My Irish husband and I came to this restaurant through a groupon. It was a chilly night (27 F). It was chilly at our seats. I took my jacket off to eat then put it back on. - The soup du jour (Cream of Broccoli) was nice and hot - delicious. I got the corned beef which was just right. My husband got the shepherd's pie. He said it was ok, but dry. needed more gravy or au jus. Dessert was a chocolate cookie pie (pictured). Served warm - yummy! My hubby got a few Guinness. Went there with a Groupon We had the - Burger - Menu said they are famous for there burger. It was good and had a nice char to it but it was on the dry side. Want a good burger in Ridgewood go the Pancake House down the block. Fish & Chips - The fish was tender but the breading was standard - It seemed that this was a frozen version. It lacked the crispy coating that a good fish and chips should have. A good fish and chips also has hand cut fries not the frozen kind that was served. I've been coming here for years. Great dive bar for the area. I give it two stars because the bartender that I always see is grumpy here. He has a weak excuse for an afro and he's always grumpy. I understand a bar is not the most amusing place to work but today he crossed the line. He overcharged me for shots. I've been coming here for years and unless they changed their policy for one night only depending on us.. I don't believe it. Food is ok. My husband ordered chicken pot pie which looked amazing and he said it tasted great. I thought the burger was the safest route to go and I wasn't a fan. It wasn't seasoned well, over cooked, and my order was messed up. Mistakes happen but I was a little disappointed in my meal. Literally paid $20 for a salad when it was advertised on the menu for $10.95 (+$4 of added chicken). When asked about it and the manager came over, she just said "no" repeatedly without hearing the problem first or asking us what happened. They took $2 off our bill, like that did anything. So be aware that their prices are NOT what they are on the menu (both online and paper copies). Like I feel like it's not that hard to change it. I had the please of stopping into MacMurphy's on my way back into the city, after being introduced to it by some locals who had been talking it up for hours that day. If you take a quick scroll through the reviews, it is clear there are two camps: the people who didn't like it and those who did. The latter speak much truth: its a pub, nothing fancy. You might not get waited on hand and foot. The bathrooms may have a less than spotless charm to them. And you're probably not going to encounter a flock of young co-eds hanging out there most nights of the week. But alas, MacMurphy's has the charm that only an old Irish pub can have. Colorful regulars, an understated sense of respect between patrons, and a working fireplace that I would love to come back and see in the winter months. read more

I really dislike this place and it smells like a sewer. The beers just seem very watery and this place scares me.

I worry about the cleanliness of this place for a few reasons: 1. The water tastes disgusting. I asked for a glass of water with my food and it tasted like dirty taps. 2. The downstairs area, where the bathrooms are, reeks with a pungent odor. The bathroom itself was clean, but the hallway getting there and whatever else is down there, is a stinking mess. Otherwise, it's a divey Irish pub with a bar in a room to the right of the entrance and a restaurant with tables in a room to the left. There is also another room with tables upstairs. It's a dark, wooden, comfy decor. Came here about 9pm on a Friday night. The crowd was older. Seemed to be mostly locals. No seats at the bar so we grabbed a table in the other room. I ordered sweet potato fries which were really greasy and nothing special. The drinks were cheap. On a positive note, the total bill for our table - 4 drinks and fries - was less than $25. read more

Want a casual dive bar in Ridgewood? Well then look no further!! Cute little place that's filled with a few locals during the day and early evening. Nice place to grab a drink with friends after work. The food isn't horrible but I honestly don't remember anything I've ever ordered there so not too memorable. Prices are definitely cheap so if you're looking for a deal in this town, ta da! The only thing that grosses me out is the bathrooms and the whole downstairs area. Rubber bar mats on the floor probably haven't been picked up and mopped under in years....It smells like cat piss and urinals, and they have those reusable towel things in the bathrooms. Meh. My first and last Mac Murphy's experience. The place has a solid Irish restaurant feeling and the ambience is nice. The food was not so great. We ordered nachos - ugh! They were the little round nacho chips covered with cold cheese, freezing cold lettuce and salsa. The sour cream was like a block of cement. Do not get those. We also ordered fish and chips considering it is an Irish pub. The fish was overly fried and over cooked. The fries were hot and well done like we asked. Overall, I will not be returning. She's obviously angry about her job there and it spills over to the way she treats the CUSTOMERS ...It's really disgusting and if you want people to come to your establishment then you need to show her the door. Macs has amazing comfort food and even better service. With locals as your waiters and the Owners always there, the service is always consistent. The crispy chicken sandwich is amazing and I get it dine in or take out, but when i do get the chance to dine in the French onion soup is a must. On Tuesdays they have trivia and they also have $1 beer nights throughout the week as well. Macs is the only bar that has gotten me through Covid. read more

Actually DISGUSTING how my friend and I were treated. We were heading in for a drink and to keep warm while we were waiting for a ride. Absolutely horrible experience. I ordered a typical drink a rum and coke. I wanted to keep it simple since I noticed it was pretty busy and my waiter was backed up. After ordering it took over an hour to get my drink. After asking for my drink several times I got it. Half of the ice was melted, it was weak, and I found a hair in it. After raising that concern to my waiter he said he'd get me a new one. It took over a half an hour to get a new drink and not to mention when I got the check it was not covered on the bill. Besides the 'divey' atmosphere that we love, the bartenders are awesome and the patrons are casual and fun. Growing up in the area, I knew I couldn't expect much when my friends and I decided to spend one night a week at this dive bar in Ridgewood so we could play trivia, but I was horribly disappointed at my experience here. The bar is known for being a local hangout with a mostly older crowd, for having over-priced greasy pub food, and for being less than sanitary. However, what we experienced at the bar was far worse than the very little we expected. The food was greasy and overpriced. They had nothing on the menu for my two vegan friends except a house salad, but they had no olive oil to put on it. When my friend ordered the salad and went to whole foods to grab some vegan chicken to put on top of it, the owner of the bar came over to call us rude and loudly scold us. She made a huge scene in front of the other customers. We tried to explain to her my friend's dietary restrictions and tell her that she bought the salad from them because it was the only thing she could eat. She had no understanding of what a vegan eats and told my friend she should have eaten fish. The host and staff were rude and unaccommodating the entirety of the time we spent at the bar. There were six of us eating dinner and three or four of us ordering drinks but we could only get seats for those of us who were eating. Meanwhile, other tables were sat for drinks and trivia only. When my friend arrived and needed a seat to eat dinner, they refused to give her one even though there were empty tables. Our waitress avoided us for the rest of the night. We waited a long time for drinks (yes, we were still paying and buying things after we were treated horribly) and for food. At the end of it all, we were charged a 20% mandatory gratuity on the total of the check after tax.
