This place is bad!! There's no other way to say it. I don't know what other people see or taste in the food here, but my experience was just awful. My husband and I went during dinner-time rush on a Friday night. The place was packed!! The staff was rude and unhelpful (ultimately another customer helped us get our bearings by explaining the drill for paying/seating/etc). The food was about what you get from a hospital cafeteria, and the selection was abysmal. Even items they claimed to have on their menu they were "out" of (at 6:00pm? Give me a break!). Afterward, we both got sick from our meals. We had to skip the remainder of our evening plans to return home and nurse the illness. We won't return, and we highly encourage you to avoid this place, too!! read more

First things first I don't usually do a buffet but I had been told by several people to give Mama Hamil's a try. So I went at lunch I thought the cost was very inexpensive so that got me a little nervous. When I got to the buffet itself it was very clean and very well attended to. The taste was just like home!! Good & flavorful. I sent my mother a picture of my plate & she wanted to know "who cooked that for me?". My server was very attentive also. Definitely will be back. read more

Mama Hammil's has huge country charm with a huge country buffet. Fried chicken, ribs, chicken livers, and all the sides you grew up with await you and don't get me started on the desserts! I could have stolen their dish of banana pudding. Some of the classics are perfection, such as the lima beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and mac n' cheese. Some are off, such as the potato salad and yams cooked in turnip green juice (it's just not my thing). I would recommend Mama Hammil's to anyone wanting a good, calorie rich, Southern meal! I don't get the Hamil's hype. They have excellent sweet tea but the food is just meh. It is all greasy, bland, cafeteria type food. Unless you go super early don't expect to find a seat right away. I was told it is a great place to eat for vegetarians. This is so far from true. They put meat in most of the vegetable dishes too. read more

Stopped in on a road trip to St. Louis. Just did a blind Yelp pick based on reviews. Turned out well. The first good sign was the full parking lot. And lots of local EMS personnel vehicles in attendance. Always a good sign. Cops and firemen know where to eat well for cheap. Good home cooked food served buffet style. You have plenty of seating choices. They have an upstairs and downstairs. Tables, Booths and a long family style table. We picked the table and it was different to eat at a full tables with strangers and it works. Meet some nice folks! A good selection of choices. From Soups and salads to Home style classics. Meatloaf, Chicken. Some Pasta dishes. Plenty of sides also. I had the meatloaf with Black-eyed peas and baked beans with some cornbread. Also they have chicken livers and seeing how as I love 'em had to try 'em also. Everything was good. The chicken livers were alittle dry, but they had a good flavor. The meatloaf was a home cooked well done classic. Tender and moist, seasoned just right. The Black-eyed peas and beans were perfect, it like how I would like to make my peas and never seem to make happen. My S/O and the gals across from us had the chicken. They all said it was good. This is a great place to go if you want to try a lot of different Southern dishes all in one location. This is the second time the hubby and I visited here. The first time we were overwhelmed and overjoyed, but this time we were a little less satisfied. One point this restaurant could improve upon is their customer service. Most of the people who come here are locals and regulars, but it would be nice for the workers at the cash register to be more welcoming and supportive and be sure that everyone knows the process. It is a buffet, but you need to get drinks from your hostess rather than self-serve like many other buffet restaurants. This led to some confusion as we were looking around trying to figure out who or where we got our drinks from. The food was mostly good. The macaroni and cheese was terrible and I had higher hopes for some of the desserts. Peach cobbler was delicious, but the banana pudding looked like slop. read more

My wife has been telling me for months I need to try this place. So I finally went. Me and my wife drove from Memphis to Jackson to eat here. It was worth the drive. Sure it is a 3 hour drive from Memphis and then 3 hours back. But I love my wife and she wanted to go!! The food was really good. They have a wide selection of food choices. The day I went they have fried chicken, ribs, BBQ chicken, meatloaf and catfish. They have all kinds of vegetables and breads. This is one of the best restaurants in the Jackson area! Their buffet as so many options that are all so good! They have great parking options and it is very easy to find a table! Their service is great and you pay when you walk in, so no worries with that at the end! The only thing I will say is the desserts could be better, but I usually don't have room for them anyways! This place is fun! Great lunch buffet with every local food you can think of - fried chicken, ribs, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, sweet tea. They even had deep fried liver and gizzards!! Not my thing but it shows how local this place is. Everything tastes really good and the choices are great. The only pick I have with this place is that the soft serve icecream tasted sort of funny... it was more slushy than creamy. But for less than $10 per head, I can't really complain. You dine communally on long picnic tables, or if you prefer a private table there are booths or small tables by the window and second floor. I can't remember what I ate and liked but I remember enjoying the food and conversations with random people at our table. I'm not usually a buffet person, unless I'm in Madison, MS and eating at Mama Hamil's! What a wonderful collection of Southern cooking. I last visited the buffet back in August. It was my husband's first time visiting Mississippi with me. While he was raised in Maryland, he was soon entranced by the buffet at Mama Hamil's. We sampled their fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, mashed potatoes, chicken 'n dumplyings, fried okra, mac 'n cheese, and the list goes on and on. For dessert, we had chocolate fudge cake, and the banana pudding (MUST HAVE!). All the soul food you can possibly imagine placed on 4 large buffet tables. We both left Mama Hamil's really full, and really happy. At about $10/person, this buffet is a great deal. There's a reason why the place (while 2 stories large), is always packed. Pretty good lunch buffet. The veggies were much better than I expected. Chicken was ok. BBQ wasn't bad at all. Well worth the $10 price. Everyone working was pleasant.
