    Ma la tofu

2026 Jan 19: 1) fish and chicken mixed ma la pot 2) ma la dry pot tofu 3) vegetables fried Hor fun 4) string beans 5) hot plate beef with bone. 6) farm fried spicy chicken. Best restaurant near UMass Amherst!

Raw pork inside undercooked pan fried dumpling. There were more. But we ate some without realizing.

The service is pretty good. The server is very nice. The food was fast for half (dim sums) - 10 min and very slow (for entrees) - 20+ min. Two big errors. 1) The pan-fried dumplings were under cooked and the pork is raw inside. It's true. I'm sorry. I think they used frozen ones and the pan frying couldn't thaw it. I didn't want to believe it when my guest told me but then I saw it myself (see picture). That was bad. We didn't send it back, but we probably should. Fingers crossed that we don't get sick tonight. 2) An honest mistake happened in taking the order. The food was wrong. It was so late arriving that we are full. Server kindly offered to take it off the bill (the right thing to do in this circumstance). But the manager overruled her and offered either to bring the correct dish in take our container (we were leaving) or 15% off the wrong dish. We didn't argue and just took the take out and paid. I don't think that's the right way to do it for the restaurant. Who'd want 15% of the wrong dish after it's been taken away to the kitchen barely eaten (and now cold). For these reasons, we won't be coming back.

The food was absolutely delicious!! The crystal dumplings are GF and they were such an amazing treat. The Gemini Roll was delicious but it does fall apart easily. The Tokyo Roll is a new "I will order this every time I go there", but unfortunately the cancer roll was very tempura heavy (according my sushi loving cousin). Overall recommend!!

If I were to pick out important memories from my college years, Oriental Taste would be on the list. They have amazing extensive menu that allows for trying something new every time. The atmosphere of the restaurant is robust, lively, and homey. OT is where I like to go the full nine yards--I'm talking drinks, apps, desserts. My favorites here are the flat rice noodles, shu mai, red cooked pork, and anything in the salt and pepper flavor. I'm sad I can't eat here as much as I used to, so please give them my business :)

    Beef Chow Fun

I have never had to add salt to my Beef Chow Fun before... So I'm driving up north for a weekend getaway and I decided I want some collegetown chinese food when stumbled upon Oriental Taste. Upon my arrival to pick up my order, I was surprised with their seating area. Very nice, I would actually sit down and eat here. Only reason I say this is I'll be honest, I thought this was one of those take-out only places at first. Pleasant surprise! However! It was short lived. No utensils or napkins in my take-out bag. Not sure who's fault it was but usually having nothing like this is an unpleasant surprise. And on top of that, I've had the same problem with opposite flavors. By that I mean, I ordered two (2) of my favorite Chinese take-out meals: Beef Chow Fun and Sesame Chicken. The Beef Chow Fun was cooked nicely and all but unfortunately, the seasoning was too light. Bland flavors, I was able to fix the issue a day later when I added salt to it. There was not enough saltiness to it and the whole time I felt like I was eating plain and greasy noodles. Now for my Sesame Chicken, it was way too sweet! It was almost more like General Tso's Chicken that was swimming in that sweet sauce and it just happened to soak up the entire sauce container like a sponge. Maybe that's what it was, the chicken was spongey and way too sweet. It just wasn't good. Fortunately, their service was quick and the restaurant itself earned my respect but unfortunately there were a couple easy to fix yet major issues with the food that I ordered. Hopefully the next time I come around, I won't need my emergency salt shaker that I don't actually have.

Since it is street parking. Difficult to find a spot weekday lunchtime?

Parking in Northampton can be challenging. The parking garage behind thrones is always a good option, as the first hour is free and there is usually parking available there.

It has a traditional looking interior with wooden plaques around. I would have to recommend getting wontons no matter what dish you get, the sauce is so good and we were picking at the peanuts. Half the restaurant seats (the right side) were empty. I was given a small table near the entrance and I asked for a larger table, since I planned on ordering quite a few dishes to try. The maître d' said "No", that they reserve those seats for four people. I completely understand if the restaurant was busy or expecting more people. I said, no, I would be leaving. I was allowed to leave. After all, he had no stake in the revenue. But I hope the owners will take notice of this. You have lost a customer, and likely a repeat customer. In addition, whatever happened to service and accommodating customers, especially when it costs nothing in this situation.

Formosa has an affordable lunch menu, and even on busy days has delivered my meal within ten minutes. Don't be astounded yet, because I would easily wait twenty minutes for this food. When their food arrives from the delicious variety of their lunch specials, you will be treated to crispy tofu, a nuanced spice for chili or jalapeño meals, or fresh vegetables that will make you wonder: who is introducing you to the best cuisine that southeast Asia has to offer? Sichuan meals, Mandarin meals, and even with a Miso soup that is vibrant and delicate in flavor, you may not have any difficulty in deciding at all because any meal you choose will be cooked with what tastes like generations of expertise, love, and wisdom. It is not possible to follow a recipe, or a video, or a shopping trip and recreate the food at the level of Formosa, nor at the price of Formosa, and I say this after years of enjoying their meals. If you are in the area and you are hungry, you will want to visit Formosa as it is an unbelievably satisfying trip for almost any person in the continental USA, and likely for international travelers from near and far. Please tip your staff generously and leave a review to share this love--there is no amount of business they can do that will do the history and delight in their food justice. Their food is accessible to the local public, and they also donate to local causes as well. Amherst has more than universities that educate people here, they have restaurants with generations of stories and wisdom in every meal. You'll be amazed at the silky luxury their hot and sour soup is, with a texture matching the fresh micro mushrooms inside. Be prepared and humble, the staff are dedicated, responsible, and attentive to the public as much as they can. I would love to read a book about the story of this restaurant some day.

Turns out, that was a very apt description. We arrived and got seated at a table with a very nice curved window view. I can imagine being here on a rainy or snowy day and getting to be surrounded by the weather while not having to get wet. The service was friendly, if mostly absent, and fast. This place mostly loses stars on the food. We had: wonton soup, miso soup, scallion pancakes, crab rangoons, happy family, tangerine chicken, and asparagus and snap peas with shrimp. The wonton soup seemed to be a beef broth soup, interesting change up from any wonton soup I've had before, a little salty and good wontons. The miso soup was also a good miso. The crab rangoons were too sweet and the wrapper too thick, thus making it chewy, but at least you could tell there was something in there beyond just cream cheese. The hunt for good crab rangoons continues. The scallion pancakes were very thick, but at least not greasy. The sauce was punchy and pleasant. The asparagus and snap peas with shrimp was positioned as having a light flavor, and that was very accurate. Almost like they were steamed and then served, but you could see a sauce coating them. The happy family was coated in a brown sauce that didn't carry much flavor either, but nothing was wrong either. The tangerine chicken was listed as one spicy out of three, and I'm happy to report they understand spicy rating. While the broccoli was chopped a tad large, the chicken was cooked very well, and you got just some spice on the back end with sweet on the front. Overall, nothing here was bad, but it also came across and middling. If you asked me to write this review a couple days from now I feel I'd have trouble remembering anything about this place except the window seat. I am willing to try some of the other aspects of the menu some time in the future, but I'm not sending anyone running here either.
