We thankfully found this spot after an awesome workout at The Garage Chicago and let me tell you. It is the BEST haircare experience in the city. I've tried many salons to achieve the perfect slanted bob but it's left me with horrible results. I came in and they were just so friendly, especially the girl who took care of my hair, Ana. My hair was just a mess, it looked like a mullet in the back and I had an undercut which was totally uneven. It took me months to grow out my hair so that I can attempt this look and crossed my fingers that it would come out the way I wanted it to come out. Ana was very nice and was able to transform my horrible hair into something beautiful. I have very thick hair so it's been very hard to achieve a lightweight look but Ana managed to work her magic and make it look amazing. I am definitely satisfied and will be coming back for sure. A true Gem in the City. Wonderful vegan & cruelty free salon that is, without a doubt, the most adorable salon I've ever visited. Chelsea cut my hair and it was the best haircut I've gotten in years. Chelsea has been cutting my hair since 2009 and I was so happy to have her cutting me behind the chair again (she took some time away from the industry). The Salon is laid back, yet uber trendy - quaint yet posh. The vibe of the salon is hard to describe - you'll have to book to fully understand. Some salons I've visited I've been able to tell there is "drama" under the surface between the staff. Here it's clear all of the stylists and staff are friends, work as a team and enjoy their profession. It's a high end salon without any hint of pretentiousness. I haven't met the owner but it is clear she knows what she's doing based on the ascetic of the space, the talent she's recruited, and the "vibe" of the salon. As a small business owner myself I know how difficult it is to get "everything right" and the owner seems to have done it. I was immediately greeted with a smile, was offered amazing snacks and coffee and left feeling energized (again, the "vibe/energy" here is contagious). I've referred several friends to see Chelsea and they have all been as impressed as I was. Easy street parking, central to everything, and reasonable prices. I will certainly be back. The owner, Tricia, is a total gem of person! I went there last week for the first time. My hair had become badly damaged so I was nervous about a cut but excited to start my journey of hair healing! Tricia made me feel relaxed, and she listened with great kindness to my situation (I was pretty emotional going in, but her demeanor was so calm - she's perfect for this industry). She worked with me to set up some future hair goals, and offered some awesome vegan product suggestions which I took her up on. The salon itself is small with just a few chairs, and has a sweet, friendly energy. The front desk worker (I'm sorry, I didn't get her name), was also very friendly and professional. I got the vibe from everyone there that they care about people, and want everyone to have a nice experience, which totally reflects on Tricia. They were very nice, even gave me a free 2 minute conditioning but my stylist barely even blew dry my hair all the way and her other client showed up so she rushed and just twirled my hair in her fingersa bunch to "curl" it and when I said can we do more, it looks pretty frizzy and unstyled, she sprayed it with something else and called it a day. A "style" is listed as part of the cost of the service so im pretty disappointed with that. read more

I actually prefer all my hair products to be conflict-filled and controversial. That's the only downside to Starship, since they offer cruelty-free products. I'm also a lover of blood diamonds. Starship has a really chic space, whatever that means. If you go, make sure you look up and appreciate the cool ceiling. I went to be Constance's hair model (she's a newer stylist there). She did an amazing job, and I look even better than I did when I arrived. I didn't know that was possible. I'm also very humble. I'm Asian, and so there's this consensus that you must go to an Asian place to get your hair did right. Well, a few months ago I went to a non-Asian barbershop in Chicago and, compared to this haircut, it was pretty bad. Thus, I was quite wary coming into Starship. But WOW Constance did a great job. I received a partial highlight and cut by Constance at Starship Salon a few weeks ago. She did an excellent job listening to what I wanted before the hair work began. She even got out her iPad to look at colors and styles with me to make sure she did exactly what I was wanting. I'm so indecisive and I really appreciated her patience as I was trying to figure out how I wanted my hair. The final color was perfect and the cut was done in a way to bring out my facial features. I hate getting my hair cut. After many terrible experiences, including (but not limited to) multiple mushroom cuts, Disney teenybopper layers, and a haircut that got laughed at by my family as soon as I walked in the door, I have avoided haircuts if all possible. I booked for the next day and could probably even have booked for the same day since this place is not yet discovered. - Complimentary Dark Matter coffee (the best coffee roaster in Chicago IMO), a selection of teas, or water as you wait. - Jill, my stylist, was very easy to talk to and the sweetest hair stylist I've ever worked with. - All the products are vegan! How did I not realize vegan salons existed before?! I discovered them at a Vegan Vortex event, and I've been trying to veganize my beauty routine (NOT easy), but Starship Salon does all the work for you by carrying high quality hair care products and makeup in store and all vegan. Yay! - Gorgeous, sun-soaked space, like straight out of a magazine - No pretension whatsoever. The space and the staff are low-key and genuine. Everyone seems happy to be there. - Great location for biking or parking (free parking in the surrounding neighborhood). Right next to Star Lounge Coffee and just down the street from Squasht (a super cute shop). - Haircuts start at $55-$75 depending on your stylist. I have been going to Starship for over six months and absolutely love it (enough to make the commute from Rogers Park)! The salon is small but extremely clean and has a lovely minimalist vibe. The staff is super friendly, especially Sam at desk and the coffee is delicious (Dark Matter). The products are pricey but being a salon that cares about others and saving the earth, it is not outrageous and Kevin Murphy's products are almost all vegan and smell amazing! On to the actual haircut: I found Starship at a Vegan Vortex event. I had been looking for a green (but preferably vegan) salon for a while and was underwhelmed by the green salon I was at previously. I had been growing out a short bob with bangs and just couldn't get the right "this isn't horrible or a mullet" style with my previous stylist. I called Starship and set up an appointment with Markie and I will never go back. Markie is fantastic and listened to what I hoped to achieve with my hair, what I currently hated about my hair and my daily routine. More than listen she actually gave me a haircut that fit everything I needed. Constance is awesome. At other salons, I sometimes have a hard time communicating what I want. Constance is a great listener and always spends time consulting with me at the start of appointments. She does my color and is very thoughtful about it, sometimes getting input from the other stylists. It seems to me the stylists really work as a team. She is up to date with fashion. Have you tried to show a picture of a model/celebrity to your hairdresser to get the style without them make you feel weird about the comparison? I was going to show her a picture of me, but my last picture that showed in my phone was of a model. I wasn't going to show her that. But she saw it, got her iPad and search for images of that model. I was coming from out of state and only had a short window of time available to do my wedding hair/makeup trial and they opened on a Monday (which they're usually closed on) just to squeeze me in for my trial. They even rushed out of their hair class just to make it in time to accommodate my schedule. I love their products which are all vegan. Sean and Jasmine were great at being flexible in terms of what I wanted or any changes of how I wanted to do to my hair/makeup. They're so nice and easy to talk to too. The only other thing to note as that they are slow to reply to emails, so it might be easier to just call them. But otherwise everyone at Starship Salon are wonderful! read more

I've been coming here for years. Literally the only salon I've ever been to that can get flat brown hair to look like natural looking red hair. I've had a number of different stylists -- Laura Ann and Sean are my go-to's. They colored my hair before my wedding and it was flawless. They are great people too-- I would recommend this edgy vegan friendly salon to anyone and everyone. Started going to Starship after my old salon shut down. Not only is Starship SUPER close to my house, Mark gives a KILLER haircut. He really spends the time making sure it's perfect and I always leave feeling fabulous. I love that they are vegan-friendly and use Kevin Murphy products. Kevin Murphy is my favorite line. I was given an appointment with Laura Ann Evelyn and she was so friendly and knew all about their vegan hair products. Me hair is fairly curly and I came in with the knowledge that the wonderful Jill will work with my curls. I came in and was very much welcomed and offer drinks.
