Signature Bone Broth (Medium)
Ling L.

Consistency is key! Mala Town has been busy every time I go here, but the quality is not consistent. I have trouble deciding if I want to order the signature bone broth in mild or medium. Sometimes when I get mild, the soup is just milky with no slight kick to it, other times when I get mild the soup has a strong kick to it. The ingredients are not restocked in a timely manner. Often times I find myself having to go back towards the beginning of the line to get the veggies that were initially not there when I was in line, but got restocked once I'm towards the end of the line. Quality of ingredients have gone down. Frozen tofu used to be one of my favorites/essentials here! However, Mala Town definitely replaced their frozen tofu with something else. It's no longer spongy, instead it's hard and chewy now. They also don't put out their dried shiitake anymore :( I'm able to overlook these negatives, as I can always add more chili oil to my soup if the "mild soup" is actually mild, having to go back in line to get ingredients that were restocked while I was in line, and try different ingredients instead of sticking with my essentials. The sauce bar is still great, and if you're in luck they'll have their complimentary tea out as well. Overall, I'm quite disappointed in how Mala Town has only gone downhill ever since I've introduced my friends and family to it. I will most likely be going to other malatang spots (like Miss Gu Malatang or Cuanyue Malatang) instead as I know they're more consistent and are actually worth the wait.

5 stars! The tea is back! The food is consistently good. My wife and I come here about once a month. If I don't finish my huge bowl, I combine all of my family's bowls and I literally have another 1.5 meal at home. For a self serve place, it's actually decent service as you can flag anyone if you need anything. The tables were pretty packed on a Friday night. You know it's good when Asians of all ages frequent this establishment. The restaurant is very clean. You line up to load up your ingredients, pay by weight and get seated. There is an amazing sauce bar and free tea!

Get ready to be full and happy! My favorite part is that they use high quality metal bowls Food: They have a wide selection of fresh veggies. They have pork, lamb, and beef slices. Some of their meat is even marinated. Service: A lot of the process is atomized for a quick process, so it was nice and fast! Parking: This plaza has a lot of food and milk tea options so it can get busy but i've never really had a hard time finding parking. They are right next to a tesla charging station as well if you want to charge up during dinner.

Love this place! Definitely my go-to hangout spot when we want something to eat. Service is fast, delicious soup bases, and a variety of options!

My new go to malatang place. I was super surprised at how many options of veggies and protein they offer plus they offer tom yum soup. I found that majority of malatang places only offer bone broth or spicy bone broth. The tom yum soup was super flavorful and paired well with all the toppings. Another huge plus is they offer free tea by the sauce bar. It can get pretty busy but the line goes by pretty fast and they assign you a table to sit down at. The tables are pretty close to each other but it makes sense for how busy it gets in there

First timer having Malatang. Come in grab bowl & tongs. Pick all your toppings and place In bowl. They'll weigh & ask what broth you want. I went with the beef bone broth spicy. They give you tags and tell you where to sit. While waiting I went to back and made my own dipping sauce. Water and some sort of complimentary drink was also over there. We got our food in about 5mins or so. It was good! I liked the broth & all the ingredients that I chose. I tried my friends tom yum broth, and it was good in a creamy way. It could be more spicy though. I'd come back to try their other broths & id eat here again.

After trying YGF Malatang in the exact same plaza, we decided to try out Mala Town to see which is better. I can confidently say that I highly prefer Mala Town over YGF Malatang and will be back soon. [[ Some things I've noticed ]] 1.) Service - I thought it was really good. There is one person consistently going around giving you extra napkins, picking up plates, refilling water and I thought she did an amazing job with how busy we got. 2.) Busy - We went right when it opened at 11:30am and at first thought it wasn't very popular. Boy were we wrong......the line grew so quickly and so many people started coming in. After trying it out, I can totally see why it's so popular and why so many people came. 3.) Packed - Everything is assigned seating after you pay which is a bit annoying and the tables are packed close together. I felt like I couldn't really have a nice private conversation since everyone is so close to you and there are some awkward stares. I think even though you cannot choose your seats, it's so busy so if they allowed you to free roam or take bigger seats, a lot of people would be stuck waiting in line and it would not be optimal. It's inconvenient but understandable for the business. 4.) Food - Lots of variety and I'm pretty sure they'll have anything you could possibly want. There is also a sizeable sauce bar so you can create your dipping sauce. We personally tried the Tom Yum Soup (SO GOOD) and the Signature Broth - Mild and I loved them both. The price per pound was $16.99 at the time of writing so it's not super cheap.

First time malatang followed with they heytea combo right after. Busy for Saturday night but seats open quick. Got a bowl and started adding ingredients. Good amount of veggies here. Clean and fresh. Got my go to spinach and Napa. Different types of noodles but I got the knife cut noodle. Also has a range of seafood, got the fish and some fish balls with different fillings. Few meat options but went with chuck and beef belly. Picked the sichuan style soup base. Weighed and paid at the counter. The bowl was about 2 pounds and the deduct the weight of the bowl. Broth was flavorful and was perfect. A bit oily but numbing spice was spot on without it being too spicy. Noodles went perfect with it. I'd recommend beef belly as it was more tender than the chuck. My favorite seafood was the shrimp paste ball. Sauce bar has variety of options and has a creamy peanut sauce.

Whenever I'm craving hot pot, this is one of the few places I automatically go to. Mala Town is a weigh-by-the-pound hot pot place with loads of toppings, including several tofu options, marinated meat, and scallops (which I love). This is one of the few hot pot places I've been to that don't close in the middle of the day, which is a nice touch. Most of the time, it's crowded and it takes a few minutes for your bowl to be ready, but I'd say it's always been worth the wait. I'm a fan of their medium-spicy bone broth, as well as their decently-sized sauce bar.

I took two friends here who were skeptical of Malatang places but this place blew us all away! This place is definitely a little more hip and modern if you need a good recommendation for friends visiting the area. All the staff are pleasant, welcoming, and helpful. You can choose your toppings, spice level, and broth type. There is also a sauce bar to create your own sauce. The soup is so filling and soothing on a cold day or even after a long day on your feet. I think you could make a light meal out of this place too depending on the toppings you grab. I love how clean the interior is and how neatly decorated the inside is. Even the plating is very neat and pretty. This place is the perfect lunch or dinner spot with friends when no one can decide where to go (we have ALL BEEN THERE). There's lots of parking and spots nearby to grab a sweet treat after. Thanks Mala Town! I'm going to come back over and over with my friends!!

This place is pretty solid! The broths were flavorful and came hot. There was a super long line during 2pm on Saturday, it was packed, but the turnover was fast, so we got sat right away after we paid. And the place was pretty big with lots of available seating. It's a buffet style, so you wait in line and walk up to the food and grab and go. I was a little disappointed with their vegetable selection, since they either ran out or didn't restock it.

Mild spicy beef bone broth base
Emily N.

Busy store, busier than YGF malatang in the same plaza! It's $1/lb more expensive than YGF but more variety for ingredients and soups. Beef bone broth mild vs. medium spicy comparison is jarring haha, I'm not good with spice so mild was good for me. Grab ingredients then get seated at a table while your food cooks. The tables were cleaned up quickly so no need to worry about seating.

In terms of price, this place is very affordable, with each bowl costing under $20, which is not expensive. The only downside is that the space inside is quite small, so you may have to wait if it gets crowded. However, overall the restaurant is very clean, the broth is solid, and the thick noodles have a great chewy texture. Next time, I'll probably try the thin noodles. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys ramen. Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Although Taishoken is known for their tsukemen, I'll always opt for mazesoba if I see it on a menu. The mazesoba here is easily some of the best I've had in the Bay Area. The included piece of chashu is well-seasoned, fall apart tender and had a good balance of lean to fatty meat. The noodles are cooked to perfection and have a really nice chew to them. There is just the right amount of sauce in the dish, and the raw egg yolk adds a wonderful richness that coats each strand of noodle when mixed. Included with your mazesoba is a small side of vinegar. I would definitely recommend trying out the mixed mazesoba on its own -- without the vinegar, and adding in the vinegar about half-way in in order to try out a completely different flavor profile of the noodles. The acidity of the vinegar cuts through the richness and keeps you coming back for bite after bite. If you've never tried mazesoba before, I can't recommend it enough at Taishoken. I can't wait to stop by again for another bowl.

First off: the location of this place just turned out to be a very closed off location. Not a lot of people knew about it, and the entrance towards the restaurant was rather pretty dark. It seemed kind of unwelcome, and we even had to wait a little bit even though there were plenty of seats available (I would understand the shortage of people serving, but even then, that shouldn't be an excuse. We shouldn't be the ones bearing the responsibility for it). I felt like as if I was rushed through this whole experience. Not only were the seating places small, but also, the portion for what they were offering was not worth it for its price. The customer service was almost as if it was non existent. I tried their ramen, and while the ramen noodles were good, the chashu was really rubbery and the onion taste was too overpowering. In addition, the pork broth was too salty, and was WAY too hot. Also, the fact that four gyozas were a little bit too less. I honestly don't know if I'm going to come back, unless things improve otherwise. It's just my take on this restaurant, but I think they need quite a bit of improving.

The soups came in bowls that were irrgular shaped and colorful. Everything tasted good. The chicken Karaage was generously portioned and tasted great. My son devoured them in no time. The Hakata Tonkatsu had a very rich, well developed broth that was so delicious. Might have been a little too rich for me as I was not able to finish the meal. This dish, gyoza, was disappointing. It did not look like it was homemade - looked more store bought. We didn't care for the taste with the dipping sauce that came with it. Not sure if this was because we had the heavier broth first. It just fell flat after the robust and rich hakata tonkatsu meal I had. Service was friendly.
