a refill. As well, I sat at the bar and there was no interaction or conversation. I prefer at least acknowledgement, but both the men were pretty stoic. The place was clean, and the variety was excellent. I didn't hate the experience, but felt a few small tweaks could make it excellent. I bet that as well maybe if one stuck with rolls you'd maybe get some good flavors and good deals. read more

Decent prices and sushi for the area! Staff is attentive and the food comes out pretty quickly. Their appetizers are pretty standard fried fare, soup, and salad. The cooked rolls are pretty great; the rolls with raw fish aren't super fresh, especially if you're used to eating sushi on a coast. They can also be a bit heavy-handed with the sauces (might be better to ask for them on the side). Their veggie tempura rolls is one of my favorite! All-you-can-eat lunch special is a great deal for $16.99, thought they don't offer it on weekends. Their happy hour is also great! Like others have said, you won't expect to find such great food in an unassuming strip mall, but Ichi Tokyo will surprise you. If you can't make up your mind, the Bento Box Dinner (or lunch) will let you try a little of everything. They actually do a great job with the batter and frying of the vegetable tempura. The chicken I ordered with my bento box was marinated well and tender. The gyoza dumplings were filled with pork, delicious without being decadent. The bowl of noodles comes with either ramen or soba noodles. I must say it was the least impressive of all the dishes. The broth itself was bland, as were the vegetables in the soup. Perhaps it fell short of our expectations because we were envisioning more of a bowl of ramen with a spicy broth that was rich in flavors, which this wasn't. This is my third time here and I usually order the all you can eat sushi so I can order more sashimi. They changed the rule and let you order a max of 5 sashimi instead of 3 like before, which made me really happy, lol. So first of all, the service: our server was really nice and sweet but she was pretty slow to check on us for new orders. However, our food came on in a reasonable time. In term of food, we started with ordering miso soup and all the sashimi that we can get. we thought that the miso soup was a bit lack of flavor. In term of the sashimi, the salmon is extremely fatty so I would highly recommend it; everything else was just okay tasting. The thing I thought was weird was that they server the roes on slices of cucumber and even if I ate the roe without the cucumber, I can still taste some of that cucumber tasting. We then ordered shrimp tempura, salmon teriyaki, fuki roll, salmon skin roll, beef teriyaki, calamri, chef roll, and the dynamite roll. (We ate a lot, lol) The salmon skin roll and the shrimp tempura were good; the fuki roll were a bit dissapointing, we thought it would have more eggs. The salmon teriyaki was a bit over cooked. The beef teriyaki was controversial, I thought the beef didn't go well with teriyaki sauce but my bf like it so I guess it depended on each individual's taste. The calamari was crunchy and tasty but the serving size was small, only 4 small rings. The chef roll was probably the second best thing we ordered, after the sashimi. The chef roll had salmon and tuna, topped with masago (smelt roe) and it was really fatty. The dynamite roll was a deep fried roll and it really depended on the individual's preference. I have never been a big fan of deep fried sushi so I didn't like it but my bf liked it a lot. read more

We read the reviews and decided to try the $25 each "All you can eat" for supper. Take a look at all the pictures we posted to get a full understanding of our experience. We attempted to do a "Man vs. Food" challenge with the goal of trying everything on the menu (they have a special menu for the "All you can eat", so there are a few rolls and items that you can't choose from). We've never had so much food and failed our challenge, but had a great time trying it. We tried many rolls, but my wife's favorite was either the New Crazy Roll or the Rock'N Roll. I loved them all and had a hard time picking a favorite. I really enjoyed anything with the Tempura in it, the Naruto Roll was new/fun (rolled in cucumber), and I always have to order Futomaki. Also, we tried their Mexican Rolls. My wife thought they were too strange, she either didn't like the Soy Paper or the Jalapeno (she normally likes peppers though), but couldn't make up her mind. I liked them, different and fun to try. I usually get Squid Sashimi, but wasn't able to eat another bite. Ichi Tokyo has a great bar with some Happy Hour Specials. We missed the cut off, but weren't too upset; as most of the drinks are only 50cents cheaper. The best deal we found was their Sake Bombs. 12oz Beer and two shots of warm Sake for $6. The restaurant and bathrooms are well decorated and clean. The employees are professional. This would be a great place for a family, a couple, or large groups. The inside is small, so there may be a wait on a busier night. Our only complaint was that it took 20min from the time we started our appetizers till we received our first rolls. It was only two rolls and the place wasn't very busy, so we thought it took a little bit too long. The wait time in between each additional order takes about 20minutes too. We ordered six at a time, so we were impressed at the speed that the two sushi chefs could make our orders in addition to the other patrons. Great place and we'll be back. Next time, we'll probably come for their Happy Hour Specials. Not just for the drinks, but they have some good rolls at a reduced price. Their "All you can eat" was great, but we normally don't try to eat that much food and we'll just order 1-2 rolls (we want to try their King Crab roll, which isn't on the "All you can eat" menu) and some Sake Bombs to treat ourselves on a future visit.
