4.5 stars. I have nothing bad to say about this place. I had a latte the weekend of the Festival of the Arts. It was flavorful. The bathroom was clean. The staff was friendly. Tables were clean. I'm not normally the biggest fan of the super upscale, clean look that some seemingly upscale coffee shops provide. The cost was fine. Mapcap is my favorite overall coffee shop in GR. Coffee is at a high level of quality, and the choices are plenty. My favorite local location is still downtown, but am finding that the Fulton street location is growing on me. Service is top notch, and the coffee shop feel in good. read more

I'm a coffee nut and look for lovely atmosphere, passionate and knowledgeable baristas, and, but of course, delightful bean juice. Madcap delivers on it all. I wanted to really taste their espresso so I got a cortado, and I also needed beans for my espresso machine so bought a bag of their house espresso. Both are *so good*. The physical space is also incredible. It's high ceilings, copious windows, and bright and airy atmosphere make it a desirable spot to drink, work, or meet with friends. I love coffee, I don't pretend to be a coffee connoisseur. I know that I'm an average person when it comes to coffee. I love dark roasts, I love medium roasts. I've even been know to like a light roast. We all agree Folgers sucks, and that there are some truly transcendent coffees out there. But I honestly cannot come to understand why people love Madcap. To each there own, and if you love Madcap then more power to you. But this is my review and I think their coffee is over-rated, and over-priced. I'm not against paying $3-$4 for a cup of coffee. But I need it to be worth it and I just don't taste it in their coffee. I find their blends to be unnecessarily bitter. I have tried various coffees from Madcap and haven't liked any of them. So I will personally not be coming back unless a friend specifically asks to meet me there. I hope that they continue to find success as a business, and I'm happy for anyone who loves their coffee. I always order a cafe miel with coconut milk. (In my opinion, it is much tastier with coconut milk with than regular milk!) I really, really appreciate the consistency of their coffee at Madcap. Seating can be sparse (table sharing is common here) and the noise level is pretty much consistently loud. The bathrooms are cute and there are lots of people in and out of the cafe. Stumbled upon this place when my daughter and I were downtown today. Super cute little corner building with ample seating inside. I have to say I love a simple menu! Just classic coffee menu with all the good ones! Seems like the food rotates. So I don't know if croissants are the norm (I should have asked but it was super busy) but they had a few to choose from. After years and years of hearing about an amazing little coffee shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan from people all over the country, I finally got to visit and give them a try. I liked every bit of my experience, and here's why this roaster and cafe is so great: 1) The pour-over coffee: I got a flight, which included three very generous portions of each of their featured coffees (probably 20-24 oz of coffee in total!). All three were amazing, and I would recommend this option to anyone who visits for the first time (or just wants to drink a lot of coffee!) This came with a flyer that explained all about the farms where the coffee was grown and the farmers that helped grow it...a nice touch. 2) The espresso: I got an americano, and it was one of the best americanos I have ever had. Perfectly portioned espresso to water ratio and a very sweet and chocolaty flavor made it really great. 3) The service: super nice and attentive: they explained all about the coffee and how they were brewing it. Really cool. 4) The space: Lots of different seating options, from counters on the windows and at the coffee bar, to tables, to comfy chairs. Lots of outlets too! To start, I want to say that Madcap whole bean coffee is quite a treat. High quality, well roasted, put it in a french press and you will not be disappointed. Having worked at a coffee shop for a few years in the past, I will admit that I'm a bit of a coffee snob. The coffee shop: truly overhyped. We walked in and picked up on the hipster vibes right away. The place had quite a few people inside, but it really wasn't that busy. Most people were finishing up and soon headed out. We were a larger group (13 people) coming from a wedding, so it may have been overwhelming, but none of the FOH staff greeted us. It was a colder experience walking in... I was hoping for just a drip coffee, having had their coffee at home, I knew a simple cup was all I wanted. When I asked for the drip coffee selection, I was shown a list of a few options priced at $5-7! Which I know I didn't hide my shock well at all. It escaped me before I could even realize it. Not a pour over, not a French press, just a drip coffee...FOR $5+!! What size, you may wonder... a whopping 10 ounces. That's it?! I don't understand! Other menu items seemed to be at better price points. They also needed to dial in the espresso better, as shots were coming out burnt. While waiting for our drinks, we had a very smiley, friendly barista and the bar staff seemed much warmer than the FOH. The drinks were disappointing as they didn't seem to be executed well. Such a fun place to grab a coffee downtown and sit at the window seats and watch the people go by! I always get the cafe miel, which was wonderful and such creamy goodness! Hubs got an espresso and black coffee which he loved! He said it is probably one of the best in the city. We love sitting at the window and watching the hustle and bustle of Grand Rapids. The environment is really cool with high ceilings and great music. In the past I feel the staff has been kind of rude/snooty to you if you ask questions about anything or you just don't look like you belong. However, this last time the staff was very kind and seemed very welcoming! I also love the location they put in Fulton street. Place is really hip and clean. Has an East Coast vibe and the staff is fantastic. Certain Espresso is for dine in only. Pretty busy for a Saturday at 4pm. Not only are the space, equipment they use, and graphic design beautiful (if you're like me and care about those things), but the customer service is friendly and informed. My hot chocolate was SO FREAKING GOOD! I wish it was triple in size. My mom loves her coffee and my dad loves his latte. How do you get the foam so fluffy? Man, Grand Rapids is killin' it in the coffee game! Popped into Madcap quickly during a brief trip out there and I was impressed. Firstly the space is real cool. Clean, modern and comfortable. Tasty looking pastries were wooing me from the counter and a variety of available coffees psyched me up. I ordered an iced Ardi Ethiopian while my fella ordered his hot. While we waited for our orders I ran to the restroom. Damn, it's cool. I know it's weird to talk about a bathroom as being a selling point but their is a really rad mural painted on the wall of the ladies' room. Colorful and cool. I took a picture and posted it on Instagram. That's no weird, right? Okay, kind of? Sorry. I came out and my pour over iced was ready. I'm not a black coffee drinker so I added some cream and sugar. My biggest wish for coffee joints is a liquid sweetener (simple syrup or something) when iced beverages are offered. They did not have this so the raw sugar sat as little granules at the bottom of my cup. Sadness. But the coffee was still quite good without the sweet permeating throughout. I'm not a coffee expert but to my untrained palette it was sweet and smooth without the sugar, even. Didn't interact with the staff much so I can't comment on any pretentiousness or what have you but I've kind of come to expect that from some of these fancy coffee joints so it doesn't phase me. *kanye shrug* read more

Spacious cafe, very hipstery, best iced mocha around! We happened upon Madcap just walking back to our hotel. We had plans for breakfast so just wanted a little something to tide us over. First of all, this cafe is beautiful. I loved it from the outside, cute exterior. It's nice and open on the inside, if a little sterile. I liked how they didn't cram all the seats and tables together. Seems like a cool spot to get some work done. It was a hot day so I ordered an iced mocha and I waited interminably long for it but you know what, I ain't mad. It was sooooo good. The PERFECT iced mocha. I don't know what type of chocolate they used but it was delicious, not syrupy or chalky and it married perfectly with the taste of coffee. Sigh. That iced mocha made me really happy. I ended up ordering an iced mocha again the following day from some other cafe trying to replicate the experience and it sucked. I couldn't drink it lol! Madcap, you've ruined me. The baristas seem to take their jobs very seriously and if they make drinks that good, kudos to them. Thank you for caring about the product you send out. While waiting for my mocha, there was some cool local art for sale that you could check out. Prices were listed and seemed very reasonable in case you're looking for some unique original art. My friend and I stopped here on our way to work and it did not disappoint! It was recommended by a few others before we came into town, and outfitted into this modern space, Madcap doesn't disappoint! It seems like a cool place to meet someone for coffee or sit and do work. We were there around 7:30am and the space was already buzzing with people typing on their laptops or reading books. I was super tempted to try the Orange Delight, an iced coffee with orange juice, orange zest, and orange blossom, but I stuck with my original cold brew order (in this case Nitro Cold Coffee) with oat milk. They have oat milk as one of the complimentary self-serve options, which was nice to hear! My friend ordered a matcha and she commented it was very earthy. We will definitely be back to try other drinks next time we visit! read more
