We stayed in Grand Rapids for a couple days & this was our go to coffee shop. Such a cute place. The person working there was so amazing! We absolutely loved talking with him. So genuinely nice & engaging. He took orders & prepared drinks. I had a pumpkin spice latte with oat milk. Also an iced latte. Both were delicious. We hung out in the downstairs area. Cute spot. Nice local art on the walls. People were working on laptops & lots of people visiting. Clean bathroom. Cute shirts & merch. Great vibes all around. read more

I wanted to grab a cup of coffee with a coworker and we stumbled upon this adorable little coffee shop! When you first walk in, you might be a little disappointed by the limited bar seating... but then you realize there's a whole other space downstairs! It feels like a coffee speakeasy which is such a cool vibe. the coffee was delicious! I got an almond milk cappuccino, and it tasted amazing. The beautiful design on top was an added bonus and made it almost too pretty to drink. The only thing I would add - once the coffee is ready that they run or down instead of us having to listen for them to should the coffee order. That would be a nice added touch ! can't wait to stop in again the next time I'm in town! read more

Decent coffee shop in the downtown area. Ordered the Carrot Cake Latte, and it was okay; nothing to write home about. The best attribute of this place is the space it has to get work done. The lower-level is darker and cozier so it's great to dial in some work. Staff seemed friendly enough, but nobody went above and beyond by any means. Not the best coffee in downtown IMO, but not horrible either. read more

Lantern is a classic. The perfect coffee spot all year round. But their summer menu? Absolutely insane. Smores latte and pineapple matcha? I literally cant choose one. Great place to hang out and read, or catch up with a friend! read more

Awesome coffee shop!!! Since I've been in town have stopped in twice. Had a great black coffee and a lovely dirty chai latte. Staff was very friendly! They have a very cute downstairs lounge area to chill .. look forward to coming back. Grad yourself a bag of beans as well. Many options to take home. read more

I really liked my experience going! I always pass by this spot going to the Pyramid Scheme and sometimes my run club meets here but I finally got to try them out! There's actually an entire bottom level that you can't see from the outside so if it looks full up front by the register, you still may be able to find a seat downstairs. The vibe is super cute and comfortable. They have a lot of nice spaces to hang out or get work done. The staff was very nice and I like the focus on community. read more

Lantern is a decent spot to get some work done. I don't frequent it often just because of the downtown location, but I was there recently for some coworking. The employees were friendly and helpful as I ordered my latte and a croissant. I was pretty sure I ordered it iced, but it came out hot. (Not a big deal.) The latte was okay, I'm not sure what kind of oat milk they use but I think it wasn't my favorite. The spinach and feta croissant was flaky and tasty but I wish they had a way to warm it up (or maybe they do and I should have asked). The vibe inside for to-go orders is bright and cheery, once you go down to the main seating level it's a bit dark and cozy. The wifi was fast and reliable, and there is a decent amount of seating for the space. Metered street parking is available on the surrounding streets. It's not my go-to spot, but if you're downtown and need a caffeine pick me up, stop in! read more

4 stars mainly because this space is awesome for working. I got so much done! Great amount of tables and seating, plugs, kinda dim and moody to focus. Enough energy around to keep you going but not distract you. I ordered a matcha though and didn't love it, so definitely stick to the coffee. read more

As a new resident to the Grand Rapids I have slowly been working through suggested coffee shops and this one did not disappoint. Upon entry, the initial space is cute and cozy with a fun electric sign. The staff greeted me right away and were ready to take my order. Very friendly and professional! I ordered an iced brown sugar cinnamon cold foam, which I learned the cold foam changes day to day. The coffee was tasty and the drink was made quickly. I also ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese that is outsourced from Terra Bagel. They had their own toasting station which I appreciated! They have additional seating on a lower level that offered a variety of options with ample plugs for electronics. As a first time guest I enjoyed my time here and will be returning! read more

I was visiting from out of town. I was going to work from home my bf's apartment but decided to go to Lantern. Loved the basement area. Had high top tables, regulate table, and lounger area. I chose a high top table near a window, grabbed a honey, cinnamon latte and an everything bagel. The bagel was fresh and fluffy. The latte was great! Before I knew it, five hours passed and I had gotten so much work done. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in town! read more

Great coffee and friendly service. Cozy vibes for sure. Great spot to go before a show at TPS or the next morning too.

Came here on my trip to Grand Rapids. It was located pretty close to my hotel, which was a nice walk. I arrived and was a little worried there wasn't any seating, but rest assured, they have a downstairs, which has a lot of open seating (from tables to comfy armchairs). I ordered an almond milk iced caramel and mocha latte and a plain croissant. I took a seat downstairs and started working until my order was complete. I will say, I thought my iced latte would have been a bit bigger. It was the size of a highball glass. I was hoping for more caffeine. The iced latte tasted smooth and delicious. My croissant was good. It was large and flakey. If I'm in the area again, I will stop by. read more

My friends and I were nearby and needed a pick-me up so we stopped in and I'm glad we did! This is a great coffee shop that has a cozy downstairs seating area. I tried one of their special drinks, the Johnny Palmer, which is an iced coffee with lemonade. I figured it would either be my new favorite drink or the grossest drink I ever had. But it was only $4 so I decided to take the risk and I loved it! It was very refreshing and the contrasting flavors somehow worked well together! The service was good too. If I lived in the area, I would definitely be a regular. read more

It was hard giving them a five star since I specifically came in for foam art and they dumped the cup Into a to go cup ruining the art. But this coffee was SO good, I forgave the barista . And this cute coffee nook will be a destination for us next time we come back. read more

Staff were kind and respectful. I tried both their pour over options and I found them each to be rich in flavor. This is an ideal location for stopping in for a quick order. Otherwise, the ambience is not well suited for hanging out to chat with friends due to limited space, limited parking, and noise volume. read more

Good coffee. Good service. Good ambiance. I have nothing but good things to say about Lantern coffee! Not only is it the coziest place to get coffee in the fall/winter, it has some of the tastiest lattes! Baristas are knowledgeable and friendly too! read more

I have walked by Lantern many times but never really had a reason to stop by until recently. I'm not the biggest coffee drinker but had some time to kill between getting downtown and my dinner reservation, so decided to pop into Lantern for a nice hot chai tea latte and warm up a bit! Walking in, I knew I'd like it - the vibe is very comfortable, spacious and not overly quiet or too loud. I think it is the perfect spot to just read a book or even have a first date. It's a bit unassuming from the outside because you don't realize they have an entire "basement" area for more seating (comfy and tables) than just the few window seats and chairs in the main ordering area. My boyfriend and I both ordered a chai latte with oat milk and of course, that it was an upcharge. While the chai latte was good (and how cute are the cups and saucers? Unique shape that fit perfectly for the vibe of the coffee shop), I was a little disappointed that it wasn't super super hot. It was warm and the perfect initial temperature to drink without burning your tongue, but it lost its warmth pretty quickly. For a $6 latte, I'd just hope that it would hold its heat a bit longer. Maybe it was a barista's choice for temperature but I definitely wanted something a bit warmer on such a chilly winter day! Overall, it doesn't totally deter me from coming back and enjoying another beverage a different day. read more

Got my usual, an americano. Really solid. One of the best I've had. Will remember it when we come back.

I hadn't been to Lantern since I needed a good place to study in undergrad (we won't talk about how long ago that was ). It's been a bit, but their great coffee hasn't changed! I ordered a mocha, and my fiancé got a vanilla latte. We chose to sit in the lower seating area, which is my favorite, because it's so cozy, and as my fiancé said, "I feel like I'm in a basement bar in the prohibition era". It's a great place to work, study, or relax! If you go to Lantern, make sure to check out their merch! They have such cute mugs read more

The girls that work here are SO mean, which sucks. They tried to ignore me at the counter, were very short, and pushed my coffee towards me so hard on the counter the latte art spilled a little. Their pastries are good but they don't have an option to warm them up. The lattes are great on cold days. Free wifi and lots of seating downstairs. An overall decent experience for those who need to get some work done. read more

The service, ambiance and prices are great. That said the vanilla oat latte did not taste good - perhaps they did not add the syrup/something was off. If you're looking for coffee shop that takes themselves very seriously, you've found your place. The coffee is good, not over roasted, they've got a decent selection of flavors and milk options. Their iced tea selection is good too - they have a few with a honey base that a really nice. The draw for me is the downstairs work space. There are lots of individual seats to work at and the wifi is strong. I've spent many afternoons here waiting for friends to be done with work. The staff are kind but not overly friendly - just the way I like my pretentious baristas. If you're looking for a place with better coffee than Starbucks but with the same reliable wifi you're in good hands here. read more

This is such a cool place to visit. The coffee is amazing. Everyone is really friendly and great service.

bad experience for me. Not trying to be negative but just not good. Boo. Not happy with my order and my table was wobbly. Just boo.

h/t to Katy C for the recommendation - she knows what I like, and had the perfect place for a wintry coffee excursion! Thank you! THIS place is so cool!! Here's what I love: * friendly barista, with excellent suggestions. * fun, relaxed atmosphere. * DELICIOUS coffee drinks (I had the smore' tado! omg! SO MUCH FUN!!). * tables with chairs, AND comfy chairs! * even though the place was full, it wasn't too loud. * super cute wifi password (I love clever people). * open later than most coffee shops. Things I didn't love: * the majority of the seating is down a half set of stairs to a lower level. If you are unable to do stairs, and the small amount of seating on the main level is full, you're out of luck (also, there is one step to get inside. A portable ramp would be amazing. See the downtown businesses in Stratford, Ontario, for a guide on how to make old buildings accessible). * parking in Grand Rapids (NOT the fault of Lantern!!). There is metered street parking all around, but it was full and we circled for about 10 minutes. I did not see any handicap parking available within the 2-3 block area of Lantern. Grand Rapids has a lot of coffee shop options. THIS IS MY FAVORITE!!! (Thanks again, Katy!!) read more

I've been coming to Lantern for quiet some time. I like the small opening in the corner of the streets. I think the interior structure also gives a good contrast from what you'd expect from the outside. They have a great selection on coffee, but not so much decaf options. I usually order a latte or a non-caffeinated beverage, but never disappoints! Street parking, but there are lots of homeless people in the street above, so I'd recommend parking perhaps a few streets below, if you can during nighttime. read more

lantern coffee review Our experience at the Lantern Coffee Bar was delightful. We ordered a pour over coffee & a café miel. The pour over was listed along with its tasting notes, country of origin, and the source roaster. It held a steady taste with rich cherry notes and the typical pour over coffee oil reduction making for a pleasant cup of afternoon coffee. Their other brewing methods available included Chemex and batch coffee. The café miel was well balanced with a welcoming blend of spices and flavor. It's velvety but not too thick and it will appease cinnamon lovers. As for the Lantern Bar itself, we found seating right away and later moved to a more comfortable table when it opened up. As of the posting of this review, they still require masks indoors. Our ratings are listed below. We enjoyed our time here and will very likely return soon! The last few times the coffee/ lattes have just not been good but I decided to give lantern 1 more shot out of convenience. The vanilla latte I ordered had no vanilla in it and just a plain latte (which I don't mind) but was awful. I also ordered a dirty chai for a friend who said it tasted burnt and not the best too. I couldn't even finish my coffee. The only reason I feel inclined to leave a review is that the coffee quality sucks and I paid $15 for something we couldn't even get through drinking. Will never cheat on madcap again and unless I get something easy like a hot chocolate or tea, I will not be wasting my money. read more
