Located on Fraser st., Madras Spice is a small little restaurant that has authentic south Indian food. They have so many different dosas (staple south Indian breakfast dish), I tried their cone dosa from their kids menu because their normal dosas are so huge! Their cone dosa came with two types of chutney - coconut and tomato both were good. It also comes with sambar (curry) which was much better than many other places, it wasn't watery and had good flavours. My friend got their lamb vindaloo dosa which had lamb vindaloo filling in the dosa, it was spicy but I loved it!! For appetizer we got their fried bell peppers, so unique but pretty delicious. We also got their sev puri chaat which was pretty good too, but not as spicy. Their service was pretty fast! Decided to give Madras Spice, a South Indian restaurant, a try for dinner. They're next door to Ho Yuen Kee Restaurant. Can't believe they're open till 2:00am everyday. We dropped in on a Friday evening (7:30pm). Service is no frills but one of the only places I've seen that gives you the option to tip 5%. Menu consists of appetizers, soups, chef specials, dosa, uthappam, curries, vegetarian speciality, Indo Chinese and biriyani. Two weekday specials; Tuesday any dosas ($8.99) and Friday any biriyani ($11.99). We were asked for spice level, opting for medium. - Eggplant curry ($13.50) - all their curries come with rice and paratha. Couple of nice chunks of eggplant. Curry was okay but didn't make me want to keep on going back for more. - Madras spice fish curry ($15.99) - fish pieces were tender, but curry was too similar in flavour to the eggplant. - Chicken biriyani ($11.99 Friday special) - decent amount of chicken but the rice was dry. Had to add the raita to soften things up. - Mandurai chicken kothu paratha ($16.99) - easily the worst dish of the night. The kothu paratha was dry, bland and uninspiring. We barely ate a third. This is a small restaurant that is popular with the local. It is always a good sign to see many Indian dining there. We ordered a dosa plate with buttered chicken and chicken vindaloo to share amongst 4 people. We weren't too hungry but thought we should eat something for dinner. These two dishes were perfect portion for us. Both dishes were excellent. I especially like the dosa plate. It is always impressive to see the dosa roll bigger than the plate. Came here cuz we had a long day and this was one of the few Indian food joints open after 10 pm. Nothing disappointing about this small eatery. In fact, it must be a "known hidden gem" since there were at least 6 tables full of diners in this smallish restaurant. We ordered the dosa plate special that came with your choice of protein filling (we chose butter chicken), 2 small bread-like appetizers, and a small dessert. The dosa was thin and massive (looked to be 2 feet diameter), and filled with a generous helping of butter chicken. The chicken vindaloo was a perfect spice level, and came with naan. The 2 dishes were perfect for 4 small dinners, as we had 4 late night diners. Service was friendly and attentive, felt like a family run establishment. The value was excellent as we left satisfied with tax and tip under $40 CDN. We just brushed the extensive menu and can't wait to try out other items. read more

We love this place! After a week in India we were craving a South India Thali plate and wow, we hit the jackpot at Madras Spice. The Dosa was amazing, the yellow dal perfectly spiced, and all the dishes blended so well our mouths came alive! What a treat. It's my first time to dine in at Madras Spice, I love their dosa and chicken curry with mild spice, both menus are excellent. I was surprised when we got the big dosa, it was the biggest dosa I've ever seen. :). The customer service is great. I will definitely try their other menus next time we dine in. The food preparation style and menu at Madras Spice is different in comparison to the normal North Indian cuisine that Vancouerites are exposed to. Madras Spice has a distinct flavour and flair from the Southeren Indian states and is a refreshing addition to the culinary smorgasbord we are so lucky to have in Vancouver. New Indian restaurant along the busy street of Fraser. nowadays most parking here is either metered or pay parking unless you wish to park in residential area and walk. Small place and just like any other Indian restaurant the smell of the spices are strong and sometimes it will make you salivate for hunger hahahhahaha,the only thing is the smell stick on your clothing. I had heard from few people about Madras Spice so i thought of giving it a try all the way driving from Surrey. #Yup i am that crazy for south indian food n that too for dosas.# Undoubtedly they have professional chefs as the Red Seal certification is displayed and you can see the skill in the food quality, taste and presentation. I tried Egg dosa which could have been better if they had added another egg as it seemed to be cooked with one egg only. Pretty bland and plain. My friend ordered spicy masala dosa which was fine too. We didn't find anything extra ordinary special . We still drool over sambar from Mayuri dosa in surrey then here. I wish i had bigger appetite to taste few more things on menu as the names were fascinating but nah.. Decor of the restaurant or i should call it small cafe is nice. Its bright colour mix of orange and green. A bit of South indian Colours touch#(U shuld check out colourful and beautiful sarees they wear and white flower in the hair) #sorry for going astray .Why am i talking about clothing when i am writing food review. The owner is a friendly guy and he seemed to have some regular customers then us as people were coming and talking to him. Definitely , a visit is required if you are south indian food lover. More cleaned washrooms and an air condition on a hot summer day would get them more stars from me at least. Ordered some take-out from here one evening after learning of their large vegetarian menu. I ordered the Madras spice veg curry and the Bhindi pulikuzhambu (okra), which both come with rice and bread. They were able to do everything vegan for me (and thus swapped out the bread for dosa). Both dishes were tasty, but without the depth and complexity of many other Indian places in town. Extremely inexpensive: $10.99 plus tax for each of the veggie curries, which is a steal, especially with the accompaniments. I'd be happy to order from here again. read more

A solid 3.5 star. This is my first time here, but my wife has been here a couple of times. She's the one that wanted me to try it out. I'm so glad that I did. We came here for dinner, and as soon as we walked into the restaurant the air was filled with spices and wonderful goodness. The decor is simple. I think the tables and chairs were left over from the previous business. You can tell that the restaurant used to be a Bubble World as they only attempted to cover up some of the decor. But who's here to talk about decor. I can honestly say that the food here is legit. They offer many dishes that is of all regions of India. There were dishes on the menu that I've never seen at any other Indian restaurant. We started with the fried fish appetizer. It was nicely seasoned, crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. I wanted to try something new, so I ordered the uthappam without knowing what it is. It was surprisingly delicious. It was a thin rice pancake, that had onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños cooked into it. Kinda a cross between an okonomiyaki and naan. Can't really describe. You guys just gotta go and check it out. We also had the goat curry. Sorry, forgot to take a picture of this one. The curry came with a side of rice and paratha. This dish was yummy. So flavourful, and the goat meat just melted in my mouth. I thought the food was a solid 4 star. But I question the cleanliness of the front of house. There was litter in the dining area and extra settings were not removed - hope they change out ALL the utensils left on the table after diners are done. It makes me wonder what the kitchen looks like. Also, the lone server could use more training. Our waitress was very nice, but lacked communication skills and confidence. All in all, I will return for more because the food is yummy and prices are reasonable. read more

I've only really tried their vegetable samosas but they were so delicious I've gotta write about them. I walked in and ordered and they were ready within five minutes for takeout. They're three mini samosas with two sauces. It was really the crust and the samosa wrapping that blew me away. Usually it's the samosa filling that is the star of the show, but the crust! It didn't blend in with the filling like crusts usually do. It was the perfect amount of thickness, it really felt like it was a pocket to hold the filling together. It was so delightful biting into it because the texture and chewiness was perfect. The filling was incredible as well. 5/5 samosa. read more

Not many places compare with our favorite place in the world - All India Cafe in Pasadena, California. This one does! Fresh & well priced! Oh. We tried Madras Spice a week ago when checking out the neighbourhood as we will be moving to Fraser Street soon. Oh. My. God. It is so amazing! I love Dosas and crave them frequently, but had only previously been to House of Dosas on Kingsway and Dosa Express on SE Marine Drive. Both restaurants are great, but good lord Madras Spice is on a whole different level. The dosa itself was the crispiest, most flavourful and delicious dosa I have EVER had, and what I was most impressed with was the complexity of the flavour of fillings, and amount of meat you get in a meat filled dosa or meat curry. The great prices of the dishes in combination with how much you get is so impressive - I cannot wait to move to this neighbourhood and return to Madras Spice!! Another thing that I loved about this spot was how simple and clean the interior was. They had party decorations up when we visited which were from a recent 2 year birthday celebration they had thrown, which I thought was really sweet. Also, our server was so kind and really cared about ensuring that we had a good experience and wanted to return. I loved her! My third visit to this great spot this year. Every single meat dish on the menu is an authentic representation of each region in South India. I have travelled through the 4 regions in Southern India several years ago. Tasted the unique cuisine in each state of the South. Madras Spice genuinely represents each specific region. It is not wildly hot which is precisely how it is in South India. The only true South Indian restaurant in this city that does an impeccable job of the food. To boot, service is sincere. Place is very clean. Decor is contemporary. You will notice the effort put into design from their website, to their menus and the decor. To be honest, i only decided to try this resto after a couple of east Asian ladies were here when it was closed. They said this place has the nicest dosas & sambal sauces they've ever had. I thought that was telling. I'm seriously NOT disappointed! The dosa has a lovely just right thickness & no weird after flavour; same with the soup that accompanied the Masala Dosa i ordered. All the other places have that "can't describe" unpleasant smell/taste that normally goes w the dosa & soup. What a happy surprise! The 3 sambal dipping sauces were coconut, mint & tomato. By far the best is tomato. Next time i would just get 3 little pots of tomato. I was told they would accommodate. So great! Will come again for my next dosa fix. Good job Madras Spice! read more

Stopped in yesterday after some errands. This would be my first in house try since I have ordered 2 times from Skip the Dishes. The restaurant was empty except for staff at a few tables. I ordered a samosa to start, Malai Kofta and a diet coke. What came for my pop was a can of superstore brand diet cola- weird! With a straw. Yikes. Service was very attentive but as I waited I started to look around and noticed the restuarant was far from clean. The door itself was filthy with greasy smears and hand prints. Why I walked in I don't know. The base of tables had what looked like food on there, there was a huge piece of gum on the wall right beside me, and tables appeared to have a film of grease? Even when I was paying the debit machine had food caked on the sides. I know all businesses have down time and in that down time a little cleaning should be done.... I didn't leave however which may or may not have been a mistake. I ate my food and the kofta was bland but the samosa (3 little ones) was excellent and served with 2 sauces. I truly don't think I will order again or stop by. The service was spot on and attentive and I'm sure those girls could spend some time cleaning a little each shift. read more

Based on the one time I was here, I can't give it better than 3 stars. But I think it has the potential. The good: 1) our goat curry was awesome, not just good. I would have it again. 2) And so was the paratha, which is the North (?) Indian version of naan apparently. This stuff is so crispy, fluffy, flaky and lightly buttered, all in one. They're a bit small, so order and order of two each. The bad: 1) service was sub-par. We felt ignored. We were seated without menus and not given water. Well, when you have hungry and throaty customers, that's just bad service. 2) my plate was handled by dirty finders, so it had a bunch of stains and smudges around the edges. Come on guys, that's careless! Am I expecting too much? 3) The naan was s#!t. It tastes exactly like that store bought crap. Pretty sure it was. It also had that uniform look of a store bought naan. Just stay away. Get the paratha instead. It's actually clearly made there, by them, fresh. Yum. That's what you're after, right!? 4) I told them their naan tasted store bought and that they shouldn't even serve it since their paratha is so good (ballsy of me, I know) and they shrugged it off. I guess they want customers to have naan as an option? But they could just call the paratha "Northern naan," y'know? Anyways, the reason this is a con to me is that it shows that they aren't willing to take serious feedback and critiques in order to improve their food. Based on that, I wouldn't want to return. Restaurant is slowly loosing its charm! First time when we came here, everything was good! This time when we went for dinner, here are my observations! 1. Table was not clean was still seeing grease 2. spoon and fork that was kept there was sticking to the tissue with food stains 3. Lots of small flies (to be fair - Indian restaurants might have this , but no idea inside kitchen how the cleanliness is ) 4. waitress needs a replacement In terms of food i took chicken chetinadu - common guys this should be best on your menu - and the taste was not up-to my expectation, its was not strong at all - little sweetish....chetinadu should be spicy and with lots of pepper and it should be hot - i didn't see any of these in my dish. Its A New Gem To Our Very own Fraser Street ! Iv been living in this area for last 6 years and these guys won my heart on my first visit. Take your time to go through their menu and ask your server for suggestions if you really love spicy food. They will surely help you with amazing FLAVOURFUL dishes (and not just spicy).Iv tried their Schezwan Chilli Fish (super spicy as ordered) with Egg noodles and I loved it. Iv had their dosas before which are so light and crisp. I am happy to the realization that it will take me sometime to cover their whole menu at least once and I am sure to pick out my favourites soon enough. My husband was nice enough and didn't want to argue at the moment. She came back later on and asked if everything is ok. We told her it's fine, and just wanted to remind her to listen more carefully when she takes order next time because we really didn't order this, we were just asking questions about that dish.
