Mama Lucia is my personal definition of a "problem"... because once you start going, you can't stop. The pizza is ridiculously good. The crust? Somehow both crispy and soft like it went to culinary school. The cheese actually tastes like cheese (rare these days), and the sauce is so good I literally order extra on the side just for dipping. Yes, I am that person--and I have zero regrets. And don't sleep on the pasta--it's just as solid. This place is not a one-hit wonder. Also, Anthony, the owner, might be the nicest human alive. He regularly gives me a free soda with my pizza, which feels like I've unlocked some kind of secret rewards program I never signed up for. I usually go to the East-West Highway location in Silver Spring because of work, but I also hit the Connecticut Avenue spot near my place in NW DC--and somehow they're BOTH consistently great. No off days, no drop in quality. Maybe it's because the owners are New Yorkers. Maybe it's magic. Classic place I grew up going to. I love the garlic bread they give you to start off complimentary it's a great start to the meal every time. I went with the chicken piccata this time, but their pizza is great hot as well. The piccata was good I had never had it from here before. The service was very good, as were consistently checked in on for water refills and that our meals lived up to the standard. The restaurant has a nice Italian feel as well, but not the same feel it did when I was younger which is what brings my ranking down. read more

The pizza is always my go to, but I noticed a dish I hadn't seen before and decided to try their spaghetti squash, which I topped with olive oil, garlic and grilled chicken. It wasn't very clear I had to take a table on my own as the hostess/server appeared to be on her meal break. I wasn't in a rush but maybe in those instances having a sign that directs customers to seat themselves would be helpful. This mama lucia location felt oddly like a parody of a fancy restaurant. Friendly wait staff, bread brought to the table, expansive menu, and drinks. But the waiter was comically aggressively nice and attentive to the point of annoyance, the bread was inedible being either too burnt or too soggy depending on which piece you picked, and the majority of the menu items were overpriced and not very good. The pizza pulls them out of disaster and into OK territory. Get the large since it's not that much more cost wise and you can always take the left overs home. My son and I split a large, ate half of it there and were stuffed, then I ate off the rest for a couple of days. Some good things that helped get us to 3 stars are that there is free parking, a rarity in silver spring, the pizza is good, and they are definitely trying very hard and you have to assume they'll find their stride since it seems they are willing to put in the effort. I know it seems like I give restaurant five s; I don't. I recognize and observe things a lot of other people don't. For instance, REAL PLATES and flatware, regardless what you order. I orders a SLICE of pizza, to stay. Most places would have given me paper plates and no flatware. I appreciate that. I've eaten their food several times. Never came in for a meal, but a company I worked with ordered food from here, during a training session I participated in. I remember the food being good, and everyone being satisfied with their meals. I've ordered slices of pizza from them several time, and have no complaints. My understanding is that they only do Pizza slices for lunch. Can't be beat for under $5.00. Ambiance is pretty basic, but clean, and accommodating. EXCELLENT!! I would highly suggest this place to visit & eat. Even my mother is a fan. Not only is the pizza good, but the pasta dishes, my mother said that she saw a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich & it looked delicious, the salads, & the mussels (scrumptious). The rest of the staff seemed friendly, but our waitress was extremely unprofessional. She pulled the menus out from under our plates, causing my utensils to fall, and didn't even apologize. We arrived around 8pm--an hour before closing--and only ordered one large pizza. Yet before 8:30pm, the staff started cleaning the main dining area, putting chairs on tables, and even moving booths and furniture around while we were still eating. The waitress also came over and took our parmesan cheese to put it away without asking if we were finished with it. We clearly weren't. The food itself was great, but the dine-in experience was not. I don't recommend eating in here; I'll only be ordering takeout from now on. They really need to hire better wait staff. read more

I enjoyed eating at Mamma Lucia in Silver Spring! I went with a few friends for lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Luis was our waiter and he was awesome and very friendly. I ordered the chicken parmigiana, and it was huge!! The portion size was amazing, and I definitely had to take a to go box to eat it for two more meals at home. My friends got the carbonara and a pizza with alfredo sauce. The ambiance was nice and casual, nothing too fancy. I thought it was a little pricey for the casual atmosphere, but I didn't mind it too much because I enjoyed the food, and the service was great. I do recommend you give it a try if you're ever in the Silver Spring area and want to sit down at a casual Italian restaurant to have some pasta or pizza. I will probably be back. I had a great experience at this tasty Silver Spring restaurant! We began our meal with garlic bread, which was the perfect free starter--amazingly grilled and flavorful. We then had a pizza appetizer (the de bruno), which was so tasty! I loved the basil on top. After some very serviceable Caesar salads, we had chicken piccata and chicken Marsala. The chicken was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful. I wish the spaghetti had been equally flavorful, but it was still very tasty. We could have gone for gelato as well, but we were so full! Definitely next time. Our service was very efficient, and the restaurant was not too crowded at 1pm on a Saturday. My friend and I were seated immediately on a busy Sunday night. The service was excellent and we were quietly left to chat after meal, as the table did not need to be turned. The food was delicious and portion sizes were ample. I ordered stuffed shells from the Specials Menu which came with a generous salad of romaine, tomatoes, cucumber and olives. The garlic bread accompanying the meal was a special treat as it was presented with a small dish of melted butter/crushed garlic. The shells (4) were perfectly cooked in a light sauce of ground veal and plenty of cheese. The location is a small venue with high energy. The good news is that this one is pretty good. Winners from their pizza and anything in the vodka sauce (especially the salmon if it's on the special board). I'd say there was at least 3 tablespoons of mayo on the smallish sub and the most flavorless cold cuts I've ever had. They have delicious pizza plus pasta dishes !!!! My go to is the Capellini Adriatico w/ shrimp , scallops etc! My only issue w/ the dish was there wasn't enough sauce! It's more expensive for the dinner portion! Just ask for extra sauce and enjoy ! I have been to Mamma Lucia several times and have always enjoyed the food. The pizza and pasta are always great. They have a good wine selection too but I usually don't have the wine. There are specials certain nights of the week such as half off pizza and half off pasta. They also serve gelato but I have always been too full. The portions are also generous. I last ordered from here for a small New Years Eve from DoorDash for our party. We got half artichoke and half cheese large pizza (meant to order half anchovies but accidentally picked artichokes), penne marinara, and bruschetta. The portions were decent and food delicious. but the bruschetta was small for the over ten bucks charged. Overall this place is a 4, it's not the very best or most affordable Italian food but quite good and reasonably priced. We look forward to coming back both in person and ordering take out or delivery for future occasions. read more

My roommate and I got an extra large pepperoni pizza. For Silver Spring, I would say this pizza was decent. Probably some of the better pizza I've had here. The crust wasn't too doughy, but I felt like there wasn't enough sauce. I loved that they have the little cup pepperoni, though I wish they had put even more on. Online ordering was easy enough. Pricing wasn't too bad, but it could've been cheaper. This pizza was $25. It was only a 20 minute wait for pickup. There's plenty of parking since it's in the same parking lot as Giant and CVS. I came by to pick up some dinner after grocery shopping. The staff was very nice and helpful. I ordered the lasagna with a Greek salad. The lasagna had no sauce in it but it came with sauce on the bottom of the to-go plate. It was so dry I'm still getting flashbacks of the horrible bites I took. I hadn't even eaten all day but I would not have been able to eat this food if someone paid me. I would rather just not eat. All I could think about was how I could have eaten any where else and been happier. This is the worst lasagna I have ever eaten. The recipe should change or just remove it from the menu completely. The lasagna was so bad I didn't even want to eat the tiramisu I bought to eat for dessert. But later I had some of it and the tiramisu was okay. read more
