The staff worked efficiently, were very kind, and were also really knowledgeable about the menu, which made ordering easy. Let me start off with what I usually order: - Tako Wasabi - like a MUST!! - Karaage w/ Tartar sauce - Beef Tongue - Takoyaki - Salmon Rice sandwich - Tonkatsu Ramen If I feel like it: sashimi. I came here at least 3-4 times with friends and with my boyfriend. I love this spot, but because the seats are limited, expect wait. Very small place, maybe 5 tables. We got in line 10 mins before 5 on a Thursday and barely got seated. They seated us at a corner so we can put our baby carrier. No room for stroller at all. Service was very nice. Everything is small plates, no entrees. Food was 4/5. Nothing stood out. I think the only hit was the Kobe beef skewers but so tiny. Sashimi was great and fresh. The pan fried pork belly has good seasoning but quite salty. We took it home to eat with rice. Pork cutlet was very dry. Wings were dry too, not juicy. Tonkotsu ramen tasted good and salty too. The servers were nice. I do think they expect you to know your order already to make a quick turnaround since there were constant ppl waiting at the door. The restaurant was busy and I loved the vibes of the place.... except the receptionist What stopped me from dining was the absolutely distasteful attitude and behavior of the receptionist. I walked up to the reception table like the signs says (and with her gesture too!) and I'm asked if I need anything with a face and vibe that said "what do you want from me". Uhmm... a table? I waited a bit to see that maybe its just me and I presented myself wrong. Nope, she was equally rude presenting to everyone that came in after me (which is a +1 for fair rudeness i guess). Mmmm so easy to see why this place is so popular! Went 10 min before they opened and we still had to wait in line fortunately we had to wait only an extra 30ish minutes. They call you a little bit before your table is ready so you have time to head back if you left the lot. The food is sooooo good. Tuna sashimi was so fresh and the grilled mackerel was buttery and smoky. Beef tongue was grilled well too, wish it was topped with some more salt but just a personal preference. Mr. Max is a hole in the wall, but some of the best ramen I have ever had. The noodles were chewy and soft, the broth was rich and flavorful, I got spice added and it was the perfect amount. You do have to take shoes off here just fyi and the place is small so there will more than likely be a wait time but so worth it. I came here five minutes before their opening time of 5:00p.m. on a Friday night and there was already a long line. I was lucky enough to be the last one to get a table on the promise that I'd be done in an hour and a half because they have that very table reserved for another group. Obviously the entire izakaya was filled to max capacity as were the last ones seated. We ordered two Asahi draft beers and a bunch of food. The dishes that are must tries are the crispy rice, beef tongue, ginger pork, Taiwan mazesoba and squid with guts. I didn't think the two desserts were anything to write home about. However, I would say the outside of the building does not look pleasing however it's not the outside. It's the inside counts. I went with friends as we arrive. We were greeted at the door. Ever since this place was featured in the yelp top 100 it has been a nightmare to eat here. You would have to book weeks in advance. Recently they moved their reservations online but I haven't used that system yet. I ate here before they opened their new location and it was amazing. The dishes were authentic and the appetizer prices were very reasonable. Also, despite it being completely packed, service was attentive and friendly. It was giving family friendly bar vibes which was perfect. If you can get a reservation here (3 person minimum) I definitely recommend it. It's my favorite place in DFW for Izakaya. Mr Max is good but due to the social media exposure it's become harder and harder to find a seat. You literally have to show up before they open and wait in line. The food is great. It's mostly made by Japanese people so you can call it "authentic". You do get many choices that are available at izakayas just like in Japan. I particularly like the "Shishamo Smelt Fish", I think I order it every time. The "Pan fried Squid w/ Salt Butter" is my other favorite. Both of these dishes are great with a bowl of rice. I LOVE this place! The food is a 10/10. I just wish they took reservations for parties of two -- they only accept them for groups of three or more. It gets pretty crowded around dinnertime, even on weekdays, so plan accordingly! The takoyaki was the star of the show. I've had a lot of takoyaki in my life, and this was by far the best. When it came out, it was so fresh and hot that the bonito flakes were dancing on top -- a fun little moment. The veggie tempura was also a fun surprise -- they tempura-fry hearty chunks and slices of onion (which I loved as an onion fan!). One note: once we finished eating, it felt like they were gently nudging us to wrap up, which I get since the seating is limited. Definitely not the kind of place you hang out long after your meal -- but that's part of the charm. It's cozy, traditional, and efficient. We ordered a variety of dishes including takoyaki, yakitori, and karaage. Everything was delicious. Tasty with a lot of classic Japanese flare.
