A little pricey, but boy do they make you look and feel like a QUEEN!! They were super awesome and fit me in last minute. I saw Eddie and Jim for my cut and color. I had been going to the same hair salon in Logan square for 10 years, so I was hesitant about seeing someone else. Jim was super knowledgeable and knew the color to use for my skin tone. He is honestly a magician with a brush. The apprentice that washed my hair was also such a sweetheart and took his time to wash and give a relaxing head massage. Then it was Eddie's turn to finish me off. I've never seen a man work so fast and so good w a pair of scissors. He was such a pro. He's a young man, so I was shocked just how good he is at his craft. The first time Kelsey did my hair, I told her I wanted to go as light as possible to eventually get to an ashy silver blonde, and wanted no gold tones at all. I am a natural dirty blonde who hadn't had my hair dyed in over 2 years, so figured it would take 2ish sessions. When finished, it looked like it still had undertones of gold which i mentioned, so she offered a silver toner for me to purchase and use the next day as she didn't want to push it in the session. I did and unfortunately it didn't help much, so she brought me back in and was kind enough to tone the gold out for free. This time, I made sure to show a specific picture of where I wanted to get, and she only touched up my roots and tried to tone the rest. She asked my thoughts post drying, and I said it wasn't as light as I wanted and was still getting some gold tones. She said it would lighten more once I washed with my violet shampoo. (Pic of what I wanted and where I ended up are attached). Does my hair look cute? Sure it's fine. Is it what I wanted? Absolutely not. I feel like I've wasted almost $800 now and would have appreciated an honest answer at my initial appointment on if she could actually get me there or not. Cannot say enough good things about Paige. I've gotten a ballyage (I can never spell it and she is SUPER nice about that) from her three times now, and my color is AMAZING. Not to be hyperbolous, but she is the best. Really. As far as lightening goes, she did take her time - it takes a hot minute to go from brown to platinum, sorry not sorry. But it was worth the wait. My hair is not only blonde AF but it's healthy. Multiple treatments were worth it. This might be a silly thing to say, but I have a touch of social anxiety as far as this kind of thing goes and Paige is great about sensing when I want to chat and when I just want to not chat. She's a delightful person in addition to the important thing which is being really talented. Also, it's covid so you know I have to mention THAT SANITATION GURL. They took my temp, sanitized my hands, and I saw a lot of wiping down/cleaning. The salon clearly cares about their employees and that translates into caring about their clients. The superstar of hair stylists in Chicago and the suburbs is Karah, who is one of a kind to be sure. Using the very top of the line equipment in clippers she is able select the precise blade size that will make the difference in getting a good styling and one that really stands out from any other. While being very meticulous she is not going to run the clock out by superficially snipping away as I've experienced in salons with supposedly great reputations. It is not surprising that Karah is heavily booked, and no doubt heavily recruited by other salons. She is not going to just try and copy the style you walked in with, but create and/or modify the style that you actually want, as men change their hair style from time to time just as women do. With her vivacious personality and energy she would even get an introverted person engaged in what she is doing, so as to bring about the best desired result. She is not going to fly solo and just hope her client is satisfied at the end, which I've experienced in some salons. If you are a conversationalist, Karah will make the time fly by with her engaging and humorous personality. After a hair cutting/styling session with Karah, you are not going to walk away thinking you were paying mainly for a salon's reputation. I know that I will no longer dread how my hair appointment is going to turn out or if the stylist just went through the motions. read more

It was a tough decision but one I am happy with. I came here and saw Valerie. She was very attentive and empathetic to my hesitation with switching stylists which was very much appreciated and had me feeling much more comfortable. Overall the studio is very chic and the decor has some western accent pieces and is also modern. The products they use are Oribe, which had a very nice scent to it and the hairspray was fantastic. I do wish the stylist had either the same or (very) similar styling tools. This part felt like the salon didn't have a cohesive approach to branding. The customer service is fantastic, offering water, wine and it's easy to feel welcomed here. This was great as I was here for some time getting a cut and added some mocha baylage (this took a while). Valerie is absolutely amazing! I was looking to try something new, and Salon DJ Hairtography was right next to work. Valerie became my stylist and talked me through what I was looking on changing and playing around with. She walked me through a few styles and I could not trust her more. She's extremely knowledgable and patient with someone who, for the most part, just pulls her hair up in a ponytail. Valerie decided to play with my bangs a bit and I am in love. Thank you for hiding my five-head! We played with a little bit of curl and wave to add body to my thin, stick-straight hair. I have love my hair every time I get out of her chair. The Oribe products that she uses smell amazing and my hair feels so natural after, but still retains the style! I found the parking in the area at that time was difficult, but it was worth it then and now, since there is an adjacent parking lot (discount offered from salon), I find it a pleasure. The other pleasure is the customer service, complementary drinks offered upon entering the very cool designed salon. Every detail has been covered to bring comfort, personal attention and friendliness to everyone who comes in. My colorist, Jim Clark is exceptional in his Kraft. I find finding the perfect color hues for my mousy brown hair is a challenge, but Jim seems to find the perfect color which makes me so happy. He finds the right time to put highlights in to complement the overall look. And then there is Eddie Diebold. New to the salon, he has become a tremendous asset to the salon. WOW! I took a chance on SalonDJ after two different colorists at Salon 1800 completely failed at giving me the white blonde hair I had before moving to Chicago. When I walked into SalonDJ my once white blonde hair was an ashy brown because of a root tap. I felt terrible and just prayed Jim could make me brighter, if not white blonde like I had been before. I also needed a haircut, so I booked with Karah after reading these two were a dynamic duo. First thing's first - the salon itself is a gorgeous space and the folks at the front desk were super welcoming, offering a variety of beverages. Phew. I already felt better. I was greeted promptly by both Karah and Jim, which I loved because it meant I didn't have to explain what I wanted twice. You can tell instantly that these two have worked together for years because their recommendations play off one another. Jim would say or suggest something and then Karah would complement it. They seemed to really "get it" and when Jim went to mix up my color I was feeling confident, but not sure - I had been recently wronged twice and was still nervous. I won't go through all the details of the next four hours Jim and Karah spent on my hair but suffice to say they absolutely nailed it. Jim exceeded my expectations. I'm a bright blonde again and feel like myself. We both agreed that the next I see him I can be platinum. Karah cut my hair afterward and took so much time making sure we preserved length while cutting off the split ends. I'm SO happy with my hair and glad I found these two. Not only are they extremely talented but also fabulous to talk to - I couldn't have felt more comfortable while I spent five hours here (I was even offered - and accepted - wine as the afternoon went on). I should also mention that SalonDJ carries top-notch products, including Kevin Murphy, Olaplex, and Oribe, and Karah gave me some great recommendations without being pushy. TLDR/ you are new to Chicago and are looking for a stylist at or beyond par with what you are used to or you are looking for a new amazing stylist - Choose Amy. I have been seeing Amy since I moved to Chicago earlier this year. I'm on my fourth or fifth appointment with her. I've given up my very hard hold on what I have wanted with my hair, to what she thinks is best (color (single process plus full foil), and cut). Her knowledge is insane, she can recount what color you need from memory, and will sit there and literally snip a single hair that is out of place based on what you want, and make it come to life. I've had both great and terrible experiences with salons in the past, but today, at my latest appointment where we planned to do foils for the first time i had no issue saying, "do what you think is best" - The color looks incredible. As someone with dark brown hair that has had lightning done in the past that did not look natural - these foils have a sparkle of sorts, you cant tell I have highlights, but you can tell there is something cool there - exactly what i wanted, and what she said she could deliver. "Dimension" is what she called it. As for the cut, I held tight the first few times, having bad layers done in the past. The second to last time i asked her to cut in some cool bangs (shag, but not shag) and it was awesome, because it looked so great the last time, i asked her to cut in further to make it fuller and I ended up feeling bad for the amount of time and detail she took to make it perfect (knowing i'm uneasy with layers, from past stylists) I left feeling AWESOME, my hair is perfect (cut and color), not a hair out of place. Also - she is just a cool person. She is easy to chat with, happy to talk through how she is doing things. Also, the apprentices at the salon are just are great with washing / rinsing and making you feel cozy while you are there. Today, Sabrina let me know about the training programs they go through at the salon, sounded like they pick the best, and train them up to help them be the best stylists to bring on the floor when they are ready.
