A very conveniently placed coffee shop in the Kingma's Market. It's quite small, so I would refrain from coming here to get work done, but overall pretty good coffee. It's more on the pricey side for a latte, but they make their efforts in presentation. They have their own pink mugs, and the coffee art is done well! Sometimes I think coffee shops can make their stores look a little too busy with decoration. I believe that simple is often better. The staff was kind, making sure we were take care of. In the GR coffee scene, it's in the above-average category. read more

Cutest pick me up? Don't mind if I do! I have to admit, I'm totally biased because I live right around the corner... but also, this truly is the cutest coffee shop in the Creston/Riverside neighborhood. It's connected to Kingma's, but also stands on its own. Their baked goods come from Lucy's, which is right down the street. Their coffee is always rich and leaves you wanting more. The prices are on the higher side, but it's our splurge every so often. Perfect place to work if you need a change of pace. A cozy, but trendy spot. And the baristas might be the friendliest in town. read more

This coffee shop has been on my list of places to try and today I made it happen! Upon driving up to the location I noticed cute signage outside as well as a nice little patio with decent seating. Parking is a little difficult at this location- there is only street parking available. Upon entry I was greeted by super friendly staff who were ready to take my order. They had some fun specials listed and a regular menu. The setting inside is quaint, as there are a few tables to sit at and limited counter seating. My order: An Iced Lady Lazarus- espresso, oat milk, honey, and lavender. It was delicious! Full of rich flavor with the perfect balance of all ingredients. I would order this again! Cute little coffee shop! Very very small & limited seating, not ideal for groups at all. Maybe 1-3 people can be seated together. Lots of LGBTQ+ propaganda so not my cup of tea when it comes to supporting businesses. Did see a handful of people there reading their Bibles and/or bible studies with a friend which was refreshing after seeing some of the other agendas in the room. This is such a cute coffee shop, and I didn't know it was there for the longest time!! I've been shopping at Kingma's for years, but I never knew if you venture through the little hall towards the back that it leads into Sparrows Coffee! I only discovered it earlier this year since they are a pickup location for Sunday Bakeday. The times I've been in it hasn't been super busy, but I'm usually there at 10 or 11 am on a Sunday. Their drinks that I've tried have been really tasty, and the wait time isn't super long. I just wish it were a little closer to my house. They have a few more specialty drinks I really want to try. It was a little busy when I got there on a Friday at 10am; the few tables were all taken but we found a 2 person table right inside the market bypass area. Extremely thoughtful interior design. Easy parking both along the street and on the Kingmas entrance using the larger parking lot. Coffee is wonderful and service is kind and personal. This second location of Sparrows Coffee is an interesting spot attached to Kingma's Market on Plainfield. If you don't know it's there, you could easily miss it. You can enter through the back of Kingma's, or directly through their main entrance door which is on the side of the Kingma's building. It's a nicer experience to go through the main door, rather than walking past the bathrooms of Kingma's off to the side. The menu is concise and unique, with all the classics like lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, cortados, and drip coffee. They also have a handful of specialty drinks, which is what Nate and I tried. I ordered the cold foam mocha and he got a Dirtier Harry, which is a coffee/earl grey/oat milk combo. Both were iced, which was nice for a summer morning. The employee at the counter was patient and kind when I asked about every single item on the specialty menu -- there are no descriptions posted nor a printed menu, which is a bit annoying for those who have low vision or need other accommodations. It's not the most accessible, but it's minimalist and modern, which is definitely the vibe here. They don't have any hot food options but they carry pastries from Rise, all of which are gluten free and vegan. We ordered a blueberry yum tart, which is a much more delicious version of a pop tart. The berries were flavorful and sweet, and the pastry was super flaky and delicious -- I definitely couldn't tell it was gluten free AND vegan. The interior is bright and open, and the garage doors create an airy space during the day. There is a small patio that rounds out the shop. The furnishings and decor give this Sparrows a very chic LA feel. Cute addition to the popular Creston neighborhood! read more

In five weeks of working from coffee shops around Grand Rapids, Sparrows Coffee is my favorite. Here's why: 1) Coffee: They roast their own specialty coffee and it's good. A simple menu on the wall directs you to how they brew it. My vanilla latte balanced the cream and slight sugar with the quality of the coffee. It was the best cup I had in Grand Rapids! 2) Space: It's in the back of a neighborhood market called Kingma's Market. Park in the lot and walk behind the market to see a small coffee shop with a large outdoor patio and open walls. It's designed in a very industrial, classy way. It could easily be a coffee shop in Brooklyn of L.A.'s Silver Lake 3) Location: It's north of downtown Grand Rapids along Plainfield Avenue NE. Walk down Plainfield Avenue toward downtown to find mural after mural on historic buildings. They have free, strong wifi and outlets under the bar making it a great place to work. read more

I've been going to Sparrows on Wealthy St for awhile and decided it was time to finally try this location. I ordered the Moira Rose (matcha latte with a hint of rose) without knowing what it was, but it was delicious and is now my go to! The interior is cute and I adore the pink accents. I'd recommend either going early or past 1:00pm on the weekends to avoid the rush and to find parking. I can't wait to come back and try their other drinks! read more

Stumbled upon this place while shopping at Kingma's. Coffee drinks are amazing!! I now stop there at least once a week (why go to Starbucks when you could have better, local coffee?!). I'm a big fan of their signature major major. Good hot or iced with the perfect amount of sweetness. They also have creative seasonal drinks that I've never seen anywhere else. They also have pastries that look tasty, although I have yet to try them. The baristas are friendly and they are always quick to make my drink, even when it's busy. The ambience is very chill. There is seating inside and outside. There's a lot of natural light that comes through the windows and skylight. Lots of people always working at their computers or just hanging. Have been here a couple of times now, I really love how they opened up a location in Plainfield. I love the vibe in here and they also have rise baked goods which are gluten free and vegan (My fav). I tried their evergreen latte (peppermint and green tea) it was good but not as strong flavor as I am used to. Their peppermint mocha was delish though! I am lactose-intolerant. It didn't really hit until age 30, which is stupid if you ask me. But ever since this sweet/cold foam phase has kicked off, I've, for the most part, been left out. That ended with my trip to Sparrows coffee. They have oat milk sweet cold foam! It was a fantastically orally orgasmic concoction that I had that day walking around Kingma's market. The two ladies working laughed at my jokes, too, which is always a plus for me. The place has garage doors that, on a nice day, open up and provide a nice breeze for those sitting and enjoying drinks. Plus, they have Lucy's baked goods! read more

I won't be returning, sorry. I paid $4.50 for an iced mocha coffee with cream and either the mocha syrup tasted awful or the coffee beans tasted awful. I had to throw it away; I couldn't tolerate it (sad face). I also didn't like the cups. I ordered a 12oz coffee and the lids are terrible...probably cheap rather. My beverage kept pouring out the cup because the lid didn't really fit around the cup. Starbucks coffee has better cups and lids for their customers. I also didn't like the menu display. It's a good creative idea! but my eyes couldn't adjust to the display (I have 20/20 vision), my mind was going crazy. I will add though it is a cute place. I love the style and colors selected for the small coffee shop. They had cute white coffee mugs with a pink bird print that I almost bought and some nice black T-shirts with white printing for sale. Employees were nice and had good attitudes. To stay on the safe side, just order plain black coffee and you should be fine. read more
