Cute neighborhood cafe with a full case of freshly baked goods to greet you when you walk through the door. No indoor seating, but they have a covered seating area with overhead space heaters outside, which was much appreciated on this near-freezing morning I visited. I ordered a 12 oz mocha and was pleased that it was not overly sweet or too piping hot to sip on as I enjoyed my strawberry scone. Unlike many scones I've had elsewhere, this one wasn't dense, but rather airy and moist on the inside. I loved that they used fresh strawberries, and the course sugar on top added a pleasantly sweet crunch to every bite. Prices were a bit steep (almost $10 for coffee and a pastry) but reasonable in light of inflation and the quality and portion size. And I much prefer supporting a local bakery than a large chain coffee shop. read more

Staff act as though all customers are a bother--specifically the younger cashier. Audibly sighing, cutting me off mid order. I've been putting up with it because of the good food. But last time I went in the barista was so egregiously rude and condescending to two patrons who were Mexican. They had been waiting too long for food (45 min)--their service toward everyone else was remarkably different despite all customers being nice. Food tastes good but the staff attitudes leave a sour aftertaste. TLDR go here if you're okay with good food coated in guilt and sprinkles of degradation. read more

I was looking for an Italian Cream Cake - my mom used to make it for special occasions and this was the only place I could find one. But everything looked so good, I threw in a Carrot Cake for good measure. When I picked them up, we grabbed some yummy chocolate chip cookies that were still warm! I am sort of a cake connoisseur, I get around the Seattle cake community (ummm, A LOT) and MK's cakes are top tier, every bit as good as any I've had! My favorite place to grab lunch on a sunny day. Parking is plentiful, there's 6-7 outdoor tables outside to sit / eat and the wait to get your food is fairly quick! I highly suggest grabbing lunch here then making your way to Madison Park to sit and eat! I always get the Madison St. Special sandwich (reminds me of thanksgiving in a sandwich- Turkey, cranberry sauce, cheese, sliced apples and lettuce). When you get the sandwich whole, it will come with a bag of chips. There's also an option to get 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 salad or sides of your choice. There's a plethora of wonderful sides to choose from: beet salad, broccoli salad (with bacon and raisins), fruit salad, Asian sesame salad, curried chicken salad, roasted cauliflower & gemelli salad (MUST GET) etc. Always a hard choice to choose! Sandwich options are the same- so many options! Then there's soups, mac 'n cheese, quiche, lasagna, meatloaf, green goddess chicken. Am I overwhelming you yet? With so many food options, Madison Kitchen also sells goodies- tote bags, candles, soaps, fragrances, scarves and even little treasures that makes for great gifts! I highly recommend just trying this cafe for lunch! They close at 3pm typically so make sure you keep that in mind if you plan to come for late lunch! read more

They also seem to be doing you the customer a giant favor. Pouring a cup of drip coffee is such a chore. Making a latte is a hardship apparently. It's incredibly off-putting. Only a quick grin/intense stare when it's your turn to decide on a tip. The coffee and baked goods are good. Limited real food menu is fine. Sweet little cafe worth dragging yourself out to Madison Park for. Right on the main street, the Madison Kitchen serves as a cozy new breakfast and lunch spot in this out of the way neighborhood. I'm always on the lookout for a weekday breakfast spot, and although simple and tending towards baked goods, it is officially worth a drive across town for their breakfast sandwich w/egg. Their bakers breakfast comes with a baked item of your choice, a enormous bowl of fresh fruit topped with a petite ice cream sized scoop of rich yogurt and a coffee. I went with a group who ordered this up in quantities, either getting it with some fresh baked scones or in one case, settling on a dark, delicious chocolate egg-white meringue. The black sheep always nails it, because that darn chocolate meringue was terrific and fresh, so much so that you might be willing to rewrite your breakfast rules to include it. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with a very garlicky aioli and a perfectly cooked oozy medium egg. I almost drove back to get it the following day. It was good. This is a small, popular cafe, and the breakfast here is simple, but respectable and solid: breakfast sandwiches, homemade granola, fresh baked items and oatmeal. Seating is limited and service is not particularly speedy. When we first arrived, the lone server seemed overwhelmed by the influx of customers, but soon after the owner (or chef?) arrived and the hospitality was taken up a notch and proved attentive. Later visits for dessert sampling proved exceedingly tasty, we especially like the Naniamo bar and the shortbread bar with chocolate, tahini and pistachios. Feels like a neighborhood spot. Best thing I can say is staff was very friendly. I was in a hurry and apparently this place is very busy on the regular. I asked for the quickest meal option possible because I couldn't and didn't want to wait. The gal said a meatloaf sandwich and grabbed one for me. Paid $13 plus $2 tip, $15 total, grabbed my sandwich and quickly hurried out. Went back to the office to eat my "meatloaf" sandwich and opened up a roast beef sandwich. To me this place is overpriced and overrated. Sandwich was so so. Nothing special by any means. The high pricing is due to location in Madison Park. Really don't recommend. read more

I have been here a number of times and would have given the place a solid 3-stars, before, but given their adaptation to the current pandemic, I would drop the rating to 2-stars. First I want to state that the employees are all wonderful. Every time I have been they are kind, hard working and remember my name. The food is very expensive is a little bit hit and miss. Generally things are decent. I like the Reuben, which comes with a generous amount of meat. They have gluten-free options, which are always a plus. The frittata is decent but needs salt and is generally a little underwhelming. Would have been nice with feta or something to add a little tang and dimension. The quiche is absolutely not for me.... I've had it twice to make sure it wasn't a fluke (and also because of limited options). Both times there were a few bites of ham toward the bottom crust, but overall it was essentially just a heavy cream egg custard pie- almost inedible. I like rich foods but there needs to be some complexity or balance to something so heavy, and this had none. I would say it was the worst quiche I have ever had, which is a shame at their price point. And that brings me to the next subject- the cost. MK is located in an area where their clientele is predominately wealthy folks who don't worry about their checkbooks but it is almost blisteringly expensive for my tastes: a quiche, frittata and small salad was 35 bucks with tip. The salad was ok, impressively MK has managed to keep their bacon crispy even in a wet salad, although the salad itself was extremely sweet. The reason for two stars is due to a lack of ability to manage during the pandemic. We waited outside. Everyone was confused about what to do. Once we were able to go in and order we wound up waiting 30 minutes to get an extremely burned americano. The espresso is usually delicious here, so it was a great disappointment. I wound up throwing it out because I didn't have time to wait for another one. I'm glad they seem to be doing well, during these difficult times, but sadly I don't think I'll be back. read more

Ambiance: Simple and sweet, the awning in front covering the minimalist patio space under the trees lining the sidewalk, nearly masking the floor-to-ceiling street-facing windows. Indoors, a cozy charm surrounds with the wooden accents and glass drop lighting. Limited seating is found throughout, along the right wall and at the entryway to allow space for those placing orders at the walk-up counter, alongside displays of salads, pastries and the coffee bar. What I ordered: Ready for a sweet treat on this dreary day, I couldn't pass up the bars they are known for, but had to sample more! I started with a chocolate chip cookie ($2) to eat at the establishment, while my friend and dining companion had a Salad Trio for lunch: including the roasted beets, faro salad, and broccoli slaw. To take away, I selected the S'mores bar ($3.25), and the Gluten-Free Chocolate Pecan Cookie ($3.25). Just before we left, my friend picked up an Oatmeal Raisin Cookie for her beau, and the Tahini-Pistachio Shortbread for us to nibble on as we ended our conversation and made our way out. What I loved: The abundance of chocolate chips in the cookie! The beauty of the large bars, and the creativity of the Tahini-Pistachio bar: the texture and flavor of halva, and flaky goodness of shortbread paired perfectly with soft dark chocolate and the crunch of pistachios. But my stand-out favorite was the Gluten Free Chocolate Pecan Cookie. Why I loved it: Simple elegance, a diverse crowd of neighbors, colleagues and people of all ages.
