    Mala Spicy Hot Pot
    Danielle S.

Went for lunch & everything had a great taste. Easy to pick your items and checkout with a minimal wait time. Steamed Dumplings could have been hotter, however the soup was HOT!! I put them into the soup and it was perfect. Self serve type of place so do not expect table service. Definitely will be back.

I'm back! I'm all by my lonesome here. It's 2:30 so it's very slow. The restaurant is located on…read more436G Vernon Tpke in Vernon, CT. This is Sichuan cuisine and American Chinese. The music is very Americanized. Ive always loved this place! For my drink, I'm having a Scorpion Bowl. A Scorpion bowl is a communally shared alcoholic tiki drink served in a large ceramic bowl traditionally decorated with wahine or hula-girl island scenes and meant to be drunk through long straws. Bowl shapes and decorations can vary considerably. Starting off as a single-serve drink known as the Scorpioncocktail, its immense popularity as a bowl drink in tiki culture is attributed to Trader Vic. This is good! I love the cute bowl! It's pretty big too for "just one." For my first item, I'm having a cup of hot and sour soup. Hot and sour soup is a variant of hulatang or "pepper hot soup" (Chinese: 胡辣汤) that originated from Henan cuisine. Also popular in Southeast Asia, India, Pakistan, and the United States, it is a flexible soup which allows ingredients to be substituted or added depending on availability. For example, the American-Chinese version can be thicker as it commonly includes corn starch, while in Japan, sake is often added. This is real good! It goes well with pepper. This one is especially thick. It was served in under a minute. The pepper really adds to the flavor! Next up, I'm having the Chili Pepper and Preserved Egg. Century eggs (also called preserved egg or 100-year egg) also known as alkalized or preserved eggs, is a Chinese dish made by preserving duck, chicken, or quail eggs in a mixture of clay, ash, salt, quicklime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months, depending on the processing method. Oh my! Nice garnish. These are delicious! It's quite spicy too! Beware. I think the chili peppers are minced into a sauce. For my next item, I'm having the Bean Jelly in a Spicy Vinaigrette. This is really liangfen or "cool rice noodles. It is also spelled liang fen, is a Chinese legume dish consisting of starch jelly that is usually served cold, with a savory sauce, often in the summer. It is most popular in northern China, including Beijing, Gansu, and Shaanxi, but may also be found in Sichuan and Qinghai. In Tibet and Nepal it is called laping and is a common street vendor food. In Kyrgyzstan it is an ingredient in a noodle dish called ashlan fu. Wherever they call it, like it! Jelly made out of beans is very odd. This bowl is huge! Yes, it's spicy! It's nicely garnished too. I love the numbing peppercorns! For my entree, I'm having the Hot Spicy Bowl (with chicken) - very spicy. Dry pot chicken, also referred as hot pot chicken, is a dish served as a dry hot pot, cooked with chili pepper, garlic and chicken, by fast frying the chicken in oil. Dry pot chicken is but one type of hot pot dish. The seasoning, ingredients and cooking methods are similar to the more common "wet" hot pots, but dry hot pots do not have the soup base. I like the soup base (which is why I order this). This is good! It came out quick, is super hot, tasty and very spicy! For my next drink, I'm having Maker's Mark on the rocks. That's it. No sweet vermouth or bitters here. Oh this is strong! I don't often have straight liquor on the rocks! For dessert, I'm having the Sweet Sesame Paste Filling Rice Balls. balls. Sesame sweet rice balls usually refer to either Tang Yuan (boiled glutinous rice balls with a molten black sesame filling) or Jian Dui (crispy deep-fried sesame balls coated in seeds). That serve the former. It is served in hot rise water. I love these things! What a great meal here!

Outside is very much a busy shopping plaza in not the best part of town. Inside is a completely different story. Very clean and spacious, lots of booths and tables. Decorated well and a lot to see. The staff were friendly but there was a slight language barrier. We fumbled through the menu and found some bites to try. Food came out relatively quick, and that was a bit to manage because there were a lot of plates brought rather quickly. We got pics and dug in. The bites were flavored well. Nothing felt too greasy or under seasoned. The white pepper chicken was very crispy. But not a lot of chicken on each bite. The sweet and sour soup was both sweet and sour, but balanced enough that you could keep on eating it. The dumplings were fresh noodles and the filling was spiced well. The only flop was the spare ribs. Really tasty sauce, but very little meat on the bone. Had to suck on the bones to scrape enough meat off to make it a proper appetizer. It tasted good, just was not easy to eat. Price for the area was high for the neighborhood. It's got the quality and the flavor to command that price easily, but it doesn't match the stores. It's really good, but know that you're getting the real deal sichuan experience. Expect some heat, some saucy fingers, and some bones, and you'll get some really good bites

The menu is online, viewable by scanning the QR code in your booth, and at the end then you pay at the cashier not through the website. We each ordered the mini hotpot with two broths and got a table full of meats and veggies and even ordered a second round of meat (in hindsight, that was too much and we weren't able to finish it all). The sauce bar was fully stocked, and the ingredients were fresh. The bowls and spoons were a bit hard to find though and I had to ask for a staff member for help. The fruit bar was a bit empty, but there was enough for a dessert. The wait staff was very friendly, though they kept forgetting to refill our water, and we kept asking them about it. Overall, a great experience!

Turns out, that was a very apt description. We arrived and got seated at a table with a very nice curved window view. I can imagine being here on a rainy or snowy day and getting to be surrounded by the weather while not having to get wet. The service was friendly, if mostly absent, and fast. This place mostly loses stars on the food. We had: wonton soup, miso soup, scallion pancakes, crab rangoons, happy family, tangerine chicken, and asparagus and snap peas with shrimp. The wonton soup seemed to be a beef broth soup, interesting change up from any wonton soup I've had before, a little salty and good wontons. The miso soup was also a good miso. The crab rangoons were too sweet and the wrapper too thick, thus making it chewy, but at least you could tell there was something in there beyond just cream cheese. The hunt for good crab rangoons continues. The scallion pancakes were very thick, but at least not greasy. The sauce was punchy and pleasant. The asparagus and snap peas with shrimp was positioned as having a light flavor, and that was very accurate. Almost like they were steamed and then served, but you could see a sauce coating them. The happy family was coated in a brown sauce that didn't carry much flavor either, but nothing was wrong either. The tangerine chicken was listed as one spicy out of three, and I'm happy to report they understand spicy rating. While the broccoli was chopped a tad large, the chicken was cooked very well, and you got just some spice on the back end with sweet on the front. Overall, nothing here was bad, but it also came across and middling. If you asked me to write this review a couple days from now I feel I'd have trouble remembering anything about this place except the window seat. I am willing to try some of the other aspects of the menu some time in the future, but I'm not sending anyone running here either.
