We discovered this place by happy accident when we were headed to another restaurant in this strip mall that was closed. Man are we glad we did! Although the outside is not much to look at, the interior is clean and well kept. There were three of us so we ordered the carne asada tacos (which were on special for the day), fish tacos, and an enchilada/hard shell taco platter. The food was outstanding! They bring homemade sauces to the table; a red a green and what tasted and looked like an avocado sauce. All were delicious! These were all combos so they came with really good beans and the best Mexican rice I can recall ever eating. I practically ran to Los Altenos after a long vacation away from Mexican food. This taqueria in Flagstaff serves up all your favorite Mexican bites. I was in desperate need of a fix and Los Altenos swooped in to save the day. I specifically was craving street tacos, so I ordered a little bit of everything off their menu. They offer both large and small sized tacos. To be honest, their 'small' size is what I'd consider an average taco in the LA food scene. I ordered a variety of small tacos with their chicken, pastor, and carne asada, as well as a few chicken hard tacos. I finally made it back for tacos, and yeah, this keeps its five-star for the cabeza tacos alone. I've ordered a lot of cabeza tacos around and these might be the best I've had--the meat was in big enough chunks to appreciate how tender and fresh it was, and it was super juicy. Salsas are also fresh. Tortillas could be fresher, which is my main complaint. Adobada was pretty good but not as heavily spiced as Los Altos, carnitas were a bit dry. But the cabeza and menudo alone will keep me coming back here. read more

We really loved our dinner here! We were here in Flagstaff for a couple of days and we wanted to try some Mexican food, given we live much farther from the country itself than they do here. The difference is staggering, in a good way. I got the birria tacos and these were delicious and unlike any birria taco attempt I've tried. These were delicious and the consommé that it came with was great. We surprisingly had leftovers, and they kept really well. Smiling faces ready to help. The tortillas didn't fall apart which is a huge plus. The corn tortillas tasted great. I ordered 4 different tacos-Chicharron, Asada, Carnitas, and Lengua. Favorite was the chicharrón and least favorite was the carnitas because it was a little dry. Can't give for stars because of the mediocre side salsas. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Over priced food and small portions. Food came out cold. Only the French fries were hot. Service was amazing the lady's were nice and all. But from past experiences it's better to not complain because if they remake your food you might get spit in it. Will definitely not come back. I've been going to Los Altenos for all my Mexican food cravings since my first year at NAU -five years ago ! The food is not only delicious but it's ran by a core team that's been able to elevate their business and represent their culture immensely since then. On Saturday I stopped by with a friend to grab some pozole and menudo to go and it couldn't have been busier, two different construction groups, the whole NAU men's cross country team, and a few others and the two main women working that day are nonstop moving and getting it done, they gave such kind and great service ! These guys at Los Altenos deserve better than their 4 star rating! C'mon people, give them their due respect! In a small strip building just outside of the downtown Flagstaff area sits Los Altenos! Not much to look at from the outside, or even the interior. But anyone who knows, and looks for, good Mexican food knows that it's these type of locations that do it best! Two words for ya...Carnitas Dinner! Their take on the carnitas classic was different but extraordinary! The meat was tender, well seasoned, and really juicy! The rice was good, but he side of beans was excellent. It appears that they make their own flour tortillas too which had me from the start! If you want a more authentic Mexican experience, then this is your stop when visiting Flagstaff! read more

So we were looking for a place that had tripas within our area in town. We came across this place and decided to give them a try. As you walk in it seems like your typical "bertos" type of restaurant where you order at the counter and get your food on disposable plates. The staff seemed pleasant and they spoke both English and Spanish. We ordered a tripas burrito with pico and guacamole and a carnitas burrito with pico and guacamole to-go. I understand that most places add rice and beans to fill up the burrito but the amount of tripas in our burrito was drowned by the guac & pico I think I maybe counted a total of 10 tripas pieces the carnitas was the same, very little. Again, I knew the burritos would be a little skimped but seriously it was not worth the money we paid for 2 burritos! To top it all off the food lacked salt or flavor period! I don't usually do negative reviews especially when the service was good but almost $30 for 2 to-go burritos with very little filling is disappointing! read more

3.5stars if it was an option. Mexican food in FLG is pretty meh. I used to go to Los Altenos a couple times a week, mainly because it was close and cheap. It's like a lot of places, you can find a few good things on the menu. It's a pretty typical mostly baja style place with some traditional items, like Menudo and Posole. They added Birrial tacos that were pretty darned good. Their Breakfast burritos, served all day, used to be 3.99, then 4.99 which was still great. Unfortunately, that's not the case anymore. Prices finally caught up, after a long time being way cheaper, to the rest of FLG. At a more modest price increase, I'd have gave them 4 stars because of value, but it's generally not worth what your paying anymore for the burritos or combo plates. There are some good items on the menu, it's just the prices are out of whack now. Last time I was there, it was like 4.85 for 1 street taco. The price increases really aren't their fault, which I understand, but still... It was one of the only Mexican places in Flag I'd eat at. Best Mexican food in Flagstaff. Basic order at the counter and they bring the food to the table. No frills atmosphere. But, the food is outstanding. My go to is the #2 Chili Relleno and cheese enchilada. The red enchilada sauce is my determining factor for what I'm looking for in a Mexican restaurant. It is perfect. The relleno is stuffed with plenty of cheese with the right amount of egg batter, and the poblano chili has the perfect amount of heat. Hubby prefers chicken enchiladas with green sauce or the fish tacos. Always busy at lunch. Well worth the wait if you don't get there before the crowd. The outside patio tables are a plus when the weather is nice. read more
