Pretty pricey pho and the meatball was very small and it wasn't even a full sized meatball. I got the mama pho at $23. The brisket was kind of thick and dry. I like the ribeye though. That was the most tender meat out of all the meats in the bowl. Noodles were thin and slippery and nice to eat. They have a lot of soup and it went well with the scallions and cilantro. The bean sprouts were the best. They tasted so crunchy and nice in my mouth! I was also confused with my friends when we arrived here because I didn't know it was called Bedford Gardens that was working with Mama Pho until I went inside and the waiter said it is a Japanese and Vietnamese fusion. This place consists of five other restaurants besides Mama Pho, where one can enjoy different cuisines at once. When I entered, there was a party of two enjoying their banh mi sandwiches and sushi. In the front, I can order from the kiosk which I have to pay with credit or debit card. I chose to order at a server where I can pay with cash. The service here was fast. I was actually pleasantly surprised by this pho restaurant right in the middle of Bedford Ave. They have a simple pho, vermicelli, and banh mi menu. Prices have gone up from $10 to $12, but what can you do.. it's Williamsburg! I got the rib eye and beef ball pho. It came out nicely hot with alll the fix ins (basil, jalapeno, bean sprouts), which I thought was a little unusual. At every other pho place, they always put those on the side. So if you don't want it served to you like that, make sure you specify. I would've preferred on the side because the bean sprouts got soggy and I couldn't tell them apart from the noodles later on. The bar is low when it comes to getting your order notes correctly when getting delivery but mama pho always meets and exceeds my expectations. I'm one that likes a lot of sprouts, onion, herbs, and plenty of limes in the broth and for dipping the protein in. I don't even like hoisin or hot sauce in my broth so these things are a necessity for me to satisfy my pho fix. Mama...you were my first...and my last (in Williamsburg that is)....hahaha waxing poetic here because after years of trying other pho places in the neighborhood, Mama has always been by far...by FAR...the most authentic in the Williamsburg/GreenPoint areas. Mama Pho seems to represent a guided experience to pho; the restaurant chooses to include some things in its dishes that would be side- or optional items at other establishments, with mixed success. What We've Had: 1. Rib-Eye and Beef Ball Pho, with Bone Marrow and Beef Shin: - Positives: The pho broth was among the best we've had, and the noodles were pleasantly springy and chewy. The bone marrow option seemed to augment the broth in an authentic, ungimmicky way -- Mama Pho put the bone marrow right into the soup. (Other restaurants present a huge bone on the soup; good for visual effect, but in practice a cumbersome decoration that gets in the way of eating). - Notes: Mama Pho did include typical condiments such as a wedge of lime, cilantro, jalapeno pepper and basil leaves in the soup, and not on the side as in other restaurants, but perhaps this aided in the deliciousness of the pho broth. The beef shin was tough and didn't match to the dish. I would have preferred additional traditional cuts of meat instead of sliced beef balls. 2. Lemongrass Chicken Banh Mi: OK, but the inclusion of liver pâté may not be for everyone. I would have preferred my sandwich without it. 3. First time ordering take-out from this location. I ordered the beef pho and the pork dumplings. My total came to approximately $19. First of all, to charge approximately $5 for two dumplings is a little ridiculous. They tasted good, but it is hard to justify such a high price for only two, small dumplings. Regarding the pho, it tasted decent. The broth could have had more flavor, but overall it was not bad. I do have a few complaints, however. First, no sauces were provided with the pho. It is standard to at least have some type of hot sauce and hoisin sauce, but both were absent. Second, the meat should have been placed in a separate container, as it was raw and therefor stained some of the noodles with blood. I was not overly concerned with this, as I am no stranger to pho, but I can see how this would cause concern for many people. As this was a delivery order, I believe it was fair of me to expect better. We dared the Lemongrass Banh Mi to a bout with our bellies and waited for our order. You guys know I love being inquisitive, so I conversed with the gentleman who took our order and he informed me they had been there for quite some time. He was pleasant and we continued to chat as the sandwiches were being prepared. Wait wasn't too long but not surprising since there was only two other people who came through for orders and one couple dining in on this particular Friday night. Hmmm not busy at all. A solid 4 here. I was in Williamsburg trying out some traditional Mediterranean ice cream. And yes, it was cold. But it's never too cold for ice cream. In any case, I was already full from my treat, but knew that I wasn't truly full. So I trekked down to North 7. And yelped my way to this tiny spot. And it is tiny. But what it lacks in size, it makes up for in flavor. I had the Rib Eye and Beef Meatball Pho. I like the heads up that was mentioned on the menu: the rib eye is raw and literally cooks in the broth. And I witnessed this myself. I was captivated. The rib eye was plentiful and absolutely delicious. Half a star demotion for the beef meatball. It tastes too... fresh for me? I don't know. It didn't taste like it had been well cooked through. But that may just be me. I slurped up that broth though. I could have used a dash more of salt. But again, that's just the future hypertensive in me. The other half star demotion is the fact that when I kept calling for the check, my waitress remained on her phone, even though I was one of maybe 4 people dining in. Overpriced pho restaurant with mediocre food. Their summer rolls are $8 bucks and most of their pho bowls are more than $16 except for one or two very basic options. My friends and I got Papa Pho with extra noodles $21) to share as we were not that hungry. The pho was alright and they didn't even give us basil or bean sprouts to put in our pho. The 'fall of the bone meat' in the soup was not not bad on its own but wasn't sure if I liked it in my pho. I also got Taro bubble tea ($5.17) and it was the WORST boba I've ever had in my life. The bubbles were mushy and just broke apart, probably because they were not fresh. The taro milk tea was watery and way too sweet that it gave me overwhelmingly cheap flavor. Don't ever get their boba because it's waste of money. The only good thing about this place is that it opens til late, around 3am ish, so it's a good spot for drunchies after a night out especially it's nearby many bars in Williamsburg. Ph is maybe the most recognizable Vietnamese dish imo. That distinct broth flavored with star anise and cinnamon is undeniable. And it's a simple yet effective gauge on the quality of a Vietnamese restaurant. Mama pho is, in all essence, strictly a ph shop with some appetizers to complement it. My first time at Vietnamese restaurant usually consist of the basics, so I got the đc bit (also known as ph #1). It usually has raw sliced beef that cooks in the broth when they serve it and tripe for that chewy texture, and here they give you meatbals (bò viên). Ph rubrics scoring (1-5): Noodles - 5 - the noodles were loose and not clumped together. When I grabbed some with my chopstick, it came up like curtains, meaning they refreshed the noodles just before serving. Broth - 5 - unlike chicken broth, beef broth for this should be clear with a slight dark tint. There are no traces of fat and oil bubbles and all the scum from the bones have been strained out. The taste of the star anise is distinct and the overall flavor is full (not watered down). Meats - 5 - the rib eye was fresh and had a good pink to it bc of the steam of the broth. The meatballs were al dente and warm on the inside. Condiments - 2 - It's common practice to supplement your soup with veggies to taste yourself, but not here. They didn't give us a plate of veggies to complement our soup, instead rationing bean sprouts and lime in our bowl. I personally add extra peppers and lots of bean sprouts. Its a huge nono in my eyes for places to charge extra for this. TOTAL: 17 out of 20 15 is my threshold for a revisit so thumbs up for me here. I use a rubrics standard in my workplace to give a granular grading system and to not be deterred because of 1 thing, like the condiments here. read more

Space is brand spanking new and looks great on the inside. There's also a lot more seating space than it seems like from the street as they have a back room behind the kitchen. Staff is a mixed bag; the owner or shift manager was rather aggressive to take my order, even though I was the only patron. The cashier was super friendly. I ordered the bbq pork banh mi and it wasn't all that great. I noticed the staff use a microwave to make my order which was one alert. The bbq pork also had a weird mouth-feel, almost like chunky pate, vs firm ground bbq pork. The pork is a bit salty. The filling is crunchy, but rather flat in taste - it didn't have that pop that a good banh mi gives the tastebuds. Price point and location are fantastic!
