I have no idea how this place is not rated 4+ stars. We were passing through and decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a whirl. We were greeting by a young man and seated promptly. We ordered boneless spare ribs and steamed dumplings as an appetizer and they both came out steaming hot and absolutely delicious. The dumplings had more meat than have ever had. The boneless ribs were big and flavorful. I ordered Moo Soo Pork and my wife had the House Egg Fu Young. The portions were enormous and the food was hot, fresh, and delicious. I wish we lived closer so we could come back. The owner/chef came out and said hi which was a nice touch to a great experience. I highly recommend. read more

Mediocre at best. The cold sesame noodles were in a very watery slurry. Awful! I've had many and never had worse. Won't be back.

Starting with the good. I thought the host was personable and nice. The restaurant was clean and in good order. I got takeout and found the food to be overly saturated with oil which made the food greasy and took away from potential flavor profiles. I don't know if it was a take out issue or not and I have not eaten in the restaurant to make a fair comparison. All in all it was "eh". Not terrible, not great. What a transformation! We loved everything about the Great Wall under its new ownership: the warm welcome, the spotlessly clean dining room, the delicious food, freshly prepared. Salt and pepper squid was quick-fried and greaseless. Moo shu pork was a fresh stir-fried version with tender slices of pork. The wine was nicely chilled. The owners were engaging. You don't feel the rush to leave because your worried about getting a parking ticket. It's free parking, which means I can sit back relax and enjoy my amazing food. I'm definitely going back. Years ago, I left the Great Wall because they kept shoving the gourmet menu in my face; they lost my business after I inquired to see the regular menu (more than once). So when I heard new management had taken over the Great Wall, I want to try the offerings. First of all, I was delighted with the updated decor and restrooms; clean and bright! Scanning the full menu, I spotted a dish I don't always see in the appetizers - cold sesame noodles. I also order a standard for lunch, chicken and broccoli. The young server hovered but was very nice. But I must say the appetizer shocked me. Never have I had cold sesame noodles so bland. No seasonings are kept on the tables except salt and pepper; and were it not for the remnants of some good (not excellent) hot and sour soup, there would have been no taste. The chicken and broccoli was made with fine ingredients and although not flavorless, one could tell the taste was not at it's peak. Perhaps I am missing something? Perhaps they meant it to be lower sodium? All of this left me bewildered as I pondered whether I would ever return. read more

I was refused service here. I was discriminated against as a handicapped person with a service animal ...who is perfectly well behaved. I even showed them the federal ADA law in a kindly way! All I wanted was some takeout. I went hungry that night. Now all I want is some education and justice. Please feel free to drop by there and dispense the education bit. What's with all the negative reviews? Yeah, it takes a while to get your food. But under the crazy circumstances, the service seems reasonable - and more importantly, safe. And once you get your food, it's awesome. I just factor in a little more time or get delivery so we don't have to stand around in the parking lot. From my perspective of a Chinese Food snob who lived in San Francisco for 19 years and has eaten lots of great Asian food, this is the best spot in the area. Great Wall is one of the rare Chinese spots that offers fresh veg options from local farms. Throw down a few extra bucks for the gourmet menu! Go for whatever is on the seasonal veggies menu of the day. For instance, last week I had a perfectly cooked fresh, local asparagus dish - simple and perfect. For everyone complaining about their orange beef and chicken fingers... uh, maybe don't order orange beef or chicken fingers. That stuff nasty. From the wonton soup (a light delicious broth and crispy, fresh veggies) and appetizers (the homemade steamed pork and scallion dumplings were to die for, the egg roll light and crispy) to the main courses (the baby bok choy and tofu was divine). SO fresh and delicious, made to order, well-priced, on the table quickly but clearly prepared with the greatest of care. The sauces were perfect, not overly salty, and the vegetables were at the height of freshness and still had that slight crunch. Beyond that, the chef is lovely and friendly, the atmosphere is warm and inviting. You're in the hands of an artist. If you're in the Florence area - or even if you're not, it's worth the drive. Went to try out the Great Wall with the new owners and really enjoyed it tonight. The new owner was super welcoming and we had a great talk after dinner. Food came out fresh, hot, and quickly. My favorite dish tonight was Stuffed Eggplant...great sauce, crispy eggplant, a unique take on the dish (very different from the past owner's recipe. The chef, Fong, also has worked many years at UMass cooking, and UMass has won top college cooking in the nation for 7 years in a row. We hope a lot more people will try this place and support them as she is clearly hard-working and dedicated. I ate way more than I needed to as it was so delicious. read more

Ordered take out from here and it was not good at all. I got a pupu platter, a small fried rice, and orange chicken which comes with white rice and an egg roll. The total was just over $38, which seemed steep. The food arrived and there wasn't white rice or the egg roll delivered with the orange chicken. The orange chicken was kind of gross to be honest... we didn't eat more than one piece. The pupu platter was mostly overfried and dry, not much flavor. The rice had a weird burnt flavor that overpowered every other flavor. So we paid over $40, and only had a few bites... a few bites was enough to curb our appetite from wanting to order here again, or anywhere else for the night. I used to solidly standby this restaurant, but the quality, price, and missed items were enough for me to pass and order from somewhere else next time. read more

there are probably 50 Chinese restaurants between our house and Great Wall, but we happily drive 40 miles for incredible stuffed "dragon skin", homemade slippery rice noodles and in-house made tofu. In fact, it is the only place I order tofu. Saturday morning dimsum is casual and scrumptious. Service is great. you may have to wait for some of the made-to-order dishes but what you will receive is well worth it. Prices are extraordinarily for this high quality food. read more

Chicken fingers you can get better anywhere else. If you want beef teriyaki and are used to American flavor, it's not here. The chicken wings are best in the area. It's a much smaller portion but can't tell if that's the economy or new owners. I don't normally write reviews, but seeing the negative reviews here has prompted me to defend this fantastic neighborhood restaurant. I've been doing both take-out and eating in (though not this year) at Great Wall for many many years, many dozens of times. The vast majority of times, the food is excellent, fresh and delicious. They sometimes get extremely busy, but the estimated time they give for pickup is always spot on. They might not have the most coddling customer service, and the interior decor needed an update 20 years ago, but get over it! Bottom line: delicious Chinese food! I love the Great Wall, definitely one of the best in Western Mass. I came here with Lisa who knows the place like no one but the owners, :). I had squid (served with shrimp) for the first time here and it was muy muy delicioso (Espanol for emphasis :D). It was served over some greens (forgot the name) and with white rice. While the shrimp and squid were good, the best part was the really really amazing Red Snapper (I think that's what it was) and house white wine, yum! I don't like disclaimers but I'll add one anyway: I thoroughly, and I mean thoroughly, enjoyed the food but I must admit I was starving when I arrived. To be fair, I came here a few years back, 2008-09 school year, and had food from the regular menu and that was just as amazing as my recent visit. Little, unremarkable looking restaurant in a modest small strip mall. BUT..the BEST Chinese food in Western Massachusetts. There are two menus...basically Americanized Chinese food, and a more authentic Chinese menu. Both are excellent. Inside is modest, but orderly and clean. It was also quiet, without lots of music. The staff provided extraordinary service. One young man sat down and explained variations in preparation, and how he could modify a recipe to suit our needs. Amazing. I went here when I first moved to Florence 7 years ago. There was this elderly woman at the desk who took the orders. I called in my order the first couple of times, and when I got home, my order was always wrong. The third time, I thought i would in person and order, maybe that would help. She acted like I was bothering her, but she took my order, and I got home, I found the order was wrong yet again. I didn't return until about two weeks ago, and thankfully, she was no longer there. I placed my order, General Tso's tofu for my husband, and I got broccoli and tofu in garlic sauce. The sauce in both of these dishes was a salty broth. No general Tso's sweet and spicy thick sauce. The garlic sauce in my dish was not sauce nor was it garlicky. This dish also had the same salty broth. We couldn't finish the food, and threw it away. Poor customer service. Ordered a pu pu platter a shrimp dish and a crab Rangoon platter. The crab Rangoon side order was missing. We called, spoke with someone who said they would refund and then the boss calls and says she knows she packed it. also they say on their website free delivery but then when I asked for delivery she said they are now charging for it now bc gas prices are up . I only live one mile away so I opted to pickup. To lose a regular local customer in the neighborhood over 7.00 crab Rangoon is just poor customer service. Awful. The orange chicken (which costed 13 dollars) was absolute trash. Not only was it crammed into a tiny white to go box and not even a normal plastic container but was so over cooked it was hard as a rock and disgusting to eat. I had to section all of it off my plate to throw away and the portion size was small. Obviously frozen and then overly deep fried trash. The lo mein was well.. lo mein. It is hard to screw up lo mein as it is one of the easiest things to make. I got a beef lo mein with maybe about 2 ounces (roughly 8 small pieces) of beef in it and 2 small pieces of onion. Other than that it was just a big heaping pile of wasted 8 dollars. I will never touch this place again. This food was not good. Stay away if you can. read more
