Dana is AWESOME! I first found her when she worked at XEX Salon. I sat in her chair with a glass of wine while she examined by hair. She told me I didn't need a trim just yet and could probably go another 3-4 weeks. WHAT?!?! Have you ever been to a stylist that says that? I finished my glass of wine and left, rescheduling my appointment for a month later. Dana listens to what you want and provides her expertise. I have very curly hair that I wear mostly straight but like the option to go curly. That's a difficult cut but she has perfected it - long or short. I wanted a "drastic change" so she gave me an edgier look with bangs - it was great. I had my hair cut by Ashley Sullivan. She listened to what I wanted and gave me exactly what I was looking for. She made some helpful suggestions, without the annoying hard sell you get some places. About 15-months ago, I was referred to Dedric @ Mane Space by a friend. I had been increasingly unhappy with the stylist I had been with for a while. I landed at Dedric's and have been there ever since. At my first appointment I explained what was happening with my hair and what treatments (color, chemical, etc.) had been performed on it. Dedric took the time to study my scalp and hair and made recommendations based on the information I shared. Over the next few months, I started to see results and my hair's health improved considerably. He continues to make new recommendations to me as my quest continues to regain my length. It took a little time but I'm very pleased with the progress. I didn't lose my length overnight and it wouldn't be reasonable to expect to recover it overnight. Points in Dedric's favor: 1. He's an excellent stylist/colorist and his clients look amazing when we leave 2. He does all hair types but he *knows* African American hair and all its uniqueness 3. He uses superior hair products 4. He listens to what I observe about my hair and to my goals for my hair 5. His prices are reasonable; since I go weekly this matters 6. When I have time constraints, I share those in advance and he makes sure that I'm out of the chair on time 7. He gets results 8. Mane Space is convenient and is less than half a block away from the Wabash/Washington CTA stop. All good for me and I'm glad I was referred to Dedric. I came to Dana the beginning of this summer for a hair makeover, after having a haircut nightmare this december i refused to cut my hair, or wear it down for six months.. i finally decided I was going to get extensions. Her website impressed me so I booked her for extensions, turned out she does Keratin treatments and everything else as well. I made the switch and instead of going to three different places for cut, color and extensions I'd just do it all at one place. After the Keratin, Cut, color, highlights, and extensions this girl turned my horrible hair into glam hollywood. i absolutely love it, which is why I go to her once a week for a wash and blowdry. Laura is amazing! I have long blonde thick hair and I've always struggled with cuts looking choppy and so I've settled with one or two haircuts a year. dana did a so-so job on my hair. nothing particularly outstanding and no major gaffes. the haircut could be trendier though. it was just flat. she is friendly and tries to do what you want. Alas, she spends a lot of time away from her salon for various reasons (i mean weeks) and that is a big problem for me. i mean a woman usually has 1 hairstylist, and you usually want your stylist to be available when you need her. i am sorry but in my mind, when a stylist spends a lot of time away from her business, it means she is not too passionate about her job and she should expect her customers to go elsewhere. Dana also doesnt open every day of the week, which makes it even harder to get an appointment, especially that she works by herself. i agree with the other reviewer about the place being a bit small. size didnt really bother me personally. the decor is just too dark and a bit depressing though. read more

She's so fun to talk to and is very knowledgeable about products and styling, and in only 2 sessions she's taught me more than I had learned in my entire life about how to blow dry my own hair. Laura is a magnificent!! I walked into Mane Space spontaneously looking to do something different with my hair. As someone who has never colored their hair before, I was looking to get subtle balayage and even brought pictures of the exact color I was looking for. Not only was Laura patient and attentive, but she listened to all my needs and made great suggestions based on what I was looking for! Save your time and your money!!! I had written a negative review here and Dana decided to take it off. She is a joke of a stylist. I scheduled an appointment with Dana for a hair trial for my wedding. Thank God for trials! She said the trial would take 2 hours and she had me out of there in 45 minutes and gave me some Shirley Temple curls, I looked like a poodle. She has no clue how to do hair. The only regret I have is that I paid her for the trial because she deserved no payment for the joke of work she did. Needless to say she was definitely not booked for my wedding. The 5 stars on here must definitely be from her friends and family which is the only explanation that makes sense considering there are many 1 stars on here. A stylist cannot be two different extremes, horrible and wonderful so often. So that's the only explanation I can think of as to why she has positive reviews at all. Dedric deshon is great with natural hair. I've been going to him since 2007 to get my hair done. He gets my coarse African American hair bone straight and doesn't over clip my ends. I will follow him to any salon, but I especially enjoy the beautiful views from mane space. read more

Dana is wonderful! Dana just did hair for my wedding. In 5 hours she did me, my mom, my mother-in-law, and 7 bridesmaids. I told her I was going for more volume, because I have pretty thin hair and she added the extensions and I've never gotten more compliments! They look so natural and they are so so so easy to work with, it's like not even having them because you don't change your routine at all. All you have to do is come back every 4 weeks and pay a very moderate price to get them reset. Dana is one of the best stylists I know -- and I'm nearly 50 and have lived a lot of places, so I know a lot of them. She is highly intelligent, creative, and energetic. You get the sense of somebody who is smart enough to have gone into just about any field she wanted to, but has chosen to devote her formidable intelligence and drive to making people look good. She is very communicative, will ask you what you want, but also give very good input. She does not push products -- usually a big annoyance with stylists -- but rather gives advice on how to find the right ones. Dana did my extensions for my wedding, and I had a fantastic experience. It was my first time ever getting extensions, and after getting a quote from another place for $1200 - and saying hell no - I was thrilled with Dana's pricing. More importantly though, she did an awesome job with them! I've received a TON of compliments on my extensions and the girl who did my hair for my wedding (which was out of town, hence using someone other than Dana) was totally jealous and wants some of her own.
