This may be lengthy, but I wanted to write something I wish I could have read to save me some time when I was finding my solar installer. When my family decided that we were going to go solar, I did my homework. We wanted to own our solar panels and not pass along all the tax credits and long-term cost savings to the solar company. I researched local and reputable companies who would install in the Sacramento area and came up with Capital City Solar, Sungevity and Magic Sun Solar. I set up consultation appointments (sending all of my electric use for the last year) and received quotes from each of these companies. The first two consultations were in person with Capital City Solar and over the phone with Sungevity. These two meetings were very similar in the systems that they pitched to me. There was no getting up on the roof or taking any measurements (for Sungevity, he was just using Google Earth). A few days after the consultations, I had another meeting to go over their quotes and my different options. Neither of these companies mentioned microinverters and both had a built-in cost for replacing the central inverter at year 10 in my long-term cost and breakeven calculations. The costs were higher than I expected considering I had an ideal south facing roof and our electric usage wasn't very high. Sungevity's first quote to me even had half the panels on the east side roof with plenty of room left on the south! Then came the 3rd consultation with Oscar from Magic Sun Solar. My wife, kids and I felt comfortable with Oscar right from the start and his pitch was much different. He wasn't pushing a specific panel like Capital City Solar was with the SunPower. He walked through the whole process, Magic Sun's business model and how it makes them different than other companies. They are a small and local company and this is what they do, they install solar electric panels and they are very good at it! They have the process streamlined from the quote to the permits to working with the electric company to install and the monitoring. He also had many different financing options available to help us own the solar if we needed that. Oh and micro-inverters! Magic Sun Solar was the only company I met with that installed their systems using micro-inverters, which is a much more efficient and effective inverter than a central inverter (Google it!). Oscar went into great detail about net metering and time-use rate schedules and how you can have a $ surplus at the end of the year true up, even if your panels didn't out-produce your actual usage. Oscar got up on the roof, took a bunch of measurements using his fancy tools and then said he'd be back in a few days with some different options for us. Oscar came back a few days later as promised with some different options. He didn't know it at the time, but he had pretty much already sold us during our initial meeting and unless his prices were outrageous, we were hiring Magic Sun. Anyways, his prices were NOT outrageous! In fact they were around 30% less than his competition for comparable systems! And best of all because of their business model, they could start the process right away and get permits and everything else ready for an install in just a couple weeks! Wait, so we get a more efficient system, streamlined processing and installation, production guarantees, free Enphase monitoring all for 30% lower cost? Yep, that's Magic Sun. I'll be short and sweet on the install, because that's just what it was. Cameron and crew showed up right on time at 7am on the install day. They were all polite, friendly, professional and obviously very good at what they do. Like I said, these guys just install solar electric panels and they are good at it! Our 4.2 kW system was up and running by 2pm that same day and my meter was spinning backwards. Amazing! Our install was in Oct. 2013, so it's been a little less than 6 months and so far we have produced 135% of what our estimated production was. Oh, another thing. The referral program is for real folks! A $500 check to you for every person you refer that gets a system installed (and a $500 discount for their system)! We have already received our first check and are working on our 2nd! Keeps getting better and better. Long story short, do yourself a favor, save time consulting with other Solar companies and just call up Magic Sun Solar, get your system up and running with a first class operation, help save the world and stop paying your electric company! read more

We have been causally researching solar for several years. With the latest PG&E problems earlier in the year, we decided that we better take a more serious look at solar. We knew after researching that we only wanted LG panels bc of their excellence warranty. As we started making phone calls and asking questions, anyone that seemed like we were interested in, we would come back to Yelp and look at their reviews. In this day it is rare to find a business that has a 5 star review and so many reviews! I honestly figured it was probably all the people that worked there that gave them the great reviews. In March we finically called to see what they were all about. They were pleasant and said they would send someone out to speak with us in our home. My first comment to my husband was, "great we get to meet with a high pressured salesman in our home, we've been there and done that over the years and it's never fun". The day of the appointment came and my husband and I discussed having an out, to get the pushy salesman out if needed.....WE COULDN'T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG. Adlai was the representative that visited us in March. He was friendly, knowledgeable, respectful, and came prepared with everything we had questions about. We told him we would need to talk about it and wouldn't be making a decision on the spot, and he kind of chuckled and said something to the effect that he didn't expect us to. He said he would email with some follow up information the following day, which he did. There was no doubt that this was the company we needed to do business with. We were scheduled for mid May and Tanner and crew showed up on time, were clean, professional, and knowledgeable. They had our 3400 sq ft house producing solar energy within about 6 hours! We have had a lot of experience with contractors and rarely will you find a crew that arrives when they say they will, does a clean job, takes ALL the trash with them, finishes on time, and doesn't ask for more money. This crew was all of this, exceptional! They also handled all the permits, and the red tape with PG&E. Adlai made a return visit after we had some time (about 6 weeks) to use the system. He brought all the warranty and user information in a binder. It was like seeing an old friend, and we were like kids with a new toy showing off our new PG&E bill (less than $5 in JULY!!!). When I moved from Roseville Electric to Rocklin and I got my first summer months electric bills I was more then blown away. How could electricity in Roseville be 1/3 for a nearly identical house compared to Rocklin? I had written off solar because mathematically it was impossible to make it work....I figured it was a solution for do-gooders, not the fiscally responsible. Then PG&E introduced themselves to me and I found their math to be even more impossible to make work. Welcome solar! Hello do-gooders! For me, purchasing solar for the home is something that requires a tremendous amount of research and study in regards to learning the different systems, how they work, and how providers are providing a 'service'. How else can one compare? I knew many friends who had solar and gave me referrals. I also watch a lot of MSNBC, so I was VERY familiar with Peterson Dean. However, not a single solar company from any of my referrals called me back. The only response I got was from Peterson Dean (PD), thus, they were my only quote. The process is a fairly long one, so I signed up and vowed to go find more quotes. As my only cold call bid, I picked Magic Sun based on Yelp reviews and all the good things people had to say about them. Oscar came out right away and was extremely helpful, and even had demo product to show me. Their quote was almost identical in PD, but one less panel. That was curious. So, more research. What I found out was that the PD equipment was basically top of the line 2007 technology at 2014 prices. Magic Sun's proposal consisted of the latest panels and microinverters. I quickly cancelled PD and signed up with Oscar and Magic Sun. I was happy to be supporting a local business, but also had reservations they could be gone tomorrow, as a small business. The process was flawless and well managed. They handled everything turnkey for me, even the PG&E process of getting on the grid and cut over (which was something PD wasn't going to schedule). The install was a single day. I was making power and they even managed to put it in a more efficient spot compared to PD's proposal. I would recommend their service to anyone. Avoid the roof leasers, and the larger robo-solar companies. Stick to the good local guys and you'll be happy you did. read more

I met with several companies, mostly local and one national. Oscar from Magic Sun Solar was the last person I got an estimate from, and after meeting with him, I needed look no further. He was very knowledgeable about the equipment, panel placement, managing PGE connection, etc, and was very responsive and patient with all of my questions. Magic Sun uses top rated products, yet provided a significantly lower quote than the other companies we interviewed. Also, they completed all the paperwork, including permitting with the County, getting HOA approval, and managing the net metering agreement with PGE -- there was very little for me to do. Install was done very professionally. I was concerned about having a very clean install given the design of our home, and they did a great job, even using a black racking system to better match the panels and our roof. What's more, they replaced a few roof tiles that had been previously broken and which would have been difficult to replace once the panels were installed. Regarding service, when there was a minor issue with some of the panels connecting wirelessly with the system, they immediately identified it remotely, reached out to us, and corrected it. Bottom line, if you're considering installing solar in this area, you owe it to yourself to talk to Magic Sun before making your final decision. read more

Choosing a Solar company is not easy these days. There are many companies who are willing to take your money. My wife and I had four Solar companies come to our home to educate us on Solar technology. After hearing each of their pitches it was an easy decision, Magic Sun was clearly the best company. Oscar was our sales rep. Oscar was knowledgeable, understanding, and simply put a awesome person. He took his time and made the Solar buying experience a unexpected pleasure. These guys are the best! Very hard working, genuine, great bunch of people! At first, I was a bit worried about signing a deal with a company that I had not any business before. But, the sales person - Adlai Outa - was just awesome. Walked us through the options and did what we requested him do. We had asked him to gives us a quote for small, medium and large installation so that we can pick one from those options. It was fast and easy with Adlai. The installation was completed in a little over 5 hours by Jim and his dedicated team. They quickly walked me through system operation and confirmed that the solar was connected to the PGE grid. The cost was very competitive and I felt I got a very good deal. After they did the solar, I also had more electrical work done by them. WE got 5 quotes from Solar companies for a ground mount Solar system . We decided on using Magic Sun Solar due to cost & comfort with the Company. They explained what we needed and how everything would work. Magic Sun Solar Installed a 10.1 k.w. ground mount system for our home in March of 2015 .We had been averaging $3500 a year PG&E bills. Oscar the sales person said we would just about eliminate our bill with the system they designed .The job went great couldn't be happier. Now 11 months later we have a $288 credit with PG&E. I turned off my gas heat in the house for this month and are using electric heaters to heat the house so I can use up most of my credit before the end of the year "True Up " happens.So instead of paying $3500 to PG&E ,they are going to owe us money.
