I don't feel good about what I'm going to write. I raved about the food. The serving sizes were awesome. Had lunch at MacCray's yesterday with my family. We were very disappointed with the serving sizes of fish, lobster. Scollops and sides. Yesterday was the first time I never took a doggy bag home. My cod was half the size of every other meal that I ordered. My husband's baked seafood and my daughter's lobster roll was smaller than usual. We were visiting Connecticut from Ohio and went on an adventure to locate some local fresh lobster. We googled and found this local gem and decided to try it especially since the pictures posted from the restaurant looked good. Well we were EXTREMELY impressed by the service of our waitress and the owner who came by to speak to us. The frozen lemonades ( with alcohol ) were amazing . Macray's is the #1 place you should be heading to when you are craving fresh clam cakes, fried fish, clam strips, etc. my wife and u needed a kid friendly spot to have a bite to eat for lunch and decided on this place since we had not been there in a few years and it was such a great decision! We arrived and were greeted with smiles and sat immediately. It's right off a main road but the atmosphere gives you summer time in Rhode Island with the decor. Tables are surrounded with box car seating so you can see the street. Music is great and summer vibes come through for sure! The there is a huge tv for entertainment as well. Service was quick and our orders were taken as soon as we were ready. There are a variety of drink choices including Rhode Island staple Del's lemonade (you can even order it boozy)I ordered a wachusett blueberry and my wife got a Miami vice. Both refreshing and delicious. For food I got a stuffie and clam cakes. My wife ordered fish nuggets and oil ion rings. When our food arrived at the table, in less than 15 minutes mind you, it was hot, fresh and well presented! The batter on the fish was flakey and not soggy at all! The stuffie was one of the best I've ever had with just the right amount of clams and chouriço! The clam cakes aware the star of the show! They are hands down my favorite in the area. Friday nights during lent call for seafood and we stumbled upon Macray's in Tiverton. Our friends rave about this place and we couldn't agree more! In the winter time there isn't much of an atmosphere- it's a walk up window, and the gal working the window was very pleasant and helpful. We found the little room to the right of the window, which had about 4 tables in it. The room echoes any and all sound so it's hard to hear, especially when the only other occupied table is being loud and extremely inappropriate- can't say I blame Macray's but there's gotta be a way to pad the room so there's less of an echo. We ordered the onion rings and fries to share, and I had the fried shrimp- Holy cannoli it was all SO good. The shrimp wasn't greasy at all, the fries were fresh and the onion rings had a good crunch! My kid loved his burger, my daughter her chicken fingers and my husband the fish and chips! He had the small portion and there was plenty. We will definitely be back- probably in the summer time when we can sit outside! read more

Excellent experience always, from great food, fast and friendly service and good prices. Home made and local from what we understand, and it tastes it. The oil is clean and light, quality control is clearly at the forefront. I love the outdoor tiki hut atmosphere, a beachy relaxing feel even though it's right on a main road with lots of traffic. We are working our way through the menu, nothing has disappointed us yet. So far we've had the chowder and cakes, the stuffed quohogs, the shrimp plate and the fishermans platter. All great. First-timers -- and unfortunately, very disappointed. We ordered takeout and tried the Fish Sandwich and the Baked Scallop entrée. The Fish Sandwich was honestly awful. There was barely any fish -- just a thick layer of batter inside an oversized roll. The single slice of tomato was the unusable end piece, and there was no tartar sauce included. The whole thing was dry, flavorless, and carelessly put together. For a seafood spot, this was a major letdown. The Baked Scallop entrée had some potential. The scallops were fresh and tasty, baked in white wine, breadcrumbs, and a bit too much butter. Unfortunately, the sides -- a russet potato and green beans -- were both overcooked (shriveled) and too greasy. The food was expensive, making the poor quality even more frustrating. They have some of the best seafood around. LouAnn had the clam roll, I had the burger (wasn't in the mood for seafood). The clams were delicious, fresh, sweet, and crispy. They were not greasy at all! The portion was good considering many places have cut back. Considering seafood prices $24.00 seemed reasonable. The burger was one of the best I have had. A juicy burger with American cheese served up on brioche roll with roman lettuce leaf and sliced tomato. It was cooked a perfect medium and required a napkin to hold it because it was so juicy. I have been to places that specialize in burgers and frankly with one exception this one was better and only 12.99. The fries were crisp on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. To wash it down we had a tangerine Dell's with Tito's vodka! Wow! What a tasty and refreshing summer drink! read more

We decided to try Macray's again after a previous bad experience. Very glad that we did! They have an assortment of outdoor tables, igloos, and tiki huts set up for your outdoor dining pleasure. We still grabbed ours to go. We ordered clam cakes and chowder, both were piping hot with a good flavor. The clam cakes had clams as did the chowder. They were both way better than some of the other local clam shacks that I do not enjoy in the slightest. We will certainly have to come back and try out one of their igloos or tiki huts, not to mention something tasty off of their dinner menu! read more

Way better than the 3 1/2 star rating I see currently on Yelp. I had a 4 1/2 star experience, I will go with a 4 here, but it's more of a round down. The staff was super efficient and friendly. It was busy when I was there and they did great. The food was very good for what it was, ... casual seafood that is heavy on frying. I had fried clams and a fish sandwich. The clams exceeded my expectations and the sandwich was exactly what I expected. My daughter had a lobster roll that she loved. We both had a Tito's and Del's cocktail and that was tasty too. The staff is friendly and their food is delicious. Great portion of the fried fish and they actually use real clams and clam juice in their clam cakes! I wish they were the ones down by the water because their food is way better than Evelyn's. Also, there to go containers are perfect because they don't let your fried seafood get soggy on the trip back. Best clam cake we have had and we have tried a lot of clam cakes. We have been meaning to try Macray's for a long time but until today it was always just a little to out of the way. Even my 10 month old son who at a young age has become a stuffie and chowder connoisseur, loved it. He can't talk yet but knows 3 signs .. more, milk and all done. Great meal! We enjoyed a lovely late lunch outdoors in the covered tiki bar table area. Food was excellent and totally reasonable. We had the fish tacos. We tried Macray's based on some good reviews, especially for chowder and clam cakes, and had mixed opinions. The good -- my husband enjoyed his small order of fish and chips and was happy to have that option to try a smaller plate of food for a reasonable price so he could try other items. He's fussy about chowder and was glad that it was white chowder (creamy) and said it was pretty good, although his favorite is from Chad's Chowder House in Somerset, MA, but we continue to try new places. His least favorite is from Eveyln's in Tiverton, RI. The just okay -- the stuffed quahog. It had a good flavor and was a bit spicy, but was soft and mushy and a little sweet and reminded me of Ritz cracker crumb dressing that used to be on every fish dish growing up in the 1970's. It was a big pile on a small (maybe little neck shell?) and wrapped in foil, so that could have made it mushy. (The photo is when almost half of it was eaten, so you do receive a large portion of stuffing than pictured, but you can see how small the shell is compared to the small, plastic fork). My mother always made her own stuffed quahogs that were hard to beat with Portuguese bread, chourico, and fresh, ground quahogs that were crispy on the edges where the filling was pushed out between two large quahog shells after baking in the oven. The not so great -- unfortunately the clam cakes. At first they seemed to have promise and not too bad a flavor, a little doughy and dark (overcooked) on the outside, but the big chunks of what seemed to be Little Necks (photo attached) were just like chewy rubber bands that I kept pulling out of my mouth and throwing away. The ones that weren't big and chewy were small and burnt to the outside edges of the clam cake. My husband didn't even finish one of his -- wasn't a fan. Onion Rings -- I ordered them based on a photo I saw on the menu, which looked like they were handmade and thin with a light crispy batter, but these were not what was pictured. They were possibly the frozen type just fried and had more outer batter than the very thin bit of onion inside. Again, we only tried a couple. We probably would only go back if we were in the mood for some decent fish and chips, but not somewhere we would rush back to again unless we wanted to give some of the other options a try. read more

Last spring, we received a gift certificate for Macray's & today was our first visit. It was rainy & gross outside but we tried out one of the igloos. The owner set us up with a heater & we were the only ones there when the takeout window opened this morning. We tried a little of everything. The New England clam chowdah was outstanding (so good, in fact, that we ordered a second bowl!). The hot butter lobster roll was overflowing with all kinds of chunks of succulent lobster. The clam cakes were perfect for dunking in the chowder (the second bowl because we ate the first one before anything else came to the table!). The sampler platter included the aforementioned clam cakes plus scallops, fish nuggets and whole bellied clams along with french fries, tartar sauce & coleslaw. Soooo much food! Everything was perfectly fried. Our first time trying fried scallops & they were just delicious. Thank you Mike for working extra hard during this crazy COVID-19 time. We celebrated at Macray's when we found out we were expecting a son this fall and several people stopped by to ask about it and shared stories. We've been back numerous times since!
