    Nilagari Chicken Dosa
    Tee E.

I had no idea what I was in for when I walked into this restaurant. I didn't know what a Dosa was. I do now. I have never had a Dosa anywhere else to compare? But holy crap did I enjoy this one. I had the Nilagari Chicken Dosa. Came with a soup and two sauces. Soup was pleasantly spicy. The sauces disappointed me though. They were frozen. I know they were frozen as they were still a bit icy when they were served to me. The dosa though is literally the size of my arm. It's not filled all the way through but a good chunk is. One of my favorite new restaurants for sure.

So I just moved to Surrey and I am investigating the food scene. Let's just say I am not use to the only food around being Indian... so I thought it would take a while to find a good place for it. You know how people joke that the food in Surrey is not good and is great in Vancouver? Well I don't really think so, I've had some bad food in Vancouver, even bad Indian food. The food here is amazing! Wow, I have had a lot of dosas (even make them myself at home) and eaten South Indian food a number of times and thought i'd found decent places. (House of Dosa in Vancouver comes to mind - but that place is crazy busy and small) This was by far the best dosa experience I've had. I came in late one night to grab something to eat and ordered a Spinach Masala Dosa as I'd never tried that version before. My dosa came out quite quickly and hot. The bowl of Sambar was "huge" compared to the tiny thali plate bowls usually served at other restaurants. I tasted it, actually edible! Not overwhelmingly spicy or watery and there are lentils in it. This is best Sambar I've had now and I really liked it. The dosa also comes with 3 chutney's but as I'm a baby and don't like spicy food I only used the coconut chutney. The server came back to ask if I wanted more sambar or chutney. Are you serious? Refills? Never heard of before! I got more coconut chutney just because it was so delicious. Another plus, the dosa was NOT greasy. Now you've sold me. I can't stand having greasy fingers from Indian food and I was so impressed that it was crispy and dry and just the way I like it. The amount of filling they give you is great. It's definitely enough to eat with the whole dosa. I know a lot of places put a tiny scoop in the middle and you wonder why you pay more for a filled dosa when they're so stingy. $8.50+ tax to be full and satisfied? You can't beat that with this quality. I will definitely be coming back, bringing my husband and any of my other family and friends in need of a good dosa and South Indian food. And thank you so much for not making it spicy when I asked for mild! Much appreciated.

Lentil/chickpea/spinach cripsies...I don't recall the name of these!

Don't let the minimalist signage fool you. Get inside and you will be blown away by the beautiful colors of the walls, floor, chairs and decorations. I was meeting up with a friend there and we sat at a booth. From my booth, I was watching some Bollywood movie bits and was actually being entertained by the cheesiness of many of them. At least all the women I saw in the films were insanely beautiful. I ordered crisp lentil/chickpea/spinach patties (deep fried) and a vegan dosa (spinach); I ordered my dosa hot and spicy. My friend ordered some sort of flat bread platter that came with several little bowls of condiments. The place was not so busy and our food all arrived in a timely matter. The food did not disappoint at all. My friend enjoyed his multi-compartment dish and I was enjoying my dosa (it was my third dosa experience). I was so full from the dosa I had to share me patties with my friend. The intense spiciness of my dosa was causing me to sweat too....that is a good thing! The restaurant was pleasingly clean and open-spaced. Service was good too as the waiter informed me which items contained no wheat or egg. I would definitely return to this place!

Tried a chicken dosa for the first time in my life. Ordered the Niligiri chicken Dosa and it was delicious.. I would definitely go back just for that. The idli was quite average. So was the sambar wada.

The space here is truly massive, and…read morewhile it was mostly empty when we came at around 2:30 - I can picture the hubbub of activity that would be present during peak dinner hours. This does seem to be a highly recommended place to eat Indian food in Surrey. I had the Non-Veg Thali, which isn't on the menu, but the waitress helpfully let us know about. It's very customizable - and I went with garlic naan, rice, two tandoori chicken pieces, lamb vindaloo, and shahi paneer - all in a single plate! Pretty much everything was excellent. I'm not even sure where to start. The garlic naan was fantastic. Soft, buttery, with just a slight hint of garlic and lightly charred on the outside. I could honestly eat this by itself and be satisfied. Garlic naan is a staple of what I order whenever eating Indian food, and this might be the best one I've had. The shahi paneer was also great; tomato-forward, creamy, and the paneer was super soft. The lamb vindaloo was a real standout. It was immensely flavorful - not lacking for spice at all - but you don't just taste capsaicin - you taste all the cumin, cardamom, and garam mixed in with the curry. But the lamb itself is the best part of the curry; it's so tender and juicy. The absolute peak, though, was the tandoori chicken. These were two large dark meat pieces, which were cooked to absolute perfection - retaining so much juice and fat. The skin was a perfect deep orange, seasoned with a ton more spices. It's like eating fried chicken but without the breading, but this was arguably even better. The masala fries were the only thing kind of a miss - as they lacked any masala. The price of the thali was only 23 CAD. That's a pretty insane deal for how much food you get - I was unable to finish everything on my plate despite being very hungry. Honestly two people could share this and be satisfied. When you consider how much sharing and new orders for bread, rice, and curries goes on at your typical Indian restaurant, this is crazy good value. Overall, I would classify this as the best Indian food I've had outside of Asia. 9.5/10

Solid Spot in the Mall, But Some Temperature Issues…read more This was my first time at this particular Ustaad G location, though I'm familiar with the chain. It's situated inside a shopping mall and was pleasantly clean and not too crowded when I visited. I was seated right away, and the waitress was excellent--attentive and checked on me multiple times to ensure everything was good. I ordered my all-time favourite, the Amritsari Kulcha. The bread itself was fantastic and arrived piping hot, just as it should. However, the dish was a bit inconsistent. While the kulcha was hot, the accompanying chickpeas and condiments were only lukewarm. As a former restaurant owner myself, I'm a stickler for this: hot food should be served hot across the board. The portion size was okay, but the garnish was surprisingly minimal--just a few sparse pieces of carrot that looked a bit sad in the tray (see my photo). Despite that, the core flavours were enjoyable. It's not the same as what you'd find in Amritsar, but it's a satisfying dish. Pricewise, well this is Canada and in line with the economy. My Ratings: Ambience: 4/5 - Clean and modern. Service: 5/5 - Prompt and very attentive. Food & Value: 3.5/5 - Tasty, but the temperature issue and skimpy garnish hold it back. A good meal, but with a little more attention to detail on the kitchen line, it could be a great one.
