Great coffee, great service. The staff obviously takes pride in their product and they're very knowledgeable. Bright, clean vibe. This will be a go to next time I'm in Grand Rapids read more

My friend and I stopped here on our way to work and it did not disappoint! It was recommended by a few others before we came into town, and outfitted into this modern space, Madcap doesn't disappoint! It seems like a cool place to meet someone for coffee or sit and do work. We were there around 7:30am and the space was already buzzing with people typing on their laptops or reading books. I was super tempted to try the Orange Delight, an iced coffee with orange juice, orange zest, and orange blossom, but I stuck with my original cold brew order (in this case Nitro Cold Coffee) with oat milk. They have oat milk as one of the complimentary self-serve options, which was nice to hear! My friend ordered a matcha and she commented it was very earthy. We will definitely be back to try other drinks next time we visit! read more

Super yummy. Either need to make it less tasty or a bigger size. I drank it in like 15 seconds. read more

Madcap Coffee - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Grand Rapids, Michigan

Only one size cup, adding extra espresso adds a double shot which is usually great... Unless they only have 10 Oz cups... I went inside to ask for a larger cup and the barista was very rude and condescending, telling me they only have one size cup and that if I add extra espresso then there's obviously less milk. Totally ruined the taste of my latte and I'll never come back. read more

It's the era of craft. Craft cocktails, craft beer, craft Mac n cheese. This, is craft coffee. And it's excellent. If your favorite coffee is Folgers, well... you might not appreciate Madcap and you'll likely think it's overpriced. Or, perhaps this will be an enlightening experience for you. All I'm saying, is that this is a top notch coffee place, and also, tread carefully. It's highly addicting. read more

Just moved to downtown GR. MIXED reviews on this place - aesthetically its really nice, and the coffee tastes good too. HOWEVER, they do not offer sweeteners!! They have like agave and honey, no stevia, Splenda, brown sugar, equal.....why not??? Telling someone which type of sweetener they MUST have in their coffee (for a coffee drinker) is like telling someone which political party they have to vote for. I will be back WHEN you offer sweeteners of MY choice and not yours! read more

Madcap has a few locations, but this is by far my favorite - especially this time of year with all the trees lit up downtown! If you are looking for high quality teas and coffees this is definitely a spot to stop in GR. The baristas here take such care of every ounce of coffee that is made here. Today I enjoyed the Red Yunnan tea and it was so refreshing and light! I loved it. One of the other reasons I love this spot is there is so much natural light all around it is a great place to do work and feel like you aren't cooped up inside. (It is especially dreamy when it is snowing or raining to look out all the big windows!) read more

This is my favorite coffee place period. They have the best cortado. My drink is always good here. They have to train 6 months before being allowed to make coffee, so you can be guaranteed quality. They are also top notch roasters, but a bit pricy for beans compared to other craft roasters around. That being said, you can get good African roasts here, since it's generally hard to guarantee consistency from African beans. Rowsters is probably the best alternative. Ferris is also good at their factory location, but not in their Holland location. read more

If you're in GR, be here! Decaf is on point. Only downside: now that they make their alternative milks (almond for ex.) IN house, I don't enjoy their lattes. The almond or oat milks are too thin (compared to industry-produced oat milk). So, I get pour overs. It ends well. read more

Went here twice while visiting GR for the weekend and just wish I could bring this place home with me to Cleveland! Ordered a Chai Latte which was very reasonably priced and a pastry. I'm truthfully still thinking about that pastry, I can't remember the name of it but it was a savory sweet potato croissanty thing and it was DELICIOUS. The vibe here is very relaxed, clean and inviting. Sit by the window to enjoy a good book and some people watching! read more

My wife and I were in Grand Rapids months ago for a weekend and one of the highlights that stood out from the visit was Madcap Coffee Company. I recall enjoying a calm morning sitting in the window, reading a book, and drinking a fantastic cup of coffee... Now we find ourselves back in the area and made a point of visiting Madcap Coffee again. I really love this place. It definitely has a 'hipster' vibe as many have eluded to, but the overall environment feels unique. It gives you a "big-city" vibe! Coffee is fantastic, making the typical Starbucks seem "pedestrian". Come see for yourself!! read more

Great coffee but slightly overpriced for a town like Grand Rapids. Placed an order this morning for pickup 15 minutes after open and no one was there to prepare the ordered. No way to ask for a refund on the website either. Waited for 20 minutes for someone to show before giving up. Would like a refund or credit for another time. read more

Came here on a Sunday. Was ready for my morning tea, maybe a little pastry. There's a few tables outside if it's a nice day, otherwise lots of seats inside. Unless there's an event, you can probably find a seat. Pros: - Vibe is super cool. Very clean. Polished. Modern. Some people hanging out on laptops, everyone just kind of enjoying their Sunday's. - I got the red tea. Really nice. Some type of black organic Chinese tea. Not too strong. You can get it iced or hot. I tried both, I think I prefer the black. - Pastry selection was solid. Cookies, quiche, etc. - Cashier was knowledgeable and friendly. I do wish they had other types of tea, but I mean it's a coffee shop. I understand. Cons: - Not really a con, but the glass that comes with the tea is kind of small and silly. Let's the tea get cold a little more quickly than I'd like. Parking is street parking. There were spots open all around. I walked there and skipped the issue all together. I will return I enjoyed it! read more

I had read about Madcap in a list of 20 best roasters in the US and they did not disappoint! Amazing lattes and absolutely wonderful drip coffee. Serious coffee. Come here for the coffee. It is well roasted and prepared by people who work here because they are into coffee. This is not a breakfast restaurant, a smoothie place, or donut shop. They offer a variety of bean sources with one pre-brewed and several pour overs made to order plus espresso drinks made with excessive care and love. The space is bright and roomy. No big city cafe on the coast could ever justify this much real estate. read more

Madcap is one of my go-to coffee places in GR. They have a simple menu that is great for coffee lovers. I usually get the chai tea latte, which is one of the best chai tea lattes I've ever had! The vibe in Madcap is cool as well. They have the best music playing and it's loud enough where you can hear it but not way to loud! The employees are always nice and helpful, especially if it's your first time there! It's in the center of downtown, so a perfect location as well! read more

I'm upset. I've been to this joint several times so I decided to see what all the other Yelpers are saying about it. How is this place only 4 stars? What's wrong with you guys writing these 3 star reviews because "the coffee isn't even that good" and "this place isn't very cozy". Give me a break. If you give this place under 5 stars you're probably the owner of a crappy coffee shop across town and you're pissed that MadCap is taking all your business. I keep waiting for them to serve me a bad coffee but it hasn't happened yet, so I guess I'll keep coming back. 5 STARS. read more

The most popular coffee spot downtown. Right dead center, by Rosa Park Circle and the GRAM. This place is great for a quick stop if your downtown ice skating, at the GRAM, photoshoot, or just on a date. The shop looks rustic and awesome for coffee photos and instagram. Gosh, I love Madcap. Even when I have as little as five bucks in my bank account i'll still pop in to get a cup of whatever is roasting. The flavor is always top notch and every cup is made with extreme precision and care. The seasonal menus always please, and the usual flavors always hold true. The bagged coffee is worth every penny. I just finished a bag of Ardi I had for probably 6 months just a week ago and- let me tell you - I savored that thing as if it were made of pure, drinkable gold. The atmosphere is very relaxing and comfortable. During extremely busy times it can feel like a bustling New York Startbucks, yet, with the new standing tables and long banquet table, there's enough room to get out of the bustle. I know quite a few people who turn their noses up to Madcap because it's too "pretentious" and "hipster" for them. I can understand how you could get that vibe after visiting only once or twice. But, honestly, like a hot cup of a coffee, you need to hang around and let things cool down to really get a feel for the real atmosphere here. The staff is actually incredibly accommodating and friendly. After a few visits they remember your name, ask you how you've been, etc. etc. Also, theres only a few people behind that counter slowly brewing the coffee to perfection - you can't expect them to just pull the lever of a carafe and hand it to you in a minute (like it's a diner or something.) They're actually brewing the coffee for you, give it a few minutes, talk to somebody, breathe. It's only "hipster" or "pretentious" if you build it up to be. Step in, greet your barista politely, and be patient. It's quality, not quantity (or speed, if you will.) Enjoy your visit. TL;DR Madcap is perfect and everyone should give it at least a couple tries. Also, if you want bagged coffee, i'd suggest Ardi (it's like crack.) read more

I love the ambiance. I could spend hours here... the smell of coffee is rich and can revive any lost braincell after a crazy weekend. However, the drinks are a bit overpriced and they aren't my favorite. I've tried their slow drip coffee and found it to be incredibly sour. Their chai latte confuses me. It tasted like warm milk with grounded peppercorns as a garnish. I understand you use herbs for a chai... but I really didn't like black pepper on my foam. The peppery taste and spice with a bland drink was unusual and awkward? If I'm in the area again, I'll try their hot chocolate. If they fail me again.. I would give up on a local downtown cafe and visit Biggbys down Monroe Center (down the street) instead. read more

Grand Rapids has grown so hip and cool just within the eight years since I left, it really makes me want to re-consider my decision to leave. And this quality is exhibited in spades in this big city-style coffeehouse, Mad Cap. I feel like I'm in Seattle, NYC or San Francisco, Berlin or London. The exposed brick, the off-white walls, the minimalist natural wood and metal tables, the black semi-knockoff Eames Style DSW molded white plastic dining shell chairs and straight-line black couches, exposed ceiling, simple track lighting. And their coffee is excellent. I love this place. Can't get enough of it. Check it out. You will feel the same way, too. read more

A coffee shop that serves flights!? Yes! PLEASE! The coffee flight was a great way for me to taste a variety of their coffees on my first visit. It has the familiar simple open atmosphere serving their own beans in pour-over brewed coffee. I also ordered a latte for my companion and snuck a taste and it was on par with the best lattes I've had at coffee shops in Chicago, Indianapolis, Portland, Denver, Seattle, DC, NYC, Australia, etc.! To be honest, I had no expectations of coffee in Grand Rapids until I noticed a shop in my home town selling/using their beans! I was very satisfied to find my coffee haven in Grand Rapids! read more

Grand Rapids classic. Madcap truly reformed the coffee experience in Grand Rapids. So if you're visiting GR and are downtown then you should come here. They know how to roast and prepare a good coffee bean. I'd recommend their pour over or just buying a bag of their coffee to take home. They don't really offer many specialty beverages - they stick to the classics, but they do the classics well. Sometimes their coffee can be cold though. read more

The Lake Effect is an excellent blend of several African bean varietals containing: 1/3 Yukro, Ethiopia; 1/3 Borana, Ethiopia, 1/3 Gatomboya, Kenya. Had that in a Gibraltar recently. A must for coffee lovers. Madcap is an oasis for me in an otherwise strange town. Their coffee preparation is the gold standard, at least to me: Sophisticated, elegant, and unpretentious. The prices are higher than Starbucks, but so is the value: If you're looking for a cup of whipped sugar with a little coffee in the bottom, this might not be the café for you. Equally thoughtful is the café's minimal design, which is flooded with natural light and offers ample seating. They added two extra seats and a standing bar 8/12/14. It's a good move, though I miss the polished stone table tops. read more

Went to the Monroe location, the guy that took our order definitely has that arrogant vibe going on. I asked if there were any sugar free syrup options his explanation of making small batch in house was fine, but then to go on about you can just go without was really condescending and when I asked if they even offered a sweetener for those that couldn't have sugar for medical reasons his response was we can't cater to everyone, you can just drink it black. I'm glad you are comfortable excluding a whole community of people. read more

My next statement may seem grandiose, but I stand firmly when I make the following claim: Madcap makes best coffee in the world. Seriously. If you claim to be a coffee fanatic and haven't been to one of their espresso tastings, you are seriously missing out. Their commitment to perfection is apparent in all they do. When craving something sweet, the cafe miel is the best choice, a smooth mixture of the their espresso, honey, and sugar and spices. Overview: definitely give it a try! Especially if you are inclined to study in a coffee shop. Typically in my reviews, I give a star for each of these categories (Service, Food, Drink, Ambiance, Parking) and then add up to rate my experience at a particular business. Service - really nice baristas. Very helpful in giving info about local restaurants around downtown Food - didn't order any food but the coffee was good! I think they used 2% milk because my latte didn't have the creaminess of other coffee places in the area Drink selection - for artisan coffee shops, less is more! Just enough selection without all the frilly drinks. Ambiance/Cleanliness - the best studying atmosphere out of all the coffee shops in GR. wide open space and tables are new, clean and enough space between tables. Parking - sucks!!!!! Everywhere in downtown GR, parking sucks so I won't hold it against them but it is a pain to find parking if you are just stopping here for coffee read more

This place is truly the worlds finest Coffee Shop! The very best espresso I have ever tasted paired with expert Baristas who truly know what they are doing.
