The food was fine, the decor was very nice, but the service was....the worst I've been treated in all my life. Absolutely ridiculous. Where to start? Well, our server, "Hellen" (yes, with two "L"s), gave us our drink order and then grabbed the drink menu from the table. My girlfriend said "Can we keep that?" - just in case we wanted a different drink later. My girlfriend then asked me if I wanted to keep the drink menu at the table, and I said, "Yeah - but we can always ask for it again." Whereupon "Hellen" shook the menu in her hand and said to us firmly, "Do you want the menu or not?!" I felt like saying to her "Who the h#ll do you think you're talking to?" - but didn't want to make a scene. Next, the only time we saw "Hellen" again was when she took our empty dinner dishes. (There were young guys walking around refilling our water glasses, so no need for her to do that.) We finished our meal and "Hellen" stopped at our table to leave the dinner check. Never once during our meal did she ask if everything was okay. She also didn't ask if we wanted another drink or, perhaps, dessert? (If they serve such a thing.) And it didn't appear to be just us. No one else on either side of us got another drink or was asked how their meal was. It seemed like it was just, "Here's your meal, hurry up and eat and leave so we can clean your table for the next people." Horrible service. Ruined the end of a nice day for us. read more

Came here on a Sunday night around 6:30. It was pretty crowded but no wait. The rolls with salmon were really good and fresh. The tempura rolls were good too but not as fresh. Tempura was a little dried out. Service is great. Servers are fast and friendly, always asking if we needed anything. There's nice outdoor seating here. Good for summer. I do not know why Osaka only has 3.4 stars on yelp! This is one of my go-to restaurants. They have great lunch specials, and their sushi and sashimi is always fresh. Their hibachi is also great. Dinner for two at the Hibachi table. Portion size was very generous (had enough to take home for lunch the next day). The server who took the order had a little trouble understanding English, but the service was very good. They allowed my son to substitute the mixed veg for noodles but charged extra ($2.00). What wasn't especially appreciated, was the 18% "Service Charge" that was added to the bill without notification. I've seen it done for larger groups, but never for just 2 people. Been coming here for decades and I have to say this was a god awful experience, in regard's to our food! We both ordered filet and I ordered scallops with mine. I ordered mine rare and hers was supposed to be medium rare. They got them backwards which was annoying but not the end of the world... the issue was when we got close enough that we could smell the meat; it was rancid smelling! When we brought it to the attention of our server we were interrogated on why we thought it was rancid. After that frustrating experience, they brought out a corrected steak, which was better, but not really we asked for compensation for the stakes which was basically just removed them from the bill. After the manager and the server went back-and-forth for 10 minutes he agreed on a 15% discount. I don't understand why they couldn't just remove the steaks altogether but whatever. In my opinion, I have seen this restaurant going downhill over the last few years and it's sad because it used to be a staple of the town hopefully it improves. read more

Osaka is a Noho staple! They're a great place to come in the summer because they have a huge second floor outdoor dining space. In the winter, they close part of it off to heat for extra seats. It can get busy on the weekends, so it doesn't hurt to make a reservation, especially if you want to do hibachi. They have a huge menu with both hibachi and sushi, and they have plenty of veggie options to choose from! They have a full bar and their cocktails are pretty good. We split tempura veggies as an appetizer. I love anything tempura! I ended up trying one roll with fish and one veggie roll with tofu skin. I loooove tofu skin and thought it added a great texture to the roll. The other roll I got was a specialty roll that had peanut sauce in it, which I loved! I visited my friend in Northampton for the weekend and we stopped by Osaka for dinner on a Friday night. My friend warned me that the food scene in town just isn't especially great compared to Boston. Both of us ordered the udon (one chicken, one veggie). The portion was substantial, but I didn't find the noodles to be anything particularly interesting and the chicken was pretty dry. Not sure how some of their other menu items taste, but I wasn't blown away. No complaints in terms of service and the restaurant itself was fairly nice. We sat outdoors on this deck sort of area, which was a cool touch. Don't think I'd bother to return, unless I was trying the hibachi. read more

Have been to Osaka several times over the years and just recently had a very pleasant, quick hibachi dinner at the restaurant. My husband and I made a reservation (but did not need it as we were dining early and the rush had not yet started). We were quickly seated at the hibachi table and the fun began. Osaka's sushi is great, but we opted for two hibachi meals only. Smart idea because we had a hard enough time getting halfway through our plates the portions are so large. My husband ordered the filet and scallops and WOAH! I do not eat meat, but a bite of the filet almost changed my mind. The scallops, hibachi fried in butter and soy sauce, were the best cooked scallops that I've ever had. My shrimp and vegetables were top tier as well. Service is quick and the grill masters are playful, dexterous, and ultra efficient. We were able to order, eat, and leave within 35 minutes. The space hasn't changed much over the years. It is set high on Old South Street, so some steps are required to make it into the restaurant. read more

We went on a very busy Friday night, it was a bit too loud for my liking. But that's my only complaint. I cannot say enough about the spicy Toro tuna roll. It was absolutely amazing and I had to order an additional one. Another great thing is that the service was amazing and they kept my water cup refilled the entire time I was there. Came here for the hibatchi! We tested out the chicken, steak, rice and noodles :) hibatchi is more expensive but extremely tasty and portions are average to large. Steak bites were large and juicy. The salad was fresh and I loved the tangy dressing! Fire show was extra fun ... (videos attached). Also note but there is a cool seating area right when you walk in! (Photo included) And then they brought mochi for a birthday dessert! Note sure what flavors the mochi were -- colors were yellow and white ... but the chocolate sauce overpowered! read more

It is a little hard for me to review because I have lived in Japan and Taiwan. It is simply done differently there. Having said that it would be, I presume, extremely expensive to do it here. Nonetheless the food is served quickly and all in good taste. Sushi and Tempura were both great. The only thing subpar was the rice. It tastes terrible. The waitresses are great. Fun, good manners and helpful. But they were excited to speak to me in Chinese so that could have altered things. The restaurant itself is clean and tastefully decorated. When you ask your nephews what they would like to do for their next special trip out and they say "Go to Osaka", that's exactly what you do. While at their baseball game, I was able to make a reservation online for when I thought the game would end, and made a note that we wanted to be at the hibachi grill. Easy peasy. There is a large parking lot and parking garage right nearby the restaurant, so even on a busy night like we had, it shouldn't be too much of a problem to find a place to park. We also have someone in our group who is celiac and they have to be gluten-free. They made the entire meal with gluten-free sauce and nobody noticed a difference. Out server was fun and everyone had good laughs. Even if you have been to hibachi once, twice, or 10 times, it's always fun to watch the slightly different things each server brings to the table, literally! I can say, that my favorite hibachi sauce is still Kay's in Westfield, and they are a tad more organized. As the staff were taking our drink menus, they asked if we ordered, and we said yes (or one of the kids said yes) assuming they meant the drink order. Unfortunately, we had not actually ordered our food and staff were walking around thinking we had actually placed our dinner selections for at least 15 minutes before we were able to get somebody's attention. As always, hibachi-style meals all cost about the same wherever you go with the same large quantity of food, so there wasn't much of a surprise there. Both dishes came with miso soup which was a nice touch. Solid food but nothing original. They have a nice wooden indoor seating area complete with a hibachi grill and outdoor covered patio. We started off with some edamame and agedeshi tofu; the edamame was good as usual and the tofu was delicious. Loved the crispy skin and the tempura sauce it came with. For my entree, I got the three roll lunch special which came with miso soup. I chose the Alaska roll (salmon, cucumber and avocado), Buddha's roll (roasted peanut and avocado), and the eel and avocado roll. All of the rolls came with avocado and they were great. Very disappointed. I really wanted to like the restaurant but the food was awful. The worst Japanese food I have eaten. Walking in the restaurant should have been a telltale sign. Not the cleanest or welcoming. The miso soup was cold and bland. I ordered California roll and tuna roll for appetizers- just okay. My tempura udon was the worst - the broth tasted like sink water and had no flavor. It was obvious they did not take any effort to make the dish. Gross. Gross. I will not be returning. My sister, her boyfriend, and I came here for dinner. It was one of the only places that was open on Christmas Eve. We came in and were greeted by so many friendly staff! They sat us down promptly and we were able to order right away. They had pretty decent sushi and other seafoods. I wasn't super impressed though because I could definitely tell they weren't fresh. I rarely bother to review but am for Osaka as I was pleasantly surprised by how amazing their food was as compared to their mediocre Yelp reviews. I ordered miso soup and six piece sashimi plate, and was also given "on the house" a fried fish appetizer topped with masago and tangy dressing. All were amazing! Miso soup was flavorful and full of tofu and seaweed, sashimi was beautifully presented with an orchard, bamboo, all atop a bowl of crushed ice to keep it cold. Cuts of mackerel, salmon, tuna were the largest I've had at any restaurant (I live in and was visiting from San Diego, CA) and instead of six pieces they gave me ten; not sure why but I'm not complaining! We ordered green tea, and we were going to ask what kind, but the servers did not have any interest in answering questions. (It turned out to be genmaicha, toasted rice tea.) Timing is everything, right? Especially when it was a rough-ish day of work, travel and a terrible borderline migraine. Finding a decent parking spot and getting seated at a popular restaurant to start a weekend off can be just what the doctor ordered. We were seated right away since we arrived at about 6pm. By 6:30/7pm...all of the tables were jammed and there was a long line of people waiting to get in. Again....timing! Because we had a show to go to. We ordered green tea, water and a special roll-but modified it slightly: asked for sauce on the side and replaced the soy paper with regular seaweed (for a soy-free experience). The teardrop shaped pieces filled with asparagus, salmon, tuna and a couple of other nuggets were rather big, but good and clean tasting. The rest of the sushi was solid...ikura and uni are usually an indication of how fresh stuff is...and we ordered both. Uni was decent-not the best I've had but passable. The ikura was good, too. Yellowtail roll and tuna roll? Kinda bland. Salmon pieces were Ok; guessing they were pre-sliced (they were a little dry on the edges). Overall, a decent sushi spot. Hibachi is clearly very popular here and the cooked dishes looked excellent. Service was abrupt, not overly friendly...but efficient. Bathroom left much to be desired. read more

Walked into this establishment for dinner and specifically asked about my meal as I am gluten free. I was assured that my order would be gluten free as o have celiacs disease. After my order came out I was confused as my shrimp looked fried and again I was told it was gluten free. After a few bites I asked the waiter to check with the chef and she took 10 mins to return and say it was in fact cooked in flour. They had zero regard for the error on their part and tried to give me another shrimp dish that was clearly the first dish they were supposed to give me. I have never experienced such terrible service as there was no apology or offer to make experience better. And on top of all of this they still charged me for my order. I am a student in the area and a huge sushi fan, this is about 20 minutes from UMass so if you're looking for some good sushi this is for you. It is a serious favorite. They have basic maki rolls to many unique speciality rolls. My go-to is the philadelphia roll and dragon roll. They don't only have sushi, but they also have amazing hibachi and many appetizers. I love the shrimp udon, and everything is really good sized portions. Osaka is a good choice for Japanese cuisine. The meals are a little above average as far as the pricing and there is a bright, social, and casual atmosphere connected with it. The meals are savory with a menu that will appeal to Vegans as well as meat eaters. They are located in a nice spot, right downtown with plenty of parking, close to the restaurant. The restaurant has seating on a porch outside and inside. There is also tables that will accommodate larger groups of people, but I hear they ask that those particular tables be reserved ahead of time. I absolutely do recommend Osaka to anyone who enjoys the Japanese dining experience. read more

Came here for my husband's birthday dinner because he loves sushi. We have tried many sushi restaurants in NYC and didn't have much expectations, but to our surprise the sushi here is outstanding. The sushi was flavorful and fresh. We ordered foxy lady, Nobu roll, fancy roll, jalapeño roll, tomo roll and yellow tail. All of them were good except for the jalapeños roll. Our favorite was the Nobu roll, fancy roll and the tomo roll. We also ordered the Osaka spicy beef noodles and it was amazing. The service was fast and ambience was okay.
