I LOVE Mama's Kitchen! :D The hubs and I, after a not-so-good dinner, wanted to re-treat our bellies to better food. I've been wanting to check out Mama's Kitchen for a while, and since it was not too far as where we were, we headed on right over :P Mama's, as you might have guessed, is owned by Mama; she's Turkish, and she has some cred in terms of owning some restaurants and a chain that started out in NOLA. This little eatery offers pizzas (even pizza by-the-slice), sandwiches, calzones, lasagna, wings, BBQ (such as pulled pork, beef brisket, and ribs), salads, sides (such as baked beans, coleslaw, breadsticks, mozzarella sticks, etc.), and desserts. I had the Pepperoni Slice (which was NY style, monstrously big, and it was YUMMY - one of the best NY-style pizza I've had in a while! Plenty of pepperoni and cheese, this came out piping hot, and there are Parm cheese and chili flakes available to jazz it up); a Pulled Pork Sandwich (this came in a homemade bread (Turkish?), with saucy BBQ-y pulled pork, that I thought was pretty good); and, BBQ bone-in wings (these were cooked perfectly and sauced up wonderfully; no need for sauce, as these were yummy on its own!). I definitely want to try their calzones, the lasagna, and their specialty pizzas the next time! I will also be calling ahead with dine-in/carry-out orders, as the food is made to order, so you might be waiting for quite some time. There are about 5 tables if you wanted to dine-in, and I saw many who were also picking up for carry-outs. Just keep in mind that there's no AC, but a fan, so it does tend to get warm in there pretty quick! I love the fact that this place is opened a little later, and there's plenty of parking spots available on/off the street. Great addition to the neighborhood. For those of us that remember the gyro place that used to be located at 13th and Good Hope, this pizza shop gives you the same feel. Family owned, ethnic pizza. There's a table or two to dine in, but mainly it's a carry out. I like having this option that always seems open and accessible. One star is taken off because any time I go, it's hot in there! The friendly staff and warm hearts keep the place even warmer :) .. oh and the pizza is pretty good, lol. Definitely cures a pizza fix, but isn't gourmet, nor is it frozen standard. read more

Look, Mama's is more than a local pizza joint, it's an institution. It is seriously an integral part of Ward 8. They were robbed not to long ago and the community banned together and raised money for a security system. They employ the homeless. They are a safe space for many. They are awesome and for that they get "ALL THE STARS!" LOL As for the what you really want to know about... The Food: I always go for the "Big Slice". I have YET to have one anywhere that is amazing so their slice is about the same as everywhere else, which is average. Now when you get into the food, food, like brisket or pulled pork sandwiches, ribs, the Calzone or the lemon pepper wings they are working with 4 to 5 stars. It's good. Really good. Customer Service: They treat everyone like fam (when you go in). Just go in...lol. Follow that advice and you will be alright. Order over the phone for for delivery at your own risk. Delivery: Good luck. You just never know what is going to happen. Your best best is go pick it up yourself as I mentioned. It's Ward 8. Streets being blocked off suddenly by police tape are real delivery hazards. One time I waited over 2 hours for my food before I found out it was never coming.Trying to get to the bottom of where my food was, was INSANE. The poor driver got caught up in a shooting incident. He came out unhurt but delivery ceased for the evening. For some reason it took several phone calls and 2 hours later for that to be properly communicated. But, I have been there twice in 48 hrs. I just bought a house in Anacostia so was so excited that Mama's Kitchen is the first local business I could patronize. I bought lunch for myself and my contractors. I got a grilled chicken sub with french fries for one and beef lasagna for the other. I ordered a garlic cheese bread for myself. I had a couple of the french fries which were only warm (not hot) and had burnt edges. My garlic cheese bread was okay, but the cheese was only in the middle (not to the sides as I would've preferred) and there were only two knots of garlic on the entire dish. The dipping sauce was good though. Oh, and the wait for take out was over 30 minutes which I had a bit of a heads up about since the owner told me that lasagna took a while. I will give them another try as they are not that far from my new place. read more

This place has PISS POOR customer service. I ordered a pizza via uber eats at 5:30pm and my pizza still hadn't arrived by 7pm. I called and asked them if my pizza was still there and the person I spoke with acted as if she didnt know. I was put on hold and when she came back to the phone, I heard someone in the background with the nastiest attitude saying that I needed to contact Uber eats and saying some other rude things that I couldnt quite make out. I was then put on hold again and when she came back, she explains to me that uber had just picked up my pizza. I then asked to speak to the manager and I was told that the managers were busy. I asked the person whom I was speaking with her name and this fool said her name was "O". Im so done with Mama's Kitchen. I used to order pizza from there for my son once a week. Managers, if you are reading this, please provide better customer service training to your staff. **FYI** MAMA's Has moved a couple of blocks down the street! They are now on the corner of MLK and V streets! So a better location and the food is GREAT! This was my first time trying it because I noticed a new spot that opened up on the corner. That day we ordered a spinach sandwich, pulled pork sandwich and a slice of pizza. The ingredients were FRESH! The bread they used for the Spinach sandwich was freshly baked, crispy and had a garlic spread throughout! The spinach and tomatoes was fresh along with the feta cheese and mozzarella! The pizza was made with quality ingredients and the pull pork was a nice sized serving, cooked and seasoned to perfection, topped with their fresh cole slaw. The next day we had friends come over and went to Mama's again! this time we ordered the rib dinner and BBQ wings. I cannot believe how good this food is! the quality is so on point! These ribs fed 3 people, they were meaty flavorful and smokey!. it came with delicious bake beans and cole slaw. The chicken wings were cooked perfectly and seasoned well. I would give them 5 stars but the service is a tad bit slow, but considering the time it takes to make such good food it is really worth the wait! just take that into consideration. I ordered a lasagna from this place when I went I got home to open it it's was so much sauce all over the lid all through the lasnaga only 2 lasnagna shells ,no ricotta sauce, the spinach wasn't cooked which left it soggy all at the bottom, the top of the cheese was burnt, I had hair in my food,not to mention the rude service. The cashier over charged my card twice for $17.15 which was over charge of the menu price when I asked her about the charges she shrugged her shoulders like she didn't know why, then she said the terminal charges extra for using the card. Then today I called to ask for Momma she was very very rude over talking me when I asked her of I can bring it back she said no that's how they make it, then she proceeded to day next time don't order lasnaga she also said take a plate and scrape the sauce off. I had the mozzarella sticks and a grilled chicken sandwich. The mozzarella sticks were dry and only came with 5 or 6. White Castle's mozzarella sticks, Red Lobster's mozzarella sticks, you name a place they're better than Mama'a Kitchen. What impressed me was the grilled chicken sandwich. The sandwich looked great, pretty much like any other sandwich. I asked for BBQ sauce instead of mustard, but I honestly cannot tell if they honored my request. The sauce that was on my sandwich appeared goldish brown, but it did not taste like mustard. The sauce made the sandwich way more enjoyable, it had a taste that was faint, but you can tell it was there. I'm very interested in learning more about what the sauce was. I highly recommend it on your sandwich. The pizza looked great, a shipmate of mine got pizza and enjoyed it. I place my order ahead of time so I have time for it to be delivered & way & not miss my break , today the food took over an hour the store was called 2 times each time I was told the food was on the way (literally down the street) still no food finally it's delivered and it's from the man who was lying on the phone that the lady was on the way. I'd passed by Mama's Kitchen a few times since it opened, but didn't know it was actually open, until after reading about it in an article on "food deserts" in Anacostia. So yesterday, after a loooong day of moving, I decided to check it out (since it's only two blocks away from my new house!). There's nothing really special about the decor. It looks like a typical carryout spot--but WITHOUT the bulletproof sheeting that usually separates customer from owner at most eateries in Anacostia. That's HUGE. They also have tables where you can sit down and eat, so it's not a "order, pay, and get out" place. It invites you to stay and eat. Moosa (I'm not sure if I'm spelling the name right) took our order. He was super friendly and welcoming. He gave the order to Mama, who was busy in the back kitchen preparing other customers' food. I ordered a large spinch/feta pizza and french fries. As we were waiting for the food, I noticed fresh hamburger patties in a container on the griddle counter. Fresh, as in the kind you make at home, from real ground beef, not chopped/formed/frozen/shipped from a mega factory. I was immediately impressed. Other customers came in and ordered sandwiches--grilled chicken, steak and cheese--and everything was put on fresh, homemade bread!! And all of this for dirt cheap prices (if you were to get the same thing on the other side of the Anacostia River, you'd easily pay twice the price). When our pizza came out, it looked yummy. Fresh spinach leaves, fresh tomato slices, grilled onions, and crumbled feta. I asked them to put tomato sauce on it, too (the pizza normally comes with a garlic sauce). I have to say, with no exaggeration, that was some of the BEST PIZZA I've ever eaten. The sauce was so flavorful. The crust was perfect. The combination of flavors of toppings was on point. It was delicious. Moosa was obviously proud of their product, as he seemed to be waiting for us to take the first bite, before asking with a smile, "So how do you like it?" Mama's Kitchen is a gem. It was only my first time there, but I look forward to many returns. I can't wait for their drink selection and menu offerings to expand. And I hope to see it thrive. Whoa... Historic Anacostia's got a THIRD sit-down dining option! Sure, it ain't much to look at, but it's progress, and the food's pretty decent. Essentially a modified take-out with the bullet-proof glass removed and a few small tables up front, you order at the counter and eat in or take out as you wish. It's Italian themed, down to the picture of the Grand Canal on the wall and the check table cloths, and they do serve pizza, calzones and lasagna, but the owners are in fact Turkish. They do their own baking on the premises, and while their Turkish-style bread may not be the traditional hoagie roll, it does make a damn fine vehicle for the excellent cheesesteak. At $5.99, it's not cheap, but it is very substantial. Mama must treat her customers right, because while I was waiting for said cheesesteak, two customers came in and wanted their meals prepared by Mama, no one else. But sorry, no liquor license, so you won't be enjoying a nice Chianti with that chicken parm! read more

I have a love-hate relationship with Mamas'--I'm a pretty loyal customer because the pizza is really good and its prices are on point, but sometimes its unprofessional delivery drivers and employees really really piss me off. I consistently order the pizza and wings and am kind of scared to order the BBQ items. Both the pizza and wings are delicious, and they have really good pickup specials on pizzas. The only other options I know of east of the river for pizza delivery are dominoes (meh), pizza hut (hate) and Azitouna, which you can read about in another review I just wrote. The motto for this business is "Cooked With Love". That's nice... sounds like... my Mama's kitchen! They offer standard pizzeria fare - pizzas, calzones, Americanized Italian-esque/Mediterranean-lite sandwiches, etc. The guy who took my order (possibly the owner) was really, really nice. If customer service is any indication of this business' future, then they have a bright one ahead. I ordered a half pepperoni & BBQ chicken pizza, which was okay - the crust was thin enough for my liking. I probably should have ordered extra cheese/sauce, but I was starving & it did the job. I also ordered their wings (BBQ), which I really liked. They were larger, and not quite seasoned; but, still had enough flavor (as if they were grilled) to pull off the sauce they were doused in. Since they were out of both mozzarella sticks & cheesecake, I initially ordered bread-sticks.... but then decided to taste their cheese fries. Their cheese fries were good & actually had real pieces of bacon & not imitation bits, as I was expecting. Upon delivery, the same gentleman that had taken my order showed up with the bread-sticks, as well, which he'd thrown in for free. That was a nice, sincere gesture; although, I was not one to complain about what they didn't have, because they just opened for business a couple of weeks ago. My first and Only visit to MaMa's will be a memorable one, for me not to patronize here again. I was going to give 2 1/2 stars, but... The first thing that I noticed, was on my pizza slice was a long grey hair (not cool at all), hairnets are a definite must in a food establishment!!! For $10 there should be more meat on the Italian sub, all you taste is Banana peppers and plenty of them ; I think I'll pass on another visit, I have definitely had a better Italian Carryout experience for spending $25 read more
