Alex Croft is a true artist and an absolute miracle worker for hair! I first found her at Mane and she is still listed on their website, but I know you can also book her specifically through the salonlofts website. I first went to Alex because someone else at Mane did my hair and the cut and color were really choppy. I didn't feel comfortable having the same person fix it; I wasn't even sure it could be fixed. Alex patiently talked me through my expectations and was clear on what I didn't like before starting. She also talked me through why things probably went wrong the first time. Then somehow she made everything smooth and beautiful without making it look over-processed or too short, and also managed to keep the dimensionality. The next time, I was stupid enough to once again go somewhere else (closer to my home; seemingly cheaper). They cut corners to make it go faster and as a result the color was just weird, inconsistent, and unflattering. (Oh, and it actually did end up being more expensive in the end too!) I went back to Alex and again, she patiently talked to me about everything, explained what probably went wrong at the other place, and somehow, once again, she made it beautiful! As you can see, I'm probably a picky pain-in-the-ass type of client with expectations that are unreasonably high. That said, Alex always exceeds them. By the third time, I had learned my lesson. I was not going to go to anyone but Alex in the future. When I sought her out the third time, I found her solo at Salon Lofts. For me, the lofts are such a better experience than the salon. There's none of the fakeness or mandated upselling that typically accompany a salon setting, but you still have all the amenities and the "chatting to your best friend" relaxed vibe. The third time I went, I hadn't had my hair colored in over 2 years due to covid, so it was the first time I got to see what she would do with a blank(ish) slate. We had a long discussion about what I liked and wanted, making sure we saw things the same way and were clear on wants and expectations. I left the tone up to her to decide what would flatter my skin tone. I have so much fun hanging out with her whenever she does my hair, and she is also such a thoughtful colorist. She used less strong developer on the places it was going to be sitting longer, middle for the middle, and stronger for the end bit so everything developed at the same rate. That's genius. She used a combination of balyage and foils to be able to accomplish the look I wanted with my hair type. Knowing I can tend to go way too long before getting my hair redone, she purposely blended out the roots and gave me a root melt that would allow the hair to grow out more smoothly. The end result was just so gorgeous! The tone was perfect for my skin, somehow making my eyes look brighter and bluer and my skin look healthier and more glowing. I don't even know how she does it! Seriously, even if I move out of state I think I will come back to get my hair done by her. I went home and my husband couldn't stop gushing about how beautiful it was. He'll usually say, "You look so beautiful!" but this time, he was gushing about the artistry. It was hilariously adorable, but seriously the work was that skillful! He was saying, "Wow it just makes your eyes and your skin pop! Such a beautiful color! I've never seen anything like it. And how did she blend it so smoothly? She is really an artist!" I could hardly get out the door because he wouldn't stop admiring it. Then, the very next week, I got a job offer and negotiated the salary 15% higher than the offer! I'm 99% sure my hair looking so good helped me get the job, and now I can afford to get it updated more often! Yayyyy. Every time I've gone to her, I go for some kind of blonde, it's always a slightly different kind of blonde, but it turns out amazing and flattering every time. I rarely leave reviews but I need to for this. First of all, the cleanliness and steps they are taking for safety are so awesome! Secondly, Christine is AMAZING!! I have been going to the same girl for my hair for 10 years and then moved so was in search of someone new. Went to another place downtown and felt like the girl really didn't listen to me. During my consultation, Christine took so much time with me explaining everything and she actually LISTENED to me. I decided on a pretty drastic change for myself, to cut my hair into a bob. I had the most AMAZING experience at Mane Salon. Previously at a different salon, my hair was over bleached (10 time....was at the salon for 12 hours). When I got here, I was a little nervous to try a new place because of some bad past experiences at so called "Top Salons", but my my stylist Jesse, and colorist Steven put me at ease immediately. We all sat down and consulted about my hair texture, needs, concerns, and goals. There are places I've been to where after we talk I am left a little confused and even scared about what is going to be done with my hair so I would close my eyes and pray for the best outcome, but let me tell you that this is not that place. Jesse is a master of hair cutting and styling, so much so I am not afraid to get hair cuts anymore! I also want to style my hair for any upcoming events here! Moved from Hawaii and needed an amazing colorist and luckily I found one! I got Tracy and she did an amazing job with my hair color. Normally being Asian and having very dark black hair that has been color treated many times- not many want or know how to do a good job with the picture I present. (heads up: it's not inexpensive). I'm giving Chantelle at Mane Salon a glowing 5-star review because she exceeded my expectations in every way imaginable by: 1. Having great communication; 2. Being extremely thorough; 3. Amazing artistry; 4. Honesty; 5. Overall, fun, bubbly personality; and 6. Mane is a very posh salon. TIP: I highly recommend purchasing the protective treatments as well as the take-home treatment, a good sulfate-free shampoo, hair mask such as the Kerastase and Moroccan oil to maintain a silky, smooth sheen to your freshly color-treated hair, which without the correct products, could feel like a broomstick (if you don't, consider yourself warned). 1. GREAT COMMUNICATION. I told Chantelle that my hair has a tendency to turn orange and I wanted ashy blonde highlights to counteract the brassiness. Chantelle actively listened to my concerns and educated me about what she thought she could realistically achieve in one session in order to manage my expectations. Further, she conveyed to me that she thought my skin tone would not complement the greyness of ashy hair, which I truly appreciated. However, she suggested that she could achieve a compromise between the ashy blonde I wanted and a way to keep the tone complementary to my darker complexion. She also told me in advance her color placement strategy before she implemented it. 2. EXTREME THOROUGHNESS. In total, it took Chantelle 6 hours to complete styling my long, thick hair (it was my birthday and she knew I wanted to look extra special for my dinner plans that evening). She worked through my head and brushed each small section with expert deliberate precision so that whether my hair is styled straight or curled, the dimensional highlights and darker strands were integrated as if I had been sun kissed -- the underlying premise of the balayage technique. 3. AMAZING ARTIST. I cannot adequately convey how stunning Chantelle's workmanship is on my hair. I can't stop looking at myself because she did SUCH an amazing job transforming my hair from brassy orange undertones to radiant blonde sunkissed streaks. The pictures speak a thousand words and attest to why it's worth EVERY PENNY to go to someone who has the artistic vision to bring out the absolute best aesthetic version of your hair. She made me feel like a million bucks! 4. HONESTY. Sometimes you feel like you're being sold services that you don't need and this is something that I never appreciate. Did I like my hair? Yes! Was it worth $400? Nope! I went in to get a touch up on my Balayage. How i paid $400 for THAT is not known to me. I felt bad because even my amazing, young, stylist saw the total that the manager charged me and looked very apologetic. I got a shampoo (no special hair masks or anything) and did not even get my blow-dried or styled in a fancy and time consuming way (more so due to a time constraint) so I'm not sure how the total ended up being $400. Again, I have nothing bad to say about my experience...but I also don't have anything great to say. I can conclude, however, that it was not worth the price. On a side note, I got my original Balayage at Reverie Salon and I paid HALF the price (for a full, first time balayage) AND I got my hair curled, a hair mask and champagne. Just moved back to Chicago and this was my first time at Mane (Mar 30) and I will never go back. I came in with light brown hair/blonde balayage and wanted to go a few shades lighter for summer. I agreed to a full highlight and full balayage to make the blonde fresh and natural - but indicated that I can't have reddish tones or warmth in my hair because my skin is pink. The (expert?) colorist highlighted my hair into a fully warm-toned red hue with gray ash balayage that was immediately wrong. The salon was closing (I was there from 12pm-5pm) so she recommended I buy neutropenia clarifying shampoo on the way home to rid of the gray ash balayage streaks and come back the following week for a color correction to the red warmth. Cost for day 1? $523.60 + tip I came back the following Saturday (Apr 6) for a (free) color correction and spent 3 more hours with foils and toners to have the exact same problem again. To her credit, she was visibly upset and tried to explain that my hair will always lighten to warm (i.e., red) despite the fact that it's never happened in the 20 years I've had professional colorist, so she eventually toned it back to a light brown to try and sink some of the warmth (but failed). In short, after two days, 10+ hours, and $600, I have red-gold chunks in brown hair that will need to be fixed elsewhere (after 6 weeks so my hair doesn't break). See photo. Galina did my cut, color and style. She's absolutely fabulous. She was great to talk to, very educated on their products and answered all my questions. She listened to what I wanted and executed it perfectly! (Check out my before and after picture I posted) ever since I posted that picture on Facebook, over 8 of my friends have asked me where I got my hair done! 2. I also had my eyebrows waxed by Sherri. At first I was very scared because I've been getting my eyebrows waxed by the same person for years, but change sometimes is great! I read so many amazing reviews about Sherri that I couldn't pass it up and honestly, I felt as though my eyebrows were the best ever after her appointment! She really knows how to perfect my eyebrow shape! She's literally is the best in Chicago! 3. The salon itself is absolutely beautiful. You should just go and see it because it is that gorgeous. Whoever designed the interior, props to them! Every detail is beautiful. 4. They use MorrocanOil and Kerastase products which are both absolutely amazing! I have been using MoroccanOil products for years so it was great to go to a salon that uses them consistently. I was recommended to Tammy at Mane by a friend and let me tell you, I am soooo glad I went. I am constantly getting compliments on my hair. I have very curly,frizzy, dry hair and Tammy really took the time to really assess it before doing anything. I told her I like low maintenance and that I wear it curly most of the time but occasionally flat iron it. I also told her I had gone to someone prior to achieve an ombre but was not satisfied with the results. After our consultation she went to work and I came out a brand new woman! I've been getting my hair cut by Galina @ Mane Salon for a few years and she is just the best. My husband gets his hair cut by her, and she also did my hair on my wedding day. Just recently, she did a balayage color to my hair and it turned out beautiful. She is such a hardworking, upbeat, motivated person and an extremely knowledgeable artist. She takes her time with her work and is proud of her talent. We consider her a friend and someone we trust. I also had Rachel A. help with my bridesmaids on my wedding day and she did a wonderful job as well - both Galina & Rachel have a talent for creating naturally beautiful up-dos. The management takes great pride in their business and it shows. I can tell you all of the stylists are really talented from going there and seeing their work over and over again. Mane Salon is a cutting edge, beautifully unique space located in the heart of an up-and-coming neighborhood. This salon is near in our house, I always saw this on my way to work that's why I got curious these past few days. And because of that, I decided to visit here and try their service. And in fairness, they got a nice place for this kind of business. When I entered, I noticed that they got a clean surrounding and very well-organized staffs unlike to some salon that I went to before. The ambiance was good, I quietly like it. For the staffs, as I said they look organize and they entertain their customers so well, they are interactive and always communicate with us time to time, asking us if we are still okay, or if we are comfortable with our positions or are we bothered on how they touch or press our hair. I've been with Dani for over 4 years and she is not only a phenomenal stylist, but a funny, caring, and genuine person who has become one of my great friends. I've had black, brown, auburn, and golden tones and she's managed to do the different colors effortlessly all the while not destroying my super fine hair. I think she's incredibly talented with both colors and cuts which is great for me to have just one person to trust with my hair. I have complete faith in Dani because she listens and gives me my desired results while taking into consideration the health of the hair. Most recently (see pictures), I haven't colored my hair in a few months and wanted to soften my natural color and start the process to go a bit lighter. Dani captured my idea and vision perfectly and I can't wait for our next appointment. Mane is a hip and welcoming salon, with the most adorable decor. I'm obsessed with the amazing custom mirrors and décor in the waiting area. Someone greets you - whether it's your stylist or not- every time you walk in and offers a refreshing beverage. Everyone that works there is truly amazing and makes every client, new or old, feel welcome! The vibe is trendy but relaxed, modern but comfortable. The location is great as far as straightforward street parking (pay or side streets if you're lucky) and it's near the Grand/Halsted - Blue Line el stop too. They carry the best products on the market: Oribe, R+Co (my personal favorite), Kerastase, and Moroccon Oil. I went to Mane salon for the first time and had my hair cut and styled by Sandra. Let me start off by saying that she is a gift from the hair goddesses. I could have not been happier with my hair, and practically skipped out of the salon with giddiness. My long hair is my baby. After 6 years of patience growing it out from a spontaneous pixie, it's alllllllmost the length I want. I told Sandra that I wanted to continue growing mid back length hair, but wanted some shape and texture. She did exactly that, giving me soft, flowy texture - and talking me through it every step of the way. She explained what she was doing and why, and even told me the products she was using (but NOT in a pushy/selling way). The bottom line is, she gave me the hair I wanted, and I left her chair feeling like a trillion dollars. This was my first experience at this salon and my goodness was it just what I expected! Lauren was my wonderful stylist and I couldn't have been more happy to have stumbled upon her. She was inviting and wonderful to talk to - we chatted the whole time and laughed, which made me feel comfortable. Aside from that, let's focus on the hair. She did an AMAZING balayage. What made me feel the best was that she took her time (3 hours) to perfect everything. I left the salon feeling rejuvenated and beautiful! I have never written a review, but Lauren's talent and bright personality sparked me to do so. The only thing that hits ya is the price....but hey, sometimes you just need that extra pampering and I promise you it's worth every penny! Sandra is amazing! I went to get a haircut last week and she did what she does best- she always helps me look good with a fresh cut and style. Sandra takes the time to ask what I'm looking for but I honestly trust her professional opinion on what works best for me - we work together and the results are great, I always get compliments on how healthy my hair looks. If you're looking for a certain look, she's your girl! but if you're not quite sure of what you want, rest assured that she has a good eye and can do magic...She has a gift!
