We came back because we loved it so much last time. Again very good with kids. They loved the free mints and gum at the entrance and playing tick tac toe and coloring while waiting. Kids menu was reasonable and grilled cheese was a hit with 2 of them. The other had spaghetti and I thought it was mid (expected at an Irish pub) but he enjoyed. I had the steak sandwich and it was on delicious garlic bread. The fries were also amazing. The kids enjoyed hot chocolate but were disappointed that they got it in a paper cup and didn't have the fresh whipped cream from the last time so have to deduct a star for that. First time there last night, thought I would surprise my wife. I made reservations just in case, the bar was busy, food area wasn't so it was nice and quite. Our waitress Brook was very nice and even the young girl from Tuxedo was helpful with information. Our drinks were perfect, had breaded mushrooms to start, the salad was fresh but our entry was out of this world, BEEF WELLINGTON!!! We haven't had it in years, I had mine with mixed vegetables and mashed potatoes and my wife had the vegetables but with roasted potatoes!!! The Filet Mignon was done to our request and very tasty and tender to say the least. I was amazed how a bar/restaurant could come up with such delicious food. This place is a dump !! The decor is outdated and you are hit with an awful smell when you enter the dining room. The staff looks like they would rather get a root canal than wait on the customers. The food always comes out cold and to boot lacks any taste. You are left to eat with silverware that is dirty because no one cares to check on you . Clearly the management does not care if you get your food is uncooked or overcooked or just plain wrong. Not once was there even an offer to adjust our bill. After a 20-minute wait, the wings hit the table, and let me tell you, they didn't just look good, they looked sexy. I got the sweet chili and hot wings, and from the first bite, I was hooked. Crispy, saucy perfection that somehow stayed crunchy under all that flavor. There's no way these 4 and 5 star reviews are real. My wife and I have been here more than a dozen times .. it's not possible we've had such vastly different experiences. We've gone during the week, early and late and on weekends. The service has NEVER been good. Hapless servers that disappear .. inconsistent food taste, no one EVER comes back to ask if you would like a refill . Whether it's beer or iced tea or even water! So my husband and I really have tried to give this place a shot...horrible service. From the moment you walk in no hostess around.. to the server coming over and never coming back to your table. No one refills water or even asks. Every time we order mussels we ask for bread..they don't bring it.. you have to go find someone to get your check. Stopped here after a grueling hike at Harriman State Park. Staff was so nice and accommodating, sat us outside with our dog and brought her fresh water. Service was great, orders taken quickly and drinks/food came out quickly as well! We were the only ones sitting outside (because it was hot AF and because of the dog) but never felt forgotten. Food was fantastic - wings were super crispy and definitely double fried, which don't often see these days. Shrimp tacos, calamari, salad all great. Beer was cold. Great prices and portions. I debated between 2 and 3 stars for this place and only gave it 3 stars because of the service. Some friends and I were camping in nearby Harriman State Park and came here to watch the Penn State game on a Saturday night. We found a seat on the bar side and a woman server came and took our order for a pitcher of beer and to change the channel of the TV above our table. She disappeared and never came back. About 10 minutes later, once of the bartenders (wish I could remember his name) came over to see if we were helped and apologized profusely we hadn't gotten our beer yet. He quickly came back with our pitchers and the remote. 3 of the 4 people in our party ordered boneless wings that were on special that night. We waited the better part of an hour for our food. Our wings were burnt to a crisp and drowned in sauce to cover that. Sauces were decent. I sent my order back and they were taken off the bill without me asking. We didn't mind waiting so long for food as we were there to watch the game anyway and the beer pitchers kept coming. It's disappointing that the cook saw they were burnt and didn't care enough to throw another order of the frozen nuggets in the fryer for 5 minutes, but apparently that's the quality of the food with which the owners are happy. They need to focus the menu. There was sports bar food, pizza, and Irish pub fare. Pick one and do it well. Overall, the place is filled with townies on a Saturday night. There were a lot of loud, drunk, 20 something good ole' boys with a woman or 2 scattered in, that were here, there, and everywhere, inside and outside the restaurant and bar area. I am from out of town, just passing through with family. Why 1 star you ask... cause the place earned it, plain and simple. 1. The food. The only fresh ingredient was the lemon garnish. - I got the chips and "fresh made salsa". I got the bottom of the bag of Tostitos rounds, and medium Tostitos salsa. Definitely not fresh, definitely paid $5 for some Tostitos. - The French onion soup was very watery, not very flavorful - the fried ravioli were pre-frozen and more of a mozzarella stick than a ravioli, marinara side watery and chunky at the same time. - the pretzel bites also frozen, the cheese sauce was velveta. - the calamari was without taste mostly, the marinara also watery. 2. The service. - look I worked in food service... I know it may have been busy... I also know that it's not the customers problem. Executing on the basics consistently is part of peak time at restaurants. Took 10 minutes for my family to be seated, there was no one waiting... just no one came to seat us. Had to ask for water 3 times, no drink refills the entire time. Took 10 more minutes just to get the drinks after ordering them. My mothers food just plain old didn't show up and we had to ask someone to make it. Would not recommend... even if the service was a 10/10, which it wasn't. read more

They specialize in American style cuisine so we kept it basic around the table. Wraps and sandwiches for the adults. Finger foods for the kids. I had a very yummy Caprese Wrap (roasted red peppers, fresh moz, grilled chicken and light balsamic vinaigrette dressing on a toasted Spinach Wrap) with fries. The kids split a few orders of buffalo wings, coconut shrimp and fries which they loved. The coconut shrimp were delicious I highly recommend them. The highlight of our visit was the friendly staff from the hostess at the front to our awesome waitress Veronica. They were all very accommodating to our large party and made us feel right home. Overall *** It can't be all that easy being a few doors down from the wildly popular Rhodes Tavern and I would consider Character's a sort of Rhodes "Lite". They may benefit from some of the Rhodes overflow but Characters could struggle to stand on its own unless they can step up their game a bit. Setting *** The outside looks like a classic colonial large home with a wrap around porch. The porch is rather narrow so it can only truly accommodate mostly 2 tops although they have stuffed a few larger tables in the corners. The inside bar is L shaped with a few pub height tables, the inside dining room seemed fine and had a view of the pizza station. The bathrooms are single use but looked recently remodeled and the parking lot looks like it could be difficult on busier nights. Service *** We arrived at about 1:00pm on a beautiful Sunday straight from hiking at Harriman and since they allow dogs outside (a leg up on Rhodes) we decided to come here instead. We were the only table outside and they may have just gotten a rush as we initially sat unattended for 10 minutes. We were all very tired and thirsty so, me being impatient, I went inside to the bar to grab drinks. My frustration melted away with a super friendly bartender who realized what I was doing and instead of having an attitude was fast and apologetic. A few minutes after I arrived back at our table with the drinks our very friendly server, Kayla, appeared and again apologized for the delay and quickly took care of us. I wanted to go Four Stars here but there were a few things that I felt were missed. My wife's salad arrived without the ordered Grilled Chicken (we didn't bother anyone because we figured it would arrive after we ate). No salt and pepper on the table and at the risk of being overly picky, not having HP Sauce for my Bangers & Mashed. Food *** Overall we agreed the food was decent but probably not something that we would rush back for. My Bangers & Mashed was ok but the mashed had a strange gravy and the adjoining baked beans were watery and tasteless. As I mentioned I really missed my HP as they only had some poor substitute, I really should have checked before ordering. The kids all had burgers with varying degree of success with temperatures but the consensus was that they were unseasoned and tasted like they came off a dirty grill as they said they tasted burnt. I couldn't help notice that on my wife's Avocado Salad the Avocado was a tad brown and again was missing the Grilled Chicken. The dressing that she ordered on the side looked overly thick and she only touched it twice but did finish the salad itself. Value **** The Burgers were ridiculously affordable at $9 as was a pint of Defiant at $5. The salad at $13.25 not so much and I'll never understand why everyone charges so much for Bangers and Mashed ($16) maybe it's just a scarcity issue. read more
