While my review is only based off of the hot and sour soup, I will say that it is one of the best I have had. I am kinda a hot and sour soup snob and this passed all the key checks for me. First it was hot, temperature hot, ample amount of tofu and egg and a large amount of bamboos shoots which is one of my favorite parts! Base was sour and hot but not that your mouth is burning. This family owned and run restaurant is a staple of the neighborhood and has been for over a decade. I love their dragon skin, hubby likes the pork fried rice and we both go crazy for the seasonally offered corn dumplings. I could eat here every day of the week and still want their dim sum on Saturday. It's a consistent, unique and delicious place to eat. There was a time that this was a really great place to go for especially good, fresh Chinese food. The last few times though the food has still been good (not AS good as it once was) the service has been terribly poor if not rude, and the standard of cleanliness simply not acceptable; dirty table and glasses, and, though to some perhaps a petty complaint, the cloth napkins smelled of strongly fragranced dryer sheets or detergent. I drove by today and was reminded how Great Wall doesn't look like much from the outside. If I didn't know what was inside, I would keep driving. I love discovering reasonably priced restaurants that serve great specialty or interesting food.Great Wall is just the kind of place I would look for if I were trying to find a restaurant in an area I was visiting. I started to go here years ago after it was recommended by a Chinese American friend of mine. There are two menus and the slightly more adventurous/interesting fare is on the "gourmet menu." It means that people with a range of tastes can enjoy the place. Yes, there is egg foo yong but there is also dragon skin; there is sesame chicken and there is also stuffed tofu. They also have seasonal produce and apparently make a killer corn cake which I haven't yet tried. The Dim Sum is very popular for groups and lots of people enjoy take-out from here. Plenty of parking and just off the beaten path. If you don't live in the area, you would probably miss it. It isn't fancy or pretentious - just good Chinese food with a range of options! read more

This place is great! I believe they use fresh produce if at all possible. For example, the pineapple chicken has fresh pineapple. I really like the roasted garlic green beans. If I have a gripe, it's that they are not as consistent as some of the others. My pork fried rice last time was very light on the pork. Maybe they were running low on pork!? We have been customer's of the Great Wall for years and order the same gourmet dish most of the time, so we know what to expect. This last order, the tofu was over cooked, tough and inedible. After calling and asking for credit, they told me to bring the food back and when I did, the elderly woman was quite rude and argued with me saying they cook it the same way every time, actually they don't. The one thing that has been consistent with regards to the few times I have asked for credit, is this woman's response- rude bordering on angry and her lack of common courtesy. Fourteen hungry Taiwanese people can't be wrong! I had my graduation dinner here and my entire family loved it, which says a lot. First things first: the food was excellent. We're Taiwanese, so we're good eaters. We're family, so we don't agree on anything. We all have spent significant time on the home island, so we know authentic. And we all liked it. Even my extra-critical grandma, who is an amazing cook, thought it was good. And don't worry, she wasn't just being polite. Secondly, Great Wall doesn't look like much. I was really worried because Florence isn't exactly Flushing and a lot of the other Chinese places in Western Mass are questionable. But where else was I going to take my huge entourage? So I called ahead, they said fine, we're set. They had to put us at two different tables, but that's fine considering the number of people we had. The service was standard for Chinese restaurants -- not a lot of fuss, just slap the dish down and let us eat in peace. So we order from here pretty regularly, probably close to once a week. More often than not we are getting delivery because its relatively quick. But I think tonight may have been the final straw. We put up with the unbelievably rude lady who answers the phone, and the wait times that are never ever accurate, and the over priced food because the food actually is pretty good and not as greasy as Chinese food can be. But I would say about 95% of the time they screw up our order. I have even started having them repeat our order back to me and they still mess it up. These are the most recent screw ups that I can remember.... Tonight I received a Vegetable Lo Mein although what was ordered was vegetable fried rice.. ...previously... two with rices instead of a large akai rice tofu with string beans and broccoli with no tofu A large white rice less than half way filled chicken fried rice with no vegetables, instead no chicken and all vegetables Double charged for crab rangoon that was completely left out of the order and when I called for a refund it was never issued. The list goes on but that is all I can remember for now... Clearly we are the morons for continually ordering from them and hoping for different results but its convenient. I think however, after tonight its just not worth it.. Frankly, Great Wall is the best Cantonese cuisine you'll find west of Boston. There are two reasons for this: 1 - Great Wall is the ONLY Cantonese place I could find in the area. There is a ton of other Chinese places claiming to be Cantonese but most of them have chefs who are not actually from southern China. Not that folks outside of southern China can't cook Cantonese cuisine, but it's almost blatantly apparent when the chefs' cooking is not Cantonese and, sadly, this is the case in pretty much every Chinese restaurant except for Great Wall. 2 - The food at Great Wall is actually amazing. As in, it's better than at least half the Cantonese restaurants I've tried in New York City. It's authentic, it's tasty and it's not greasy at all. Make sure, when you go, that you order from the specials menu and not the normal menu that has your standard take-out-menu flair such as House Special Fried Rice or whatever. The problems: 1 - It's in Florence, which is hard to get to from UMass, etc. unless you have access to a car. 2 - It's in Florence, which is a nice town but still is pretty run down. 3 - The place looks like it hasn't been renovated since the 70s. For most people this is a bad thing. I actually like it since it reminds me of old dingy Hong Kong restaurants. 4 - The selection of truely good food is limited to the 15 or so items on the specials menu. So, yeah, best Chinese in Western Mass. They can do things like stuffed tofu that no other place in the valley touches with a ten-foot pole. Certainly authentic if you know what to order. read more

Fantastic and legit Chinese food. Many interesting and unusual items, in particular from the gourmet menu. Service was ultra fast, seems like the decor has remained the same since 1970. A shocking number of large goldfish occupy a fish tank; nice hand painted mural on one of the walls. Worth a visit, order something that sounds bizarre and you'll probably be rewarded. The gourmet menu at this place is actually not bad - the takeout/delivery options however are horrendous. You never know if your whole order is going to arrive. If you are lucky enough to actually get the food you ordered it will come in a leaky Styrofoam container, probably inside a clear plastic bag with sauce sloshing around in it. I'd be happy to order from them again if they got their shit together and didn't behave as if forgetting an entire dish was just the cost of doing business whenever they deliver. I hate writing unfavorable reviews and impressions, because I don't want to deter people from trying it on their own and forming their own opinion. Even in this case - order up your favorite dishes, and go from there. However we've been having consistent ho-hum experiences and it finally propelled me to write something. We primarily order delivery or carry out, can't speak for dine-in, and the delivery service (with only one exception) has been on-time or sooner over the past year. Drivers is always polite and have had no hiccups with our orders. By far my biggest gripe is the place is way over-priced for what you get. They are SO SKIMPY with the rice! Never have I run out of rice with Chinese, in fact usually it's the complete opposite: you end up with a lingering white container in the fridge until you finally give in and throw it out. Every time you open a container it's 2/3rds full, and every time we say, "is that all the rice?". Maybe this is a case of impressions being everything - put it in a smaller container and stuff it full! Food taste/quality is subjective, and I don't think it's fair to knock a business simply because they put their own 'flavor or spin on a dish that you don't like. Mostly everything has been OK to good, but I will say (only because I doubt they are hand-made, rather likely purchased) that the fried dumplings are pretty bland -very doughy tasting and unless you drown them in sauce, they're not very passable. They offer a 'Gourmet' menu for significantly higher prices, but that just irks me - what does that say about the "normal" food you order? Should be consistent quality across the entire menu. All this would be just fine, I don't have high food standards, and I'll eat plenty of just-OK food. But for what you pay... A good example - I decided to stop in Springfield on my way home and pick up a carry out order instead. Two entree's, fried dumplings, came to $21. This same meal from Great Wall would have easily been $35. There are very few options in Florence for late-night delivery, so we often turn to this place for last-minute indulgences, however that's the *only* reason we continue to eat here. read more

We ordered takeout this evening for the first time from Great Wall. And it will be the last time. We ordered beef lo mein, moo goo gai pan, General Tso's chicken, pork dumplings, scallion pancakes and hot and sour soup. First of all all three main dishes were dry and flavorless. All came with a minuscule amount of sauce to choke down the flavorless ingredients. Points for the General Tso's being all white meat, but otherwise the meal was baffling in that there was no seasoning or other flavor to it at all. The dumplings meanwhile were almost burned and again lacked flavor. The scallion pancake was a disgusting, greasy, non-flaky mess. Absolutely inedible. It was absolutely drenched, soaked through, in oil. Gross. The soup was okay. And aside from the bad food, there's the issue of high prices for lunch-sized portions. Don't expect to have leftovers. And they only gave us one thing of rice for all of that food. Don't waste your time on this place. It's a shame because for a long time they had a reputation for being the best in the valley. Looks like they've decided to rest on the laurels. It's a double shame because there's really no alternate good Chinese in the Northampton area. read more

Called ahead 24 hours for the Peking Duck. It was tasty, however, they prepped the bird (took all the meat off) before plating it, so it wasn't as grand a spectacle as you may think. The Crispy Crackling Aromatic Pork was the highlight of the night. Large pieces of tender roasted pork, with the perfect amount of silky, just rendered fat, and exceptionally crispy skin. They roast a whole pig; really the only way you could possibly attain that level of tenderness, juicyness, and crispness at the same time. I asked the waiter if it was possible to order a whole pig (i.e.: for a summer backyard party or something) but I don't think he understood. Sometimes I catch myself thinking about that roast pork... next time, I'll order double, and pass on the duck. If I could leave a zero star I would, I only ordered because my usual Thai restaurant wasn't answering the phone but I should of known better. First when I was placing my order, the person taking to me was talking to other people at the same time so I was very confused, then I gave her my order and asked for delivery, she said it would take one hour, I figured not a problem! My kids were begging me for food! Two hours later the food didn't make it home, and when it did it was cold and disgusting: chicken general tsao had huge chunks of chicken so the sauce doesn't make it to the inside, it was soggy and really didn't taste good. I ordered fried rice for the kids, it didn't have any vegetables and the chicken tasted weird (my son kept On asking me if it was for sure chicken, fearing it was pork) for religious purposes we don't eat pork, then I ordered some Noodles that were so spicy you couldn't eat it and the last dish was tofu with mushroom that was super dry and didn't taste good at all. So after waiting 2 hours I fed my kids plain rice with soy sauce!!!!!! The irony in all of this was for me to take a night of cooking, not to brag but I'm an amazing cook who can pull a whole meal in 1 hour. Never again Great Wall, never. read more

The best authentic Chinese food in western Mass. I have taken Chinese/Singapore exchange UMass students there who were totally critical of Chinese restaurants in the U.S. in general, and they loved it--returning often--saying that it was the closest food to being home. Use their special gourmet menu and start with their wonderful Chef's Special Dumplings . Other favorite dishes include Iron Skillet Scallops , Roasted Duck , Mei Fan Singapore Style Noodles , Salt & Pepper Shrimp or Squid , and any of the daily specials. I especially like the Pan Fried Flounder , the fish filleted, then lightly sautéed with fresh vegetables and served over its delicious crisped bone, with a light sauce. My partner and I are new to Florence and we wanted to try the local Chinese restaurant. I really wish we had read the reviews before stepping foot in this place. We decided to order take away since the restaurant is right down the road. The woman on the phone was short and came off as really rude. I let it go and just assumed that she was stressed and the place was busy. When we went in to pick up our order the weight staff was friendly and greeted us as we came in but the woman at the counter didn't even bother to look up. I paid for the order and we left. The food was nothing short of disappointing. Firstly, my partner's order was wrong. He ordered one of their dinners with chicken fingers but ended up with chicken wings, which he doesn't like. The pork fried rice was flavorless with miniscule pieces of pork. The beef teriyaki was also lacking flavor and was covered in a weird red sauce. I've never seen teriyaki this color before. His crab Rangoon was essentially inedible and tasted way too sweet and artificial. I ordered the salt & pepper tofu and fried vegetable dumplings. The tofu was advertised on their menu as crispy but there was no crisp to this dish. The flavor was good, however, so I will give them that. The dumplings were a bit bland but edible. Overall, I really cannot recommend this place. I do not think I have ever had such a disappointing experience at a Chinese food restaurant before. I've had better food and service in other "hole in the wall" joints. We *might* give them one more shot but it is highly, highly unlikely. read more

Great Wall makes a salt and pepper shrimp with a gluten-free batter. Ten points. They make a divine roast duck that never ends. Another ten points. It has a relaxed, no fuss atmosphere, with hand-written signs advertising specials grown in their own farm that somehow remain affordable. Yet another ten points. I adore the woman who runs the place, and the fact that they've carved out their own space inside a funny little shopping plaza, complete with koi and traditional murals. Go for the menu that you don't understand and you won't be disappointed. It's all food, without the filler, and the fare is consistent. Stop by after yoga right next door at the community center, or after bouldering at the dojo down the street! It's a little bit indulgent, but all delicious. read more

Just moved to the area and started 'the search' for the decent Chinese take out place. The standards my family looks at are General Tso's chicken, chicken fingers, boneless spareribs, fried dumplings, teriyaki beef, and fried rice. Pfft, you say - that's not real Chinese food. I'm Asian and grew up eating lots of authentic Asian cuisine, but I married whitey, so what can you do. Anyway we ordered all of our standards except boneless spareribs. Here's the lowdown: General Tso's - large chunks of flour-dredged but not breaded chicken that wasn't crispy on the outside, and rather dry on the inside. The sauce was watery. The taste was one-note. The lack of the usual chewy broccoli that they throw in the carton is the only plus. Chicken fingers - easily the best thing we got, which should make you worry. Again, really large chicken fingers - more like chicken arms if you really think about it. Well-breaded, crispy/crunchy, moist meat. Fried dumplings - I read on another website how that person's dumpling order was burned on one side and uncooked on the other, and I said 'surely you're exaggerating'. I take it back. Our order was absolutely blackened to charcoal on one side - like someone totally forgot about the order and instead making a new order, scraped the whole pan into the carton. The filling lacked much taste - no scallions or garlic to be seen anywhere. The dipping sauce was watered down soy with perhaps a bit of mirrin and no red pepper or scallions. Teriyaki beef - I've never seen a reddish colored teriyaki beef. Enough said. Fried rice - bean sprouts, some chicken, some shrimp, bits of onion. Nothing much to it. The little carton of plain white rice that comes with the General Tso's chicken came only half-filled. Come on. The search continues ... read more

I headed to the Great Wall Restaurant in Florence hoping for some decent dim sum, outside of Boston's Chinatown. I haven't had dinner or any regular meals there, so the cook-to-order stuff might be much better. Unfortunately, the dim sum was not very good at all. Everything except for two items were served cold -- that means cold scallion pancakes, cold char siu bau (bbq pork bun), cold bok choy...you get the idea. The shu mai and har gao were served hot (probably because the ones we got were at the bottom of the stack, closer to the steam) and were eatable, but certainly not noteworthy. I think I'm going to have to look closer to Springfield or Worcester (or all the way back to Boston) to find a better dim sum place. read more

I love this place! Their special menu is totally legit and their regular Americanized Chinese menu is above par. I am a sucker for dumplings and Saturdays at Great Wall they have Dim Sum. Its not the best - but I have had much much worse in both NYC and SF Chinatowns. The service is always pleasant and they keep the tea coming. They are pretty much the only chinese food that delivers to Leeds- not that I would order from anywhere else anyway. I love this restaurant! 2 nights ago I ordered the chicken and asparagus. It was so good that I ate the entire dish in one sitting. *whew* Started with a seaweed salad. Really good. No surprises. Bright green and fresh tasting. This is our go-to place for take out with an occasional dinner eaten in the restaurant. Sure, the decor may be dated, and the fish tank is a little unsettling - but the food is fantastic. Order from the gourmet menu for dishes that are not fried and have more (and different) flavor. Heard good things about this place so gave it a try. Usually whenever I'm going to a place on a recommendation things don't turn out that well. This is a pretty small place in Florance with there tag sale mismatching table and chair sets. Service is responsive, but should be as it was not very busy on a Friday night. Food is pretty run of the mill type Chinese unless you order from the gourmet menu. You will get a fair proportion and house tea which is one positive. I would recommend take out next time and not order fried food. Butterfly is better and my suggestion for Chinese food. read more

Our party of four had dinner here last night and it was good. Service was fine although the main meal came out immediately post the appetizer and i would have preferred lingering over the scallion pancakes a bit longer before I dove into the main dish. Very original menu with many meals to choose from. All the food was very fresh and well prepared. Portions were genourous and prices reasonable. About six of us ordered Chinese food on a cold, rainy weekday. I ordered the half of a chicken (the ones with shallots and soy sauce on the bottom). They delivered, but we ordered at 5pm. They came at around 7pm or so. I can't blame them - they had a problem finding where we were and also, it was cold out. I'm just glad they made it okay! My food was pretty good - it came with an order of white rice (well-made) and my chicken was amazing. A little bit on the salty side, but very generous portion and tasted pretty good. The only problem was that it just got saltier as time went on, so I had to compensate with copious amounts of rice. However, it was still a good meal. Would I suggest the chicken? Not really. It was made well - cooked really nicely; very good meat. It was just salty. Next time, I should ask to lighten the soy sauce or something. But overall, pretty good food. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with the service. Would order again, though. read more
