My next statement may seem grandiose, but I stand firmly when I make the following claim: Madcap makes best coffee in the world. Seriously. If you claim to be a coffee fanatic and haven't been to one of their espresso tastings, you are seriously missing out. Their commitment to perfection is apparent in all they do. When craving something sweet, the cafe miel is the best choice, a smooth mixture of the their espresso, honey, and sugar and spices. The ambience is modern and classy, a prominent fixture situated firmly within the downtown culture of Grand Rapids. read more

Overview: definitely give it a try! Especially if you are inclined to study in a coffee shop. Typically in my reviews, I give a star for each of these categories (Service, Food, Drink, Ambiance, Parking) and then add up to rate my experience at a particular business. Service - really nice baristas. Very helpful in giving info about local restaurants around downtown Food - didn't order any food but the coffee was good! I think they used 2% milk because my latte didn't have the creaminess of other coffee places in the area Drink selection - for artisan coffee shops, less is more! Just enough selection without all the frilly drinks. Ambiance/Cleanliness - the best studying atmosphere out of all the coffee shops in GR. wide open space and tables are new, clean and enough space between tables. Parking - sucks!!!!! Everywhere in downtown GR, parking sucks so I won't hold it against them but it is a pain to find parking if you are just stopping here for coffee read more

We were strolling the downtown and wanted a cup of java and found this gem. A definite place to go to try a flight of coffee with some sweets of course. Coffee brewed per order and one can really taste all the flavors described. I wish there was a spot like this were I live. read more

Wonderful flavors, friendly staff, inviting atmosphere. You can't find better coffee in GR, in my opinion :) There is always something interesting to try, or if you're looking for old favorites, they'll be flawless. Not a lot of sweet 'do-you-want-any-coffee-in-that-syrup?' drinks here. read more

This review is more for Madcap coffee than this specific location. I order coffee through their site or buy it in New Buffalo, Michigan. I live in Chicago. There are many purveyors of excellent coffee near me but few hold a candle to the quality of the beans I get from Madcap. I think my endorphin levels shoot up with that first sip. So many complex notes. Many bright, vibrant and fruity. If you value a quality cup of coffee and enjoy brewing at home, I highly recommend! read more

In my travels, I visit a LOT of coffee joints for business meetings or in between. Madcap Coffee is definitely in my Top 5 list. It's hip without being pretentious, has ample seating without being packed, and the staff and coffee drinks are top notch! You HAVE to try the Cafe Miel. I'm usually a dirty chai drinker but really enjoyed this non-chai coffee drink...along with an espresso sea salt shortbread cookie. The vibe is laid back so if you're looking for a see and be seen kinda place, keep walking. But if you want excellent coffee drinks served by an engaging staff with the chops to produce memorable coffee in a chill vibe, stop in and enjoy. read more

Words cannot express my love for Madcap - hands down the best roaster in the state, and one of the best in the country (up there with Stumptown, Counter Culture, and the likes). Their baristas always do well in national competitions (the latte art is on point, if you're into that). The coffee is consistent and high quality. The pour overs are full bodied and unique. The prices are high, but they take great care in their roasts and drinks so all is forgiven. The ambience is hip but not uninviting. The seating area and hours have improved since their debut, but it's still not really a good place to do work. It's an excellent place to chat with friends, soak in some sunlight from the big windows, and take a breather from the city. The location is in a really cute part of the Grand Rapids downtown area. I love their beans and use them for pour overs at home. The beans make excellent gifts, btw! Very mod presentation. When I moved to Boston, I ordered a shipment from the roaster. The care and quality with the delivery was top notch. I feel like they really care about their customers. A real Grand Rapids gem! read more

I agree with Hassan S for same reasons. Slow and expensive- but people hanging out (mostly on laptops with only a few socializing) seemed to be enjoying. Wouldn't rule out going again but would find something else to try. read more

Some unique teas (yessss) and the standard coffee options for decent prices. Coconut milk option. Comfortable chill out and working spaces with some wall plugs. There's ample lamp lighting, big windows, and a high ceiling. I'm liking it! read more

This coffee joint is pretty popular in my opinion in terms of their recognition in town. To me, it's just another coffee shop in town. I've been to the Downtown Market location and the Monroe Center several times with various friends, and it's nothing special. In a way it's comparable to Starbucks... Every time I went, the baristas really wouldn't care about the customers or have enthusiasm in their service/work. They just make the coffee and just give it to you kind of thing. This is quite honestly my most favored coffee shop in the heart of Downtown Grand Rapids. Upon walking in you see all the types of coffee they are selling on display on the front counter. They have regular milk, almond, and coconut milk that goes well with any latte off the menu. the aesthetic of the location is gorgeous and very modern, clean, and well lit. Upsides - They have a vegan cookie with raspberry filling that is to DIE for! It is amazing and so tasty and I have tried to make it myself but it comes nowhere near what they are able to create! The drinks come out quick and taste delicious and being a Chemist and Chemical Engineer, I love their use of flasks, beakers, and separators on display. Downsides - Music is insanely loud...when I say insanely loud I mean it. It is almost impossible sometimes to focus on what you are doing when listening to a blaring sound of House Music while also trying to study the reactor design of Aspen Hysis. Overall, I am giving this location a 4/5 because it is definitely something worthwhile to taste and enjoy but the sound is insane. I would recommend this facility for a meet up/quick work but not for something relating to schoolwork. read more

I think Madcap is great as a company. I just don't frequent this location enough because I don't work downtown or find myself downtown too often during the daytime. Working from home and I am hankering for a coffee shop to work at, I don't pick this place because parking isn't easy. Sorry, but it is the truth. If parking were better, I would come WAY more often. Glad they have the Fulton Street location now because I find myself there a lot more now! Every time I do come in here though I always appreciate the knowledge and friendliness of the baristas. They always know the answers to my questions and provide very knowledgeable answers at that. I always see people working in here and I can definitely see why. I would definitely walk here and work while staring out the window as people walk by. They have great windows for that! Their coffee selection is always outstanding. Many options to choose from and many delicious options to choose at that! read more

I'm a huge fan of Madcap Coffee. Their dedication to the space and transparency about the product is so enjoyable. The coffee is expensive, but you'll always know where it came from and when it was roasted. I typically brew using a French press and can definitely see, smell, and taste a difference based on how recently the coffee was roasted. I also appreciate that Madcap serves a proper macchiato (even if it is unfortunate that certain chain coffee shops have distorted this to the point that Madcap baristas need to ask about it). The tea is also excellent. In short, Madcap is one of my favorite places in town to hang out, have a meeting, or enjoy a luxurious brew. read more

This is one of the best coffee shops I have been to in Grand Rapids. I felt very welcome and the atmosphere was great. The construction that is happening on the outside didn't allow me to check out the full view of the place but the inside was marvelous. The staff was really helpful in helping me pick my coffee. It was my first time and I asked them to help me with a flavor choice. I asked for something sweet since that is my type of choice when it comes to coffee. They served me a honey-cinnamon latte and it was great. I enjoyed the taste and the design on it was a nice touch. I will for sure be back to this place in the future. read more

These guys make a decent nitro cold brew. It's full of flavor and packs a punch! Maybe a bit much for my taste, but the presentation is beautiful. The shop is great! The area is filled with nice tables, bars and couches to sit on. They offer you awesome cups to drink from and real silverware for your mini barista bar. If your in the area and want a good coffee and a great place to sit, give this place a chance! read more

Bright, open, corner location with a cool view of some of the city. My coffee, an iced Cafe Miel, was really good and pretty strong. The baristas really seem to know what they are doing and they are friendly enough to help decide what you want if you don't know. Madcap offers a nice selection of coffee drinks from beans that they roast themselves. The drinks are on the expensive side-- my basic cup of coffee was $3. It was served in a glass pyrex Erlenmeyer flask that was wrapped in a sleeve with a zipper to keep it warm....kinda neat, but a bit unnecessary. I asked what they had as a dark roast, and the barista told me that they do not usually serve dark roasts. A bit disappointed, I ordered the kanzu (medium) roast which was clean and simple. The atmosphere is industrial with the high, exposed ceilings, a brick wall, and simple, contemporary furniture. They have 2 tables (4 chairs each), a long table for about 12 people, 4 leather arm chairs, a couch, barstools at the window for about 7 people, and a standing area with 2 rail-like tables. I went on a Friday afternoon, and they were quite busy with an interesting mix of students studying, friends meeting up to chat, and downtown business-hipsters grabbing coffee to go. It was hard for us to find a seat! I'd return to Madcap to meet up with a friend, but wouldn't go there to study--it's too cold and busy. read more

I want to like Madcap but it's unfortunately pretty underwhelming. The shop lacks the charm and efficieny of hipster coffee shops in major urban centers like Chicago or Seattle. That's the vibe they're going for, so I think it's only fair to compare them to a place like Elm Coffee Roasters in Seattle. Very similar aesthetic, but the quality is light-years behind. I'm glad Madcap has been working to elevate the coffee culture in GR for nearly a decade, but I just don't think the quality comes close to matching the hype. read more

The idea of local coffee is nice and the vibe here is chill, however, I personally don't enjoy the taste of their coffees or espresso. I have tried the pour over coffee that was described with words such as "Chocolate, dark berries, and smooth" while the coffee very much is rich in flavor of a nice dark chocolate and black berry essences, I feel the coffee is never smooth. It's very bitter. But that could just be how that method makes drinks taste. I'm just saying, not my cup of coffee :P I tried the espresso on the last visit, I ordered a cappuccino. Price was $3.75. It was adorable. The barista takes the time to make a design with the steamed milk, today it was a heart. The presentation, the work, and the knowledge for coffee, makes the price worth treating yourself. read more

hit it or quit it: quit it. there are far better choices in grand rapids for java. snapshot: a centrally located and incredibly pretentious establishment where the coffee isn't that good. full review: this was the first place i'd been to for coffee in grand rapids when i moved here, i haven't been back after the first few times, and i've been here four years. i feel most of its good reviews come from people jumping on a bandwagon. the location is excellent, the contemporary and minimalist facade is very nice. street parking only but that's okay as we're downtown. however inside the presentation of the place is only nice to look at. i don't like drinking my coffee in an art gallery. the contemporary theme has has been taken too far; it feels sterile and uninviting, not cozy at all. the coffee is overpriced, gimmicky, and the crowd is insufferable. these guys went for form over function and they are doing well, which is a social study in itself. read more

Their decaf coffee tasted like instant coffee; an Instant taste I had to wait five minutes for. The coffee was barely warm after adding creamer. The atmosphere is nice; the process looks inviting, the final out come not worth the monies or your time. I really do not like wasting my money or my time. A better coffee is waiting at Dunkin' Doughnuts or Mac Donald's. Add insult to injury a tip is suggested for you coming to pickup, take it to your table or it take away. read more

Ok.. I'll admit this is a stupid good cup of coffee. I've been here twice and both times got different drinks. Both were outstanding. The quality is really exceptional. It is SOOO overpriced! I think 8oz of cafe meil was about 8 bucks before a tip. That's just dumb. Their largest size is what most places call a small. Has a super trendy hipster vibe to the place. Fine if you want to sit and savor every sip over 2 hours while you read and pretend you don't want to be noticed. Annoying if you just need coffee fast to keep you going through a busy work day. read more

Walked from my hotel to grab a good local cup of coffee. The location of this place is great. Right downtown, easy to get to, and a great view. The two guys working were very polite. I ordered the mocha. It had a great flavor and was smooth. The atmosphere seemed very relaxed and I was bummed I couldn't sit down to enjoy my drink. My only negative would be the price of the drink for the quantity. I would say it was a little on the small side but you're definitely paying for quality. I would recommend checking it out. read more

I live for fun specialty matcha and while they did have one on the menu, the pine flavors weren't appealing to me. Surprisingly, the real star of the show was the bagel. Not the avocado spread that was on it, that just tasted like that overly acidic stuff you get in the little cups, but the bagel itself was amazing. It was chewy but not tough to chew. I loved its soft doughy texture. They also had some vegan treats available that i'd love to try next time. The matcha was good but not my top pick in GR but that bagel would definitely bring me back.
