Hummmmmmmm. I'm not really sure how to rate Lucky Kitchen. It's one of those things you have to just experience yourself. Location: **** 4 stars: right off Berkshire Avenue. Free street parking. Walkable from my house. Ambiance: * 1 star: plasticky booth seating, thick security bars on the windows, chintzy 25c vending machines from the 90s, dimly lit, vaguely reminiscent of something from a back-alley in NYC. Odd shelves filled with cigarettes, Swisher Sweets, and other cigarillos [is this legal?]. I asked for one, and she said they were "old" and if I wanted to buy a cigarillo, I'd have to go across the street. Things that make you go "hmmmmmm." Service/Wait Time: *** 3 stars: not bad. I ordered and was out of there in 10-15 minutes (did not call ahead). For large orders, I'd definitely recommend calling ahead of time, to give them notice. There were two children working (?) there, though I think they were the woman's kids. It was a bit... uncomfortable. The woman was polite and quick; I believe she was also doing all of the cooking. Menu: *** 3 stars: very large extensive menu. They have lunch and dinner combos, which to be clear, comes with 1 of the many choices of sides they have listed (egg roll, hot and sour soup, wonton soup, a can of soda, etc). That wasn't understood just by reading the menu. Everything is very reasonably priced: we got 2 dinner combo meals, which has been enough for 2 people to have at least 3 meals out of. Food: *** 3 stars. To-go food was nice and hot-- even after walking home in the cold for 15 minutes! My beef and mixed vegetables combo dinner was tasty, with a decent amount of meat in there. Jamie's beef teriyaki looked like something out of a crime novel: they put wayyyy too much of that red goopy sauce on it. It looked like beef jerky covered in blood. Bleh. However, we both agreed that the soups were pretty amazing; I really enjoyed my hot and sour soup. I'd go again, if I'd been drinking and needed walk-able dinner. But there's something more than a little bit shady about Lucky Kitchen. Detective Lindsay, on the case.

Hong Kong Garden is one of those hidden gems that I've been coming to for over a decade whenever…read moreI'm in town, and it never disappoints. The fact that they aren't listed on the big ordering apps just adds to their charm and you know you're getting an authentic Chinese take-out experience. The restaurant is run by a lovely married couple who are both incredibly efficient and friendly. What really sets them apart is their personal touch. Even if I disappear for a while due to work, they still remember me by name whenever I return, which speaks volumes about how much they care for their customers. The food here is fantastic. My go-to dishes are the chicken wings and the egg foo young. They are always perfectly cooked with amazing flavors. The shrimp with broccoli is also done very well, with fresh, crisp veggies and plump shrimp, and their crab rangoons are some of the tastiest I've had in town, crispy on the outside with a creamy, flavorful filling. Every dish I've tried has been made with care, and you can taste the quality in every bite. One thing I really appreciate is the convenience. There's a large parking lot, which is a huge plus in this area, and the restaurant is located in a plaza with some shops, so you can walk around and browse while you wait for your food. If you're looking for a consistent, family-run Chinese restaurant with great food and welcoming service, Hong Kong Garden is it. I can't recommend it enough for some good old American Chinese take-out!

I have never been so disappointed--the only items that were still good were the wings and the egg rolls were in fact better than I remember. The Mongolian beef (which is my favorite Chinese dish) was awful-I ate one bite and could eat no more--it had an odd taste which was not pleasant. All fried rice (I had ordered a number of combo meals)-was hard as a rock (one could have gotten a broken tooth due to the hardness of the rice)-the rice had no flavor. The pork chow mein had hardly any pork. The shrimp with lobster sauce--the shrimp was not in one solid piece but soft without flavor. The teriyaki sticks were thin and hard in the middle. Nothing satisfied--I had spent $109 and most of the food went in the garbage can after one bite. WORD TO THE WISE; IF YOU CRAVE CHINESE FOOD, WATCH A YOUTUBE VIDEO AND MAKE YOUR OWN. I am so psyched I actually found a good Chinese restaurant in the Chicopee/Holyoke area. Beef with…read moreBroccoli was great. Broccoli and carrots fresh and crisp. Beef was delicious as was the sauce. Won Ton soup was excellent too. Great broth and won tons were tasty. Even the white rice was well cooked, fresh tasting and not stuck together as you're dishing it out. First Chinese restaurant I have tried in area I actually will be ordering from again. Highly recommended.

My local Chinese restaurant in Holyoke, with an unjustly low rating at the time of this review…read more This is a no-frills establishment that carries a large menu of standard-fare American Chinese food. However, the quality has been exceptionally good, especially in the last couple years since there appears to have been a change in management. The portions are generous, the meat and especially the vegetables aren't overcooked (a problem I've encountered at some other places), and the staff are friendly and professional. Is it greasy? Yes, though not nearly as much as some other places around here. Is it healthy? Probably not, unless you get one of the steamed vegetable dinners in the "healthy section". Personally I don't get Chinese food for my health; my personal favorite order is the dinner combo plate with chicken and broccoli and fried rice. Comes with an egg roll and tastes perfect every time. The timeless General Tso's chicken is also a treat. I've been here enough that a year or two ago they even gave me a free tote bag, which is among my most cherished thing-holders today. If you live in Holyoke, forget the middling rating and give this place a try. It's a great place to have in the neighborhood.
