Halal Chinese (owners are Pakistani). Mandarin excels at spicy and fried! Even their wonton soup has fried (beef) wontons in it. I like their spicy chicken wings, sizzling shrimp, and crispy beef. I also like that you can customize dishes--I ordered chicken with string beans but asked them to add garlic and make it spicy and it was very good. I do NOT like their egg foo young, as they somehow are making a very heavy dish even heavier. The servers are good at making ordering suggestions. Service is good except for Saturday evenings when they are overwhelmed with families--most nights they are not bus at all. Large portions and not expensive. I've been here a handful of times since 2007, nothing about the interior has changed. The food is mediocre now especially after the last visit a few weeks ago. 3 of my cousins, my niece, and I all got sick from the food here, I'm thinking it was food poisoning. I recently ordered takeout and myself along with my family we're not satisfied. We ordered General Tsos beef which was pretty tender but we also ordered General Tsos chicken which there wasn't much chicken to eat because they overcooked it. Pay attention to their white rice when you're eating it. I ordered sesame chicken and the white rice that came along with it had bugs. It was very hard to see because the bugs were white. Old building and dated decor, I'm talking 80s. I did like the spaciousness of the dining room and there are a lot of windows so it feels open and airy. But it could use a little updating; I was a little tentative at first to eat here but the one and only hostess/server, Lily, was very friendly and we chatted up a bit about halal meats and how she has been employed there for as long as the owners took over 8 yrs ago. She said the owners are Chinese but from Pakistan. We were the only table there but by the time we were halfway through, 4 other sets of people had come to dine in too. After ordering, food came out quickly and piping hot. Started with the Hot and sour soup. It was spicy which I liked and the broth was on the bland side not very fragrant but edible and filling. I would order it again. The Hakka beef, strips of a tough cut of beef probably top round, appeared to have been lightly dusted with flour or cornstarch and then deep fried. Poured over it was sweet and a little spicy red sauce. The meat was a bit tough kinda beef jerkyish in texture if you know what I mean. Maybe they could use a sirloin and still make money with the $15 pricetag? The orange chicken was the winner though. It had both dark and white meat in a delicious spicy sweet red sauce similar to the one used for Hakka dish. It was served alongside a handful of broccoli. Each entree was plentiful and could even feed 2-3 hungry people. I ended up getting food containers for both dishes. The steamed white rice had an unusual smell definitely not jasmine kind of chemically smelling. I've been eating sticky white rice of different brands all my life so I know what it shouldn't smell like. I was a little suspect at first but ended up eating a little bit and no problems. It is our go to place whenever we crave for halal Chinese food. You might wanna call for reservation on weekends as it gets busy. We also order takeout all the time from here. They also have a buffet during Ramadan and their lunch specials are very reasonable which comes with a coke or spring roll. We always know what to order as we go there so much and chicken tom yum soup is the first on the list. Whenever it gets colder outside or I start to catch a cold I know I need to have the soup. It's spicy, little sour and sweet with a lot of chicken and mushrooms. The shrimp Tom yum is good too. The large is enough for 3 people in my opinion. Other things I would recommend from there would be the Hakka chicken, sizzling shrimp, my friends love the general tso but it's a little too sweet for my taste, the combination lomein is really good and ask it make it spicy if you want. Also the spicy chicken wings, chicken pakora which come with a great spicy cabbage salad, and the mixed fried rice with Manchuria sauce. For drinks try their mango lassi. My experience here was beyond awful. I ordered orange chicken, veggie noodles, fried rice, and spring rolls. When I took a bite into the chicken, I noticed it tasted very old and was extremely hard to chew, almost had a gum-like consistency on the inside. The outer coating of flavor was great, but you could definitely tell it was probably deep fried frozen then tossed into the orange chicken sauce for flavor. As for the noodles, they are quite thick and definitely overcooked and soggy. They had little to no flavor and were very slimy, not at all appetizing. The spring rolls were o-k but very greasy. But I kid you not, it is literally coleslaw stuffed in a deep fried roll. The fried rice was the only edible food item yet still over fried. This is my very first review ever! I loved this place when it opened, the only halal Chinese restaurant of this entire area. There was a time when the food was good. Even after a few bad trips there, we continued to go here giving it the benefit of the doubt. Last two years the quality of the food has drastically reduced yet the prices have soared. Food always feels microwave hot. Chicken pieces always rubbery, stringy, and chewy. The Hunan chicken especially is bland and tough like it was boiled and added into the vegetable. The cutlery and dishes seem like the same since this place opened. The whole experience of dining here has gone down. They add the gratuity in the check, so they always get their tips no matter how bad the service or the food was. We are regular customers here and have been here many time and tonight we have never been treated more rudely. They messed up our order and made us pay for items we should not have. We spoke with two servers and the owner and they were completely unwilling to work with us. The owner in particular was so hostile to us and threw a fit over a few dollars when like we said we are REGULAR customers. Owner yelled at us and told us to leave and never come back. The buffet is a small little cart and the food ran out so quickly, which made people wait every 10-15 minutes. They had clearly put people who are ordering food a priority and buffet second. I really enjoy coming here esp. with the fam. The Hakka beef is killer, its twice cooked, and the sauce is a perfect balance of sweet/spicy/tangy. In terms of their other dishes, we have yet to find one that disappointed us, the beef/broccoli, chili beef, orange chicken, sesame chicken, noodles, etc everything is served piping hot and quick! We normally order chicken fingers for the kids and a large order of egg drop soup. Most of the portions are big enough that either we split it or eat what we can and save the rest for lunch the next day. Service - they auto add an 15% gratuity to checks, due to patrons walking out without tipping the servers. Honestly though, most of the servers are not great. Most of the time we have no idea who is serving us and if they understand what we said. This review though is excluding the waitstaff, and focused solely on the food. The owner is wonderful, and is quick to address any issues that might arise. I was upset a few months ago, where our waitress didn't even provide us with water, and forgot our food. I talked to the owner and she brought out the food and took off the 15% auto grat, b/c the waiter wasn't doing anything (I did add some tip back, just b/c I felt bad). I've been to Mandarin Chinese Halal numerous times over the past year and have always been impressed. The owners are actually Chinese-Pakistani so there's somewhat of a Pakistani flavor to their food in that it's pretty spicy. The food is all halal as well. It's moderately priced and always fresh. My wife and I usually order the mongolian beef and chili chicken and both are very, very good. The fried rice and egg rolls are excellent as well. My only problem, and this is common among ethnic restaurants in the area, is that their soft drinks are only served in cans. Thus, if you want a refill, pony up $2 more and get another can. Small complaint, but still a pain for an otherwise enjoyable experience. They also have a special Ramadan iftari buffet going on for like $12 which is excellent. It's only on the weekends during Ramadan but I'd strongly recommend checking it out. It's by far the most fresh food I've ever seen in a Chinese buffet. They normally don't have a buffet. Finally, they have an excellent lunch special at a great price. For $6, you get an entree, fried rice and an egg roll or soda. The price and deal are pretty standard for Chinese restaurants but the food here is much better. read more
