Mahogany Builders recently gutted and rebuilt the 10' 4" X 81 6" Master Bathroom in my condominium. If I had to do it over again, I would still hire Mahogany Builders without hesitation. With the exception of the shower glass, bathroom mirror and stone, all workers were employed by Mahogany Builders. Workers were on-site Monday - Friday 10 hours per day with the exception of Christmas week. The main folks assigned to my project were NOT working another project concurrently. I saw (and photographed) the progress that was made each day. All the people assigned to my project were professional and respectful. My new Master Bathroom is gorgeous and I LOVE it! This company might be amazing but my experience, not so much... I called requesting a quote on a fairly straightforward bathroom remodel. My call was promptly returned. The designer scheduled time with me roughly a week out, but had to cancel (day of) due to a valid emergency. I still considered everything good to that point and I completely understand that things come up/plans change. Absolutely no issue there. He called to reschedule a couple of days later and when he came to my condo the following week he was knowledgeable and professional, sharing some good ideas in the 30-minute visit. I was looking forward to doing business with MB at that point. The designer said that I could expect a quote in approximately 1-week. I called just shy of 2-weeks later to follow up and he said that he was wrapping it up that day after receiving some info from my condo association. That was April 26th and that's when I received the last text or communication. Bottom line, I suspect that my job might have been too small for them although no one ever said that. I could have saved the time I reserved for two appointments (the original and the rescheduled) and sped up the process of getting a comparative bid from elsewhere. I suspect this is a great company based on reviews but I think that a potential customer deserves the courtesy of the promised quote or a simple heads up that the project is not of interest. That's really nothing more than common courtesy. I followed up once but I refuse to chase a company that doesn't want my business. Why not just say that to begin with? read more

I live alone and trust the workers to be in my condo while I'm at work all day. They have the utmost respect for my belongings. I completed my kitchen well over a year ago (fantastic!), and when they were done I mentioned I wanted to do my bathroom someday. Every few months someone from Mahogany would contact me about doing my bathroom. Because my schedule was flexible they worked me in as a "filler job" (or maybe I made up that word) and I got a bit of a discount! I was thrilled to be working with the same carpenters/plumbers/painters again. They are so friendly and do really great and fast work. And Sarah is a pleasure to work with, and very responsive. She helped with things that were above and beyond what she needed to do (design, picking up a shower curtain for me, etc). I'm saving up to do some work in my bedroom now! read more

We recently worked with Mahogany Builders for a home remodeling project which included redoing the entire kitchen, as well as two and a half bathrooms. Owner Matt is a really nice guy, extremely detail oriented and a person always striving for perfection. To be honest, sometimes I think he loves my house more than I do, which is a good thing from your contractor. His estimate was right on target for a large project of this scale, which we appreciate very much. The team he had were all hard working guys, honest and super helpful. They listen to your needs and take care of them as fast as they can. I especially enjoyed working with designer/project manager Sarah. She is the "go get it" girl and no fuzz. She understood what we wanted and tried everything she can to keep us in budget without sacrificing style. Our entire house turned out better than I can ever imagine and I feel extremely confident in their quality of work. We echo the friend who recommended Matt to us, if we ever want to build a house from scratch, we would like Matt and his team to do the job. read more

I recently had Mahagony redo my basement after it flooded. Unfortunately, the experience was a nightmare. We had the initial meeting to start the project 10 months ago and the work still isn't finished. In the end, I had to fire them and find a new company to finish the work. In our first meeting, I was promised a design consultant who would also act as project manager. In reality, I was the one who acted as project manager. The designer was incapable of organizing the project into a cohesive timeline--consistently doing work too early that we then had to tear up and do again later. I was also told that I would be billed weekly in an effort to nip any billing differences in the bud. In reality, over the 10 month project, I received just 2 bills. Inevitably we disagreed on the bill and it took over a month just to sort out the billing differences. There were several things that were in the initial design, but not included in the initial billing estimate. Part of the renovation was to include turning a walk-in closet into a wine cellar. They assured me that this was something they had done before. But when it came time to do it, they didn't climate control the closet at all. The walls had to be taken down so insulation and a vapor barrier could be added before putting the walls back up. Eventually I got a bill credit for the work, but these are things that anyone who has built a wine cellar should know. Now some of the above problems could be worked through, but what drove me crazy was the lack of communication. I work under the assumption that in a professional setting, you have 1 business day to respond to any correspondence. Instead, when I would call or email them, I would consistently have to wait 3-5 days before hearing anything back. I would also send an email with 3-4 questions in it and frequently get a response answering only one. This gets immensely frustrating when you immediately respond and then have to wait another 3-5 days to hear back. In the end, I had to get the CEO involved because it was the only way to keep the ball moving . To be fair, the work that they did actually finish seemed to be of good craftsmanship, but it was not worth the hassle! read more

My washing machine malfunctioned and flooded two floors of my house. Matt sent his team over right away to dry out, remove, replace and paint the ceiling and affected areas. They arrived right on the dot at 7 am ( WOW) and worked without a break through to 4:30 pm. Genial, professional and expeditious. I especially appreciated how they hung plastic to keep dust out of the rest of the house and left my house cleaner than it was before they arrived. My mother in law was visiting and she wants to send them to her house! No question I'd hire them again, though next time I hope it's not because of a flood... read more

Owner Matt is very friendly and professional, as are the people who work for him. I had them come take care of a project that was somewhat of an emergency and they were fast, careful and reliable. I had Mahogany estimate, help design, and rehab both my bathrooms and my kitchen over the course of the last 9 months. In each case, I discussed with the owner and their designer what I wanted and had them take the rooms down to the studs and rebuilt. No plumbing, gas lines or basic electrical configurations were changed. Rebuilding bathrooms included installing electric heat mats under tile flooring, tiling a good portion of the walls, installing fixtures, fans, can lights, sconces and painting walls. Rebuilding the kitchen included straightening/leveling the floor and a doorway, installing a tile floor, a new island, cabinets, fixtures, can lights, under cabinet lights, 2 pendant lights and new stove and fridge. Member Comments:Not only would I use this company again, I already have plans to. What went well: I chose Mahogany from Angie's List because of their reputation for quality and delivering on time within budget. I was willing to pay more for this, especially given that I had never done any remodeling before. Matt and his staff provided very helpful recommendations, including knocking out one wall to open up the kitchen, putting in a small island, lighting design, kitchen and bath store, a kitchen designer at a home improvement store, tile companies, and a company to cut and install granite. Each time, at my request, he enlisted his designer to help me make choices that would work well together. Once he has enough information about the work to be done, he provides labor and materials estimate range, minimum to maximum. The work came in within range all 3 times and within schedule. The only deviations from schedule were those created when fixture and cabinet companies delivered late. Mahogany was flexible about those situations and worked out schedule updates promptly. The same crew worked on all 3 rooms - my understanding is that if client and crew work well together on 1 job, they bring them back for others if possible. The crew were punctual, cleaned up well, respectful, very congenial, did a wonderful job in all areas and came up with helpful recommendations on the job. Mahogany even requested that my last invoice payment go to a charitable cause they recommend, rather than to the firm. Wonderful! What could have gone better: I would prefer to have one main medium of communication: phone or 1 e-mail address both for Mahogany and for me. Because we exchanged all of them, each of us at times sent messages the other did not get or know to read. If you really want a particular detail attended to, be persistent. Some of my requests for the second bathroom were agreed to up front, but I never got them, sometimes even when asking about it more than once. If you have a design or installation question or concern, do contact the owner. I made of couple of decisions talking to the crew and the results, while still lovely, were not what I thought I was getting (language constraints). The granite company that Mahogany recommended screwed up the countertop measurements, visibly damaged a cabinet during the first failed installation and stuck me with a countertop cut we had not agreed to, and made very poor offer of compensation. I informed Mahogany of the fact that this company damages their reputation if they continue to recommend them (Mahogany does not contract, hire, manage them, the home owner does). I know the owner talked to his contact there, but I sincerely doubt it is any incentive for the granite company to improve service. read more

I would highly recommend Mahogany Builders. The owner, Matt, is very hands-on and accessible if you have questions. He and his crew are extremely professional and trustworthy. We had a bit of an emergency and they were immediately willing to help. They are friendly and also very respectful of your space. Our project required sawing and painting and they cleaned up so well that you would never know they were here at the end of the day. I cannot say enough positive things about these folks. read more

We recently had our kitchen tiled and chose Mahogany Builders to do the work. Simply put, we could not be happier with the job they did for us. The price was right, the workmen were courteous and professional, and our finished kitchen looks beautiful. Matt, the owner, came to our home and reviewed the plans with my husband and myself before they started the job. Not only was special care taken to understand exactly what we wanted, insightful suggestions were offered to ensure we would be happy with the finished product. We received a courtesy call the afternoon before to let us know what time the workmen would be arriving. I thought the call was refreshing in this business, and a nice touch. The workmen arrived right on schedule. They covered the floors and countertops to keep everything clean. I was pleased to see that they did all of the sawing of tiles outside to avoid any additional mess. The job took three days, and after each day of work the workmen cleaned up and removed all the paper so our kitchen was usable. During the project, it was determined that a different type of grout should be used on our tiles. Since we had already purchased the grout and would have to buy something different, I thought this may lead to a short delay in the project. I was pleasantly surprised to find the workmen would still be there first thing the next morning (arriving on time with the correct grout) and would finish the job that day. At the end of the day, our kitchen looked fantastic. I thought that the words "painless" and "construction" could not be used together in the same sentence, but I'm happy to be proven wrong. These guys did a wonderful job on our kitchen and have even managed to renew our faith in the construction industry. I would highly recommend them and will definitely use them again for future projects. read more
