On a recent vacation to Vancouver, my hubs and I drove up to Squamish on our way to visit a friend…read morein Whistler. It's only our second time here but it still has a great, kick-back vibe. Of course we had to stop by our favorite cafe and donut shop, Fox & Oak. Love how they have a good variety of vegan and regular options for the donuts (they have gluten free too). I am not vegan but I can't digest milk protein well so I am always looking for dairy-free and vegan options. We got a vegan cinnamon sugar donut, regular passion fruit donut, and vegan apple fritter with raspberry icing to go. While at Whistler, we broke out all three and shared them before having lunch at Hunter Gather. All the donuts were delish!! We were all impressed by how fresh and soft they all were. Also, I didn't think I'd like the apple fritter with raspberry icing that much but I ended up liking it the most! On our way back from Whistler to Vancouver, we couldn't help it--we stopped and got two more donuts! Yep, it was a double donut day. I am not ashamed to admit it. Don't judge me until you try this place. Thank you, Fox & Oak!

    1. These are probably the best donuts we've had in British Columbia and also very good espresso…read more They also have excellent vegan donuts. 2. There was a line but it moved pretty quickly. Once we tasted the donuts and coffee we understood why there was a line. 3. We liked sitting outside where you had a nice view and could enjoy the sun.

    Red's Bakery - Nanaimo Bar

The best Nanaimo Bar we ever had. It was delicious and to die for!…read moreMy sister bought some extra take back home (Toronoto). They are still delish after couple of days.

I heard from multiple sources that Red's Bakery serves the most mediocre Nanaimo Bars in Nanaimo,…read morebut since we were in the area (and a couple of other places were closed the day we were in town), we decided to walk on over. Red's has a kind of small town bakery feel, with old-fashioned almost eclectic decor, perhaps 60s/70s retro. Unlike some of the other bakeries, they prepackage some of their desserts in plastic, so it's difficult to tell how fresh they are. I suppose Nanaimo Bars keep well in the first place. We ended up trying Nanaimo bars from three different places, with my notes for Red's as below: Nanaimo Bar ($6) - This Nanaimo bar is much taller than the other two, probably around 50% taller than bar 3 and a full double of bar 2. It cuts very smoothly without much flaking off. The crumb base underneath is smooth, indicating that the coconut fibers are well blended to reduce strand length. It's almost like an Oreo base, with heavy Dutch processed cocoa flavor. There should be nuts mixed in, but they are crushed so finely that I can't really tell what nut is used. People on social media complain about the bottom layer, but I actually love it. For the other layers, the top icing is really sweet. It has a heavily roasted chocolate flavor and by far the darkest in color. The middle layer just tastes like standard icing. It's sweet but I think less so than the other bars. (4/5) Interestingly enough, I enjoyed the Nanaimo Bar from Red's more than both other bakeries. I think it's pretty good in quality and while sweet, has the heavy cocoa elements of the cookie base to help balance things out a bit. Washroom - I didn't see any available for customers.

Neate Donuts - Dubai Chocolate Donut

This donut shop balances indulgence with actual flavor so perfectly…read more The Chocolate Glazed is a masterclass in restraint. It has exactly the right amount of sweetness - it's rich and satisfying without being cloying or giving you that immediate sugar crash. The glaze is smooth and deep in flavor, making it an easy favorite for someone who wants an amazing treat that isn't over-the-top. A couple others that are worth trying: - Coffee Crunch: if you love a bit of texture, the crunch on top is incredible, and the coffee notes are bold enough to cut through the sweetness of the dough. It's basically a breakfast dream in donut form. - Blueberry Yogurt Mousse: this one feels almost sophisticated. The mousse is light and airy with a nice tang from the yogurt that complements the sweetness of the blueberry. It's refreshing and a great pick if you want something that feels a bit more "elevated" than a standard glazed. The dough across the board is clearly fresh and has that perfect pillowy bounce. The quality here is unbeatable. Definitely worth a visit.

Some custard and cherry filling on the inside and chocolate shavings on top. I would have liked to see less chocolate shavings and some more cherry filling inside, but otherwise it was quite good. I also liked the sprinkled donut. It wasn't too sweet and the donut itself was well done. It was soft and fluffy with a good chew. The blueberry stuffed donut was delicious. Not too sweet and the donut itself was delightful. I was so excited when I saw that they had carrot cake donut. Not a lot of places make make carrot cake loaf anymore so this seemed to be a unique twist on the pastry. It was moist and had light icing
