Sometimes you just need a place to escape the hotel room, crack open the laptop, and get some work done. That's exactly what brought me to Midnight Express Cafe in Grand Rapids. Apparently this is a favorite among the local college crowd, and I can see why. The space is big, bright, and inviting. There were groups of friends playing card games, plenty of people working on laptops, and an atmosphere that somehow felt both fun and relaxing. The vibe check? Passed with flying colors. It wasn't perfect, though. If you're planning on working for a few hours, be prepared to hunt for actual working power outlets because they're surprisingly scarce. My chai latte also left a lot to be desired. It wasn't bad, just forgettable. Then came the açaí bowl. Organic açaí blended with blueberries, mango, blue agave, and coconut milk, then topped with granola, coconut flakes, chocolate chips, honey, strawberries, blueberries, and peanut butter. Oh... my... goodness. I was not prepared for what arrived at the table. Every ingredient tasted incredibly fresh. The fruit was vibrant, the granola had amazing texture, and every bite felt like the perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and refreshing. It wasn't just delicious--it was one of those dishes that makes you stop what you're doing because your full attention suddenly belongs to the food. Here's what makes that statement carry some weight: I live in an area of South Florida surrounded by a huge Brazilian community. I have no fewer than six dedicated açaí shops within eight minutes of my house. I've had a lot of açaí bowls over the years. Without question, Midnight Express Cafe serves the best açaí bowl I've ever had. I never expected to find my favorite açaí bowl in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but here we are. A great place to sit and do homework. A lot of coveted seats by windows and outlets so get there at a good time to stake your claim. The coffee is always good and you can customize the heck out of. Theres always a nice playlist going in the background. I have yet to try to food besides the killer chocolate chip cookies they make in house but there's a nice menu of sandwiches, salads, and smoothies. read more

Just tried their Mocha Latte and I thought it was great! This place is definitely a vibe and service is very good. Would recommend.

Overall really like this place and would come back for take out or to sit in and do some work. It's bigger on the inside than expected. I had a brown sugar shaken espresso with oat milk (4.5/5), a chocolate croissant (3/5), and açaí bowl (3/5). My friend got the pink lemonade smoothie (5/5). The croisssnt was nothing special and I personally would have liked a little more chocolate on the inside and a little more "flakiness" to each bite. The açaí bowl was OK; there were chunks of unblended frozen fruit that are too hard to chew, plus I was told they were "out of strawberries" so there was just granola and a little bit of coconut flakes on top. The granola was good, but personally I prefer açaí bowls topped with fruit (berries, banana) and just a little bit of granola. But, next time I definitely want to try a breakfast or lunch sandwich - love that they have pretty much a full food menu rather than just pastries or a super limited food menu like some cafes. I really want to give this place a four or five. Right now, they are struggling with their air-conditioning and it's way too hot inside during these perfectly mild days of spring. Coming in from pleasant weather into a hot as balls coffee shop is not the right first impression. When they open their front and back doors, they get a cross breeze that totally works and they should do that every day for now. Apparently building management is screwing this up, and punishing the tenant and the tenant's customers. I heard the maintenance guy say "the system can't handle the sun." Well, then you should not have built a place with huge windows facing the sun without a bigger system... Otherwise!! - the hours are great because it's an actual coffee shop that's open past midnight. That's a big deal because actual late night shops are all too uncommon in Grand Rapids. Their menu is very good and they do a lot without a lot of space. Their beverages are fantastic and their desserts are super yummy. The staff is friendly, but doesn't seem to understand the predicament they're put in with the overly hot workplace. The furniture is diverse, so you can always find some kind of seating that fits your mood or your group. Also doesn't hurt that it has a vibrant college crowd, so there are people that are constantly active and doing things ,who understand how to use the benefits of a shop like this. The food and latte drinks were very good, but service was quite slow. We were not in a hurry fortunately, and enjoyed the leisurely experience. Most of the clientele seemed to be just hanging out using the Internet connection, and not at all being concerned about taking four place tables for just themselves, despite many empty smaller tables. the best coffee i've had so far. me and my partner have been here quite a few times, and every single time the service is impeccable and the coffee is amazing. they are open late, and are down the street from the college so it does get quite busy; but it's never too busy or loud. we've always been able to find seating and hangout until our order is done. read more

I don't know why this place isn't more talked about, what a hidden gem! I know previous business have tried to open up in this location but they've always fell through. I cannot recommend this cafe enough! their extensive menu including coffee, paninis, bagels, salads, açaí bowls, smoothies, wraps, and other super foods makes it hard not to stay for a few hours while doing homework because it's all so good! I stumbled upon this cafe after trying to get into Bitterend right down the street but they're always packed full, and I can confidently say this is my new favorite cafe in grand rapids :) come give this local business a shot, I promise you won't regret it! 10000/10 read more

Walked by Fulton street one morning and saw this cute cafe and decided to come in for a try. I am so glad I did because it's quickly becoming one of my favorite coffee shop/cafes. The place is very big with lots of seating and tables for different group sizes. The coffee is fresh and strong with lots of expresso options and speciality drinks. The best part is they have a lot of food choices from morning bagels to wraps, paninis, and flat breads. They also have muffins on the display case. read more
