I had no idea what I was in for when I walked into this restaurant. I didn't know what a Dosa was. I do now. I have never had a Dosa anywhere else to compare? But holy crap did I enjoy this one. I had the Nilagari Chicken Dosa. Came with a soup and two sauces. Soup was pleasantly spicy. The sauces disappointed me though. They were frozen. I know they were frozen as they were still a bit icy when they were served to me. The dosa though is literally the size of my arm. It's not filled all the way through but a good chunk is. However, I believe that businesses of any type can strive to do better when the need is there. First, the positives: --Open late --Restaurant was fairly spacious --Coffee was good --Vegetable Briyani was solid --Wide ranging and varied menu --Food overall was not too salty, avoiding the problem of some spice-oriented restaurants. Now, for the suggestions that would have turned an OK experience into a great one: 1) Pay attention to allergy requests. Our coconut allergy was mentioned, but we still got the bowl of coconut sauce on the side. 2)Attentiveness to the food. The Sambar (side soups) for us came one with almost all carrots and nothing else, the other with no carrots and mostly squash. A quick check would have provided balance. 3)Attentiveness to the patrons. It's a busy restaurant, but a quick "how is everything" would have gone a long way. With a 30 minute wait time for the food, a bit of follow up would have been nice. The lamb wasn't cooked the way my partner liked it in her Dosa, but I was told that this is the South Indian style of cooking, so I won't hold that against them. As it stands, I would recommend the restaurant more if you're needing a late night experience after other options are closed, but I'd recommend it at other times if they can get the details right. read more

So I just moved to Surrey and I am investigating the food scene. Let's just say I am not use to the only food around being Indian... so I thought it would take a while to find a good place for it. You know how people joke that the food in Surrey is not good and is great in Vancouver? Well I don't really think so, I've had some bad food in Vancouver, even bad Indian food. The food here is amazing! Wow, I have had a lot of dosas (even make them myself at home) and eaten South Indian food a number of times and thought i'd found decent places. (House of Dosa in Vancouver comes to mind - but that place is crazy busy and small) This was by far the best dosa experience I've had. I came in late one night to grab something to eat and ordered a Spinach Masala Dosa as I'd never tried that version before. My dosa came out quite quickly and hot. The bowl of Sambar was "huge" compared to the tiny thali plate bowls usually served at other restaurants. I tasted it, actually edible! Not overwhelmingly spicy or watery and there are lentils in it. This is best Sambar I've had now and I really liked it. The dosa also comes with 3 chutney's but as I'm a baby and don't like spicy food I only used the coconut chutney. The server came back to ask if I wanted more sambar or chutney. Are you serious? Refills? Never heard of before! I got more coconut chutney just because it was so delicious. Another plus, the dosa was NOT greasy. Now you've sold me. I can't stand having greasy fingers from Indian food and I was so impressed that it was crispy and dry and just the way I like it. The amount of filling they give you is great. It's definitely enough to eat with the whole dosa. I know a lot of places put a tiny scoop in the middle and you wonder why you pay more for a filled dosa when they're so stingy. $8.50+ tax to be full and satisfied? You can't beat that with this quality. I will definitely be coming back, bringing my husband and any of my other family and friends in need of a good dosa and South Indian food. Don't let the minimalist signage fool you. Get inside and you will be blown away by the beautiful colors of the walls, floor, chairs and decorations. I was meeting up with a friend there and we sat at a booth. From my booth, I was watching some Bollywood movie bits and was actually being entertained by the cheesiness of many of them. At least all the women I saw in the films were insanely beautiful. I ordered crisp lentil/chickpea/spinach patties (deep fried) and a vegan dosa (spinach); I ordered my dosa hot and spicy. My friend ordered some sort of flat bread platter that came with several little bowls of condiments. The place was not so busy and our food all arrived in a timely matter. The food did not disappoint at all. My friend enjoyed his multi-compartment dish and I was enjoying my dosa (it was my third dosa experience). I was so full from the dosa I had to share me patties with my friend. The intense spiciness of my dosa was causing me to sweat too....that is a good thing! Cute restaurant but would not go back. The dosa had a sour taste to it that I did not enjoy albeit the chicken filling was nice. They have a delicious chai tea but the cups are very small and I was charged for 3 when I only ordered 2. The butter chicken was delicious but at the price of $14.99 it was extremely overpriced....I can get butter chicken of the same quality and a bigger portion at Tasty Indian Bistro down the road for $11 read more

*update 2018* We went back to this place for dinner. There was a silverfish on my plate when I finished my dosa. Made me question whether there were a few inside my dosa and if I had just consumed insects. If I could rate 0 stars I would. Original review: - we came in and it seemed busy and popular so we had our hopes up -one star because the spiced coffee was delicious. But the refill policy is weird I'll get to that - we order two thali plates, chicken khutu and a dosa - after about half an hour the thali plates arrive *cold* - then the khutu arrives and it's not very spicy - after about ten minutes the server arrives to tell us there is a problem with the grill and the dosa isn't coming. That was MY dish so I just ordered a biryani to keep it simple and hopefully have my food soon - it takes them an additional half an hour to bring my biryani and I end up having half of the khutu. - they don't even offer to provide the biryani for the dosa price as a courtesy as it took a full hour or so for my food to arrive and by that time everyone was finished eating. - when I asked for the free refill on my coffee she gave me one cup as opposed to the full teapot that originally was provided. - when I asked for the teapot with the coffee and an extra cup, she only filled it halfway and charged for a second coffee as I was sharing some with my mother in law - all in all, disappointed. read more

I'm revising my review from 2011, and reducing my review from 5 stars to 2 stars. The restaurant must've gone thru an ownership change, the service is slow, the food is bland and the waitstaff is forgetful. We were seated for 15 minutes before anyone brought us a menu. There was only one other table that was occupied and 3 waiters at the restaurant. They forgot our drink order, which is too bad since we were in the mood for cocktails and beer. The dosa filling wasn't fresh, I think they nuked it in the microwave. It's too bad the Dosa restaurant has gone downhill, it was one of my favorite places to dine when I visited Surrey. The food here in general is terrible. So why the 4 stars? The exception is the South Indian Thali which is very good. Both the vegetarian and non vegetarian options. When I absolutely crave a thali this is the place I think of even though it's too far for me to visit often. I wish there were places with a thali half as good in downtown Vancouver. Lunch with friends at Desi Dosa was a pleasure in every way! The Restaurant has uplifting energy, beautiful warm ambiance and food we found delicious! Portions are generous, made with quality ingredients and taste yummy! We had the fish curry, lamb dosa, spinach and feta dosa, idly, and more I forget the name of, though remember the good taste. Service was quick and attentive. Something for everyone on the menu, carnivores, vegetarians and vegans. In our group of 8 we had all three represented and we all left satisfied. Ok first off I'll say the dosa was very interesting although I did not know how to eat it. It was fun but not really much to it and very little filling for the price. Came with 3 side dishes dal and maybe a chutney and some white dairy one that was gross. The butter chicken was pretty good. Service was slow and disinterested like in many of these type of Indian restaurants. Had to flag waitress down and ask for every thing. I overheard the girl at the next table telling the waitress she got a piece of wire or something in her food and though the waitress seemed shocked she didn't offer her anything. My hubby and I went here for a new experience and were quite amazed at our meals. We both ordered the Dosa (I can't quite remember which one..but I think it was the Lamb Dosa) but it was a giant crepe rolled up with filling on the inside and different sauces. Wow, so good but I was so stuffed! For dessert, we had the Payasam which is Vermicelli, tapioca pearl, cooked sweetened with milk and enriched with pure desi ghee, fried cashew nuts and raisins. Simply delicious and we could barely breath from being so stuffed. It's hard to say no to food that sounds amazing and then when it sits in front of you, you just can't stop eating!! LOL! And when I jones for the heat, I don't have to travel far: Scott Road in North Delta is only 10 minutes away, and once there you can't throw a rock without hitting an Indian restaurant. The competition is necessarily fierce, so restaurants that have survived for more than a few years have usually done so on the merit of their food. One of the places I like to frequent is Desi Dosa Madras. Dined here with friends twice within a couple of weeks, and had a great experience both times. I had the chicken nilgiri dosa and it was both flavorful and filling. This was accompanied by the outstanding papri chaat appetizer - my mouth waters at the memory! Whoever said "trying new things is good for you" is a big fat liar! I love South Indian food and decided to pop in here because it was nearby and rated better on yelp thank my favourite dosa joint. The lamb dosa had a great cashew sauce however the lamb was not cleaned as thoroughly as it should have been. A lot of large fatty potions attached to little pieces of meat. The chicken 65 was very salty once again not cleaned as well as it should have been. Skip this place, if anyone has favourite dosa places in Surrey, let me know! read more

Haven't eaten such dosa as of now in GVA. (its too bad). Can't even finish one. The masala of masala dosa is just meshed potatoes with no taste. Sambhar full of hing(asafetida). All flavors of sambhar are being killed by extensive hing. Avoid going here... Better try other place. There are many good South Indian restaurants in Surrey. read more

The food is really good, my compliments to the chef's and the two server's who serviced us who were very nice. That one Indian guy and the Asian guy were very nice and great at there job. Unfortunately not all good things last. There is this old crusty lady who works there who i believe is one of the owners. Absolutely rude, ignorant, arrogant, and unkind to her staff and costumers. One day I went in the evening to pick up an order, I had ordered the cauliflower and fish appetizers and as i came to pick up my order I told this old lady that i came for a pick up. As i was telling her what my order was she stopped me at cauliflower and directly went to the back of the counter to what i had thought was my order, i paid $33.53, and just to find out later i had paid for someone else's order. After i realized this mistake i thought it was a simple fix and a small mistake and that i would get my money back. But no she refused and said it was my fault that i didn't call again to check on my order and she was 100% percent sure that i had ordered these four orders of cauliflower which i didn't and i tried to explain to this old hag that i was the one who called and that what i ordered from the phone was the cauliflower and fish so she took the food back and said "you should really be more clearer with your orders and look all this food is wasted now" in my head i'm like bitch not my fault you have hard of hearing over the food and cant keep track of your orders. so at this point i was exhausted and just asked for a refund and she refuses to give a refund and makes excuses like she doesn't know how to use the till and she cant do it and that i should comeback on Monday when there will be someone here to do it cause she doesn't know apparently. if your running a business how does your punk ass not know how to work a cash register and what idiot decided to give you a chance at this restaurant. so as i was getting into my car agreeing to comeback on Monday (this was all on a Saturday btw) she comes back calling me in saying she had the wrong order and said you paid for someone else's and sorry for the inconvenience and miscommunication. Well... HUN-TY if you weren't dumb and naive this wouldn't of happened so she still said i couldn't give the money she owed me cause i ordered food worth $17.53 even in cash saying "there no money in the cash register and that i have to go to the bank on Monday. So as she made me do that math for what she owed me cause of course this woman doesn't even now simple math while owning a business -.- so she wrote it on the receipt for store credit but i told her i want a refund and said to come Monday. so unfortunately i had to come two weeks after cause life is busy and i don't have time for this shit and today i went in to get my refund and what do you know she is there and doesn't know how to give a refund so i just went for the store credit for simplicity. so as she was on her phone, in a booth, not doing work, where everyone can see here slacking off, the nice Asian waiter at this shitty Indian restaurant takes our order and i asked how much a side of rice is as he goes to see how much it is. The register was being janky and so she says to the very nice waiter that "you should focus more, the machine isn't the problem. you are". My friend and I were so appalled by the treatment of this poor soul it was unacceptable so i left him a nice note of encouragement. so after i came to give my store credit but we went $1.27 over the credit so my friend paid for it. The old hag was rudely insisting that we tip. so we obviously we didn't and said good by for ever to that place. My hubby and I went there for late lunch on Sunday and the food was simply amazing. This place is a good change from the regular North Indian food you get everywhere in surrey. We had prawns curry with rice and fish curry with rice traditional Kerala style food. Price is average. Definitely will go there again and very soon. read more

Awful food. Fruit flies flyiing around, couldn't get a cup of coffee. Papadomes were greazy. Chicken biryani had huge chunks of gross chicken, tasteless. Waitress was uninterested in serving you.
