Went there last Friday and ordered a light roast coffee and a scone. $6 out the door, and it was 16oz off coffee! Good prices, for sure. The place was pretty busy. All the coffee is Michigan roasted. I believe the idea is that the you'd come and have coffee in the morning and probably save your beer drinking for afternoon. First time here. Cute place. Food was great! We got the breakfast quesadilla and burrito. Coffee was some of the best I've had. I had the white cloud latte and my husband got just regular coffee with cream. We didn't try their beer but I am sure we will be back. I don't know how we have not been here sooner. Such a great little spot! I went in the middle of the week for lunch and it wasn't overly busy, there was a table available right away. The place was pretty clean but relaxed. I know most people go for the coffee, beer or smoothies, but I only got the focaccia club sandwich. It came with chips and a pickle spear. It was really tasty, especially the bread. It was more food than I was expecting. The staff was friendly and the food came out rather quickly. The breakfast items looked delicious as well. One of my girlfriends, her mom and I were able to get out here over the weekend to take in some artwork that the mom had on display, and it was my first time there! Essential Beans has amazing coffee, which you can find at any local grocery store. It was a real treat coming to the coffee house- I got the Nutty Irishman coffee, which had to have been one of the smoothest pours of coffee I've ever had! I also enjoyed a delicious souffle, which was a bit heavy handed on the black pepper but still completely delicious. The overall ambiance of the place was super cozy and very laid back. I loved the local artwork on display there - it shows the dedication of the coffee shop to support Grand Rapids artists. Came here while visiting family that live in Michigan. (My wife and I live in Colorado), got a flight so I could taste the beers, and I'm not sure what the other people in the comments tasted - but I was pretty happy and surprised by the quality and taste of the beers they make in house. I love beer and I also love the Michigans growing craft beer scene. With so many options to choose from, it's difficult to find something that really stands out and carves it's own niche. Essential Bean has done precisely that. Will you be able to pick up woman, take designer drugs and dance all night here? Absolutely not and that is exactly what they are going for. A very mellow place where you can enjoy a great beer or latte with a friend. And the beer is great! The IPA alone is worth the trip. Really something special. Everything was really good. Service, staff, cleanliness, and the list goes on and on. Even met the owners and they are really nice. Did I mention the beer? Essential Bean is a definite must. Meh explains the service and food here.I do give them credit for trying to diversify and trying. The atmosphere was a little...off? It seems like no one knew what they were doing. They weren't really knowledgeable about their beers (or coffee drinks). I think the employees need more training from answering questions on the products served to offering stellar customer service. They offer sandwiches and some baked goods, which is typical coffee shop food. But I would have liked some pretzels and beer cheese with my beer. OR some other finger/bar food. The beer was ok, nothing that makes me want to go back. I have hopes that they will fine-tune the beer and it will be great some day. Maybe I'm just so used to Founders and other well-known breweries. I went here once, before they served beer--I had a soy latte--which was ok. But I won't drive out-of-my way to go here though. I'm all for supporting local business, but if I'm going to pay $$$ for a mediocre latte, I will be taking my business elsewhere. I feel a little bad, but I have experienced better and think this is an ok establishment considering it is located where it is. The place looks nice, the coffee looks delicious (although I didn't try it) and it was well set up. I came in to check out the beer since I'm really into coffee stouts lately. I purchased "No X in Espresso". It was a huge disappointment and waste of money; the beer tasted awful. The supposed coffee stout was amber in color, had a fruity aftertaste to it, and was just generally bad. I would not recommend coming here for the beer, as they need to work on it.
