I have been here before a few years ago. The place was busy and filled with customers eating in and picking up. I chose pick up and ordered 3 fish and chips and the calamari platter. The staff was harried because of the crowd , however not rude at all. I brought my food home and we devoured it. The fish and chips were good, the batter on the fish light and flavorful, the calamari was tender and good, although the drive home with them in the Styrofoam container made the calamari batter soft and wilted. I returned yesterday for another go at it, the time was mid day on a week day so the crowd was much smaller. I wasn't driving far so the food did not get as soggy as the first time. The fish was light and flakey and the fries were standard fair, nothing to get excited about, however passable for most. I got a better look at the inside too, plenty of tables with satisfied looking customers. The staff was pretty much the same as far as enthusiasm, or lack thereof...I would not say they were rude, but they certainly weren't "friendly". Amara's is a small building with a BIG menu filled with absolutely delicious choices. I haven't tried everything but I've tried many dishes and each and everyone is FRESH and flavor-filled. Don't discount its size for taste because you'll be the disappointed one! It's clean and everyone employed there does there job above and beyond. They're organized and efficient. There are a few eat in tables but most often they are filled. If you're visiting the area and you want local fresh fish THIS IS THE PLACE. Try it! You'll go back more than once. Does pair well with the chowder Fish and Chips: Large Order - 3 pieces of fish. Would not recommend. Received the tail ends, flat and extremely tiny pieces. Not worth the money. They were not eaten. I would go back for the chowder for sure. Also tried a quahog, nothing to write home about. Maybe if it wasn't overcooked I would have enjoyed it more. First time going here an the fish and chips was incredible. I saw the sign on the wall that they were voted the best in Rhode Island and that makes perfect sense. The service was great and everyone was very friendly. The place is small and quaint and feels very small town. We will absolutely be returning next Friday for the shrimp this time around! read more

I don't really understand the hype. This was my first time going to Amaral's. I saw a lot of cars on the street but did find a small lot that somehow wasn't full. I walked in and it was super busy. It's really small and you can really feel the smoke in the room. Ordering was easy, even through there was a line at "phone pick up" that people were taking orders at...lol I ordered a Small Fish n Chips and a Clam Cakes and Chowder combo. By the time I walked over to a table, it was ready. I liked the new England chowder, it's your traditional chowder. The clam cakes were okay, not much flavor. The fish n chips were clean but bland. I ate more of the fries than the fish. I wouldn't come back, I'd go anywhere else. read more

Basically a storefront in the midst of a shabby city, but DO NOT pass them by! My first observation, clean. The fry oil does not contaminate the separate dishes with old flavors or product. I am not a huge fan of fried food mainly bc it wreaks of old fry oil. Not up in here! The friendly staff are providing a reasonably priced, above average product. The highlight for me was two fold. The clam cakes are great, everything is served really fast, and the service is friendly, the food just ok.

OK. I hate to be *that* guy but I really didn't get the hype - the food just isn't good. My wife and I went here because we wanted to avoid getting ripped off in Newport. The customer service is by far the High Point. The staff was welcoming and cheery. The service was lightning fast. To be fair to the food, it was clearly very fresh. We tried the clam cakes, the clam chowder, and the fish and chips. The red clam chowder was delicious, the white clam chowder was so so, nothing to write home to grandmother about. The fish was just bland. There's nothing more to say about it. I wish they discovered seasoning or spice. Something, anything to give it flavor. I get that it is fresh, but you have to do more justice to the animal then just dipping it into a basic batter. I'm not sure I'm ever going back, but I'm giving them four stars because they seem like outstanding people and I don't want to mess with their algorithm. read more

This review is not from today but collectively since the mid-80's. Shh! This is Warren's secret, but any day they are open at usual meal time, youll find several people patiently waiting for their great food. Inside seating isn't terribly large but I rarely see people standing up with their food waiting for a place to sit, so I guess it's perfectly adequate for them. If it isn't broken, don't mess with it! And that I believe has been the brother's secret to success. They do a huge take-out business. The brother's opened in the mid 80's as a couple of young hard working men taking a chance like any business does. I think part of their success is that somehow they have managed to keep their prices affordable without cutting the quality or quality of their food. Most places now charge $18 & up for a smaller less tasty fish & chips. I believe their large (3pc) fish & chip with coleslaw is around $13. I'm so old, I think I remember maybe $5.95, but definitely $7.95. Friday's they offer a special dinner, baked fish with potato (maybe veg, not sure). Very yummy. Also offer 3 types of chowder in several sizes for there or to go to serve one or many!! Matter of fact, in 2004, we hired them to cater somerset of the food for our wedding reception! Not sure if they still offer catering for funerals & such. Worth asking about! And vo-vo's (Portuguese grandma) secret recipe sweetbread!! Classic hole in the wall diner that has been there for decades, but yet most people have never heard of or may drive by without even noticing. That is what makes Amaral's special, and almost feels like a secret food spot that only the locals know about, since all the tourists are by the water at a clam shack. Amaral's obviously excels at fish & chips, hence the name, so if you come here it would be a disservice to not try it. Fish and chips does not travel well (speaking from experience, haha) and Amaral's has about 6-8 cozy tables in the small dining area, so grab one if you can. On Fridays, you'll be lucky to spot an open table amidst the sea of people waiting for their pick up orders. Food is cooked to order yet no order ever takes more than 5-10 minutes due to the assembly line nature of the business as well as the fact that their menu is not over complicated. If you put on a phone order, they don't start cooking it until you get there, because who wants fish and chips that has been sitting around? My experience with other food aside from fish and chips has been just alright. It feels like everything is done in the same batter and same oil, so results in similar taste. The sandwiches are surprisingly good! I've only ever tried the blade meat sandwich and the meatball grinder, and although they are nothing that would win any prizes, they're pretty dang good for a reasonable price. The chowder is amazing. I always get clear, and amarals does it right. You can tell this chowder recipe has been around for awhile, and in over 10 years eating at Amaral's I can say this recipe has never changed. Clam cakes are really good, but not the best. They are the best for many miles around though. Every now and then they seem a little on the bland side, or sometimes a little salty, sometimes a little dry, sometimes a little oily. Seems like it depends who is making the batter and then who is frying them up. They're always good though, even if they aren't always perfect. And so cheap compared to elsewhere. But, again, this is sort of the nice thing about a small family run business. It's authentic. Amaral's is the best kept secret in the east bay (and beyond) as far as fish and chips and chowder goes. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The ambiance is typical of a well established take out seafood place with a clean 1940s ambiance. They must be doing things right here because it is always busy. The fish and chips are exactly as you would expect them to be. Crispy outside, tender, juicy and flaky inside. I think it fair to break down the dinners as follows:: the fish was a 4. Good, decent size, nice flavor. The crown jewel of the meal was the New England clam chowder... Outstanding! The fries rate a 3. Nothing special, not awful, a bit greasy... but a typical fry. The coleslaw was served in a very small cup. The flavor was ok, the portion size was very small, rate them a 2.
