As a Mexican, it's super hard to find good, authentic Mexican food in Flagstaff. Lots of "locals" () will lead you astray with their recommendations however, Madrez is the spot to be!!! I've eaten here countless times and I'm never disappointed. They serve breakfast and lunch and have a variety of dishes, including vegetarian options. Their waffles are incredible as are their burritos, skillets, tostadas, and gorditas. Breakfast always comes with a side of whole beans (flavored with ham hock) which are super fresh. I can truly say there's nothing bad on this menu! The staff is always super welcoming and friendly and the ambiance is refreshing. It's a smaller space and it does get pretty busy, so be aware of that. The best part is that the cafe is family owned, with roots in Playa del Carmen, MX. Unfortunately, it felt overpriced for what we received. The portions were quite small, and overall the food didn't live up to the cost. My partner and I ordered a chorizo burrito, a skillet poblano, and a plain waffle. While everything was just okay, it honestly felt like something we could have made better at home. I especially wouldn't recommend the waffles -- they were very airy, almost like toast, and at $14 they just didn't feel worth it. On my recent trip to Flagstaff I was looking for a coffee spot when I landed on this place. It's located in the Safeway shopping center. I had a latte with oat milk and the chorizo chilaquiles. Both solid tasty choices. I hear the waffles are a must try, maybe on my next trip. They have breakfast burritos, skillets, bagels, gorditas, waffles, vegetarian options and hot & cold coffee drinks. My partner ordered the skillet poblano with 1 extra egg. Also, not fried eggs but scrambled eggs and they customized it. They kindly took the order on phone, so it was quick for us. The taste was good but we felt the quantity was a little less(could have been better) for $16.12 with taxes (I see $12 on the menu). As in, beans was less in quantity and had a watery gravy. The dish could have more veggies in it. There is plenty of seating available, the restaurant is clean and the there two clean restrooms. There are two tables outside in the shade as well. A delicious locally owned spot to check out! We stopped by on a recent weekend trip to Flagstaff and the food was amazing. The wait times for the food were short, the restaurant felt welcoming and was clean, plus they feature art work on local artists on their walls. Pricing wasn't bad, you can spend a similar amount at a fast food place and the food portions are just the right size. Several of us ordered the Birria tacos, and man were they good! Their birria is tender and perfectly seasoned, melting in your mouth with every bite. The quesadillas are packed with gooey, melty cheese that makes for the ultimate comfort food experience. Their sauces were so spicy but the perfect amount that enhances the entrees. I wish I could have stayed longer to try their lunch menu! The place was well tidy. A great spot for breakfast! We ordered the waffle with fruit and yogurt which was delicious and our favorite part of our order! I also had the gorditas poblanas & for background I grew up with homemade gorditas so the texture and taste of the flour Gordita wasn't the best but it was still yummy! The filling was also great! It was missing some salt in my opinion! The chorizo chilaquiles were good but not great. The eggs were cooked to perfection and the sauce was flavorful but the cheese wasn't fully melted and the tortillas were a bit stale so the texture was a bit off for me. I am super particular with Mexican food and with that being said i still really enjoyed my food and would definitely come again! Wanted to try chorizo chilaquiles, several things looked delicious-and we wanted to support a local spot before our hike and heading back home to Phoenix- on our cross country trip. We weren't greeted, it was dead in there at 10:50AM. The lady behind the counter had a major scowl on her face and said go order over there and pointed to the wall where there are menus. We grabbed 5 menus for our family of 5 and sat at the bar top. She continued to scowl. We tried to ask a question about an item on the menu and she quickly interrupted us and said you order over there and pointed to the clover brand register they have. And after that it put a sour taste in our mouths. She wasn't helpful at all and so we got up and left. Would have liked to try their food but we will avoid this spot next time we visit flagstaff. But this rating is based on the service we received while trying to order breakfast, not their food. It was basic inside. And there is some seating out front as well. Found this place on Yelp when looking for somewhere to eat on the way home from the Grand Canyon. You must stop and eat here if you are in the area. We had the American burrito with an iced mocha and the skillet poblano with a limeade. WOW!!! Everything was extremely fresh and it was all fantastic. They serve everything with their homemade pinto bean and those were amazing. They taste like your abuelita made them herself. As a matter of fact I had to take a peak in the kitchen to make sure she wasn't. The food was that fresh and tasty. The staff is extremely friendly and the spot is small but it feels roomy. We came here for breakfast due to the high 5 star review. Honestly, this could have been upped one star at least and maybe two if it weren't for the blatantly uncooked egg. So to start, I love the inside. It's small in a strip mall are with a few tables. You go up to the counter to order and they call your number. They have a good selection of waffles, Mexican breakfasts a few specialty items. They do have coffee and tea as well. The prices were decent, a little high but decent for Flagstaff. I had the breakfast waffle with egg, bacon and cheese. Everything was phenomenal except the egg. The menu said fried egg, which means all of the white is crispy and the yolk nice and wet. They cooked my egg completely sunny side up and did not even flip it to cook the top. The entire white was basically uncooked and wet. The yolk was the only edible part but still slightly soapy tasting due to not being cooked. The waffle, however, was crispy but fluffy and soft. The bacon was nice and crispy but also movable and the syrup was good. I did not have them recook my egg because it was already wetting the waffle and they would have had to remake the entire thing. We were driving through Flagstaff when we found this place. This place is fan-fricken-tastic. It's about as authentic Mexican food that you'll get in a restaurant. The food is very delicious and plentiful. Portions are good in size. The service is very good. Staff is friendly and attentive to our needs. I grew up eating this kind of food and let me tell you it was a 9 on authenticity (sorry my wife's cooking is a better). In regard to ambiance it's what I would consider a hole in the wall kind of place, I mean that as a compliment. It's at the end of a strip mall out of the way.
