A decent little place in the western suburbs. 5 of my 6 soup dumplings burst in the steamer, probably because they don't use cabbage leaves as a base and the skin stuck to the paper. Tasted just fine, but the joy of eating them was somewhat diminished. The Sichuan Spicy Beef Noodles was a little on the salty side, but the heat was just right. We haven't been in this shopping center since the Genuardi's closed awhile back, but happened to pass by and saw the sign for Mama Wong. We were so pleasantly surprised at how authentic and delicious the food was! We had the soup dumplings, Dan Dan noodles and Shanghai spare ribs and everything was so good! When my parents and in-laws come to visit they are always complaining about how we have no good Chinese food around us. They will be so pleased the next time they come! I really don't understand all the positive hype about this restaurant. Started with their scallion pancake appetizer. Flat and greasy! I ordered the griddle chicken with mushrooms and bamboo shoot, medium spicy, as I do in other restaurants. My food arrived drowned in hot sauce. My mouth was on fire after just the second bite. Couldn't eat it. A plus mark for our waiter. He was polite and offered to have the dish remade or even to go, though in a condescending tone as if this was the first time we had eaten Asian fusion food. I declined as my wife was half finished with her entree which she seemed to enjoy. It was simply prepared chicken and vegetable with sauce on the side (dietary restriction). Frankly, I had lost my appetite. They made no attempt to apologize, though they did take $3 off our bill. Not wise customer service. After we left, my wife admitted that her entree wasn't particularly good. We won't be back. read more

The is hands down the best Chinese restaurant outside of Chinatown. Maybe even including in Chinatown! The soup dumplings are certainly the best I have ever had. And having a chef from the Szechuan province of China the layering of flavors in their spicing is without peer. I am still licking my fingers from the dry pepper wings! Love their snow pea pods with garlic. And Love their lobster in ginger scallion sauce. They offer a sampler table banquet by reservation that takes you through the "tour of China" which introduced me to amazing dishes I haven't tried. And I have tried a lot. My highest recommendation. Went with a co-worker for lunch and had a very nice lunch. My entree was very good. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination but seemed to authentic Chinese to me except for the egg roll. That seemed pre-made and not that flavorful. Service was very good and the re-design of the restaurant from the previous occupant was well done. There were only 2 or 3 tables there so I assume the word has not gotten out yet. Like all new restaurants, there are growing pains. I am sure these minor things will be corrected. I got take-out and while the staff was very nice, they got my order wrong. I ordered pan fried dumplings and an egg roll with my lunch. I received wonton soup and a spring roll. The wonton were good, but the broth had no flavor at all. The fried rice was terrible. It was white rice with a few pieces of egg and carrots. Yes, just white rice. On April 11 we celebrated or tried to celebrate our Anniversary at Mama Wongs. I reserved a spot for 6 pm not sure how busy they get. Our waitress who was pleasant in the beginning seemed to forget about us once the order was placed. She remembered everyone or so it seems that came in the door with a cheery smile, laughter and long conversation... I got the Shanghai Won Ton-it was ok I have had better. My husband got the West Lake Beef Soup-not great. We waited for bowls for 10-15 minutes after I got up to remind the waitress we needed bowls for the West Lake Beef Soup. I asked for water and that took another 10 minutes. Finally our Shrimp Lo Mein and Stir fry Rice Noodles/Beef came and they were decent. We asked for Oolong Tea and she said they had none and said Jasmine or Green Tea. We got JASMINE GREEN TEA-I hate Jasmine and told her at the time of the order. We wanted Oolong that was listed on the menu and they had none. We asked for PLAIN GREEN TEA and got the Jasmine Green Tea and that was not how she explained it. At no time did she return to our table to see if we liked our food. I literally got up 3 times to get her attention. At the end I gave her a $5 coupon not knowing our total, she said we had not bought the $50 to get $5 off. I never got my bill. I had to wait again as she left and another astute waitress asked what was wrong and I told her we are waiting for our bill even after she told me our bill was not enough for the coupon she disappeared again. Funny our waitress said we could use the coupon when we return. Funny because we have no plan to return. I waited another 10 minutes for a container for my leftover Shrimp Lo Mein. Then we waited again for her to pack my husbands, no way was she packing my leftovers. The other waitress and waiter seemed to get customers in and out in a timely fashion and we sat there and waited and waited and waited. I had to ask her to remove our used dishes. She said they were short waitresses/waiters but whether that was true or not the other waiters /waitresses were prompt and courteous as patrons who came after us left before we did. We had to wait again for a bag to put our leftovers in and again the astute waitress bought us a bag as OUR waitress was no where to be seen. She truly had no clue how awful her lack of service was as she laughed, hugged and had long conversations with other patrons. I came from California and I was so fortunate to had dinner with my friends at this excellent restaurant. The several dishes we ordered were the ones of the best in Chinese restaurants I have ever visited in the past 30 years. Your should definitely try out yourself when you are in this area! It is my first time to eat in Mama Wong and I really like it. I like the clean environment and the dishes we selected. They are authentic Chinese dish taste with high quality. I really like the west lake beef soup, chicken w/hot dried paper, spicy dry hot pot, Chengdu style fish with pickled vegetable garnish.
