I went here prior to a UMass hockey game, and was told ahead of time that it was functional Chinese food, but wasn't going to blow my socks off. Turns out, that was a very apt description. We arrived and got seated at a table with a very nice curved window view. I can imagine being here on a rainy or snowy day and getting to be surrounded by the weather while not having to get wet. The service was friendly, if mostly absent, and fast. This place mostly loses stars on the food. We had: wonton soup, miso soup, scallion pancakes, crab rangoons, happy family, tangerine chicken, and asparagus and snap peas with shrimp. The wonton soup seemed to be a beef broth soup, interesting change up from any wonton soup I've had before, a little salty and good wontons. The miso soup was also a good miso. The crab rangoons were too sweet and the wrapper too thick, thus making it chewy, but at least you could tell there was something in there beyond just cream cheese. The hunt for good crab rangoons continues. The scallion pancakes were very thick, but at least not greasy. The sauce was punchy and pleasant. The asparagus and snap peas with shrimp was positioned as having a light flavor, and that was very accurate. Almost like they were steamed and then served, but you could see a sauce coating them. The happy family was coated in a brown sauce that didn't carry much flavor either, but nothing was wrong either. The tangerine chicken was listed as one spicy out of three, and I'm happy to report they understand spicy rating. While the broccoli was chopped a tad large, the chicken was cooked very well, and you got just some spice on the back end with sweet on the front. Overall, nothing here was bad, but it also came across and middling. If you asked me to write this review a couple days from now I feel I'd have trouble remembering anything about this place except the window seat. I am willing to try some of the other aspects of the menu some time in the future, but I'm not sending anyone running here either. read more

I dined in at the Ginger Garden and started with a scorpion bowl for 1, it was very good. As a starter we had the Chendu wontons, a shaggy dog sushi roll and a spider roll. The wontons were very good, the hot chili oil was loaded with garlic. The sauce was a little salty. For mains we ordered general tsos shrimp, and chicken pad thai. I don't think that I'd order these again. The general tso sauce was pretty assertive and the shrimp overcooked so it could have been anything in there really, the pad thai noodles were all broken and rather clumpy. This has been our go-to place for years. Plenty of parking, easy in and out for my elderly in law, plenty of tables, including larger ones, if you come early enough, excellent service. Extensive menu with Chinese and sushi. Always see lots of takeout bags on the bar near the entrance. The food, on the other hand, has diminished as of late. While never 5/5, it was reliably 4/5 in terms of spicing and consistency. Not so much lately. My usual dish (Imperial Seafood, with a garlic sauce) has lost its zing. My wife has been disappointed in her main dishes as well. Not bad, just not as good as it used to be. Boring. New chef? Portion sizes are still good and the standard apps and sushi are reliable. We'll probably try again and hope things turn around, but they've got to earn back our trust. read more

Overall, there isn't much too crazy to write home about with but all dishes are decently yummy. The prices are a little steep for the quality but in this economy, most prices are. Besides food, the lighting in the restaurant is a little dim for my liking but otherwise fine. There has been a few chefs over the years as menu items are sometimes not exactly the same, but the food and service is always good. Here's why: 1) we needed a pan Asian restaurant that had pad thai for one kid and sushi for the second 2) I needed som gluten free options and ideally a staff that is knowledgeable 3) our waiter was brilliant. Knew about gluten. Brought our kids little chopstick holders. Quickly exchanged the pad Thai when it came out fairly spicy (which was not what a little girl expected) 4) the food was all quite yummy 5) the price points were perfect. 6) it's pleasant space 7) you can tell this restaurant treasures its customers. Yesterday I went here with 2 others. We all got lunch combos, I'll be honest it was awful. My combo included 4 chicken wings, 4 chicken fingers, 1 egg roll, fried rice and a choice of soup. For $10.50 you got a lot of bang for your buck, but did you through? The bang was nasty and was not edible! The ONLY thing good in that lunch combination was the egg roll, loved it. On the other hand the chicken fingers were raw , like when you bit into them, there was so much juice and you could just tell. So, I sent those back along with my aunts steak on the stick. The steak came back fine for her, but the chicken fingers were STILL raw! I didnt eat the chicken wings because they looked conserianly gross. Not to mention both the chicken fingers and the chicken wings were in weird also conserianly odd shapes. The fried rice tasted like dish soap, that's me being % honest. Last but not least, the soup, the soup options were horrible. So, I got the Wonton soup sith no wontons, lol! The service on the other hand was pretty good and decent. Our waitress was very understanding and kind! Overall the food did come out in a decent time, which was nice, but did not fill my hungry belly! The staff treated us very well and were very patient with all kinds of requests based on different diets and allergies. I love Ginger Garden! There is a lot to love about this place, with their miso soup being an iconic dish. I always get the veggie and meat dumplings, with them being very good and also comes with a sauce on the side! I get the chicken and rice with cashews and broccoli. The service here is super great, with the staff being very nice! Inside there is a mini water fountain with Chinese writing above the front door. My friends and I came here after a long morning in school. It was around 2pm on a Saturday and the place was surprisingly not packed at all. We were seated and we had a waiter come by to take our orders almost immediately. The servers we had were super accommodating, prompt with taking our orders, and even asked to refill our waters when our glasses started getting low. Our food came and honestly, they weren't the best. Though two of my party enjoyed their plates, me and another friend weren't a big fan of their sushi and dumplings. For one, the dumplings were super dry and way too doughy. Though my sushi was good, I felt like I definitely overpaid for only 6 rolls. The presentation was nice but I could have paid less for the same dish at a different restaurant. The breadth of their menu and consistent quality (since they opened) is remarkable. The key to appreciating Ginger Garden is to understand what they are and what they are not. I'm sure if you drive 3 hours away, you can find a tiny shop that specializes in a specific dumpling or dish that is better. And yes, there are places whose sole focus is more authentic style regional Chinese food. But Ginger Garden offers an incredibly broad menu including a wide array of "traditional" Americanized Chinese food, more authentic Chinese items, and sushi and Japanese items. In over a decade of eating there, I have never had a bad dish. Everything has been at worst above average and most really good. For a place that's 2-3 hours away from any major metropolitan area, I think that's pretty amazing. read more

If you're looking for Chinese food in Western mass this may be the best place to get it, but this is different from the Chinese food in Boston. They got your usual options but they're just not as flavorful as if you got it from Chinatown. I got the beef and broccoli, crab rangoon, scallion pancakes, and walnut shrimp. there was probably one piece of scallion per pancake which is pretty disappointing, should have just been called a pancake. Crab rangoon was soggy and not crispy good flavor but that's about it. the beef to broccoli ratio was like 1:4, for the price, I would've expected more beef, and the flavor of the beef was kinda bland too. The walnut shrimp was the most disappointing thing there, lacks flavor and was overly oily compared to walnut shrimp in a Chinatown restaurant. Overall I probably wouldn't get Chinese food here again since it's just so mid man. read more

I have been going to Ginger garden many times over the years, and the way they have adapted to Covid has been great. We love the takeout system-- call ahead and pay, then just pick up at the restaurant. And their food is so good. I love their meat and veggie dumplings, ginger beef with green beans, beef with garlic sauce, and they make a mean hot and sour soup. Lately I have been getting the hot pepper beef, which isn't too saucy but has lots of flavor and veggies like green beans, onion, and peppers. I also tried the beef with eggplant in garlic sauce recently-- for the eggplant fan there is a lot of it! Menu is traditional of an asian spot. My gf and I ordered the soup, Tso's chicken and rice, dumplings and spring rolls. They forgot to actually pack the soup, but we didn't notice until we got home. The rice and chicken were solid, but everything else was not good in the slightest. - The dumplings were drowned in sauce and were 90% dough. - They split the spring rolls in half all the way down and put the split side facing down in the container so we wouldn't notice. We have noticed a huge decline in service and food quality. during Covid, we purchased food at least once a week to help keep them in business. we eat there two or times a week. Tonight we purchased a to-go Xmas dinner. they charged us for mustard for egg rolls. They charged us for duck sauce. They charged us for noodles for our soup. They charged us for wontons in our egg drop/wonton soup, but never put wonton in it. if we eat in the restaurant, These items are included. prices Have gone up (I understand that) , portions have been reduced, service is excellent while dining in, but servers seem unhappy. while I supported this business for years, I will not be going back read more
