Food 4 stars, service 2 stars. I have been to Mango Thai three times and have only been underwhelmed by one dish. All of the food I have had has been absolutely delicious. Fresh ingredients, outstanding flavors, and good portions (some larger than others but nothing huge). Last time I visited I had what's now my favorite dish there: a Chilean sea bass special served on a bed of asparagus and mango. It was SO delicious - the fish was fresh and flaky and the mango juicy and sweet. Asparagus perfectly cooked. I've also had the green curry, red curry, and tasted the pad thai. All were great. For dessert I had the fried banana, and though what I got was unexpected, it was still very tasty. I expected simple fried plantains, but these had some breading or phyllo dough type wrapping. A word of caution: the food can be HOT (spicy). I love hot food and got the hot once (mild, medium, hot are the options) and it was borderline way too hot for me. I ordered the medium after that and that is the perfect level for me. Again, I like hot food, so just a word of caution for those who may not. The service was terrible the last time we were there - you could tell they were short-staffed and there were LOTS of unhappy faces searching for the server. But, I've also had good service there, so it's really hit and miss. read more

Updating my review to mention that I love the restaurant but especially recommend the location in the food court by Mayo (upstairs above the pharmacy). It's a bit tricky to find but it is much cheaper and the portions are much larger. My main qualm is that there are very limited vegetables in the options so you are mostly getting chicken and rice (and sauce) but it is SO flavorful and worth the price. We are from Michigan. but we have loved Mango Thai. My food was great as usual, but my wife had the Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. The waitress was struggling with what we wanted and twice she said certain drinks not available, but came back and said she found it, My wife's Pad Thai had 2 very small shrimp and I felt that was either a mistake or an economic decision. Food is spicy, tasty and hot. The staff barely says a peep, but it's food court food and not a deal breaker and it helps to speed up the line. Red curry is awesome with a side of broth and broccoli- we make our own curry soup bc the curry is really spicy and they can't tone it down per order. Pad Thai was not stellar. Mango Thai used to be my favorite, I used to go to take away at food court once a week at least for Panang/green curry. Not anymore, I can assure you, together with several colleagues of mine who are really displeased and disappointed. What they now serve as Panang curry is a mushy rice with few pieces of chicken, 3 pieces of peppers (if lucky) some basil and a "spit" sauce over the rice. This is not curry (by definition a dish rich in sauce). They used to put rice and sauce next to it, and add more sauce if I asked them. Now they just mix everything up into unappealing dry mess, indeed unacceptable. Will not be eating at Mango Thai food court anymore, and I am not alone. read more

This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants! I frequent the Saint Paul Mango whenever I'm in town (I love in Wisconsin). I happened to be driving through Rochester today and stopped in to try this Mango Thai. This location is larger, has a more modern interior, and much better service. Tori, our sever was hospitable, quick, and attentive. My partner and I only wanted to split a dish and she didn't make us feel cheap for doing so. She provided excellent service. The chili mint chicken was phenomenal! Perfect amount of spice in the sauce (which I want to put on everything ever) and the chicken was a great texture/size. Highly recommend! This ain't your normal looking "Pad See Eiw," and ain't your normal spelled "Pad See Eiw." Think scrambled eggs vs. a scramble. This was a scramble. Noodles, chicken, peppers, scallions (or asparagus), carrots, and more stacked up, not a flat presentation. The soy sauce was solid, as was most of the dish. The one downside was that scallions or asparagus were not cooked fully. Awesome presentation of the Fried Bananas with Ice Cream and Cinnamon in a martini glass. Unfortunately, it was difficult to eat (solo or shared) because the bananas were hard to break/bite item. There was no host at the front of the restaurant, but a busboy sat us at a table. The interiors and decor is dark but not too bad. The food sucks though. I love Thai food and after reading the reviews I decided to give this place a go. First they bring you a hot wet towel to clean your hands. A nice touch except for the fact that my towel stunk like damp or nasty towel ( you know when you leave a fabric or towel damp how it smalls? . Not appetizing at all). My Panang curry : the veggies were alright but chicken smelled like old reheated chicken! Even their white rice was very disappointing. My server was really nice and once I told her about the chicken, asked the kitchen to prepare the curry dish with tofu ( but the tofu didn't taste good either ) So I paid over 22 dollars for some vegetables in a curry sauce and a not so good white rice with a jasmin tea ( which was not good either). I had a nice and easy, snowy Monday afternoon experience here. The service was good, quick and not overbearing or judgemental (despite our backwoods appearances). The red curried beef was A+, the pad Thai was ok but not a stellar seller(dry?);Medium spicy means not spicy. The mango rolls were refreshing, mostly lettuce, but I enjoyed it. Tuesday was not busy and service was good unlike previous reviews. Crab appetizer was 3.5, dip was a 5. Mahi mahi curry was 4.5. Very tasty, but a bit spicy. Green Tea ice cream was a 4. We come in and it seems to be a nicely decorated place. The atmosphere is pleasant and not busy. Only a handful of tables. We order quickly. Then we wait and wait and wait. After 30 minutes I start to ask where is the food. After a few questions to the staff they say we're really short staffed and the food will come soon. Five minutes later I ask for the manager and she says she usually waits 30 minutes at restaurants for food. That at Mango they "cook very fresh". So the answers don't jive. A warm and inviting environment with good food. Mango Thai is the definition of fine dining for a faction of the price. The decoration is very modern and while most of the dishes are something you'd find in every Thai/Malaysian restaurant, Mango Thai puts their own twist on it. I ordered the Masuman Curry. It was delicious. My only gripe about it was that the beef and potatoes were not tender. I found it difficult to cut through these things having not been given a knife. Hopefully the cooks will read this. The Masuman curry was more of a soup than a curry which is interesting, however, it was very flavorful and delicious. I would also like to add that if you're looking for large portion sizes, you won't get that at Mango Thai. More emphasis is placed on quality. Their Thai Iced tea is also delicious. Quality tea with condensed milk. I highly recommend it. I also had their fried banana ice cream for dessert. Not my cup of tea, but I was coerced into it by the lovely staff. It came in a martini glass, which made it difficult to eat. Utility over appearance would be more appreciated for this dish. Lastly the staff was awesome. Very attentive and great conversationalists if you sit at the bar. One of the servers Mandy was extremely helpful for someone who was new to the restaurant and Rochester. I have developed a unique liking for Thai food, but I had a really bad experience at this place. I went there for dinner and ordered crab avocado roll and pad seafood keemow (hot). The roll should be renamed as "some crab but mostly avocado roll" - it had mostly avocado (cold) and no taste to it. Sauce which came along was also okisshh , I was expecting it to be much more flavorful like the traditional Thai sauces. Pad keemow seafood, to my horror was even worse. I have never seen so thick noodles in a pad Thai, which were not amusing. I have asked for making the pad Thai hot at other places too, but it still retains a little bit of its sweetness to it (characteristic of pad thai), but these guys just made it super hot- even difficult to eat. Very good Thai restaurant in the heart of Rochester. Let's face it: you're probably visiting Rochester for the Mayo Clinic. It's very easy to find burgers in this town, or sandwiches, or pork. But sometimes, you want spice. You want vegetables. You want something that won't stick to your backside. Doctors' orders and all that. Mango Thai is a solid solution to this problem. The restaurant has traditional Thai dishes, curries, and noodles, with varying degrees of heat marked in their menu. Their hot isn't over the top so your trusty Thai basil, although marked with three stars, is a safe bet. I found the dish, served with chicken AND shrimp, to be very tasty and exactly what I expected. Having been here 3-4 times a week every week for about a year, I LOVE the food. Marlin and Chai, the owners, are gifted cooks. This is the best place to find authentic Thai food in MN. You may probably ask the owners for out of menu stuff. They are great in steak (better than near by places!!), Korean and Japanese dishes as well. After several disappointments in Rochester's restaurants finally we found our favorite place in the city! And yes it's Mango Thai. We've been here several times despite being only three months since moving to Rochester. We actually consider it one of the best Thai places we've ever been to including best places in SF. So far we tried many items from their menu and were pleased with every single one of them. Their service is generally good, it could get messy at sometimes when it's a busy night but they are always friendly and knowledgeable! The atmosphere is great for a date or big groups..not so much for kids but still our baby loved when we sat outside on a good day and watched people passing by. Mango Thai is not related to Johnny Mango's that I've been critical of before, but rather related to a twin cities restaurant of similar name and menu. My friend Andy and I chose to test it out yesterday for lunch, what follows is an account of our experience... In truth, the construction and parking were the only partial difficulties we endured having lunch at Mango Thai. When you enter the restaurant, the decor is modern and similar to comparable restaurants in Chicago, NYC, or Washington DC. except for the sitting area which is a single (nice) low profile padded bench. This is of course barely relevant since we were able to sit promptly. The restaurant was essentially filled with a single table open throughout the lunch time rush. The wait staff were kind, attentive and moved with purpose. The drinks were good sized, and the dishes seemed to parallel the price in size and complexity. I had Chicken Basil and Andy had Soup. The items were perfectly sized and extremely flavorful. The presentations were beautiful as well. The flavors reminded me of the great Thai restaurant that used to stand where Poblana currently is but with a lot more flair in presentation and decor. The staff were very attentive in checking on us and filling our drinks. They introduced their new features and specials of the day. We hoped they keep the special that we tried as their regular..the meat were seared perfectly and the dipping sauce was spicy but paired well with the meat.
