The hummus is gritty, the vegetables were not fresh, the falafel was over fried, the lamb had an indescribable horrible taste, the chicken was doused with way too much lemon juice. So excited to finally have tried Maman Joon today! I shared the family platter with my partner- and we both agreed everything was amazing. We were really pleased with the taste, quality, and amount of food we received. The service was also quick, and everyone very friendly. It said the family platter feeds 3-4, and I would say that is accurate. We ate really well tonight and have plenty for round two tomorrow. We ordered: skewers of beef skoobideh, lamb chenjeh, chicken breast; hummus; pita; beets; cannelini bean salad; borani; pita; and, basmati rice. My favorite items were the beef skoobideh, borani, and basmati rice (but I enjoyed everything). My boyfriend said his favorite item was the lamb- it had great flavor. But he too inhaled everything on his plate. We can't wait to return to try more items! Sorry I didn't take pictures... my phone had died and we were hungry. read more

We stopped for dinner this weekend before seeing a movie. I was underwhelmed. Nice idea to try to adapt Persian food to the fast-casual concept, but the food we ordered was not so hot compared to the Persian food we have eaten elsewhere. My wife got the ratatouille, which had no eggplant that we could tell and hardly any red bell peppers -- all zucchini and summer squash. Spicy koobideh was an interesting idea, but the chicken for the koobideh itself looked to have been pureed instead of ground -- texture not great. I did like the fact that the bread we got with the must o mooseer was hot, and both the must and the yogurt sauce that came with the koobideh were tasty, More than enough rice to eat with the meal so we had leftovers to bring home for lunch the following day. I was excited to see Maman Joon take over the former Beefsteak store front. It is a welcome and unique addition to the Tenleytown dining scene. Don't let the fast casual set up fool you - it is seriously good food that has been prepared with care. We ordered the Beef Chenjeh Kabob, Vegetarian Fesenjan, Mediterranean Platter, and a side of Vegan Okra Stew. As soon as I saw the golden crust of the tahdig I knew we were in for a treat. I was also thrilled to see the thoughtfully crafted vegetarian menu. Everything was fresh and flavorful, the dishes were all distinct. Even my picky toddler cleaned the plate! When I ordered a side of Must o Khiar over the phone, the manager nicely told me it would be included with our entrees. He then remembered me when I came in and gave me a little extra! I wanted something small, so I ordered kashk e bademjon. It was horrible, tasted old, and it was out of the freezer. They warmed it up a little, super watery, and had no taste. I don't look for excuses to get free food, of course. I ordered just a skewer of kabob with Nan because I was not able to eat that kashk e badamjon. After I paid for my 2nd order I told them my order was horrible; the person I was talking to told me, "Well, that's the way we make it." I'm very disappointed with his attitude and the food. That's not the way it should be tested. It was not my first time eating that food, but it was my first and last time eating in this restaurant for sure. Located in a cute and quiet area of tenleytown and metro friendly. I was impressed by the reviews but disappointed by my experience. The dish is 80% rice and it's not an extreme amount of flavor to make you go crazy. Waste of $25. After a while, the rice became pretty dry, except for the patches where they laid the protein. The beef was very dry. I've known beef of this sort to be that way which is why I orginally wanted the #2 combo of rice, chicken, and lamb, but for whatever reason they don't offer it anymore unless for a ridiculous price. The cashier and server Benjamin was a little rude when explaining this to me. The yogurt was nasty--ask for the cilantro sauce. That was the only saving grace for the meal, along with being hungry. read more

Maman Joon immediately caught us off-guard with possibly the warmest welcome and best service we've ever seen from a Persian Restaraunt. Admittedly, with the luxury of an amazing (and cute to boot!) Persian chef at home, I'm picky with Persian. Nearly all of our visits to Persian Restaurants (even those known as the best in the US/Canada) result in exit conversations to the effect of "XYZ and ABC were fantastic, but you just can't compete with home". Where do I start? First, I can't believe I haven't ventured out here previously. I decided to grab a bite here after seeing such high reviews. I can counter that every review is correct. The food is good and fresh. I ordered the combo 4, their hummus, and two sides of their spicy cilantro sauce. The hummus was the best I've had in the DMV so far. It was so fresh and the flavor was amazing, I'm guessing from the sesame paste in it! The combo 4 came with a grilled tomato, lamb kebob, and beef koobideh kabob, and rice. The portion was huge! I couldn't believe how much food was given to us. Everything was amazing the food was seasoned perfectly. It reminded me of the Persian food I used to get when I was younger in Queens. We really enjoyed our stop at Maman Joon while walking around the Tenleytown area. Persian food is one of my favorite cuisines, and they did not disappoint. The vibe may be fast-casual but you can tell they take pride in taking the time and care to make sure everything tastes good. The time from ordering to eating was maybe 5-10 minutes. I got one of the beef/chicken combos and my wife got the salmon. The beef was some of the best meat I have had anywhere in DC--the seasoning was amazing. I also liked that they had Persian drinks available, including dough, a somewhat sour, refreshing yogurt drink. We ate on their nice front patio, but the inside is very fun and welcoming too. The staff were also very friendly and helpful with menu questions. Especially in an area awash in generic fast-casual options, Maman Joon really shines as a unique and quality destination. read more

We were at Maman joon Tyson's the other day. The food was good, but I did not appreciate what they did when I paid the bill. They are adding 6% service & packaging charge on top the total bill plus the credit card charge displays adding tip. This is a self service place where you order yourself, pickup the food yourself and clean the table yourself. So not sure what the service charge is for. My understanding is that the restaurant should have a large sign displaying that additional charge per law for the consumer, but this restaurant has an extremely tiny note at the bottom of their menu display, which is not noticeable, unless someone points it out. If they need to adjust for the rising price of ingredients, then add the 6% to the price of your meals, so consumers can see what the real price is. Don't try to hide it! We tried Maman Joon today. We have been waiting for it to open since the sign went up. What a treat! This Persian restaurant is the real thing. They have the usual Kabobs but better than most I have tasted. Additionally, they have many Persian dishes. They are proud of the fact that most everything is made in house. The owners couldn't have been nicer, friendlier, and more attentive. They let us try several things in addition to what we had ordered and refused to let us pay. The kubideh kabob was flavorful and juicy. Not dried out like a popular Kabob place. I loved their Gormeh Sabzi ( a Persian stew) made with beef and lots of herbs. The entrees come with a generous portion of rice or salad or both and bread. They will be adding to the menu as they move forward. We will definitely make this one of our regulars! read more

As we were walking into Angelico's on Sunday my wife and our best friend who attended American University with me, I saw this new Persian place and I asked if we could try it out. We ordered lamb, chicken, and beef combos (I believe Combo 2 and Supreme 2). The portions are very generous and the rice was delicious and plentiful. They gave us pita on the side as well. The mint yogurt drink and yogurt soda were great too. My only complaint is it took them a little while to get our order ready, but it was worth it and understandable given it was busy for AU graduation and Mother's Day. read more

Maman Joon Tenleytown has the best hummus I've ever tasted from anywhere in the world. Not just DC. A high grade olive oil must be used to give it that distinct flavor. The consistency is so smooth and the garbanza beans (I learned, because I asked) are soaked and cooked in-house rather than being procured as a paste from a restaurant supplier. Persian (Iranian) cuisine is known for its crispy rice (tadig). You have to pay careful attention to the menu because you will find hidden gems there. They do offer tadig!!!! There are also stews (hard to identify on the menu and should be their own category). So much here than just kabobs! It took me several visits to figure this out. Fesenjan (chicken stew with pomegranate walnut sauce), Okra Eggplant stew, and beef stew etc! Plus, many ingredients sourced from Iran like special limes. This looks like fast food (and its location gives that impression) but it is not. It is all slowly, carefully. and lovingly simmered. If it were somewhere else and had white linen tablecloths Maman Joon would be considered fine dining. read more

The food and price are absolutely 5 star worthy. We got the chicken kabob sandwich, the falafel, and hummus. Everything was delicious - the falafel was some of the best I've ever had, and there's something special about the hummus (possibly the sesame paste?) Two sandwiches and two appetisers (plus bread and tzatziki-ish sauce) came to about 35$ with tip - super reasonable, especially because it left us both with lunch for the next day. Definitely looking forward to getting food here again. So this would've been an easy 5-star review otherwise, but then comes the dishonest management and/or false advertising. Apparently, the 15% Yelp discount is "a rumour" despite this page being verified as owned (we checked this with the girl at the counter, who told us about the "rumour".) I ordered their fesanjan to go. For those who don't know what this is, it is chicken with pomegranate sauce, however what you get is pomegranate sauce with chicken. In other words a few decorative pieces of chicken hidden in a lake of sauce. The sauce fortunately is tasty, hence the three stars) but for the $17 (19.72 with tax and small to go tip) you expect to get a few token pieces of chicken, especially when you can get half a chicken and two sides next door for $2 less. On the bright side it reminded me of that 80s commercial "where's the beef" as I searched for the chicken within the sauce. read more

Maman Joon did not disappoint. I ordered a grilled lamb wrap and side salad to go. While waiting on my order, the owner offered me a generous sample of Ghormeh Sabzi and rice. The dish was mouthwatering, seasoned to perfection, and the rice was divine. Everything = DELICIOUS! Do not let the storefront fool you; this is NOT Persian fast food. With the first bite, you know you're tasting a grandma's recipes and, more importantly, a celebration of the flavors of home. The Maman Joon staff is warm and hospitable. Their indoor and outdoor spaces are kept very clean and organized. The best part is their well-priced and interesting menu offerings. I can't wait to go back. Did I mention the hospitality of the owner and staff?! A young couple (with small kids) dining next to me in the outdoor seating area also ordered two large shopping bags full of food to-go. My husband and I came here the other day since it's a newer addition to the neighborhood. I ordered the Combo 1 which came with check breast kabob and ground beef koobideh kabob. I usually stick with chicken but I really liked like the beef koobideh especially since it had onions mixed it. Both meats were moist and very flavorful. The portion was enough for 2 1/2 meals for me. I will definitely be coming back because their menu of huge and I'm excited to keep trying their food. read more
