My Taco Bell spirit animal Colorist Jim is amazing - always coming through with icy blonde highlight and taming this mane on in-between bumps. Queen Karah wields her scissors like some type of sorcerer - nary a hair will be out of place before you leave. They are the dream pair for hair therapy - my hair-ipists if you will. It's been about 2 months and I still can't stop raving about Anna at Salon DJ. TL;DR: Anna isn't just a hair stylist, she's a magician. I left Salon DJ feeling like I was about to go walk the red carpet. Everyone around me keeps telling how much they love my haircut. Legit, jaws still drop. No one's ever obsessed with my hair thissss much. My boyfriend's been on cloud 9 (he wasn't sure what I'd look like with short hair-- it was getting chopped regardless of what anyone thought). TLDR/ you are new to Chicago and are looking for a stylist at or beyond par with what you are used to or you are looking for a new amazing stylist - Choose Amy. I have been seeing Amy since I moved to Chicago earlier this year. I'm on my fourth or fifth appointment with her. I've given up my very hard hold on what I have wanted with my hair, to what she thinks is best (color (single process plus full foil), and cut). Her knowledge is insane, she can recount what color you need from memory, and will sit there and literally snip a single hair that is out of place based on what you want, and make it come to life. I've had both great and terrible experiences with salons in the past, but today, at my latest appointment where we planned to do foils for the first time i had no issue saying, "do what you think is best" - The color looks incredible. As someone with dark brown hair that has had lightning done in the past that did not look natural - these foils have a sparkle of sorts, you cant tell I have highlights, but you can tell there is something cool there - exactly what i wanted, and what she said she could deliver. "Dimension" is what she called it. As for the cut, I held tight the first few times, having bad layers done in the past. The second to last time i asked her to cut in some cool bangs (shag, but not shag) and it was awesome, because it looked so great the last time, i asked her to cut in further to make it fuller and I ended up feeling bad for the amount of time and detail she took to make it perfect (knowing i'm uneasy with layers, from past stylists) I left feeling AWESOME, my hair is perfect (cut and color), not a hair out of place. Also - she is just a cool person. She is easy to chat with, happy to talk through how she is doing things. Also, the apprentices at the salon are just are great with washing / rinsing and making you feel cozy while you are there. Today, Sabrina let me know about the training programs they go through at the salon, sounded like they pick the best, and train them up to help them be the best stylists to bring on the floor when they are ready. I've been searching for 25 years in Chicago for someone who truly knows how to cut hair. Most stylists tend to mask the cut with a good blow out and curls, only to discover over the next few days that it's really not a good cut at all. I have straight, fine, but thick, hair so it does not hide mistakes. Finding someone to take out weight and create movement without giving me choppy layers has been impossible. I go from one person to the next, trying to grow out my hair, getting choppy layers and then having to cut it short again and so on. After another bad choppy cut, I discovered Salon DJ online. I called and spoke to Sabrina and she steered me towards Daniel. After about two minutes of talking with him, I knew that he got it and had a repertoire of techniques beyond blunt cutting and standard layers (point cutting and more). He was meticulous and spent about 90 mins with me. He not only fixed my bad cut, but has given me one of the best haircuts of my life. He's also given me a plan to help me grow it out over time. I've finally found my hairstylist soulmate . If you are looking to fix a bad cut, do not look elsewhere and book with Daniel immediately! Also, everybody in the salon was so nice and welcoming. I didn't get hair cut but a spray tan because I wanted to feel like I looked alive lol The salon is really nice , it's on the second floor of a industrial looking building but once inside it's super welcoming . The staff are really nice and helpful !! My first time getting a spray tan and it was awesome !! I lost the card of the person who did my spray but she has long hair and super sweet !! She contoured my face with the spray tan so well !! She gave me high check bones and even contoured around my nose ! Lol I never knew the magic of the spray tan ! I can't recommend this place enough !! The lady who does spray tans is really nice and listens to how you want to look and takes her time to make sure it looks good . Recently I was referred by a friend to see Jim at SalonDJ Hairtography. I needed to get my hair highlighted and was in need of a new salon. Last week was my first time at Salon DJ and I highly recommend this salon for many reasons! First, I was instantly pleased with how kind the staff was upon my arrival. I had partial highlights with Jim, and I am beyond happy! He did an incredible job, and I barely had to provide any direction. I showed him a couple of photos, and he went right to it. I have struggled with finding colorists in Chicago that do blondes really well, and I'm so thrilled I finally found Jim! Additionally, the salon was observing all COVID preventative measures (masks required for everyone, COVID exposure questions and temperature check before entering, plexiglass partitions up throughout the entire salon, and plenty of hand sanitizer wherever you looked). I've been going to Nikki for almost a year for color and recently got my first Nikki haircut. She is wonderful! She takes the time to make sure your hair color is perfect. I started seeing her 6 months before my wedding...literally the only time I'd ever care if I have perfect hair. And she nailed my hair color. I absolutely love it! I got highlights before my wedding and just switched over to balayage again. Even the transition from highlights back to balayage was seamless for her. When I got my haircut we chopped off 5+ inches and I'm in love with the cut. Nikki is amazing! The salon is welcoming and warm. They offer coffee, wine, beer, and water while you are there. I've been going to SalonDJ for several years to get my hair cut and colored (highlights or balayage) with Nikki Troester. She is so well trained at her craft and is really an artist. Before I moved to Chicago, I had had my hair cut and colored by the same stylist for about 8 years and was very reluctant to try someone new. Nikki built my trust over time, to the point that I felt 100% comfortable just telling her the "vibe" I was looking for (e.g., "summery, lighter" or, when I was starting job interviews, "professional, lower maintenance") and trusted that she would translate this vision into something that was flattering to my skin tone, face shape, and hair texture. Our most recent project was to go almost fully blonde (my natural hair color is black). We'd discussed doing this for over a year before finally taking the plunge. She set expectations appropriately (it would take several visits, at a higher frequency than usual in order to transition my hair color in a way that was SAFE for my hair.) I sadly am leaving Chicago permanently for a new job, but she even had a suggestion for a stylist in my new city and texted that stylist to fill her in on the specific dyes she'd been using, our blonde-ification project, etc. She totally didn't have to go to that length, but did because 1) she is a really warm, wonderful person AND 2) she is a true artist who wants to make sure the hair she's spent years working on (mine) continues to look its best.
