I passed by Mandi house on the way back from work one day and I saw they had whole fish dishes. I am a huge fan of whole fish so of course I ordered this for my first time take out visit on my birthday. I loved it. The taste and flavors were fresh and the fish was a good side as well. The rice was well seasoned and perfectly cooked too. My boyfriend got another meal with fries so of course I took some of his to try. The fries were a bit too crispy for our liking but the rest was yummy. I also got the baba ghannoj Whig is my fav as well. It's been a while so I had to splurge a bit. read more

3/15/25: Short version - very delicious food, friendly staff, beautiful decor. It did take some time for the food to come out, the interior was clean (but also a bit tight w/ tables & booths), parking lot is not well striped, blind driveway could be disastrous if you're not careful. Longer version - Mandi House has been on my list of places to try for a very long time. This particular Saturday we finally decided to check it out. Parking? Their parking lot is on the east side (west side is the apartment complex). It is a tight driveway, I do not think two cars would fit if one were heading in and another out (especially if one of those cars as an mammoth SUV). It is a very blind driveway coming out. There is a "watch for pedestrians & bikes" sign (that has been graffitied) but we discovered just how low the visibility is (thanks to the building on their east side). Thankfully it was spring break for ASU, because honestly, we had to stick the nose of the car so far out in order to see any kind of traffic (vehicular of foot) that I can see how easy it would be for a collision to occur. Don't let that stop you from trying out Mandi House, just be very careful. The parking lot wasn't the cleanest and I think its overdue for some new striping, but it was fairly large. Food/Drinks? Tasty and hot, cold & bubbly, respectively. Not going to lie, we did almost turn around & leave once walking into the door -- but only because we saw a butt load of buffet bins laid out on multiple tables. We thought "Is this a buffet place?" We kept going in anyway, which is when we saw a few booths full of people, and figured they were just cleaning up the bins, preparing for a buffet at some later date & time. We placed our order (hummus, hannieth meat, mathbi meat (both lamb dishes, one spicy, the other sweet). Unfortunately they were out of all their juices (I wanted mango), so we had to scour the multitude of drinks in their coolers, settling on a couple Freez mixes (pomegranate, lemon & ginger). It did take some time for the hummus to come out, so be patient. The food is worth the wait. The pita came out steaming hot, and we devoured the entire thing. Pita was so dang good we asked for more. Our entree plates came out & we both gasped at how large the plates were. The lamb was fall-off-the-bone delicious. I mean it -- it really fell off the bone. The rice was interesting, in that we saw three colors. It was a very colorful plate of scrumptious food. The Hannieth Meat I got was just this side of spicy; not burn-your-mouth spicy, simply full of flavor. The Mathbi Meat dish my sister got was on the sweet side. Both of us enjoyed the food immensely. We opted to go for dessert: kinafa. It was nothing we had ever tried before, and the gentleman behind the counter (Ral?) was very nice & explained the difference to me -- its description read cheese, but he explained at Mandi House they use a cream. As he was explaining it, I laughed an said "so the cheese isn't a mozzarella or anything?" But apparently, he said some places to actually use that type of cheese, but they wash off the salt. Huh, learn something new every day. Which brings me to ... Staff? Ral was actually the only staff we spoke to, since he not only took our orders but brought the food out as well. We did see a couple other gentleman walking around but one appeared to be focused on bussing the tables and the other seemed to be cleaning up the restaurant in general. Ral was polite & friendly. The kinafa came out hot, and we had another laugh because we had seen the dish in their display case. Both of us thought it was rice. Ral laughed along with us, saying that's what most people think it is. We dug in. It was yummy. It was crunchy (thanks to the shredded phyllo dough), but with a creamy center. It had a touch of sweetness. If you have had baklava, think half of that sweetness. That is how mild the kinafa was. Luckily we were full from the other grub, so we were able to save some for leftovers. Would we visit Mandi House again? Most assuredly. read more

Located in downtown Tempe is this Middle Eastern restaurant serving Halal Yemeni food. I have a big appreciation for their culture. We came during Ramadan week... and even at midnight this place stays open till 4am. Surprisingly there was people coming for pick up and people still feasting at the midnight hour. This place is a hole in the wall, that needs a little more tender love and care. At night time the parking in the back was a lil sketch but we were not deterred. They have outdoor seating with lighting. Inside the building, upon going in they have traditional seating similarly like a tea room with seated cushion on the floor and mini tables. Then to the main dining area are booths and a bar with classic candies in the front fridge. I saw there was a buffet line, so I would love to come next time during the time they serve buffet. We were greeted with the best service and great hospitality, with the host showing us the menu and explaining recommendations. We sat at a table that was a little wobbly so then we moved to the booth that had me sinking into my seat. But we found a table that was just right for us. You have to go to the register and order and then seat yourself. We chose to eat the Mathbi Meat with grilled lamb with the mixed appetizer that had fattoush, tabouleh, baba ganoush, and hummus. Everything came fresh to order and for a table for two, we shared our food with the portion just perfect. We were impressed with everything to be so delicious. The lamb was tender and the rice complemented the dish. The naan with the appetizer dishes married well with our entree. I was so impressed. I loved the tabouleh the most because it was so fresh. For dessert we tried the massoub. I'd recommend this for breakfast because it was like eating roasted banana with an oatmeal consistency of bread, with some tart cream and sesame seeds. Finalizing my meal, I kept going back and forth to grab the complimentary tea at table to the back corner. The cinnamon warmth flavor aided my digestion. I loved it so much! There is no doubt we will return if I feel like being a night owl out in town.. This one has been on my list for a while. In observation of Ramadan, there was a buffet during the iftar time (sunset) and the place was packed. The line was long but everyone was patient and respectful. The service was good but with the sheer amount of customers it was hard for the staff as well. For the food, it was wonderful. They had about 20+ different items, including hot and cold appetizers and entrees. Some of the things that stood out for me were the lamb rice, kidney, kebabs, braised chicken, and the chicken curry. They even had desserts with fresh warm cookies and an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages. I definitely want to come back for a regular dinner and order off the menu. But glad I got to visit during their dinner buffet for this month. read more

This place blew me away. Right at the entrance. You could tell it was going to be good by the number of people just visiting. I got the biryani and the kofta to go but ended up dining in. They have an area where you take your shoes off and sit down traditionally to have your meal. The food was out of this world. Felt like a true home cooked meal from my grandparents. The portions are also a great welcome being that you could get two meals out of it. The service was quick and the guys at the register were great to work with. I finally tried the Mandi house! Main things to note, is that you order at the counter and pay at the counter, however the food is brought out to your table. The one thing I loved at the restaurant that stands out from everywhere else I've been is that they have an area with traditional sitting that is closer to the floor - it was unclear to me if anyone can eat there or if it's reserved but it was beautiful. Food wise the flavors were great, food was well cooked, every order came out correct and I appreciated the fact that they have halal options and gyro that does not include pork. That said the flavors were slightly different from other places in the valley, probably the Yemen touch and it had a bit too much clover for my taste but that's absolutely a person by person thing and I still highly recommend for folks to try it first because you might love this! It comes with a creamy sauce and a spicy sauce - both were delicious. Four stars instead of five ONLY because there are other middle eastern spots in the valley where the food is even better but if it wasn't for the competition it would be a 5/5. read more

What a treat to go to a place that has traditional Yemeni and Saudi Arabian food. I got to try the kabsah chicken and the family got a chicken kabob wrap and a lamb one. The kabsah chicken was a new take for me on the chicken and rice dishes, full of aromatic spices and plenty of protein, A+. The wraps had barely any meat, but the taste and price were good. I would recommend throwing a few more pieces of meat in there even if that means charging a bit more, which would still make for a cheap sandwich. My kabsah plate was huge, which I got to share with the family, since they were still hungry with the small wraps. Can't wait to come back to try more dishes from the Yemeni and Saudi areas! read more

Probably the best middle eastern food I've ever had. I had this last night and am already dreaming of coming back. I had the lamb plate which was amazing! The lamb is so soft and tender and rice is so flavorful. Really good food and I really enjoyed eating here. I will say that there weren't that many drinks available for non soda drinkers but I was fine with water. They have complimentary chai tea as well. The food was excellent. We ordered the grilled Lamb and roasted chicken. Both the chicken and lamb were seasoned beautifully. The chicken was also very moist, not dry at all. The rice could've used a bit more seasoning/flavor but can't complain too much. I wish you could substitute the rice for a salad tho, as I try to stay away from access carbs (you might be able to I didn't ask.) We also ordered hummus but they ran out so we didn't get to try it, that was a bummer. The waiter was very sweet and gave us some good recommendations. I love a good family owned restaurant. This place looses some points for the ambiance, it does look a bit ran down from the outside and the inside could use some upgrades. I can't believe I have yet to review this place! I have gone every other month for the last 3 years more or less. The food is amazing! This is a family owned business, when you are ready to order, go to the register to place your order. They are all really sweet and pleasant! Here is a list of my favorites: *disclaimer: our spice threshold is higher than most people, we are south Asian and can handle spice. Chicken biryani: 5/5 (recommend getting spice level 4/10 for those with similar spice tolerance as us). The chicken is well seasoned, never dry, the rice is always fluffy and it's soooo good. FYI, sometimes biryani takes about 20 minutes to make, but for us it's worth the wait! Chicken/Lamb Mandi: 4/5. it's a much milder dish that I get if I don't want a lot of spice, the rice and meat are not as spicy as the biryani dish but just as well seasoned and tasty! Chicken maqlooba: 5/5; the way the veggies are fried, the rice, the chicken! It's so good!! I usually get a mild spice level when getting this dish because I don't want the spice level to overwhelm the other flavors in the dish. That free complimentary mint tea: please inject me with it! Wow. This place is special. Tempe is lucky to have such an amazing restaurant. Yemeni restaurant are rare, and this place have a wide variety of Yemeni dishes that are delicious and hard to find. Their Kabsa, which is a Saudi dish is also amazing. The shrimp Kabsa reminds me of a really good paella. The grilled fish is delicious, the lamb Mandi was great as well. GOOD AF !! (Authentic, Fresh) Mandi House is representing Yemen and their Middle Eastern flavors. Ordered a 3 MEAT COMBO, not on menu (see pics). It consisted of lamb, chick and fish- pampano and a heaping portion of rice. Huge platter for $46 and could feed 4-5 people. Homestyle goodness as good as it gets. The meats were well seasoned, moist and tender. Leg and thigh chicken meat fell off the bone. Lamb was the same, served on the bone but no trouble picking it off. Whole fish was cooked perfectly- moist, not dry. The chicken and fish had grill treatment giving it that nice amount of char on the outside. You can tell everything is made in-house and fresh. The homemade yogurt sauce was the perfect condiment for the lamb. They also had a 'salsa' that had a bit of heat and accompanied the fish and chicken just right. Rice perfectly cooked and seasoned, I could almost eat that by itself with some veggies if you are vegetarian. Enjoy complimentary hot sweetened tea to wash the palate. I had to order at the counter. Not sure if it was because they were short of wait staff. But not a huge inconvenience. There was one guy taking orders at the time, running the floor, who later came to bring our water and later the food. Like Arabic food? Ever try Yemen cuisine? Well I believe it was my first time and they have gained another satisfied customer of their cuisine. Yemen food is now officially one of my favorites! The way they prepare the food is unique. They specialize in Mandi style cooking which is very flavorful with aromatics. It is traditionally cooked in a tabun, a clay oven shaped like a truncated cone. The meal is served on a bed of basmati rice and usually topped with some kind of smoky meat or meats. We ordered the combo platter which included Mandi meat (lamb), fish (small or large. We ordered large), and chicken. Basmati rice was included with roasted tomato, yogurt, spicy salsa, and a couple wedges of lemon. The picture of our platter doesn't do it justice. It was mouthwatering. I tasted the yogurt sauce and it was so delicious. I never tasted yogurt quite like it. They must either make their own or doctor it up. I saw a Mediterranean couple sitting across from us who ordered the same thing. The woman took her yogurt sauce and poured it all around the rice and mixed it in as they ate; so that's what we did. The rice had fine diced cooked carrots as small as the rice mixed in. It gave it a hint of sweetness and this may be my favorite way of eating Basmati rice. I couldn't stop eating it. Of the three meats, my favorite was definitely the fish. Whatever spices they used and the way it was prepared was outstanding. Such bold flavors. The fish was moist and flavorful. It was especially delicious when I had a fork full of fish, rice, tomato, and yogurt sauce! I ate it this way with each meat. The chicken was surprisingly moist and flavorful, especially being white meat. I want to try it with dark meat next time. The lamb was moist in some areas and dry in others. That was a bit disappointing because I expected to be my favorite because I love lamb. I suspect because it was precooked. How else will they get it to be so tender in such a short period. It was flavored well though. If the lamb was prepared as well as the other two meats, this place would easily receive five stars from me. The gentlemen working that night were very nice and accommodating. And don't let their location dissuade you. I don't know how many of my favorite restaurants are in not the best locations. If you never tried Yemen food, this place is the perfect restaurant to try it at. Do yourself a favor and eat here first before making a to-go order. You won't regret it! read more

Very rarely will I write a review after just one visit. Today I break that informal guideline. My son invited me to meet him at Mandi House, a middle eatern restaurant that he heard about in Tempe. I arrived early and found a stand alone actual old blue building which obviously had once been a home on Apache Blvd just west of McClintock. Parking is located behind the eatery, so you must take the small alley road just east of the building. The house has 3 main areas/rooms that allow inside sit-down, outside dining, and even inside private parties. The staff is polite and very quick to respond to help. While there are a lot of tables for dining in, the traffic for pickup orders is also constant. I began with ordering hummus and pita appetizer. The hummus was very flavorful and the pita fresh, warm and apparently just baked. Excellent. For a main meal, we decided to order a full platter to allow us to try the lamb, fish and chicken. This also came with two types of basmati rice, yogurt sauce and a a delicious kind of salsa. The chicken was fall-off-the-bone tender and nicely flavored. The lamb was roasted, bone-in and juicy. The fish was an entire body, with skin, tasty grilled fish. All of the food was nicely prepared and worked perfect together. Since we had a large platter meant for multiple people the price was about $50, but quite reasonable on a per person basis. I would highly recommend Mandi House to anyone seeking moddle eastern food. This was my third time visiting and the Service was so nice in helping pick out a dish .the lamb was tender and tasty. The baklava really wonderful. I loved the rice! The tea is very nice.
