Panda Garden - An Unexpected Gem in the Boonies I was driving back from the Berkshires this weekend, enjoying the beautiful, scenic views, when my stomach suddenly began to grrrrrrowl. I passed a couple of gas stations and a pizza joint, but then--out of nowhere--I spotted a place called Panda Garden. Way out here in the boonies? I thought to myself, I'm kinda craving some soup and noodles, so I turned the truck around and pulled into a quaint little parking lot. To my delight, I walked into a cozy, welcoming Chinese restaurant. I was greeted with warm smiles and promptly seated in a quiet corner. They brought out iced water, hot tea, and--surprisingly--two menus. That caught my attention. Two menus? I've only seen this in Chinatown or in rare spots that serve authentic dim sum. Could it be? I glanced at the regular menu first and placed my order--I was starving. But then I realized I'd forgotten to look at the second menu tucked underneath. I asked the server if I could hang onto it a bit longer. As I flipped through it, I was stunned--it was an authentic Chinese menu, filled with dishes I usually only find in major cities. And the prices? Straight out of the '80s! Seriously, I haven't seen prices like this since high school. For example, Salted Fish & Chicken Fried Rice--something that would run close to $30 in Jupiter, Florida--was only $9.95 here. Seafood Pan-Fried Noodles for $14.95? Wowee. I'm going to be eating here a lot when I live in the Berkshires. Now, maybe it was because I was starving to death, but I swear--this was the best egg drop soup and lo mein I've had in a long, long time. It completely hit the spot and made my stomach stop growling. My only problem now? I was ready for a nap on my long drive home! read more

Great go-to. There have been a few different owners over the years and the place went from good to bad to very bad but currently the food has been consistently good, the staff courteous and the prices low. Their specials are well prepared but some of them need extra preparation so you can expect to have a longer wait for some items they have on the menu. Worth the wait, of course, but I get the impression some of the fish dishes they have start with a frozen solid fish that takes a while to thaw. Otherwise a great place to get cookie-cutter Chinese menu and I think the Chicken Wings are great. Try 'em. read more

Most Chinese restaurants are pretty much the same. The beef is always the same low quality, as most Chinese restaurants. With that said, I still eat it. They need another pu-pu-platter that does not over load you with pork and gives you a variety of the different appetizers. Unfortunately this is all we have for the hill towns. Hope they upgrade because people will pay for the quality. It's not like we can go some place else. read more

Stopped for lunch and though a Sunday afternoon the place was busier than most weekdays, but not so busy that there was a viable excuse for the waitress to deliberately ignore me after trying to tell her three times over the course of 15 minutes that I was ready to order. By the time she once again ignored me and proceeded to wait on others who had just walked in ---- I got up and walked out. This woman was a witch, not a waitress. Until today Panda Garden has been a favorite place for lunch. Perhaps best to avoid this place if there's a chance it may be busy --- in other words, more than 3 tables filled at once. My partner, a chef, heard that there was this wonderful restaurant in Williamsburg, MA. We were skeptical, but decided to try it. I can't even describe how excited I was to learn that they have a complete vegetarian menu with oodles of vegan "fake meat" options -- beef, pork, EVERYTHING. as a lifelong vegetarian, this is heaven for me. And located in this idyllic New England town? Amazing. They got our oder perfect and everything was fantastic. Lots of fresh veggies, but also that decadent aspect as well. I live close to Panda Garden, and even if it's not my favorite restaurant, I'm glad it's there. I just wanted to write a few things here for the potential customer: - Somehow they have two websites: pandagardenma.com, where it would seem you can order online (I've never tried); and pandawilliamsburg.com, which is the right site to go to, to read their menu. This is because it features the next thing: - The Gourmet Menu. It seems you might have to ask for it when sitting in the restaurant (not sure), because it's a separate physical menu I think, and contains an additional interesting array of items. A fan of spicy/Sichuan things at other restaurants, I tried and have now three times ordered the Sichaun Wonton with Red Oil. Weirdly, the third time, I think they gave me the Wonton with Sesame Sauce. Who knows whose fault, whatever, moving on: - Chicken with Spicy Sichuan Sauce. We liked that a lot. There are peanuts, hot peppers, it's good. Conversely, be warned: - Ma Po Tofu. A Sichaun dish I've enjoyed elsewhere. However last night, I tried it to go, and arriving home I saw it has green peas in it. Weird, and, I'm actually allergic; just be warned. Doesn't seem it usually does have peas, right? That's it! Give it a try, or don't, but it's there, and I'm glad because there's nothing else in Williamsburg, and I am often too exhausted to make something interesting for dinner! Beware! This place went down hill quick! We waited over an HOUR for out food and got attitude from the person answering the phone when we asked for an update. They refuse to give change back. They say it is automatic tipping for them. Also they repeated the order back when we called and they got it WRONG when we got it home after an HOUR wait! Ouch. This place has gone down hill. I went in during lunch time recently and ordered 3 meals. Lunch prices were ~$6.95 but they didnt mention this to me and charged me the dinner price, $10.95. The "pork fried rice" had very obviously been mixed with plain white rice, which I found to be very strange. I mean, how hard is it to fry up some rice? The "boneless rib" was so gross that I fed it to my dog after taking one bite. I tried the sweet and sour chicken and was very, very sick afterwards. I had to lie down for a few hours before I felt better. I'm bummed because I've had good experiences here in the past. Won't be giving them another chance due to how sick I got. Panda Garden is a very good Chinese restaurant, especially given its location. For a small town like Burgy, it's great. If you're expecting high end, artsy, froofy Chinese food, this isn't your place. If you're into a list of combo specials that include good variety and great quantity at a good price, well here ya go. My vegan daughter loves the fake chicken fingers here which is a plus but last night I stopped by around 4 for an order of Hunan Chicken using the online ordering system. This place is fantastic! Tons of vegetarian options. The rice was fresh and sticky just like it should be. Their spring rolls are fresh made, not frozen from the food supplier, and they weren't greasy. The dumplings steamed and fried were fantastic. The combo meal selection is great. Always fast delivery time, and the food is hot and fresh when it gets here, which is 15 minutes away. This place is excellent. It's very authentic Sichuan cooking. We ordered the roast duck and they prepared it in the traditional Beijing way. Tip: eat it with your hands and dip it in the sauce at the bottom of the bowl. We also had the Sichuan shrimp and it was fantastic...spicy, savory and delicious. We will definitely be back. I love this place. The food is excellent and the service is fabulous. You can have traditional Chinese food or the typical menu. My favorite is clams with black bean and basil, so delicious. Panda Garden is now under the management of the previous owners of what used to be Butterfly in Hadley, MA. In addition to "Americanized" dishes it should be noted they have a traditional Szechuan menu as well as a vegitarian menu - just ask. This previously mediocre Chinese place has become wonderful since taken over by the former owners of Butterfly in Hadley. The Gourmet menu has delicious dishes from several regions of China made carefully and without the sweetness which plagues many low calibre places. The homestyle dumplings are great. The Szechuan dishes have some real heat and complexity and the whole fish preparations are standouts. read more
