Rudeness & Ignorance at the Madrona Bar & Grill On July 6, 2023, I enjoyed a delightful afternoon with my visiting guests at the Madrona Barr & Grill, where the food was superior and the service was excellent. I have an emotional support dog, for which I have complete documentation, and she wears a service jacket. As we walked out, the manager stopped me and loudly announced, "The owners said you can no longer bring your dog here." I explained that I require my dog to help diffuse extreme anxiety. I also noted that I patronize the restaurant frequently, without previous problems for the last several years. The manager remarked, "I don't remember you. The dog's service coat says 'Please Pet Me'' indicating that this is not a real service dog. We do not allow emotional support pets in our restaurant." Then she promptly showed me the door. Now I realize a business can refuse service to anyone for any reason. However, for the following reasons, I find this interaction unacceptable: * My friends come to Orcas Island for the sole purpose of visiting me. They were embarrassed and uncomfortable. The episode ruined what could've been an exciting dining experience. * How dare this establishment declare that my disability is less crippling than any other type of disability. * This supervisor denigrated me in front of other diners, ruining their meals too. I could choose to return to the restaurant without my dog, but why would I patronize a business that does not want me there? read more

Amazing location sitting right on top of the water. Food was fine l would say middle of the road. Service was on island time until they wanted to close. We had a 730 reservation and while waiting for our wine to be opened our server told us the kitchen closed in 7 minutes. Once they turned off the open sign service was prompt and they wanted us out. They were taking reasonable COVID precautions as were the patrons. I think l would return for a cocktail maybe not dinner. read more

We ate here last night to celebrate New Years Eve. We were seated a few minutes late for our reservation, no big deal. Once we sat down is when the disappointment started and never ended. We tried to order crab cakes - sold out. Tried to order bruschetta - don't have that. Tried to order crab bisque - none of that either. However, they did have gumbo instead which is not on the menu. The waitress then suggested the coconut shrimp so we ordered those to start. They tasted great, the 4 shrimp that we received. We then attempted to order dinner... NY steak - oh sorry, I just sold the last one. They did have pork chops - not even on the menu. We both settled for the linguine. We started to eat the pasta and oh my gosh... the salt... it was so salty that we could barely eat it. We could only eat the seafood that was in it because the salt was unbearable. When the waitress returned to see how our meals were, I told her very salty. She apologized and said she would give us 50% off of our bill. I'm assuming that was her best option because they didn't have anymore food in the kitchen to take back the pasta and make something else? We received the check and she told us she could only discount $40 because that it all her manager would approve of. Okay... so we left hungry. Wishing we would have stayed at the bar we were at before dinner and just ate bar food. Very disappointing. To the employees working last night, especially the manager who seated us... it would have been so much better to have been told you did not have many items from your menu left to chose from. Being transparent with your customers is so much better and the continuous let downs we received. Had we known prior to being sat, we would have chosen to go somewhere else. Not only did we not get to order one item of the menu we hoped for, even expected to be able to order, we didn't even eat what we did order because it was awful. And the bill was still $100 before tip. Again. Very disappointing and we will not be going back. read more

We stopped in on a whim, without looking up the menu or reviews beforehand and we were so pleased we did. We got there very early and were first to be seated so no issues for us on wait but it did fill up very fast so get there early if you're not down to wait a bit. Wow this view from this place is amazing! The service was suburb and the food was all delicious. We ordered a BLT, burgers, and kid meals, everyone was very pleased by their choices! While the venue is cute, quaint and waterfront.... the food and service is cold, uninspired and frankly.... deserves better. The menu had the basics for a waterfront bistro.... crab cakes, crab bisque, wood fired salmon, burger, flank steak, cod, fish and chips plus a variety of salads plus a full bar with fresh taps. Pretty good menu set up IMHO. However, the hostess was cold and seemed put out by us not having a reservation, the table service was really slow (15 min from being seated to being asked for a drink) and the food.... well a mixed bag. Partner had a flank steak served with a cube of potatoes au gratin and side of green beans. He rated it average +, with the plus being that they cooked it medium rare as asked. I ordered the mussels which were described as in a white wine cream sauce with toasted bread. Mussels were in a super curried sauce with some limp pita bread and over HALF of the mussels were the unopened (FYI: Unopened mussels are poisonous mussels). Not only was the dish half edible, the curry was not expected and not desired and should have been called out in the menu. Super bummed that this cute place on the water didn't live up to the menu.... I suspect if you were looking for burgers and a beer you would be happy.... but the other food seems like they are phoning it in. read more

Warm, cozy ambiance and a beautiful view of the water make this a great spot for lunch or dinner. And best of all, their menu has one solid vegan option, if you make a few modifications: Guinness Roasted Portabella sandwich, minus the mayo/butter, and substitute whole grain bread for the brioche bun. The portabella mushroom itself has a rich, hearty garlic flavor, and the sandwich is nicely rounded out with some red onion and a hefty amount of spinach. The generous serving of fries are tasty and perfectly crisp, too. The only minus I'd give is that this is the only vegan option. Their veggie burger has egg in it. It would have been great to expand into other parts of the menu. Hopefully in the future some more vegan options can be made available? read more

This view made working not as painful. We had the fish and chips and salmon burger for lunch. Both lunch items were delicious. I enjoyed a cocktail and an amaretto crème brûlée. The brûlée was ok and nothing special but satisfied a sweet craving. The waitress was very American in the fact that Americans eat their meals very rushed and want to turn tables even in a 75% empty restaurant. So that pushiness wasn't appreciated but honestly with the world's current xenophobia who knows if she wanted me to leave earlier because of being Asian and being xenophobic. Who's to say if it's being American or xenophobic. Maybe being American is being xenophobic. We appreciated that this establishment was opening when many on the island was closed due to winter and the unexpected snow that hit. read more

This rating is based on the absolutely delicious food at Madrona. The clam chowder is amazing. Their fish and chips (my husband ordered) were fat chunky pieces of fish cooked perfectly, and the French fries I swear are made with kennebec potatoes- so good! I had the seafood linguine which was so tasty I ate so much more than I should have. How do you say no to salmon, oysters, clams, and scallops? Staff is nice- all wearing masks and doing pandemic protocol. Not a cheap place to eat, but the food is worth every penny. read more

The winter season doesn't offer much dining options so we walked into Madrona to grab lunch since they were open. Naturally, there was a wait so we walked outside to take photos and pop into one of the nearby stores. 20 minutes later, our table was ready. Our server was friendly and courteous, and our food came within 20 minutes. We ordered the Fish n' Chips (Alaskan Cod served with slaw and fries) - perfectly cooked along with crispy fries. We also ordered the Madrona Burger (7oz patty) with bacon - a bit under-done. The Fish Sandwich (Alaskan Cod) on a brioche bun was very good. The food was exceptionally delicious here. The only reason for the 4 stars is because most of the staff wasn't friendly to us. Our waitress was super nice but the hostess and other help kind of looked at us and didn't smile or seem nice. Also, some of the other restaurant goers that looked like locals stared longer than they should have at our table of 5. Not sure if it is because we are Japanese (?!?) but we were not underdressed or anything or making much noise. Also, my entree came with bread slices and mine came out without bread. When I asked for the bread the girl acted like I ate it and was asking for more. Um, our food was just delivered to our table! Rude much?! The crab cakes were the best crab cakes we have ever had! This place is so awesome. Amazing views right on the water! My boyfriend is a caesar salad snob & has turned me into one, and I can honestly say they have the best caesar salad I've ever had. I almost ordered a second one to go but we had to catch a ferry. We had fish salmon fish tacos (it was the fish of the day) and they were also insanely good. Nice ambiance and service , but do everyone a favor and take the fish tacos off the menu. Chunks of dry fish, a sad orange mayo standing in for chipotle, the barest whisper of avocado. It's my husband's birthday. Enough cooking and eating at home. So, we decided to eat at the Madrona Bar & Grill in Eastsound, Wa. I remember the yummy clam dish, the coconut prawns and that they make a great Caesar salad. I know what I want! My husband won't have a hard time ordering because there is sea food there! And, we haven't been there in probably 3 years since the pandemic. Yay! We're going out! What a disappointment! The coconut prawns were not very coconutty and the prawns had no taste. The Caesar salad didn't have any taste either. I added salt and I asked for lemons - they brought limes - and still there was barely any taste. And soon, the lettuce was very limp. The waitresses didn't care, btw, that my food was tasteless. No offering a different dish, no looking into why the Caesar dressing was so lame. Still, we decided to order a dessert. Sounded interesting: Amaretto Brule. I don't know about you, but, I expected that the custard would be laced with Amaretto. Nope. The custard was the usual. So, I asked wasn't this supposed to be Amaretto? "It is. It's the cherries soaked in Amaretto." "Oh, those are cherries!" These two tiny tiny 'cherries', half the size of a small marble represented the Amaretto. Oh please. And the least they could have done is put a candle on there somewhere cuz they knew we were celebrating my husband's birthday... Or even maybe they could smile? Not a happy staff at Madrona Bar & Grill... at least in front of the customers. We will not be returning, and especially about 20 mins after we left, I started having a stomach ache and indeed got home in time for you know what - starts with a 'd' and ends in 'a'. Not going back there ... ever ... and when I shared this experience with some friends, they all agreed - from their experience - not a place to go eat. Nothing like a beautiful view and delicious seafood dishes for lunch! This restaurant is a little gem in Orcas Island with an entrance tucked further from the street. We found this from sitting at the chocolate shop across the street and thought wow, we have to check it out!! My coworker and I were here for a business trip. We both shared the Dungeness Crab Cakes. She ordered one of the more savory bacon burger while I feasted on Pan Seared Scallops and a cup of Crab Bisque. Food was great! The Dungeness Crab Cakes has a nice aioli sauce and huge pieces of crab inside! Must get. Comes with 2 pieces for $14 I believe. My coworker had a burger that also included a side of fries, salad or garlic fries. She of course chose the fries to go with her colossal burger! It's a great day as far as how full you'll get after eating one. My Pan Seared Scallops were cooked perfectly! The 4 pieces of Scallops was served on a mushroom risotto with a balsamic vinaigrette sauce which added some tartness and variation to the dish. I highly recommend this fabulous appetizer to share or as part of a meal. The crab bisque soup was served with oyster crackers and fresh pepper by the waitress. Everything went well for lunch. We even topped it off with a Blondie Brownie (I think that's what it's called) which has a white chocolate macadamia filling inside a warm brown and served with vanilla ice cream. Definitely couldn't pass that up! Too bad they ran out of this New York cheesecake chimichanga roll dessert. It sounded super yummy! But all in all, service was prompt and attentive. The food came out at a timely manner and prepared nicely for lunch. I would definitely come back to visit when in town. My only criticism is how cold it was inside the restaurant and wishing the server came back to give me more hot water for my tea I finished. read more

First off, everything in the menu looked and sounded so delicious. Don't think you could go wrong with anything you ordered. Went on a Sunday evening just after 5PM, most tables full. Great service, sat right away outside on the deck, very attentive staff. Had our order in within 5 mins of sitting down. My first visit to Orcas Island will be forever marred by my experience at the Madrona Bar & Grill. We arrived at the restaurant around 2pm and asked the waiter Marc D the approximate wait for a window-side table. He said it could be anywhere from "5min to an hour b/c unfortunately the human nature is very real in the restaurant industry." I wanted to be added to the wait-list, and there was 1 table in front of us for the wait-list. Because I was hungry, we decided to be seated based on the information Marc gave us. However, within 5min, 2 tables opened up, so I asked another waitress (no name tag) if we could be seated by the window, but I was told that "b/c you have been seated, it's policy to stay seated b/c it would take too much time to clean" (though I only observed a casual wiping down of tables, chairs and condiments -- not anything above and beyond usual cleaning). I was so upset at this time, so my friend approached our waiter again and asked to be seated by the window. By this time, another table had been assigned for the window, so he said if another table opened up, we would be seated by the table. He also added that he "gave us a choice to be seated at the window by being on the wait list or be seated at an available table, and you've made your choice," indicating we've sealed our fate by choosing an available table, which in retrospect, we were first offered the bar and not the next-to-the-window-table section. I did not see any posted policy indicating that once seated, we must remain seated. What upset me was within 10min from our initial seating, and within 5min of our request to be re-seated, not 2 but ALL 6 window-side tables opened up, and Marc NEVER came back to offer to re-seat us. Instead, I felt trapped by his placing our food down on the table. The rest of the meal, our waiter never checked in on how our food was (fries were over-salted so we had to chase him down to request new fries, the chewy-tendon-filled $18 steak was barely 3.5in x 1.5in, so not enough to share; I was still hungry but by then wouldn't want to spend another penny on this place!), if we needed any thing (which we did, we had informed that we are eating family style when we ordered, meaning to share all food, but we had to get up to ask for extra plates and steak knife), and Marc had assumed that we wanted our salad, an appetizer, to be served with our steak entree instead of asking us our preference. The sad part was, I observed the two waiter and waitress behavior throughout our meal, being chatty and friendly with other patrons, asking about their day, their views on sports and the weather, and we never got so much as a what brings you in today? or how's your visit to Orcas been? Toward the end of the meal, our waiter even said, "I'm very good with the COVID cues, you guys must be wanting your checks." No, actually, we were being considerate to don back our masks after we finished consuming our food and wanted to sit and chat. Why Marc couldn't have applied his awesome skills and knowledge of his patrons and helped us with a clearer answer when we asked how long he estimates the wait would be? We didn't even have time to marvel how quickly he evolved from the mansplaining about human nature to exalting himself to a connoisseur of human behavior in restaurant settings. He was that quick with the check! So either I've just met a very complicated man that I myself might have misinterpreted or misunderstood, or I forgot to bring my glasses to see invisible ink or hidden posted policies, or I've just had my first racist experience at the Madrona Bar & Grill. I've requested to be contacted by someone from management, and while their website promised someone would get back to me within 48 hours, it's been 6 days. This place doesn't care that you're treated badly! read more

Found this place walking on a Thursday night just getting in from the ferry. The only thing this place seems to have is an INCREDIBLE view! Waited for a table to be cleared and got a table in the corner overlooking the water, just awesome. Waited 10 minutes to be greeted for drink order, waited another 9 minutes for drinks to arrive. Great opportunity to see what we are getting ourselves in to by reviewing YELP! After waiting soooooo looooong for drinks decided to pass on eating. This place was our go to on our week long stay on Orcas. We had dinner there 3 different evenings, and the food did not disappoint. Great selection of cocktails (try the mai tai) with tables lined along the window to give you some great views. The fish and chips w/ house made coleslaw and tartar sauce were incredible! We stopped by mid afternoon on a Thursday in late July and there was no wait for a table for a late lunch/early dinner. It was a very warm day, so we chose to sit inside - out of the sun, but with a nice view of Eastsound. We were thirsty and Hazel did a great job keeping our water glasses topped off! My husband ordered a Madrona burger with a side salad and I ordered the two piece cod fish and chips. His burger and salad arrived and looked great! He said it was delicious and was glad he had ordered it. I enjoyed my fish and chips as well. The fish was crisp and hot and the fries were the best I've had in a very long time. Crisp and flavorful. The side of coleslaw was interesting, I tasted fresh dill. My only regret was I didn't get a photo to share with you. We'll be back! read more

The pork belly was flavorful and tender. Fries were hot and crunchy. I personally thought the steak my friend got was small but he enjoyed it. We stopped here for crab cakes and lobster bisque and a beer while on our day trip from Friday Harbor to Orcas island. First of all, the food was amazing. Second of all, the view was amazing. Third of all the staff was AMAZING! The waiters overheard us say we were visiting from Friday harbor for the day and let us know the inter island ferry was canceled which we had planned to take back later in the day. Thank goodness they told us because we made it on the last ferry back to Friday harbor in the Knick of time! Phew! All around great joint and would have stayed for dinner if the ferry fiasco didn't happen. Also lesson learned- always check the ferry schedule! read more

Orcas Island is a tough place for dinner. Sure, on the few days that it's open, you can splurge at the primly fashionable New Leaf. If your entire party is seafood lovers, you can drop sizeable stacks of cash at the Inn at Ship Bay. You can brave the smug, irritable matrons of Rose's to get stingy portions of Eurostuff made with rare and precious "local ingredients." But if you are looking for a generous, well-prepared, unfussy but nevertheless skillful meal served by attentive and caring people, I recommend cooking your own food in your rental accommodations. On Orcas, burgers at the Lower are all that's left at dinnertime, after you subtract the pretentious, risibly-priced, stingy morsels of local cuisine. Sadly, the Madrona isn't an exception. My companion and I had an expensive and disappointing dinner here. I ordered a house salad and the linguine with Buck Bay manila clams, and my companion had a rather dry bacon cheeseburger for $16. He asked the waitress to deliver the "house sauce" on the side; this was overlooked, and the bottom bun struggled to stay intact under a thick layer of house-goo. I urged him to try to get the waitstaff to make it right, but he was too polite and declined to make a fuss, and instead disposed of the polluted bottom bun in the dish provided for my spent clamshells. The clams in my dish were excellent. Perfectly cooked, and not a trace of sandy grit. The rest of the dish was a disaster. The "sauce" for this pasta was simply the cooking liquid for the clams. Nothing more. This liquid had been salted to the point of lip sear. A tablespoon of chopped garlic had been dumped in. There was no parmesan; no hint of white wine; inadequate butter. It was a thin, watery, garlicky, fiercely salty trencher of grayish broth that stuck to the linguine not at all. The rim of the plate offered two thin slices of baguette--not toasted, not grilled, not nothin', just sliced and cold. Linguine with clams is not "dump pasta in the gray-with-dirt clam cooking liquid." Hell to the no. Especially at an absurdly lofty $25. The house salad of ordinary bagged greens, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, and red onion was good, and at $10, seemed generous and correctly-priced. If I'd had just the salad and the clams, minus linguine, and for a much more reasonable price than $25--and if a family with two miserable and screechy young kids (one of whom erupted into a DEFCON 5 meltdown after dumping her milk all over their entire area) had not been seated next to us--this might have been a pleasant experience. read more
