There are plenty of places in Boston that can make a good burger. What is much harder to find is a…read morerestaurant that feels like it couldn't exist anywhere else. I'd heard Waverly had one of the better burgers around, so when a friend was visiting for Sail Boston, we made the short trip off the more traveled streets to see if it lived up to the reputation. I'm glad we did. Waverly is tucked away on a quiet side street in Charlestown, and that's part of the charm. The dining room is small, warm, and comfortably lived in. Nothing about it feels manufactured. The decor has an old soul without feeling dated, almost like it has been there longer than it actually has. Later I learned that's intentional. The restaurant takes its name from the historic Waverly House, a grand Charlestown hotel from the 1800s, and was designed to capture the feeling of the neighborhood's historic brownstones rather than chase the latest restaurant trend. The room felt like it belonged to Charlestown. Most of the people inside looked like they could walk home after dinner. That's the kind of place I always hope to find when visiting a neighborhood, somewhere that serves the people who live there first, and everyone else second. We asked for a window table, and the staff happily accommodated us. It's a small gesture, but one that made us feel welcomed instead of processed. The burger justified the trip on its own. I added the sunny-side-up egg, but the real star was the bacon-onion jam. It pulled everything together without overpowering the beef. The burger itself was tender, the sesame brioche somehow managed to hold everything together, and I appreciated the choice of Vermont white cheddar and Grillo's pickles. Those aren't flashy ingredients, they're just the right ones. Seeing Downeast Cider on tap certainly didn't hurt either. What impressed me most wasn't that Waverly was trying to reinvent the neighborhood burger. It wasn't. It simply executed it exceptionally well, with enough confidence to let good ingredients and thoughtful choices do the talking. Charlestown wouldn't just lose a burger if Waverly disappeared. It would lose one of those neighborhood places that quietly makes a neighborhood feel like itself. You come for a well executed meal, but you leave feeling like you've experienced a small piece of Charlestown. Places like that are a lot harder to replace than a good menu.

Was in town for the marathon. Went a bit out of our way to visit this restaurant for brunch on…read moreSunday, the day before the marathon as part of my carb loading plan for the race. I really, really, REALLY wanted pancakes. The website said brunch goes until 3. We get there at 2:50. They said they were no longer serving brunch and they've moved to their limited menu, because brunch ends at 3. You can imagine the puzzled look on our faces when they told us it ended at 3pm but it's still 2:50pm. They said we would have been fine if we were 5 minutes earlier. Weird that 2:45 is fine but 2:50 is not. We were annoyed, to say the least. But we were hungry, we didn't know what else was around, we needed to eat, and it already took us 30 minutes to get here in an Uber. Two guys came in after us, also before 3, who were also really excited for brunch. They too were shut down. We ordered off the limited menu. It was okay. It was fine. But that's not the point. If brunch ends at 2:45, then say it ends at 2:45. Don't say it ends at 3pm and then shut people down because it secretly closes earlier. I get that you guys want to switch the kitchen over and prep for dinner, but serve the food you say you're going to serve at the time you're going to serve them. Nobody came in after us and the other party that was also in before 3, so it's not like there was some never ending rush of people trying to get brunch. I also don't recall anyone else coming in before we left probably an hour. Poor communication and poor customer service.

It was a rainy Sunday, but the restaurant was still pretty busy, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation, especially for brunch. The space itself is nice, with a rustic and cozy touch.I loved the overall vibe and ambiance! The cocktails and mocktails were both really good. We started with the truffle fries, which were fairly standard and didn't stand out too much on their own, but the aioli was SO delicious and easily made up for it! The brunch menu had plenty of variety, and everything we ordered was flavorful and satisfying. The only small downside was that the homestyle potatoes were a little undercooked, but aside from that, we had a great experience. I'd definitely come back, especially to try their pizza pies next time!

Huge shoutout to Eduardo, the manager, who went above and beyond to make our sisters holiday outing feel special and intentional, and to our server Paulina, who was attentive, warm, and truly wanted everything to be perfect. And it was. Let's talk ambiance first because whew. Chic. Stylish. Aesthetic on aesthetic. Even the walk to the bathroom felt curated. Ladies... the mirror alone deserves a moment. Full body selfie approved. Now the drinks. The mocktail I had was SO good. Balanced, flavorful, refreshing. I like a mocktail that has flavor and layers without being super sweet. The apps thoughhhhhh! They deserve their own paragraph because baby... The crab rangoon was TO DIE FOR. That old school wrap dough situation? I have been hunting for that exact texture and flavor forever. My fave restaurant switched dough and I haven't had a good Rangoon since then until now. It was crispy, nostalgic, and perfect. The fried egg rolls? Delicious. The pickled cucumbers? Bright and refreshing and er literally ate every drop, lol. But the WINNER... those fall off the bone ribs. I might have made a sound when I bit into them. Cooked to perfection. A full blown flavor party in my mouth. The scallion pancakes were the only thing that did not hit for me. The dough was thicker and heavier than I prefer. I love mine light and airy like traditional scallion pancakes. If they leaned that way I would have been obsessed. Our main courses... baybeeee The Dan Dan noodles... I did not even get a bite. I went to ask my sister for a taste and they were GONE. All of them. That says everything. My other sister loved the dumplings and even more that they fried them for her instead of serving them traditionally. And the sauce with those dumplings... Let me tell you about the sauce. I am OBSESSED. I took some home and Eduardo generously gave me more to take. That is top tier service and an at home sauce party, lol. My fried house rice was excellent. The mix of veggies and flavors was perfection. With everything else we ordered I could not even finish it. And then... dessert. Eduardo and Paulina surprised us with a complimentary cheesecake that was so light and decadent, topped with fruit and homemade whipped cream. Next time I am absolutely saving space for that. The customer service was truly top tier. The decor, the food, the staff, the background music. Everything PERFECT. My sisters and I sat for hours. We laughed. We ate. We shared emotions. We were present. That alone tells you how comfortable and welcoming this space is. I would go back today. I cannot wait to bring my husband and some of my fellow foodies. Yelp Elite gang... this place is officially five star approved. GOO!

You can stand at the end of the bar and order drinks if you like while you wait. After I was seated, I was promptly brought water and had my order taken. I got a cup of chowder and the lobster roll (hot with butter). I got both my chowder and lobster roll in under 10 mins of ordering. Well oiled machine. The chowder was hot and salty and creamy. The perfect combo with the rainy weather. The lobster roll was good but I wish it would have been hot. It was closer to room temp than hot. The lobster roll was marked market price and was 40$. The cup of chowder was 10$. Overall good spot when you have the time to wait but not worth the 40$ price for the lobster roll.

This joint is so colorful, bright and fun! Walking in, you are bombarded with fun colored decor, sports memorabilia and perfectly set tables. We were instantly greeted and helped at the door by the hostess. My daughter and I had our luggage with us so it was sweet of the hostess to hold the door for us. We were sat at a booth by the bar. We got such a great view of the bar and outside tables. We looked over the menu and they had a little bit of everything breakfast. My daughter got orange juice started and I got a cup of coffee. The gentleman that was serving us today didn't have a great personality. He was pretty dry which didn't really set the best tone for a great first impression. I got the All American breakfast with bacon. My daughter got the Spanish omelet. Both came with potatoes. So while our food was being prepared, my daughter and I just kicked it. Our food was dropped off after a bit. To be honest, I found my plate humorous. 18 bucks for a few small rounds of hashbrowns, 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bacon. I guess when I read potatoes on the menu, I was expecting POTATOES. Country potatoes, a slab of hashbrowns.... Being from Idaho, these "potatoes" were not it. My breakfast was pretty basic so yes, the eggs and bacon was good. My daughter's Spanish omelet looked decent. She ate about 2 thirds of it. And a couple hashbrown rounds. Overall, the location, setting and concept of brunch all day is great. Could the plate look more exciting? Yes. Could my server been more kind? Yes. Could my server actually served my daughter and I? Yes. Could I have gotten refill on my coffee? Yes. My server did the bare minimum which I find annoying. I just feel like for a beautiful venue the service didn't match it's vibe. My server was far from bright, colorful and happy. I look forward to heading back to Boise today for a real breakfast with real portions and real potatoes. I could have saved 50 bucks and got a meal at McDonald's for the same portions and service I got today.
