There was a great variety of pickled veggies: lemons, kimchi, jalapeño, broccoli, ginger, radishes, cucumber and sprouts. All worth multiple trips. Super appreciative of the delighful waitress. She was very attentive and knowledgeable. My son ordered a tofu dish and she asked if he was vegetarian, then explained the broth process and was very helpful in suggesting delicious vegetarian options for him. I placed an order for pick up and arrived on time only for them to tell me, "oh, the sushi chef did not show up. Do you want to wait?" I asked how long the wait was and the lady told me that he was not answering his phone... she expected me to wait until he picked up and then came to work, did his prep work and THEN made my sushi. You run a sushi restaurant and you can't even make sushi?!? I asked why she didn't call me and she said oh, I wasn't thinking... seriously ?? We would come here regularly if we lived in Dallas! Came in today (a Friday evening) around 8. Plenty of spaces to sit down. We quickly realized there was only one waitress for the entire restaurant. And I don't think there were too many cooks in the back either. Service was a little slow but to be expected with the number of staff however our waitress was AWESOME. She was super bubbly even though I could tell she had her hands full. She was in charge of taking orders, seating people, bussing tables, refilling the apps station, etc. and for her to still be so cheerful I give her lots of kudos. We told her it was our first time so she explained the menu to us and pointed out that there was a picked apps bar in the front. We LOVE sides. The iced green tea was also fantastic. I must find out the brand so I can get it. We got the regular udon, beef bulgolgi, and 6 piece dragon roll. Everything was good. Nothing insanely outstanding but we would come here again. It satisfies Korean/Japanese food cravings. Prices were inexpensive. Our meal came out to be about $30. Lots of parking available. We also like the atmosphere. Awesome quality sushi, rolls, and sashimi. Setting is fairly low key, and seating is a bit cluttered, ordering can even be a pain on the arse. But the cost more than makes up for the little quirks. Brought my family here a few times and have always loved the food. Wonder what is good here? Well, this is one of those times where anything you order is going to be good! My wife and I love the seared Tuna salad. The Tuna is always cooked perfectly. The atmosphere is nice. I like the privacy of some of the areas. Recently we had invited another family and had the front kids room for ourselves. Tip: bring a coloring book to keep the kiddies occupied. Fortunately for us there was no one else there so the kids could play a bit in the restaurant. Which brings up another positive: It's rare to find a gen like this and not be crowded all the time. Always go to the irving location since it's close to my job. But when I passed by this location I knew I had to give it a try . The rollls were awesome and so were the side dishes. My favorite is the caterpillar roll and the shrimp tempura roll, as well as the Kentucky roll. And you can never go wrong with the good ol California roll. It is bigger that the other location and more chic. I felt a bit odd being the only customer there during dinner but I'm sure business will pick up and be less lonely. I consider myself to be and avid sushi cone suer. The atmosphere is fine when you walk in and there is a warm greeting from the sushi chef. However our waitress was absolutely cold and off putting. Her demeanor was completely lifeless as if to question why we where even there. The Goya was a revelation! Crispy and consistent! The sushi was on time however the roll was not tight and the flavor profile just did not have it. Not the best place but of course it's not the worst. We may give them another try but we are not going out of our way to do so. read more

I thought I was pretty familiar with all the restaurants off royal in this area but I was wrong! Missed out on a gem until now. Maki Boy first off let me say is adorable, the decor is interesting. A random assortment of knick knacks and Christmas lights and minions (lol??). There's booth seating that is very private, each booth has a small lighting set up that looks like a fire place. The restaurant is a Korean-Japanese fusion restaurant that does it well for pretty cheap. There's a small bar for banchan and the veggie sides were pretty tasty (sprouts, kimchi, radishes, cucumbers, nicely seasoned broccoli--seriously the broccoli was the best). The servers are pretty attentive and accommodated my friend with a shellfish allergy with their sushi order. I ordered japchae which was pretty good, never had it with broccoli sans zucchini but still tasty mix of veggies, meat and noodles. The udon/sushi combo is also supposed to be great. I'll update with more info on dishes when I go back bc I definitely am swinging by again. Apparently they usually end the meal with a smoothie of some sort or green tea ice cream but that wasn't offered this time sadly. Will be back soon! read more

After a day at King Spa, me and my friends dined at this little restaurant and enjoyed it thoroughly! Cute place, I have an odd thing for Christmas lights as decor. Had the nigiri sampler for only $13ish. Worth it! I like that they have a complimentary Korean side dish bar that you can serve yourself. Everything is very affordable and food is good! They serve Japanese and Korean food. I'd def come back when I'm in the area. A lot of other stuff runs around $8 - $16 and service was good. Give this place a try if you're curious! read more

This was my second time at this new Maki Boy location and I was impressed! The food was really good as always. I got the chicken cutlet which comes with the salad and white rice. The waitress brought us all a small smoothie dessert for having to wait a little while. The wait was not long and totally worth it for the excellent food, but it was still a nice gesture! The décor is really cute and the booths with high walls are very private. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. This will definitely be a regular spot for lunch for me and am so happy they opened a location closer to where I work. But if you are in the Irving / Beltline area, try their other location because it is also a hidden gem! read more

Prices are comparable to my favorite sushi place in Dallas (Mr. Sushi), but the selection is poor -- fewer roll options. Makes me nervous that they don't have their sushi chefs out in the open, especially when the sashimi arrives dry but is sitting in a pool of clear liquid after being on our table for about 5-10 minutes. I've never seen that happen before. This place was DEAD on a Friday evening, which makes me wonder how often they get fresh shipments of fish. The atmosphere also is really weird; I can't believe people haven't mentioned the bizarre collection of Broadway-style stars hanging from the ceiling or the fake, purple-flame fireplaces in the individual booths. The waitress brought us little plastic chopstick helpers; I guess because we're Caucasian, she assumed we didn't know how to use chopsticks? There was no sign of the complimentary shakes that other reviewers have mentioned. Sushi plates arrived with tasteless wasabi cream (did we get the watered-down Caucasian version, I wonder?) and no ginger; you had to get your own ginger out of a communal bin of pickled vegetables by the bar, which I'm sure was clean but just didn't really give off a super clean or well-maintained vibe...made me a little nervous. Overall, Maki Boy definitely did not live up to the hype from Yelp. Maybe it's a better spot for a cheap lunch? With high expectations about this place I walked out with not so good thoughts. First off, the service was pretty bad being opened for a couple of months.. the service needs to take a notch up. The food wasn't bad but it was decent for the price. The interior of this place is quiet messy and all I could think of was why did they put that there? I ordered the daily special bento which comes with a small portion of fish, one tempura, 5pcs of roll, miso soup, 2 baked mussels and rice. The price is $8.50 and the portion size was not huge. Pretty much like eating a sample of everything put into a bento box. The service was horrible! We had to wait a long time for our food to arrive. The lady who was serving us seemed to be in a bad mood. We asked for a small veggie roll and she comes back with the 12pc roll. You can get 6pcs or 12pcs for most of the rolls. The server didn't ask us if we wanted 6 or 12pcs... When she brought it to us we told her that we ordered a small portion. She literally said "Do you want me to take it back and bring 6pcs? There isn't a big price difference between the two and 12pcs is a lot cheaper." I've never worked in the restaurant biz but I don't think that is what you say to customers. Anyways I left her a nasty tip which pays for her nasty comment. I thought this location would be a whole lot better than the one in Irving but I guess not. read more

Worth your money sushi! I've had my eye on this place esp since I live like 5 minutes away and i'm glad that I finally got to try it. Majority of their rolls are different versions of the regular crab imitation roll but I'm not complaining! My favorite so far was the shrimp tempura roll, be sure to get 12 pieces, it's HUGE. I found this place on Yelp, and there are several things I like about it. It's not noisy, it's not expensive,and it's GOOD. Excellent sushi rolls, and you can order a 6 or 12 piece roll (great if you can't or don't want to eat a whole roll). Now, having said that, I tried the Korean Beef Bibimbap and also the seafood soup and they were also quite delicious. You can also get a sushi entree (5 different pieces) and a soup/sushi combo. There's a free appetizer bar as well. Nicely decorated with lights and lanterns. Individual secluded booths, with a central seating area, and also bar seating. The waitress there is very friendly, recognizes her regular customers, and remembers their preferences. This is my favorite for sushi in this area. read more

(Their hours are incorrect online, they are only open late on Friday-Monday! Their pricing also does not seem to match up with the menu, and each menu has varying prices. Maki Boy has always been in our list so we found time to drive to this location. The place is unlike any Japanese restaurants we've visited. It's quite the trendy hipster-magnet place. There are high-walled booths, which I don't really care for, but would probably be good for people who wish for some privacy when they eat their sushi. The food is delicious. Special mention to the ramen and the shrimp tempura roll. The service is great. Good place to go to if you have a hankering for rolls and hot soup. read more

The rice was mushy; thank god I only ordered 6 piece. What upset us was the volcanos roll that took 20 min. We couldn't believe what we saw. A hot mushy mess of a sushi roll. The scallop was cold?! Was they just now thawing it out?! The suave, what the hell did I put in my mouth? Disgusting. The rice was Super mushy!! Was so disguised by the volcanos roll we left. Came here a few times before today and just to let everyone know, this is a pretty good place to eat especially as a somewhat healthy dining restaurant. I always get the eel donburi to-go but decided to eat in with a friend for today. Antmosphere is very calm and quiet like a cafe. I recommend you know a little bit of Japanese food dishes because the portions are not going to be that big so do not expect much food when getting your ordered dishes.
