I've been here a few times lately for live music. I've seen Tammy & the Others a few times and Phoenix. They both kicked ass but I may be impartial since I know people in the bands so this review is for Shortways. I can't say much about the food. I struggle being completely vegan and will eat vegetarian when I'm with other people to be social able. The margarita pizza was phenomenal! The have a great selection of bar pies, I don't think you'll be disappointed. They have a good selection of beer on draft. It could be a little bit colder but it hits the spot nicely. The bartenders & servers are all friendly. Some times I have a hard time getting their attention but maybe I should be more assertive? Anyway I recommend checking them out for some live music, pizza and beer. read more

Shortway's is exactly what you'd come to expect from a local American bar -- it's the kind of place with regulars that visit multiple times a week. There's lots of seating, both indoor and out, and plenty of standard bar offerings. Boyfriend and I both got burgers, and both were overcooked but still good and juicy. I've been a Hawthorne resident most of my life and this was my first time eating here a few weeks ago. Ambiance: A typical American style bar/restaurant. I went on a rainy Thursday night and the place was fairly quiet. Casual attire and parking lot was right on the property so I didn't get too fussed about walking in the rain. Price Point: In line with what is around for this style/quality/quantity of food and drink. Maybe a little pricier than what I expected, being that the comparable places I'm thinking of are the newer spots in and around town where I expect to pay the premium. Pros: The food was good, and the salad was presented well. I got the Bourbon Chicken Wings and Grilled Chicken Cobb Salad. The chicken (wings and grilled) was hot and the salad was cold, tasted fresh, and enjoyable all around. The food came out in a timely manner and service was good. Cons: As you can see in the picture, the wings had very few vegetables. I see this at most places I go so it's not just here, but I just don't understand why places won't serve at least one vegetable for each wing. It just makes the dish look cheap to me. Also, my guest and I both ordered a Blue Moon beer and we typically drink blue moon whenever we go out. What they served us tasted like a knock off lager. Not bad, but something tasted off. We ordered it again thinking they served a different beer the first time, but it still tasted the same. Overall: I certainly would come back here, and I think it's a great Hawthorne staple! It's been here for so long I almost feel bad for not visiting sooner. I'm hoping they are more lively at other times during the week, otherwise they may struggle to be competitive with the newer spots opening up. I could see this being a 5 star rating, but due to the beer mishap, overall quiet ambiance, and nothing really exciting me about being here, it's a solid 4 for me. read more

I want to give a 3-1/2 star review, but since that's not possible, it has to be 3. This is my review after 3 visits. Shortway's is a great place to go if you're an established regular and I honestly don't think it's worth the time and effort to become one. The food is okay. There's a large selection from pizza, quesadillas, pasta dishes to full on pork chop entrees. Today my husband and I both got burgers. They were slightly over cooked for what we asked for and very greasy. The sweet potato fries were crispy, but unseasoned. My husbands onion rings were decent. The beer is cold and they have a pretty decent selection, but good luck getting a second drink. The staff is friendly enough, but if there's a bunch of regulars in attendance, you'll be playing second fiddle to most of the people at the bar. We also had no idea they had live music. It was extremely loud for the space and amount of people at the bar. Personally not something I'm into when I'm just trying to eat an early dinner on Sunday evening. Shortway's is a clean place for a cold beer and alright bar food. You probably can't go wrong catching a game here, just know you'll probably have to work a little bit to get served if there's regulars around. read more

Nice old school tavern, great ambiance. We had the house made roast beef sandwiches and aus jus which were delicious but a bit pricey. Meatloaf with mash and veg was priced much better. Service was on point and a great Guinness pour. We will return for another go. read more

I cannot believe I didn't come here sooner. I live right up the street and have spent years not going there! The service was incredible. They made us feel like old friends and went out of their way to offer us vegetarian options that weren't on the menu which most places never do. My husband and I have been passing this restaurant for years and finally decided to stop in for dinner. We were both pretty hungry, so we started with a large nachos as an appetizer, nachos that we've ever had! They layered the cheese and meat perfectly! Stopped in to celebrate some business achievements in our household. Waited 10 minutes to be seated. Gnats all around us, had to ask to move tables. Might have been the worst service ive had at a restaurant in a while. My father goes here for beers sometimes with friends so he was excited to take me for dinner there. Food was average at best, beer taste watered down and not cold, our original waitress vanished and was nowhere to be found after we asked for beers and ketchup. Then "forgot" the beers and ketchup when she showed back up 30 mins later and we asked again. Mind you she walked by us 5 times when she reappeared and ignored us all 5 times she walked by trying to get her attention before she finally acknowledged us. Glad we got our second beers and ketchup with our last bites of food. Never again. In my fathers words "That was easily the worst time ive ever had here". My childhood friends, Ben and David, and I were looking for a quick beer and bite while catching up on Thanksgiving weekend. I consulted my Yelp encyclopedia, and we landed at Shortway's Barn. Upon walking in, we weren't directed to seating, so we grabbed a seat at a table in the bar area. As we chatted, we took in the a decor, thinking, "Wow this was probably really a barn. Neat." Country music played and locals laughed with drinks in hand. It wasn't crowded at all, but we sat with no menus quite a while, wondering if someone would wait on us. A little later, we decided we'd move to the bar itself people. We couldn't manage to get any help without waving at one of the bartenders. It was uncomfortable to wave like that, but we had to get their attention somehow, right? Eventually, we got our beers, and we got our food. I ordered a pizza with veggies, which confused the bartender. I guess it's not everyday people ask for "vegetables" in a place like that. Despite their surprise they were very nice, and the pizza was good, though it came about ten minutes after my friends' food. The place is authentic looking, the food is solid, and people are nice, but the service is inattentive and slow. Absolutely disgusting. We ordered a pastrami Reuben and a pretzel. The pretzel was hard, flavorless, and looked burned. The pastrami was like boiled hot dog. I don't understand how they have a 4.2 rating. I guess people from Jersey have never had decent food so they have nothing to compare it to. I would have returned the food and demanded a refund but we're from NY and didn't taste the food until we got back to the hotel 30 minutes away. The food went unfinished and we went to Wawa for subs. Liked the music and atmosphere. Hated the booze. The atmosphere is welcoming, with no specific age range. You'll find 20 year olds and 70 year olds. Their Guinness is watered down and tastes horrible. The bartenders don't even know the proper way to pour a pint. Their mixed drinks have a ton of soda and barely any alcohol. The drink prices are decent but I'd rather pay a buck more for better quality. The band Shattered Limbs was playing the nite I went to Shortways. Despite their name, they're actually a lively lil group, playing everything from Jimmy Eat World to AC/DC. Everyone seemed to enjoy them, as they were the only positive point of the evening. read more

This was my third time at this establishment.The other two times I was there with someone who'd been going for years and was known by the staff.Great experiences both times. This time,much different.I wanted to introduce a friend to the establishment.As I write this,I'm a bit embarrassed that I talked the place up to him...We got there around 4:30 pm.There was only one other table occupied.The waitress seemed a bit off,like maybe she was rushed.We place our orders and that was it.At this point most of the tables are occupied,I watched as she seemed to know people at the other tables and seemed a bit more animated and happy.Other staffers working also seemed to know most of the patrons.Meanwhile,we waited.And Waited.And waited.I noticed most of the other tables had their food.... Our waitress now happily chatting with regulars at other tables not coming anywhere near us. We contemplated leaving to go get food because it was well over 40 minutes since we ordered. 40 plus minutes for a salad and chicken sandwich? This was my first visit to Shortway's Barn although it's been around and within walking distance for forever. It was a Tuesday which was Christmas Eve at 12:30pm. What to my wondering eyes should appear but a full bar with beer. I guess the holidays bring out the morning drinkers. I had to sit down without that buffer seat between bar patrons and it's a fairly large rectangular setup. This was your classic tv bar scenario with a sassy bartender and unruly but harmless patrons. I think the menu has been improved during modern times so I was pleased with all my choices. I enjoyed my roast beef club sandwich and fries while watching sports, daytime tv shows and news on the televisions and listening to Christmas songs of course. read more

This is a great bar. Great atmosphere, live music, and on point bartenders. The place was crazy packed. After 9pm, at least last night, it was $5 to get in. Awesome dive bar! I'm a young guy and I enjoy going to Hoboken and morristown for the young crowd, but at the end of the day, all I want is to go to Shortways for a beer with some nice people. You wouldn't expect most dive bars to have good food, but their wings and burgers here are VERY good. Highly recommended. Their beers are cheap and their bartenders are so nice. Enjoy this place! It's rare to find a bar that has that nice small town feel in New Jersey; this is the only place that has that feeling! read more
