As part of the 2026 Tri-State Stamping Tour with American Legion Post 289 in West Milford, one of our stops was at Mason Jar Family Restaurant and Bar in Mahwah. We stopped in to get our stamping tour booklet stamped, grabbed a cold beer and a couple of sodas, and had a chance to relax for a bit at the bar. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and happy to support everyone participating in the tour. It's always nice to see local businesses getting involved with community events that benefit our veterans. We appreciated the hospitality and enjoyed our visit. First time visiting this local spot and won't be our last! Super friendly and helpful service by Darlene. We went with her recommendation of the platter and it did not disappoint! The plates arrived cleaned and warmed ready to be used. The meats were all juicy and well seasoned as were the sides of vegetables and large baked potato. Crisp PBR to wash it down. The service was good, and most of the food was fine. But the nachos were an absolute epic fail. If you own a bar and grill, you should know the difference between good nachos and bad nachos. There is no way a restaurant serves nachos like these and doesn't know they suck. The cheese looked like plastic goo dumped on top, the beans were buried at the bottom where nobody could even get to them, and most of the chips were soggy. It was a pile of bad decisions. Nachos are Bar & Grill 101. Use real ingredients and know what you're doing. No pub should be putting a plate like that on the table and calling it acceptable. read more

This place was conveniently located across the parking lot from our hotel so it made for an easy decision on where to dine especially since it had decent reviews. The place was hopping a bit after 6pm and appeared to be quite popular with families because there were a lot of them. We were seated in a noisy and dark backroom. Our friendly waiter took our drink and food order. I guess we aren't in the Midwest since a draft beer was $9! I got their grilled cheese with brie and cheddar and very thick cut fries. The sandwich was very good. My wife ordered the Caesar salad with a large piece of salmon. She asked for the salmon medium rare and that is what she got. She enjoyed her meal. Went to the Sunday brunch at Mason Jar with 14 other people. Amazed how not many more people take advantage of such a great brunch at a great price! All types of breakfast food, best hash I ever had, fresh sliced meat , fruits , desserts .. they have it all! And our server was the icing on the cake. She was phenomenal!! Checked out this place today. The chili was good. So were my son's wings. Decor was really nice inside. Only thing it didn't have a welcoming vibe. I can't really explain it. First thing going in the hostess didn't seem happy. No smile or anything. But maybe she was having a bad day or didn't feel good. I know this weather has been making everyone feel depressed. Secondly, the waitress gave us the recommendations and I am glad I tried the chili. But only issue she didn't come by once to see how we liked our food. Only when we were finished. My friends and I used to frequent Mason Jar's Sunday brunch buffet in the pre-Covid days, and we had been big fans. The buffet reopened in 2024, I believe, but we only made it back there recently. While the food was still enjoyable and extremely affordable ($35 for the buffet, 3 optional kitchen items, and 1 brunch cocktail), it was sadly no where near as great as we had remembered. They still had a good deal of hot breakfast and lunch items, like Bacon and Shepherd's Pie, but they no longer had any of the smoked fish they made in-house or the wide breadth of salads. The options were still plentiful for the money, including a pasta & omelet station, charcuterie, and hot dishes, but it was at least half of the selection that they used to have. Though I am not typically a Caesar Salad fan, that was the best thing that I tried on this visit. I was also disappointed in the dessert section, which used to make up the bulk of my buffet indulgences. Where there used to be a massive, long table full of petit fours, cakes, pastries, etc., there were only a few cookies, brownies, and chocolate-covered strawberries. The singular brownie I tried tasted like freezer burn. Thankfully, there was also a fruit salad, so I opted for that as my sweet treat. I will say that the sparkling wine I had instead of a mimosa was actually very good. Overall, we still found the brunch buffet to be worth the price, but we could not stop reminiscing about the gigantic spread of yesteryear. read more

Flavorless and expensive, my family spent $90 on a dry chicken sandwich with nothing on it. My son got an over cooked dry burger with 7 French fries. And my husband's plater was just small and flavorless. This place has really gone down hill. The menu and portions are smaller with more generic offerings and then they jacked up the cost. And by god I found it in my home state, a mere 20 minute drive away. 9YO and I share a love for brisket, so we took a chance and got the sampler with 2 servings of that, one of BBQ pork for dad, and one burnt ends for... well dad, too. All of it was amazing. Oh, the starters were, too. Mozz triangles and that uber pretzel. Generous salad for me, good veggies for the offspring. Everyone really enjoyed their dinners. My 13YO has expensive, carnivorous tastes and got his usual--medium rare strip steak. Wife got the chicken milanese. PROS: This place was amazing and reminded me of Charlie Browns with the stuff on the rustic walls. Staff was nice, food was fresh, and everything was priced well. They had live music, loads of parking, and the place was clean and spacious CONS: The service was really slow as food took forever to come out and the bill took a while to come after asking for it. Sometimes you walk into a local place and expect to hit the bar and maybe get something to eat like a burger. But when we walked into Mason Jar it was more than ewe expected. At first it seemed we had walked into a good Pub we would find over in Europe. A good bar and seats are there for you to sit and grab a beer or two. But a bit further as you get inside there is a place for sitting down and having a dinner. And there is much for you to have when you are there. The menu is long. The help is perfect. They can help answer your questions and make recommendations as you consider what would be ideal. Start with a beverage and it is a good way to consider. For us we saw a few things we don't always see when on the road and traveling. But this time here they were so we decided to get something we have not seen in a long time. For us this was a day of salads. We had a beet salad which was made with real fresh red beets. It also had a mix of tomatoes and even some blue cheese. It was topped with balsamic. We then tried our Cobb Salad which was always a combination of eggs, tomatoes, onions, peppers, lettuce. and more blue cheese. This was topped with grilled chicken and a blue cheese dressing which is very traditional with a Cobb Salad. Both salads were perfect. Good, fresh and a nice portion to have. Ideal after a long day of traveling. Naturally, we had to have a selection of chicken wing which were just made and warm. It came with a variety of dips you could use when waiting one of the wings. But these were so great you did not even need to use them. Because it was cold outside we had a warmed apple cider with cinnamon. Ideal on a cold fall day with even a little snow outside. This was a typical fall drink in a restaurant that offered more than expected. Of course, had to have some dessert. In this they had a special for the season. It was a pumpkin cheese cake in the mason jar. It was slightly warm and very fresh. It have some cookie crumbs on top with a little whipped cream. This was so different and taste that it was very different than what you expected. Even the next day it was better. Overall, Mason Jar was a place we never expected where we were. It is like a good local place that offers more than you expect. You can even get a fresh wood-oven pizza that is made for you. That, and a beer, you cannot go wrong. What I loved most about this place was the vibe that it set out. It was like a pub/bar/steakhouse with very nice decor. The staff was also very attentive. The food: it was all very good! I got a steak dinner. My steak was cooked right, seasoned well and very tasty! The mashed potatoes were phenomenal and the Mac and cheese was also very good. Super creamy. Let's start with the positives. Right off of Route 17 with a big parking lot and ample parking. I came here by myself last week for an early dinner at 5 pm, and there was no wait, and was seated quickly by a nice hostess. I had a friendly waitress who came over to introduce herself and take my drink order. I ordered a draft miller lite and it came quickly with too much head on the pour, easily 3 inches. I asked politely for her to ask the bartender to repour it and it came back with a better pour. She was appologetic and asked if the new one was better, which I said it was. She jokingly responded, sorry I did not know the pour was I am a wine drinker. Decent customer service there but pouring a beer at a place like this should be entry level. I ordered 10 garlic parm wings as my dinner and the wings came out 10 - 12 minutes later and were rubbery and not crispy. I mentioned it to the waitress when she came back around and asked if I wanted another batch more well done, and at this point I politely declined and went on my way. 18 dollars total for the beer and the wings. I did leave a 10 dollar tip for the waitress though, just for her customer service skills and attempt to make things right. read more

Mason jar is always a solid food choice when hungry. They are one of the few spots where the kitchen is open late on weekdays for when you're hungry. Service is always great. From time to time it can take a bit of time to get a table on busier or slow nights. But personally I think the food is always worth the delay. Nachos here are an absolutely must try. Each chip is perfectly covered and layered within the pile. Ordered pulled pork on the nachos this time and it was truly delicious and filling. The Buffalo chicken wrap here is great because it's not breaded but grilled chicken. They use blue cheese and I personally always swap it out for ranch. The short rib was delicious and tender. The inside of the restaurant is definitely outdated but has a very cozy and welcoming vibe to it. read more

This is a nice pub-style restaurant with good ambiance and solid food options. Worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. With a young child, I'm not often looking to dine at any sit down restaurants just due to the time commitment and environment. However, we went during a slower time so it wasn't too much of an issue here. Service is good, server was attentive, food was solid. I had the chicken fried steak, which was spot on. I have visited the Mason Jar a couple of time now and I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. My family enjoys coming over to enjoy their BBQ which is done to perfection. The burnt ends, briskets and ribs are to die for. The mashed potatoes are creamy and buttery and pair very well with the Coleslaw. Service very slow. It was busy so that was understandable. Appetizers came out 20 minutes apart, and the red flags began to go up. Then, 40 minutes after ordering 2 prime ribs, the server comes over, says "out of prime rib," tosses 2 menus on the table, and leaves. How can you run out of a regular menu item? It would be understandable if it was a special, but it was not. Poor management and very poorly handled by the server. By now it was a comedy of errors. When she comes back to take new orders, it turns out she only wrote 1 prime rib down. I had ordered a side of Cole slaw with my prime rib. When I had to reorder the entree, I ordered a dish that came with 2 sides. One of which was Cole slaw. 2 minutes after placing the new entree order, a bowl of Cole slaw shows up. Then when my entree shows up, what's on the plate?? Another Cole slaw. Between being out of a menu item and the laughable events that followed, the night was ruined. Never again. read more

Warning! Don't place a delivery order with this restaurant through their own website. I ordered food through their website and the food never was delivered. I received an update on their website stating my food was delivered but it wasn't delivered to me. I contacted the restaurant and spoke to the hostess only be told that they use Ubereats to deliver their food. You would have to take it up with Ubereats about your delivery and refund. I told the hostess no I didn't order using ubereats; it was placed on your restaurant's website. I shouldn't be going to Ubereats for an issue that wasn't business transaction with them. Obviously, this restaurant owner thinks he can keep a customer's money for food that wasn't delivered. We will see what God has to say about it. read more
