Going with 3 stars today. We come here once a year when we're in town visiting family. I also grew up in Iowa eating Maid-Rites. Today, my Super Cheese Rite was served not hot and not really warm. The meat was slightly cool. It definitely didn't melt my cheese. I ate it because it wasn't horrible. I did mention it later to staff in a constructive manner. We also got a slice of cherry pie to go and plan to enjoy that later tonight. read more

Open in 1928... it's rare to see a business last that long these days. Food was delicious and fast. No tipping accepted! Cash only, but there is an ATM there to withdraw cash if needed. Big parking lot next to the building. read more

I love this place. As a kid growing up in the Quincy area Maid Rite was famous. Upon my moving back to the Quincy area, Maid Rite was the first place I visited. I was not disappointed. The food is exactly what I remembered. I am very thankful that there is still a Maid Rite here. read more

Ahhh, Maid Rite. It'd been a minute since my last visit (which, undoubtedly, had been in some Iowa gas station). This, however was the full-blown "Maid Rite experience", in a long+time freestanding restaurant. It was exactly as expected; friendly counter girls, seasoned wait staff and an atmosphere that looked like it had gotten lost in the 60's. In other words, it was wonderful! I had two Maid Rites that were freshly maid, hot, and tasty as hell. Skipped the sides, but I had an ice cold Diet Coke which went down smoothly. I wish I had tried one of the pies, though. They had around 8 types available and they're freshly baked in house (or nearby). Just as I remembered it, it was a delicious lunch! I'm craving another visit but, alas, there are no locations in Florida and Iowa isn't on my radar in the near future. Too bad... I could be a regular! read more

Maid Rite is a step back in time. I don't know how to say it any different so let me explain. The menus are on the old push in letter boards, you place your order where it is then written on a brown paper bag with your name, the order is shouted out so the cooks can hear, the total is tallied by hand and a chart is referenced, for tax you pay in cash only and your change is reverse counted back to you, your order is bagged and your name is called out. Once this process is completed you sit and enjoy the exceptionally prepared food. And by all means, try the pie! Maid Rite is truly an experience that just happens to include great food. read more

My family practically grew up there, as a kid I often watched the guy as he cooked the loose meat, added water and mustard and diced onions and a little ketchup and even pickle relish. He cooked in a deep stainless rectangular pan over a burner. We usually ordered two Maid-Rites with cheese and diced onions and pickles and mustard. Sometimes with fries, sometimes with onion rings!! I think the relish and its juice he added was responsible for the excellent flavor!! The sandwiches were on buns, the meat went on using a perforated stainless spoon, then wrapped in waxed paper. Iowa chain with an "old time-y feel", that specializes in ground beef sandwiches. All of the people working there when I went were old women, which added to the "old time-y feel" Sandwiches come in 3 sizes, and with the option to add cheese, pickles, and onion. I got the medium size with all of the toppings and it was delicious but very messy, as most of the meat fell out of the sandwich. Have a basic diner menu with other options as well, including a wide range of sides. I got sides of French fries and cauliflower, and, to my surprise, the cauliflower was fried! My husband use to eat here years ago, not very good anymore regret going here today, since i have never been here cant say i have anything to compare but i know i will not be going back. For zucchini they give you four little chips and they didn't taste very good, the maid rite sandwich was slider size but for the price you should get at least 2. Made Rites are their own food group. You can't go wrong there. They don't take debit cards and normally Id throw a fit about it, but I'm glad they don't take them there. They add up your order on pencil and paper. I always get a $.50 piece in my change. Service was fast and of course the ambiance is late 50's and an important part of my childhood memories. I mean, if you've never had Maid-Rite and you're in these parts, it's kinda a must try...if for nothing else to say that you have. Imagine a sloppy joe's with no sauce, add some onions and pickles and you have a regular Maid-Rite. You can add cheese if you'd like. Nothing fancy - both in terms of food or presentation - but hits the spot when you're hungry. The best thing I tried on the menu was actually the fried cauliflower (which I think has a little cheese in it?). The food is basic, the service is basic (no tipping!), and the prices are ok. When you walk in it may seem like you walked into a diner in the heartland of America circa 1950. Some of the employees may have been working here since then too. read more

Rode my bicycle over to this diner after hearing many great things about it, and that it was on a couple of Food Network shows. The Maid Rite and some crinkle cut fries will run you just shy of $5, add an ice cold Dr. Pepper, and you have soared to a total of $5.72 for lunch. Expecting a sort of Steak and Shakeesque burger with the loose beef, I was surprised and delighted when it was more like taco meat, but of the delicious variety. The waitress pointed out that this Maid Rite, was not part of the franchise, but locally owned...that was all I could gather about the originality of the place. Well we came with friends to pick him up. Our friend heard this was a cheap place to eat to we tried it. Well it won't be my favorite. Ok sandwiches. We went after the morning lectures at our Spring Meeting of AGS. There were 8 of us and they handled the group pretty well. I think every one else had the loose meat sandwich and they seemed pretty impressed. I had the Pulled Pork and cole slaw. This meant that I was served first, by a long time. So long I think I was done when the rest of the food arrived. The cole slaw is $2 for a decent sized scoop in a plastic container. I really liked it. I like creamy slaw. That is what I had. The pulled pork is excellent, the sauce did not really do it justice. I will admit there are three and I may have made a poor choice. I ordered smokey there two other kinds a sweet one and a spicy one. It wasn't bad just the pulled pork was nice and smokey and obviously just made. The sauce was cold in plastic container. If you're looking for a Quincy classic then look no further. This is the place where your great great grandma parents probably ate at one point. This is a relic of the past that should stay for a long time to come. They specialize in what's called a loose meat sandwich. They are extremely delicious specially if you get cheese and order them extra "wet" . And their fried food comes out very consistent they don't over cook or under cook . If you grew up eating here, you probably have fond memories of Maidrites. If not, I would skip this place and try somewhere else. The food is okay, but the portions are small, the service is slow, and they don't take credit cards. Nostalgia is the main thing on the menu here. If you feel like you must have the Maidrites experience, then get it to go. Your food will be freshly prepared and you can avoid the slow waitresses. They write your order and add it up on the same brown bag that you take your food home in. It's cute. I prefer the BBQ place that they run on the north side of the parking lot. I grew up on Maid Rites (I'm in my 60s) ..Maid Rite, yellow mustard and one pickle chip..We spent hours and hours trying to recreate them and still believe that it simply has to do with the little square pan being seasoned by a million pounds of Maid Rite Meat. Going home to Quincy thus weekend after 35 years..Lunch will be a couple of Maid Rites!!! There's still one operating in Cedar Rapids that may be older.
